Let their workers cut in front of you in line. Was about to be rung up. Another worker saw a two foot space between me and the other person being rung up. They walked right up inserted themselves in the line and the person working the register said nothing when I did bring it up all she said was I know I don't know why she did that... yes but also why did you allow it. Wow- Where to begin? 1- Very high priced store. I'd expect quality for the price and it's not there. The fish department quality is on the level of Giant or Shope Rite, at 50% more in price. I brough a container of milk which was in shelf life and it smelled horrible, that I disposed of it. 2-The manager in the check out area berated an employee for no reason and that was the last straw for me. I moved my basket out of the line moved it into an aisle and left it. Berating an employee or "team member" in front of a customer is never acceptable. 3- The aisles are small and cramped. It's bumper carts trying to get something somewhere. I've moved on to Wegman's or Whole Foods- much better shopping experiences where employees look like they enjoy working at those places. read more

I like the store very much, however, I find that some of the help can be very obnoxious and nasty. There's no reason for that whatsoever. You go to stores like Trader Joe's and they bend over backwards to smile and be nice. I'm not asking for that just to be pleasant and respectful. read more

I have never written a review of a deli counter clerk before but I felt compelled to say something about Emmet at the McCaffrey's deli counter. I just back from an absolute madhouse there the day before Thanksgiving and the line at the deli counter was long and full of impatient and stressed out customers (including me!). Not only was Emmet cool as a cucumber but I saw him patiently cut some turkey to the exact (and very exacting!) specifications of elderly woman in line ahead of me. When it was my turn, Emmet couldn't have been more helpful. He was such a cheery and competent presence in the middle of a very frazzled scene. I was very impressed! My husband told me I should have gone to Whole Foods but I am so glad I went to McCaffrey's - I will be back! read more

The desserts here are always delicious, top notch, and basically bakery quality. The raspberry almond torte below was delicious, tasted like something you'd find at a specialty bakery and perhaps a lot less in price too. They have a big variety like you'd find in a supermarket (like shoprite) and prices are comparable. Quality is like Wegmans but the variety is so much better. Ordered a walnut caramel apple pie earlier and that was excellent too. read more

Mccaffreys is a nice medium sized grocery store it has great food and great costumer service this is definitely worth your time.

In the Princeton McCaffrey's, you must double-check the expiration date of all food items before you put them in your cart. There are many items on the shelves that are near or past expiration. Given McCaffrey's high prices, I'd expect that they'd keep the stock fresher. Customer flow is extremely poor. There really isn't a clear main aisle in the whole store. The produce department in particular is laid out like a maze in a rat lab. On the other hand, the meat and rear aisles are more like an Army obstacle course. Where aisles exist at all, they are full of display stands, racks, and other impediments to shopping. When I go to a grocery store, I want to get in, get what I need, and get out ASAP. This is almost impossible when there is no straight path from anywhere to anything. read more

Upscale pricing, midscale selection, downscale service--not a great combination in a "compact" store offering nothing compelling enough to warrant destination shopping. Price not withstanding, their produce is a big disappointment. I'll fill-in an immediate need if I'm in the area but my self-driving car knows to steer clear of this full service imposter. read more

This store has the absolute rudest staff ever. Multiple times I've walked past managers and employees standing talking, they look at you and don't say a word - not a greeting or even a smile, they would brush right past you and totally ignore you. No wonder it seems they have different cashiers every time - who would want to work there - if they treat their customers that way I can imagine how they treat the lowly worker. I was in the store recently and there were two employees wandering through the store together, every so often they would nudge something on a shelf but they were clearly too busy talking to each other to be doing anything resembling actual work. They were also clearly TALKING ABOUT CUSTOMERS who had just passed in front of them, it was quite obvious. Another time he checkout lanes were entirely backed up, and customer service started taking people - but then AFTER standing there for 5 minutes waiting for someone to buy stuff, they look up and said no they can't check you out here - so it was back on the end of a line to WAIT AGAIN Stuck with a cashier who moved like a dead turtle - I mean seriously, he scanned like one item per minute. Then the customer in front of us had a card issue. Then the customer in front of us had an incorrect price. It was RIDICULOUS. I've been to other locations, but this one is the worst when it comes to actually acknowledging customers. When you walk past the seafood department, the STINK of fish permeates even wearing a facemask - I don't know how people could even consider buying fish there. You go in a seafood store, it's not supposed to stink like rotten fish. I learned to walk down the other aisle to avoid as much of it as possible. Pros: they do have nice produce, bakery is so-so, they do have a nice meat department. Prices are higher-than-average, but obviously they are a small chain and don't have the buying power to compete with the bigger chains. read more

I was at a thanksgiving dinner prepared by McCaffreys Princeton and it was awful-you could have poured the stuffing from the gravy ladle- the host was so embarrassed- they would have done better just providing canned goods and stove top stuffing than the gruel they packaged - host ended up serving pigs in a blanket to appease the crowd- very disappointing - I hope she (the host) requests a refund. read more

I absolutely hate this store. The produce goes bad faster than my CSA's produce. The checkout people are slower than any from Walgreens--it takes 10 minutes to check out each person in the 10 items or less line, always. 2008, present. Omg they are slower than dirt. $6 for Hellman's. $10/lb for fresh peanut butter--more than Whole Foods or Whole Earth. I wish I could say that it's due to the Princeton location, but the prices are the same in West Windsor & Yardley. The quality of their meat is excellent, but the prices are higher than even the meat raised at Cherry Grove Farm. On a positive note, they occasionally have blueberry antioxidant Salada tea. I don't get it. Poorest service, selection, & overall quality coupled with the highest prices in the area, yet they seem to be popular. Maybe it's like King's in Ridgewood, which has been just as awful since I had to use it between the 80s-present, or keeping the old exit numbers on turnpikes that don't relate to mile markers--the baby boomers like it and don't care for change, so here you go! Edit: just checked our jar of chicken livers, purchased 10/04/2016--its expiration date was 10/06/2016, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was still on the shell. read more

Princeton, NJ location: Lovely store, clean, organized, with many wonderful selections throughout that I didn't know existed in New Jersey. I live half-hour away, so only been to this store once before, last year, but I like what I saw this time. Prices are competitive too. FYI: Be advised, a strange older male customer harassed me while I shopped, first commenting on my camera, then aggressively commenting further and demanding I respond. I chose not to and walked away, but he shouted nastily after me. A few minutes later, there he was again, even worse. I later called up the store and asked if they have a security guard on duty, as I hadn't seen any at the time. The manager on phone condescended to me, saying that he felt it was an isolated incident and not to worry. But that was not my point. In short, mgr talked over me, said ask a store employee for a manager for help. I may or may not shop there again, will have to think about it. (unknown if that customer is a regular, so suggest no one bring a regular camera into the store, lest you encounter him yourself) Meanwhile, the Princeton Shopping Center at large, where McCaffrey's is located, is quite nice, tastefully landscaped, with various diverse shops, including a shop where local artists can exhibit and sell their works. read more

Rating: 3.5/5. Pros: A lot of interesting organic products are available. The bakery, meat and cheese departments are the best in the area with Whole foods. I love the Pecan and cranberries bread! They carry the best nutrient-dense, organic, vegan and delicious crackers: Mary's gone crackers "Super seed". Produce and fishes are extremely fresh. Check-out is fast and the staff is friendly. Cons: Their unappetizing buffet of prepared foods should benchmark Whole foods. The Pediasure chocolate is significantly more expensive than at other grocery stores. read more

McCaffrey's is like a mini version of Wegman's, or an expanded version of King's. Of course, some items here are expensive. This is chichi Princeton, and stores can charge whatever the market will bear. The meat here is priced sky-high, but the fresh fish is worthwhile. The produce is excellent. The deli department has a daily selection of appealing salads and prepared hot foods. There is a little kiosk with a nice selection of fresh roasted nuts and coffee beans. The bakery department is great; They have hard-to-find, Russian corn rye bread, which I love. read more

I don't mind long lines as a low-price establishment (even though McCaffrey's lines exceed even cheapo places.) Here you pay high prices, while they are saving money by understaffing the registers. I came into the Princeton store around Noon on Sunday (12/29). I've been sick with a cold and needed something special to feel better. I thought what would be nicer than some exceptional soup from McCaffrey's! I passed many other establishments along the way, but what could match the freshness and quality. After all, McCaffrey's is more expensive than Shoprite, Wegmans, and most stores. I purchased my soup, arrived home, and thought this is just what I needed. However, the soup was SOUR. I didn't realize it at first since I just took some cold medicine and being sick and all. I had a family member taste it and sure enough it was old, so old that it turned sour. I've always felt that McCaffreys represented freshness, quality products and "homemade" awesomeness in their prepared foods section. I would have returned the soup but I wasn't abut to drive 10 minutes each way. I would have called but I was put on hold and I just didn't feel like putting up with that crap. McCaffrey's Chicken soup - I think cambells out of a can, tiny pieces of chicken, with that typical yellowish, slightly oil slicked water and the overcooked mushed noodle. I do not shop at McCaffrey's but only a few times over the last 4-5 years - So they didn't lose a customer. If they were trying to poison me, needless to say they will have do better next time - Oh wait, there will never be a next time! read more

On my recent trip there I was reading the ingredients on the bread. Floor minder (fellow in the pink suit. or was is it orange?) told me "it is a very good bread." Being a difficult European I replied that I am looking for bread with less than 5 ingredients. His reply was: "This is America! If you want this kind of bread you should go to Whole Foods." I am still thinking what did he mean by "This Is America." I think that those folks got to live up to date, really. I am not even talking about their minuscule selection of Organic produce, which they probably consider also some anti-American plot. I love this place! Why can't they have a location near me in Boston? I would shop here all the time. It's basically a cross between a regular grocery store and whole foods. There's a huge salad bar, olive bar, coffee bar, bakery, large hot and cold prepared foods sections, cheese section, and a large fresh fish selection (tons of tasty choices like Alaskan salmon). And on top of all that they have a normal grocery store with all the normal choices. Since I was only visiting I couldn't get normal groceries except some tasty cheese and some chocolates, toffee, and mints - that were on a table that had a bunch of fancy candies on it. Everything we got was really great, and other foods I've tried from here (at bf's family's house) has always been good. I can't wait to go back here again! read more

I can honestly say that this is one of the best supermarkets I've ever been to. I truly hate supermarkets and the overall grocery shopping experience, but McCafereys really makes it bearable through their superb organization and wide variety of options. Being an almost full time vegan and overall healthy eater, having a supermarket with some healthy options is huge for me. However, McCafereys goes the extra mile by providing a majority of healthy options through out the store. Never have a seen a supermarket, aside from who foods or trader joes, provide so many healthy options as well as overall diversity of choices in just about every category. Like any supermarket, it can and will get very crowded at certain times on certain days. Even with this, the line moves very fast and the cashiers buck the usually terrible customer service trend by being helpful and decent. The have a hot food buffet that is also very good and provides a variety of healthy and traditional options. They also had a decent salad bar, though it could have a little more variety. Overall McCafereys is an excellent place to grocery shop. Great variety, food is fresh and they also have a large selection of organic options for just about every category. I've found some items in here that I can usually only find at whole foods. This looks to be my go to for everything grocery related, and what a great option it is. read more

Just got an awesome half sheet cake with a shark design, cannoli filling & vanilla cake for our grandsons 3rd birthday. They designed the cake amazingly artfully & of course it was beyond delicious! The bakery, along with the other fresh foods departments are exceptional & accommodating. We are enjoying the wine & spirits selections when grocery shopping. Makes things easier, one less stop for wine! I've been shopping at McCaffrey's since it opened as I worked in Princeton. Now a stay at home mom & Gran, I still love this store as much as ever and drive the 10 miles passing by several other grocery stores. It's worth it for everything I need! read more

It's a well-run grocery store that feels less impersonal than the bigger chains out on Route 1. Their meat section is better stocked than Wegman's. The produce department is smaller, though. While I purchase most of my groceries from FreshDirect, I do rely on McCaffrey's for any items I need in between orders. During Hurricane Sandy they were a godsend. They have jumbo sized generator and kept us well fed The McCaffrey's food show held during the Fall is becoming quite the event. If you love samples, mark it on your calendar. I'm taking away one star because of their hot foods buffet. I would love to use it on evenings when I don't feel like cooking, but the items they put out generally look unappetizing. Their manager should check out the buffet at Whole Foods to see what one should be like. read more

I do have to admit that I miss McCaffrey's prepared foods section, which is more reasonably priced that that of Whole Foods and has all of the essential dishes, along with an Asian section during the day. This was my first time back in over 4 years and was very happy with the rotisserie chicken and scalloped potatoes that I picked up for dinner - along with the bagels (only $.60 each!), challah bread, and Tate's cookies. This store is clean, well stocked, has good produce that isn't moldy, a small organic selection a good bakery and prepared foods selection and it's right near Princeton. It's a standard grocery store, well-run, with a few more organic vegetables in produce than the average food store. That's what keeps me going, plus the great selection of Amy's frozen foods, and good pet supplies. I don't much care for their prepared food bar--it's standard American fare (and I'm vegetarian) and it all tastes mediocre, even the vegetables. However, they do get some really great specialty cheeses, fish and breads in the deli. It's a good place to buy a birthday cake. And, it's convenient. The ATM in the lobby is no-fee. I shop here about once weekly, buying perhaps half my groceries, with the remainder coming from Whole Earth Center. Decent flowers and plants. It might be cheaper to drive out to Route 1 to the mega-markets, but the gas the time would not be worth it for folks living in town. read more
