McCarren Park - Spots lit af - Parks Near Me - Brooklyn, New York

I went to see Solange Knowles and some other cool artists perform here yesterday and while rain was expected, it didn't rain! I love that this park is literally a stones throw away from the Nassau G train stop. At least from what I noticed yesterday the park is clean, peaceful (besides the concert music) easy to get to and navigate through, and in a convenient location for me. Enjoyed being here yesterday...but who doesn't love beautiful weather, fresh air, fun people, and good music. read more

This is basically the hipster hangout spot. It's the Brooklyn version of Washington Square Park. This is a nice place for a picnic. There is a track for joggers, which is a cheap alternative to the Y. There's also a soccer field, basketball court, and handball court. The pool is quite a walk from the main park. It's past the soccer field on the northeast part of the park. I really want to give McCarren Park a higher rating- there are so many hot women and it's just a nice recreational area for the community. However, it's simply too small. There are two baseball fields in a narrow area. If someone hits a home run and a passerby is not paying attention then they could get hit by a ball. Since Williamsburg is so congested, you can't really expand the park. Basically, McCarren Park is a great place for a first date, a nice place to walk the dog (please clean up after them), and a nice place to jog. However, a softball league should think twice about having games at this park. read more

This is an interesting park since its broken up into like a few different parks across the street from one another. There's a lot going on. Baseball, soccer, people getting that bodyweight, calisthenics workout in, a track and field, skate park, swimming pool, movies during the warm months, ice skating during the cold months, doggy park. Just a lot of shit really goes down. I know I am forgetting something. Its not the most aesthetically pleasing park since whomever runs the park tends to just pile garbage off to the sides sometime and that's a bit of an eyesore for me. But STILL the hipsters lie around near all that built up garbage. Whatever, thats cool though, right? One great thing about the park is that its close to so many shops. So you're never far away from getting some grub and bringing it over to the park. The MAIN reason why I come here though is for he fine ass bitches. I'm not even going to lie, I always see some fine ass hipster bitches coming through this joint. Its dope. Either way, this park is cool. Not the best park in the world or in NYC I feel but it has a ton going on at all times and some of the finest bitches in all of the parks in NYC. Its got the crazy concrete softball for 40 year old Latino dudes on one side and on the other side hipster softball team with names like "the grils" and the "Brooklyn Loggers" (complete with plaid shirts). A nice place to have a nap and wile away a few hours people watching. Located in Williamsburg you are a stone throw from flea markets and breweries. What's not to love? read more

McCarren Park is quite possibly my favorite place to spend my day just lying around, reading, hanging with friends, sketching or drinking frozen margaritas. Great place to go for a pick-up game of softball or soccer both. Even better place to lie around and be lazy. Sometimes a good place to meet some hotties. ;) read more

McCarren park is such a great thing to have close by. It is isn't as big as prospect or central but there's plenty of green space to hang out. There are some great workout spots and sports activities throughout the park including my beloved tennis courts. The vibe at the courts has certainly changed over the years, it used to be a few of the same crews playing all the time and now that Williamsburg is fully yuppified, the courts can be hard to get. You need a permit ($200) and even still at busy times and weekends- good luck. There can be a serious wait time to play. read more

First-off: can you say 'Flat'?! This place is flat as any bread I've ever had, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Whether you're standing on the north side by the Greenpoint buffets, south side by the famous Williamsburg bar scene, or simply right smack dab in the middle, you can see 360 degrees in every direction without a bump or hill in sight. You'll be saying, "Wow," at least once during your time here! Once you get over how smooth and still the grounds are, you'll be hard pressed to run out of things to do. Do you like to hit home runs? This place has more than one diamond to keep your wrists swinging for the fences. Do like to trot like nobody's watching? There's an olympic track with starting lines and everything so you can keep track of your training like you're one of the big boys down in Rio. This park is a fitness lover's dream (and I haven't even mentioned the hot arms throwing those footballs!) People definitely love to play at this place, and so you'd best bring your A-Game if you don't want to get left in the dust. What's really the kicker though is that view. I can remember standing under some of the big lights down there one autumn evening with my at-the-time girlfriend and marveling at how incredible the Empire Building looked as it loomed out over the water. We shared a nice little nip of chai as we snuggled under one big scarf and admired the art-deco legend as it lit up the night sky with her many magnificent lights. Can anyone say, "Amazing Date Night Spot"!? Because I said it at least six times that night! Wow I'm jacked up just thinking about it. To sum it all up: if you love a nice flat space for getting your body rock solid, or if you're looking to spice up a night out with a fresh, new lover; you can do no better than Brooklyn's own McCarren Park. McCarren Park boasts lots of activities - softball, soccer, handball, skateboarding, dog-walking, stroller-pushing, you name it. I even saw a guy slacklining here, which is where you tether a sling between two trees and then traverse it barefoot like a tightrope. I promise you I saw this in real life and wasn't confusing it for one of those segue shots from Portlandia, but I understand why you might be skeptical. Now, given the popularity of its surrounding neighborhood, McCarren's often packed with all walks of life - bro-tank Frisbee dudes, Latin Kings gang members, artsy, post-goth types, future Park Slope helicopter moms, wannabe models, actual models, designer breed pooches, so on and so forth. (Still, all of them wear black. Even the dogs.) However, remove the humans/canines and the park itself is a bit flat and lifeless. There's no natural flow to the space whatsoever, and it's somewhat choppy being cut up by interrupting city streets with full-on car traffic. The track and swimming pool exist essentially on blocks unto themselves, but hey, kudos to McCarren for having a track and swimming pool in the first place. Some years back, the latter had an alternate life as a concert venue instead of being just some defunct watering hole. But now it's a public pool again, if you brave those types. Overall, however, in a city that's home to multiple excellent parks, McCarren just isn't going to compete beyond its mediocre, mid-level status, no matter how many cool kids come through here. The park's most striking at dusk, in my book. The masses have headed home, and the field lights around the baseball diamonds switch on. Here is where the McCarren's flatness works in its favor, creating a straight-away cityscape of park meets perimeter real estate (mostly new condos), accented and outlined by those beaming light fixtures. It's got that firefly-filled, summer night feel that could be anywhere in America. Except, of course, that it's in Williamsburg. And there's probably a guy slacklining in the corner. read more

McCarren park has TOO MANY Baseball Diamonds. These baseball diamonds are dangerous to pedestrians who walk past. Many people including children have been hit by a flying ball. We need 1 or 2 less diamonds and replace them with more trees so people can enjoy nature more without worrying about getting hit by a base ball. If you feel the same. We all need to get a petition together and submit it to the parks department to get this to change. read more

I've been here a lot! I come to walk the track, to play with my dog and I've been here to go to the ice skating rink in the winter and the pool in the summer.This place is nice. The park is big and there are a lot of people just hanging out. It's a pretty nice park. Across the street is a skate park. read more

Came here for a friend's softball game and it is a pretty nice park. The fields are a bit worn and seating is a bit limited, but still a good spot to watch a game. I don't think bathrooms are very convenient here though, so might not be the best place to hang out all day, but good for a couple hours at least! read more

I love McCarren Park. It isn't huge or do anything specific that is wonderful - but it is there and reasonably maintained. I always like to cut through the park when I am walking in the area. Mainly to watch other people's dogs and curse their happiness. read more

It's a nice local park for walking around or picnic. We were here on a beautiful sunny Saturday afternoon & there was a lot of people having a picnic, walking, & playing baseball. Depends on when you come here. Sometimes it's a park: a place to relax. More often it's a park: a place to avoid. That in such a huge park there are so few big chunks of lawn to just throw a towel onto is a mistake. The best place for this, behind the bathroom house, is also one of the worst. Because. It's also where hipsters want to play frisbee, which they do right over your relaxing body. It's an area of the park which attracts people who drag large chintzy speakers on handtrucks and spread out with 50 person BBQs and blare the worst music and leave their litter everywhere. It's behind the bathrooms. There are way too many soccer games in the running track. But run the trails instead- surprisingly lovely. There are long stretches of dusty field. Why? There are delis nearby, so pick up a jank snack and chill out! Don't focus on the condominiums or be reminded of the corruption which built them. read more

Fun park in the middle of Williamsburg. This used to be a place you avoid at all costs, at all times of the day, thank God it's much better now. You can run, play handball, soccer, frisbee, do pull ups, anything you want. Nice change of pace from Williamsburg's eating and drinking. read more

This is your basic park in Brooklyn. People will be walking dogs, people will be hung over on benches speaking gibberish. Lots of bicycles and picnics. If it is summer expect people to be laying all over the grass and enjoying the summer days in the sun. Some dogs run free... people should leash them. Winter months serve as it would any other park.. cold and desolate except for in the mornings when you see people with the dogs going through. Trash cans need more maintenance in the summer months as trash sometimes overflows all over the walkways because a lot of people are eating inside of the park during these months. read more

Even though i dont own a dog i love the fact that it has a dog park. My son and i got a kick out of seeing them play around. A super plus is that we brought our goodies from Crif dogs and enjoyed the area. The tables couldnt have been out in a better place. There was a nice grassy area to chill on afterwards. I use to love this park but ever since they opened the pool, the park has become polluted. Everywhere you look you can find an empty bottle of beer, cup, or a dirty diaper. Way too many people are BBQing in the park and even on the sidewalk outside the park (I thought BBQ's were not allowed at this park!!). Ive never been so humiliated in the public place before... staffs are way too disrespectful and awful, never seen any disgusting staffs like them in my life. First, i know it's good to have regulations but they literally yell at you and say if you dont obey, they will gonna call the cops and make you leave. In my case, on the top of my body I wore a rash guard with jippers on and on the bottom i wore a swimsuit that looks like a skirt. But by just looking at what they see(cause it didnt look like regular swimsuit), they were yelling at me infront of the whole people. I asked them to touch my swimwear cause the texture was definitely a swimsuit, but they looked at me like im crazy and said "leave now, should we call the cops to kick you out?"... ok so if the swimsuit that i had was not the one that they wanted, cause they fu**ing dont know what design is, they could just tell me gently not to wear this or stay out of the water:( Why did they have to yell at me out of sudden and say that they will call the cops? People were staring at me, and even my boyfriend was mad at me so much cause our date was ruined. Even when I was trying to take my bag in to the bathroom to fix my makeup and change the pad, staffs stopped me and said no bags are allowed in the bathroom......seriously? They also told my boyfriend that he should not take a shower for that long, five minutes after he started......oh really? And the really important fact is that if you are overweight or asian like me, the staffs will stare at you, laugh and talk about you. Honestly ive been pissed off already even before the staffs yelled at me about my swimsuit. All I did for that day was throwing away my swimsuit, cry like a baby infront of the people passing by, and hearing my boyfriend yelling at me. Thank you mccarren park swimming pool staffs for giving me the worst memory of my life! You racist evils I really wish these staffs to get fired and will be replaced with the nice ones! read more

Such a lovely little park. Really puts you in a communal spirit. I've had picnics here; on Sundays people chill and lay around and just relax. People play baseball and there are skaters around and nice cafés very close to it too. The feel of this park is unlike a lot of other parks in the city. It feels vibrant, cozy, and relaxing when I am here. read more

This isn't a free park. You need special permits that cost $15/day or $200/season in order to use the courts and fields recreationally. That's PER PERSON. I just tried to play tennis and got stopped by a park employee. The courts are empty. read more

Don't ever, ever say anything bad about McCarren Park because I'm a native, lived and played here since the early 1950s, when I was born. I have pics my parents taking me there in the early '50s. I have pics of my Mom and Dad, when they were "courting" in the early '50s so I have a definite love of the place. I'm half Italian, so, "Capeesh?" Now, back to the present. McCarren includes the pool, the track, the baseball/softball fields and the tennis/softball areas known by us natives as "the tar courts" years ago. When this was a working class neighborhood from the '60s to the '80s the place was forgotten by politicians. In recent years the track has taken a hell of a lot of use with the tremendous increase in population since 2005. The same is true for the soccer field. I hope there is a healthier alternative than the old Astroturf field because walking around it the past couple of years smelled toxic on hot summer days. I'm nostalgic now because, well, my wife and I are selling our home and leaving Williamsburg and Greenpoint, and the park where my parents courted and where I played my first baseball and football games, and came back to when I got fit in my 50s and 60s. Don't ever, ever say anything bad about McCarren Park to me. Just keep it fit, healthy and thriving for all who are lucky to live here and make lifelong memories here. And, by the way, take care of that big damned tree on the entrance of the park on the corner of Lorimer and Bayard Streets. It predates me and, damn it, call me nuts but I always say hello to it when I walk my dog in the park and consider it a friend of mine. read more
