I absolutely love this park. It's great for fishing during high tide, crabbing in the summer season, and there's even free bike rentals during the summer. The path is nice and smooth for biking, skating, walking or running. There's picnic tables everywhere to sit and have lunch. read more

We visited Shirely Chisholm State Park a bunch this summer, and each time, it was an enjoyable experience. It's a beautiful park that overlooks Jamaica Bay. Admission and parking are free, and at least during the week, parking is plentiful. They have both rocky and paved trails, so it's easy to explore on foot, stroller, bike . . . Now that that's out of the way, here's why I'm really impressed with this park. . . They offer a lot of great programs and services. So great, in fact, I think the community is sleeping on them. On Wednesdays this summer, they offered fishing off the pier with their park rangers. They offer a great toddler time, with crafts, games, and a story-time lesson that would be praised in any school setting. They have a bike library Thursday-Sunday that allows you to borrow a bike (and helmet) for free to ride around the park. And those are just the ones I've tried out. They also offer kayaking tours and other activities, too. They have an Eventbrite page that you can check out to register ahead of time for their daily offerings. I'm not sure what their acitivies will look like for the fall, but I'm exited to keep checking them out. read more

One of the best and large park in NY state and NY City. Nice stuff, many Rengers on the regular working hours, many birds, animals all around. Possible to watch them, this is funny! Fields of flowers, different sorts of trees. High Hills with the view points on the top, ocean bays around, piers with amazing panoramic views, clean and beautiful! But people need to watch and follow parks rules, do not disturb birds and animals. People need cultural behaviour in this park, keep it clean and wonderful! read more

I enjoy hiking and walking along nature trails , something about the scenic views is relaxing to me. That being said , I headed out to Shirley Chisholm State Park for a walk. There are two entrances to the park from the Belt Parkway, Pennsylvania Ave & Erskine Ave. , both sides offer free parking. Park hours are 8:00 - 6:00pm daily. I got there early, the weather was hot and humid. I should have read the trail signs for distance and miles , It seems I choose the longest route There are tables with umbrellas and shaded rest spots. Free bike library Thursday - Sunday. Majority of the area is pebbles and grass be careful of ticks. The tide was low and the smell of the bay was in the air. Welp ! The great outdoors. Happy hiking ! read more

In honor of Earth day, I decided to review Shirley Chisholm State Park. I grew up with Prospect Park as my backyard which definitely help cultivate my love of parks. I vividly remember the summer that I learned to ride my bike without training wheels in "my backyard". Now fast forward to last summer, it's the joy that I get from bike riding that brought me to Shirley Chisholm along with the amazing pictures that other Yelpers posted. It's the 21st century, so man-made parks are definitely a reality. They did a really good job with this one. The varied trials that they were able to craft from this former wasteland is nothing short of amazing. The beautiful panoramic views witnessed here can't be duplicated anywhere else in Brooklyn. In addition to a great location for an outdoor photo shoot, it's also a great venue fora myriad of outdoor events like a family bbq, romantic picnic or small child's birthday party. Shoutouts go to the park staff especially those at the Bike Library who are always so helpful. I had not rode a bike in several years but my last couple bike rides have been on a bike rented from here. The paperwork is lengthy but can be filled out in advance online. There were so many different bikes and helmets to choose from that you're sure to find one that suits your needs. Whether you stay on the trails in the park or head up and down the path parallel to the Belt Parkway, you're sure to get a good workout in. Many years ago, this site was literally a garbage dump. As kids we would hold our noses as our parents drove us by, the smell was so awful. Today? A beautiful oasis in south Brooklyn. As you stroll down its many paths, it is easy to forget you are actually IN Brooklyn. Featuring two parts, picnic tables, bicycles for rent and free parking. Plus a nice dock. Visit Date: January 17, 2021 I came here on a maybe date. I wasn't sure if it was a date but I was meeting a guy I knew on facebook who I was sure I've never seen in person before although we had mutual friends and went to the same high school so I thought it might be a date but there was no flirting going on while we planned the date so I wasn't sure. Anyway we agreed to hike this park together. This park is beautiful. There aren't many woodsy trails but it's pretty walking on the paths, and the grass and even prettier when you get near the beach and the water. I had a good time on the hike but my hiking buddy and I we had awful sense of direction so we walked the same path a few times until we got back to my car. This is definitely a worthwhile park to check out in the 5 boroughs area. read more

Starting the year off right. If you are looking for an urban hike there are plenty of hiking trails at Shirley Chisholm. The park Is spilt into two parts so just try to identify which trial loop you are want to do so you know which entrance of the park to enter. All the trials there are on the easy scale but they vary in distance. The trial is clearly defined and has small gravel rocks. You can hike here with sneakers. Beautiful views of Jamaica Bay. Parking is very tight and the Park is not necessarily easy to reach by mass transit. That aside, the trails are well marked and the staff are helpful. It's amazing to consider that the park was formerly a NYC landfill/dump. Both sections of the Park are hilly. The eastern ("Fountain") side of the park is larger, road noise from the Belt Parkway fades quickly. We walked the perimeter of both sections, about 4.5 miles. Lots of birds and small wildlife. Note that perimeter trail is primarily paved, however the trails in the "Penn" portion of the park are principally gravel. No dogs. No kites. Limited services (though abundant port-a-potties where you would expect them). read more

The lady navigating the cars to parking was not nice at all. Said parking was full, even though plenty of cars were leaving. So we just parked on the streets, a few blocks away. The 'park' is just a few hills with walking/biking trails surrounded by water. Nothing crazy scenic. The water is pretty warm, clear, and shallow, so swimming and splashing around in the summer is possible. Tons of mosquitoes and insects, so take some bug repellent. Many small animals running about, like rabbits and chipmunks. A plethora of musical birds will make your trip here more melodic and entertaining. Appreciated the surprise water bottle refilling station amid the 'wilderness.' Picnic tables available throughout the area. The park closes at 8, and the staff lock the gates promptly, so don't get locked in! read more

The one recommendation would be to give a civil rights icon a namesake park that wasn't a former garbage dump. But that (needed) point aside, it's a beautiful park. It has excellent views of the water, and the staff there clearly wants people to return. What I love is the larger, less popular for whatever reason, eastern half of the park. It's a great stress relief valve right off the Belt Parkway. I highly recommend it. Once this pandemic ends, I'm sure it will be a great great respite for holiday shoppers looking a breather after shopping at Gateway Mall. read more

I've never hiked a day in my life and for some odd reason I had the urge to do so earlier this week. I came here on a Tuesday sunshining morning ready to conquer the land. Music blared from my headphones as I trekked the Red Tail Trail. Encountered a butterfly -- when's the last time you've seen a butterfly? The water views are great and peaceful. There are several benches that overlook the water and is the perfect place to journal, eat lunch or just sit still. If the park had Wi-Fi, it'd be an awesome place for remote work. I did notice most of the grass is overgrown and dry. I understand the summer heat plays a role but I do wonder if this is a common sight when hiking. Also, let's not forget what can be hidden in overgrown grass -- wildlife. Hence why I don't hike, wildlife and I aren't friends. Nope! Nonetheless, I'm glad I did my first trail. It was a calming moment before the start of my day. read more

When I heard that the grand opening was scheduled in July 2019, I was ecstatic. I'm so excited that this state park opened in my neighborhood. Although, there are several parks throughout the neighborhood and all over Brooklyn. This park is special because it is Brooklyn's first state park and it is named after a former Brooklynite. Shirley Chisholm was an African American woman who accomplished many achievements during her lifetime. It is befitting to have a park named in her honor is a testament of her works and impact on the community that she served. My favorite part of the park is the trail path throughout the park. A staff member told me bikes are available for free usage Thursdays through Saturdays but I believe that it is on first come first serve basis. Fishing is allowed in designated areas but swimming is prohibited. Grilling is not allowed but you can have a picnic. No fires are allowed, no dogs, and there was a sign that said keep the wild animals wild. The hours of operation is 9am-9pm Monday through Sunday. The last entry into the park is at 7:30 pm. Security staff will not allowed you to enter the park after the cutoff time of 7:30. There are several picnic tables with colorful umbrellas. There are ample portable bathroom throughout the park. It is very nice and it is very scenic and I plan on visiting this park often before the weather changes significantly. read more

Wonderful park with plenty of trails to chose from. You can hike, run, and bike here! The fountain ring drive loop trail is about 3 miles and it is paved road with wonderful views, but if you are up for more of a challenge (running and hiking only), try the great blue heron, falcon, and gull trail. They range from 1.5 miles to 4 miles depending on which trail splits you take. The great blue heron, falcon, and gull trails are graveled trails with a lot of uphill and downhill slopes- so make sure you wear the right shoes to run / hike. The only downside is that this park doesn't allow any dogs. Other then that, you will be able to see a lot of wildlife, from snakes to rabbits. Also beware of ticks! Happy hiking! read more

Gorgeous, serene, scenic park right along the Belt Parkway. Came here two weekends in a row to enjoy this park and rent their free bikes. I haven't been on a bike since I was a teenager, so this was definitely a fun treat for me. The trail wasn't that long so I didn't feel super exhausted. At the end of the trail there's a tranquil shaded area for fishing out the pier. The park is newly built, and renovations are still underway for parts of the end trails; it wraps around the side of Fountain Avenue. I really enjoy this beautiful and clean park; it's one of the few things NYC has to offer that didn't pack a surcharge. Arrive early so the bike trails wouldn't be crowded, there's ample of parking spots on the Penn Ave side. Would like to one day go on the Fountain side and see this amazing park read more

Overall: This is a great park for several things! Great for large groups, a cycling crew, or a couple on an active or romantic picnic date. You can go for a walk, hike, bike ride, picnic, and water watching. It's free and there's a parking lot. It is a huge state park, I believe one of the largest in NYC. There's a bike trail (Shore Pkwy) starting from Queens all the way to Brooklyn and running along different neighborhoods in BK. The Good: Did I mention there's a parking lot? Amazing bike path - Shore Pkwy runs along it. The outer loop of the first side of the State Park is about 2.5 miles. When you cross over the bridge there's another .5-mile path to ride a bike. The rest of the trails are dirt and rock so be mindful of that. I only like to ride my bike on smooth paths. Perfect for an afternoon walk/hike or jog! The picnic table areas are throughout and the water views are peaceful! Waterfront area for fishing. The Bad: I wouldn't say there's anything bad, I wish it had more paved paths for bikes. The water view is great but the inner views of the park are mehhh lol, it's not like a luscious green park with huge trees and water fountains. It's no central park. Must-try: Definitely would vote this State Park as a must do. Pack the kids up or the bike and check it out! read more

How Fitting to have the amazing Shirley Chisolm State Park dedicated to the Legend/Civil Rights-Political Activist/Pioneer and Brooklyn-Born Bred Shirley Anita St. Hill Chisolm! She was definitely a trailblazer w/ numerous accolades including being a teacher. Ms. Chisolm was the first Black Woman in Congress as well as the first African-American woman to seek the United States presidential nomination, not to mention she was a proud member of the NAACP, The Urban League, the Democratic Party Club in Bedford Stuyvesant aection of Brooklyn, etc. Much more could be stated about Shirley Chisholm, so it truly is a no-brainer to have the Shirley Chisolm State Park in existence in her honor. When I first looked up ways to travel there via public transportation, the main thing mentioned was to take a specific bus and walk 30 minutes. Although I enjoy walking, I wanted to save my walking energy for the actual park trails experience, therefore deciding to seek alternate travel options. Upon arrival, I absolutely loved seeing the Shirley Chisolm mural created by Artist Danielle Mastrion - really a colorful + wonderful masterpiece! One of the Park Rangers provided me w/ a map and it is then that the journey began. Acres and acres of glorious greenery, beautiful gravel/non-gravel trails, breathtaking scenic views, etc. awaited during my three hour visit. Taking deep breaths of fresh air, feeling the nice breeze of my skin and taking in all of the fantastic sights along the way put me in a peaceful, calming mood. Shirley Chisholm State Park is sivided into 2 sections encompassing the Pennsylvania Avenue Entrance + the other w/ the Fountain Avenue Entrance. The Penn Ring Drive Trail on the Pennsylvania Avenue side of the park allowed me to view individuals enjoying the beach-like area while fishermen were catching seafood. The Penn Pier is where people can use fishing rods supplied by the park to fish and someone actually caught a fish! Walking near the highway, there is an area connecting the two main park areas together. The Fountain Ring Drive Trail on the Fountain Avenue Entrance side of the park has the Fountain Pier ( I stayed there for awhile and enjoyed this space) and many more hikinh spots to observe scenic views. I felt like I received an extraordinary workout. Nunerous benches, picnic bench areas, portable restrooms, beach-like areas as well as a Bike Library Program in which people rent and ride bikes to use along the trails are all available at Shirley Chisholm State Park. To preserve this marvelous park, there are rules such as no grilling or fires, no pets allowed, no smoking, no feeding the wildlife, etc. I definitely remembered the rule of walking only on the trails beacsue there are ticks and it is important to keep yourself safe and to preserve the wildlife. Shirley Chisholm State Park is open all year-round and closes everyday at dusk. Shirley Chisholm State Park is a true close-to-home /away from home but kind of in your Brooklyn backyard oasis! This place just opened up this year, and I think it's been a godsend for a lot of people in the area to get away. Hearing that there's a State Park in Brooklyn is a bit odd, but I can attest that there's a wide expanse of area for people to just walk and be with their families. There are many trails that can be walked, and the gentle change in elevation suits many different abilities. There's even a set of piers that remind me of Coney Island. While there's not much to the park now -- still a lot of dirt paths -- I can only imagine what it will look like in the years to come when trees are planted. I'm rooting for you! P.S. The parking lot gets full very quickly especially with the COVID-19 crisis, only 10 cars are being allowed after 10 cars leaves. Since it's near the Belt Parkway it's a pretty congested area, but there are parking along the side streets. Our "First Day" hike on January first this year was at Shirley Chisholm State Park, partially to honor Shirley Chisholm on the eve of the inauguration of Kamala Harris. She was the first African-American candidate for a major party's nomination for President of the United States, and the first woman to run for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination. It may seem odd to have a former "dump" honor the first female/black presidential candidate, it serves the community she loved. At points you can see the Manhattan skyline; at points the Verrazano Bridge; at points Jamaica Bay; and at points you feel like you are no where near the city. When stepping out of the car you hear the traffic of the Belt Parkway and think "this isnt relaxing", but step a bit into the park and the sound of the traffic dissolves and it is quiet. Our next trip to the Park was for a ranger led hike on Valentine's Day, a very (very) cold day but we were determined to spend the morning at a place we love. Our tour was led by Ciara, a smart and interesting educator who provided us with binoculars and helped us to see birds we never would have noticed otherwise. She shared with us the history of the site as well as the rationale for the design of the park and the birds and animals who frequent there. Since it was snowy we were able to analyze the prints in the snow and figure out who had been there recently. It was really fun! Ciara told us that in the summer there is a free bicycle library to borrow bikes and travel the park which would be so much fun! There also are moonlit hikes. All hikes need pre-registration. We will wait for it to be warmer to attend the moonlit hikes, but we will definitely be back to this lovely park. Since it is a grasslands park there are very few trees so wear sunscreen and a hat! Hard to believe that the dump that many of us recall "rolling up the windows as we drove by" is now a special space for all to enjoy. Highly recommend a visit to this park, and read up on its history before you go so you can truly appreciate what has been done to transform this former landfill into a lovely city park. read more

Really nice park in Brooklyn, NY. We are in town for several weeks and are always looking for nice places to walk, which are far and few in the area of Brooklyn we are staying. We really liked the park. It's easy in and out, which is a big bonus and despite being a former landfill - has really nice waterfront views along with wildlife. There's a decent length large gravel loop trail as well as a paved walkway that ends at a pier where people can view the water, fish, or watch the planes coming and/or going at JFK Airport. It's one of the nicest parks that we've been to aside from Central Park in all of NY in our opinion. read more

Unexpectedly, no dogs allowed, despite being a park (and a spacious one)! There are several hiking trails and the pier is a nice place to sit and have a picnic lunch. The dog ban probably explains why it was so deserted when we went; better off picking a hiking spot where you can bring the whole family. Every weekend I head to Shirley Chisholm State Park to bike ride and get some fresh air. It honestly is the best & newest edition (with some other recreational parks) in our neighborhood. It's a getaway that's close to home and a place to go to, to destress, exercise and just get out there for an adventure; by yourself or with family & friends. It's beautiful! They're still adding new parts to it every time I pass by or go to the park, continuing to add to its beauty. East New York needs places like this for kids to enjoy when they can't run wild on their sidewalks like I was when I was kid growing up in Canarsie. This place adds exuberance to anyone's daily lifestyle, weekend getaway or just exercise routine. It also brings a lot of beautification along the Belt Parkway. You can borrow bikes from the Bike Library if you don't own a bike of your own. You also get a helmet along with it and just leave your ID in place of their property. Usually when I go on the weekend mornings, the popular side of entry is Pennsylvania Ave, coming off the Belt Parkway going east bound. However, alot of people may not know that the next exit Erskine has an entrance to the park too. It is less congested that way and also if you don't get to park in the parking lot for that park entry, there is always street parking. Once inside the park, you have designated signs that tells you the amount of miles you've walked/jogged/biked and rest stop areas that go out as a pier or where you can sit alongside a shore or lake to look out onto the water. Every time the weather gets nice people set up picnics on their own or just relax at the picnic tables they have set out. There is no BBQing in the park on your own but there are places you can put picnic blankets or set up camp at one of the provided tables. They are also food trucks that come by! If we as a community continue to respect our park, keep it clean and safe. It will stay the way it is. read more

I went back to the park today. Decided to do the fountain loop side but i wanted to check out the hill trails. Sooo glad I did! I found a beautiful spot called the Sky Bowl. I walked the Gull trail and thought looking down into the valley area was it. That was beautiful to see, but I saw two sets of trees in the distance. I hiked over that way and you come to a grassy s curved trail. There is a bike rack to lock a bike up and you walk the rest of the way. No idea I was going to find this huge outdoor room! It was beautiful! I was the only one there for a while. It overlooks the bay into the ocean, you can see for miles. I use hiking poles and happy I did, the trail is steep at the beginning, well for me it was a bit hard but I kept going. Slow the pace and go, I was rewarded with beautiful views and Sky bowl! I came here today for the first time with my partner and brought our Onewheels (basically an electric skateboard). We were loving the park and enjoying the views at the top of the hill until we were stopped twice by a stranger driving a motorized John Deere maintenance cart (didn't even introduce himself) and said we couldn't have anything motorized or electric in the park and that the rules posted on the sign at the front say so. He told us to leave the park and argued with us when we told him there is nothing posted saying we can't have electric skateboards. We told him we passed by other workers and they didn't say anything. He said, "Not everyone does their jobs." We were lied to and felt like he was just trying to ruin our fun because HE ..not the park..didn't like one wheels. Maybe if power tripping strangers didn't make up random rules and dogs were allowed, I'd give it 5 stars. read more

This park is a hidden gem. Biking next to the Belt Parkway isn't ideal, but it's a protected path the entire time, so it's not too bad. Once you get into the park, it's quiet & serene. In a few years, I have a feeling it'll be absolutely beautiful because everything will have grown in nicely. For now, I'd definitely suggest checking it out, because it's not crowded, so you'll have plenty of room to physically distance while working out, or just enjoying a leisure stroll or cycle. read more

Recently visited to get a little fresh air during quarantine. It's still open and there are lots of wide trails so you're not right against someone while you walk. Some of the services like the Bike Library are currently closed (for good reason), but you could always bring your own bike. The park is beautiful. You can crab fish on one of the piers or just sit on a bench and enjoy the ocean. The park is very, very clean. If you bring a lunch, there's picnic tables all over. Lots of shell shells on the shore for collecting. There's parking, water fountain/water bottle refill stations, and also bathrooms. Overall, a beautiful place that's easy to get to via bus. read more

I can't believe that I was discriminated against right on my face by a bike library attendant called Vicente just now. Here's the situation. I realized I forgot my ID by the time I was approaching the bike container. Meanwhile, this middle aged white woman was in front of me telling them the same thing ...that she forgot her ID. An attendant called Vincente told her that he'd allow her to use the bike now but she shouldn't do it again. She said she accidentally forgot her wallet at home etc. I was right behind her but just walked past them when I heard her having the same problem. I didn't want to bombard him with the same problem. Instead I searched for my ID in my photo library and approached him anyway. I was super polite and asked him if he could by any chance use my soft copy of my ID or if there anything he could do to help since I also forgot my picture ID. He said nothing works aside from a hard copy of my ID. I explained how I forgot my ID and hesitantly said I was just behind the white woman when he allowed her to use a bike. He said she left her phone with him. I asked if it's possible that I can do the same? He said no. Very frustrated I left and came to the park's booth for customer service. Coincidentally, the manager (pictured here) arrived and I explained to him the situation. He said he doesn't know anything since he wasn't there and would ask Vincente when he meets up with him for lunch in a few. He was pretty dismissive and didn't even want to hear or believe me. Mind you, these employees are also people of color & I'm sure they know what discrimination looks like. I tried to explain to this manager by saying that I was not trying to be entitled by any chance to get rent the bike without an ID but witnessing a completely different treatment vs a white person within a min gap doesn't make their service professional. He ignored me and started using his phone acting he even don't recognize my existence. I've lived in NYC for almost 10 years and this is the first time ever I face discriminated right on my face in this horrific manner. I can't explain the amount of hurt I'm feeling right now. I don't mind if "white privilege" exists but I didn't expect a refusal of service within a min while they are permitted. This is a call to the parks management to address this issue ASAP and take serious correction action so such a humiliating and quite unacceptable prejudge doesn't happen again. This shouldn't be acceptable in 2023 and in a city where the mayor is black. I've confidence in the management to correct this and make this place a welcoming environment to everyone. read more

Beautiful views! Best part: free bike rentals! Also, no dogs allowed (but seen a few). Wouldn't really recommend bringing your dog though since there are signs saying there are ticks in the park! Good for fishing, I believe you can only fish by the pier. Really enjoyed it here, will be back soon! read more

Shirley Chisholm State Park - Grassy field - Parks Near Me - Brooklyn, New York

This is a really nice park to walk or ride your bike in. Completely free to enter. There's lots of meadows, few trees, and clear paths to walk on in different directions. You can walk along the water. You feel nature all around you. There are some hills, but they're really not very high. Nice scenery for your human eye and for photographs. Coming here is a great way to feel like you're escaping the city, while technically staying inside it. read more
