My Review of My Former Employer, McClain Bros Before anyone dismisses this review by saying I'm just a disgruntled former employee, I'd like to clarify that I resigned. I made that decision because I could no longer support what I personally experienced while working there. In my opinion, the company charges customers excessively for services, especially on jobs that come through American Water Insurance and HomeServe. I became uncomfortable with the pricing practices I witnessed, and I could no longer be part of it. Based on my experience, I would personally choose a different company, such as Sila or Horizon, for work at my own home. I was also concerned about how employees were treated. In my experience, employees were paid by paper check that had to be picked up on Fridays, and I found the payroll process confusing because I received different types of checks at different times. This raised questions for me about how payroll and tax withholdings were being handled. Finally, I have still not received my last paycheck, which has been very frustrating. Overall, my experience as both an employee and someone who values honest business practices was disappointing, and I believe customers and potential employees should do their own research before deciding to work with or hire this company. read more

UPDATE 4/7/26: I have an email from the company where they stated they had a "cancellation" and can now fit me in on 4/14. I will update the review after their restoration of my property is completed. BAD CONTRACTOR. DISREPUTABLE, DOES NOT STAND BY THEIR WORK, BAD COMMUNICATION/CUSTOMER SUPPORT! My water line is covered by a protection plan administered by my water supplier. Back in December 2025, a pretty significant leak developed in my water line, which after some back and forth with the warranty company, McClain Bros came out on Jan 30, 2026 to do the repair. It was extensive, requiring excavation and digging into my sidewalk and front lawn. The technicians that did the initial repair completed the job relatively quickly and successfully addressed the leak in my water supply line. The one star review is due to the office at McClain Bros and their inability or unwillingness to restore my property in a timely fashion. Upon completion of the repair, the technician told me the office would call back to schedule a cold patch on the sidewalk and leveling out of the lawn after the snow melted. This was to prepare for a full restoration of the sidewalk and lawn sometime in the Spring. Totally reasonable. After a little over a month of not receiving any updates, I called their business office on March 3, and the representative told me I was on the schedule and that restoration would take place in the Spring. Since there were only a few weeks left in the winter at the time, I figured that was okay. Imagine my surprise when a few days later, I received a card in the mail stating my restoration would not be complete until June 1! This is a safety issue and my property currently, after 2+ months since the repair (4/7/26 as of the date of this review), still looks as pictured. I've emailed McClain Bros multiple times to try to get my property restored, but every time I email them I get a litany of excused about weather, project timelines, soil/ground conditions, etc. In my latest email response to them, I asked the manager (?) Devin, how would YOU feel if this was YOUR property 2+ months after an excavation? I have even reported the issue to my township code compliance office and they STILL haven't done anything or communicated anything about scheduling a date for the restoration of my property. Goes to show you how little they care. This is a safety issue and my property is an eyesore because of McClain Bros failure to finish the job. I'm not asking for anything unreasonable. I just want them to finish the job and fix my sidewalk and lawn. I have reported McClain Bros to the Better Business Bureau in hopes that they can help address the issue. Due to the above issues, I cannot in good faith recommend anyone use McClain Bros for any advanced plumbing work, especially if said work requires excavation/digging or other actions requiring follow-up restoration. read more

From the start Dave Schilling and his crew took control stopped the water ripped walls out and got big fans to stop mold from growing. So PECO hired contractor to drill lines in my neighborhood in doing so they damaged some of our sewer lines. They hired McClain. When McClain came out to scope my line, they broke cleanout cap. They replaced with a plastic and rubber cap which was flush to driveway. When they did the sewer work they ran over that cap with backhoe track breaking it. I told technician and he said he would let office know. It took me calling for them to come out. They then replaced with this. Something which would puncture a tire, is a tripping hazard and would damage my snowblower. We called to complain and said my wife was being rude. Also said this is what they always use. Really??? Now going on 5 days waiting to have replaced so I can park in my driveway. They lack communication and professionalism read more

McClain came out to fix a simple clogged drain on 9/30. When he loosened the pipes, it started to leak through our ceiling causing a huge hole and crack across our dining room. The tech and their manager both admitted fault and said they would fix the ceiling asap. 28 days and 11 phone calls later, and nothing is fixed. They promised they would be out today to fix it and are now ignoring our calls and leaving us on hold for 15 minutes at a time. Unprofessional, unethical, and unacceptable business practices in every way. I have never experienced such a negligent company. I would not recommend McClain Bros! I hired them to install a water heater and two decks. The guy that installed the water heater never attached the hose for the pressure valve. He stuck it in the hole but never attached it properly. I did not know this until after I had issues with the decks. The company gave me an estimate for the front and back decks. I agreed to the quoted price and paid a deposit for them to start. I was told two days to complete the job. The contractor came in on the first day and disassembled the front deck. Leaving the joists in place. The second day they disassembled the back deck. Leaving the joists in place with no way for me to get into my house without using a ladder. The did shabby work, it looks horrible. The nails are popping out. Yes, nails, they did not use screws until the nail popped out or busted through the boards. The posts to hold up the steps are attached with two screws holding to the concrete slab. They never finished my back deck. They forgot to add steps to the back door to enter the deck. It was in the estimate to have two step with a rail, as it was before. The estimate also included replacing my back door and reframing the new door. They added three step and no hand rail. The steps were over the door opening and I was unable to open the door. When I notified them there solution was to push my door open from the inside and break the bottom of my door. It also scratched up the top step board. The door would not shut, so he sanded down the top step to get the door to shut. It looks horrible and the door does not shut properly now. The owner of the business comes over to check out the situation and tells me his guy under estimated the job and he is not going to finish the work until I pay him more money. He told me he will not replace my door as it was stated in the contract. He was going to take the remainder of the wood and be done with my project. He took about $1000. or more, of wood from my front yard, that I paid for. He left the front deck unusable and unsafe. He never finished the back deck, leaving important supports left undone. He is a thief and a liar. Do not use this company he stole my money and left the project unfinished and unsafe. read more

I called & was told they won't be able to get to you until Monday...this is Friday. Unacceptable! My original call was Wednesday morning. I was assigned them from my warranty company. The first three appointments they scheduled no one ever showed and no one called. I spoke with 4 different girls from the office and they all said that they would call me back and I never heard from any of them. This went on for 5 days. After they left on our fourth scheduled appointment my clog was worse than when they started. They told me that my front yard would need to be dug up. I brought in another company that showed up within a half hour of calling them, and they fixed my clog within an hour. McClain Plumbing was very unreliable and unprofessional. read more

McClain Bros. Plumbing was sent by Home Depot to install a new garbage disposal bought there. Their installer did the WORSE AND SLOPPIEST job imaginable. He obviously had zero experience, did not come with proper tools, completely botched every aspect of the job and left a mess we had to clean up. NOTHING about this installation was even close to acceptable. McClain has promised to fix it, bit is clearly stalling - I think they hope if they drag their feet long enough, I will just go away. Meanwhile the disposal drips, the sink is not properly sealed our positioned under the counter. A complete disaster. read more

My experience with McClain Bros. has been fraught with negligence, ineptitude, outright lies, and theft. They're currently holding $2,800 from us, and all we received was an open cesspool in our basement - which they left to fester before we were forced to call another company to finish the job. 34 days into an insurance claim with American Water Resources, McClain Bros jack-hammered open a 2ft x 4ft hole in the concrete floor of my basement, exposing a cesspool below (due to a collapsed sewer line), and left. Once off-site, and after numerous phone calls, we find out that the original plumber they had come out to assess the job grossly misdiagnosed the severity of the issue, and proceeded to QUIT HIS JOB at McClain Bros. shortly thereafter. At this point, owner Mark McClain tried to strong-arm me into a into an extremely costly ($20K), unnecessary scope of work. A full sewer line replacement, including a 20-foot span from the curb to the foundation, which would require the removal of a 4-foot high retaining wall, a patio and a large tree. He tells me that I will have to pay out-of-pocket and try for a reimbursement from AWR if I want to begin the work any time soon; otherwise we will have to file a new claim and wait for their response (which is a 30+ day process; leaving my home uninhabitable during that time). I argue with Mark about his assessment, since I already have a sewer scope video from the curb, courtesy of another plumber. He says he does too. I know for a fact that he does not, because I was there when his plumbers assessed the job. I tell him to call his tech and ask about that video. All this time, he's on speaker, and another guy in the background is laughing at me. Laughing at me as I defend myself from being strong-armed into a $20K, unnecessary job. Infuriating. In the 30+ days prior to McClain showing up to remedy the job, my wife and I made hundreds of calls to McClain and to the insurance company. This is not an exaggeration. We had an open sewer line under our house which was running into our neighbors property - who we were receiving daily threats from. Eventually, the city slapped us with a water shutoff notice. Every time we called American Water Resources, they blamed McClain for the hold up. Every time we called McClain, they blamed AWR. This went on for weeks. Specifically, Becky and Courtney are the McClain representatives who have continually lied to us on an almost daily basis. Courtney is the Office Manager who takes the brunt of the blame. Becky had to man the front lines as Courtney was always "in meetings all day, but would call us back". I cannot stress enough HOW MANY times Becky and Courtney told us they understood that this problem was an emergency, and they were looking into it/escalating the issue to the proper channels and would CALL US BACK BY END OF DAY. In the dozens of interactions we've had with these two specifically, we NEVER ONCE received a call back. The only time they proactively called us was to collect payments, which we were desperate to pay in hopes of getting them to show up and work. The best part is that McClain is holding $2,800 of our hard-earned money, and about a week ago, they had the audacity to tell us that our payment had already been refunded. We obviously have documentation that it was not. Guess where we're at now. Courtney will call us back :) At first we thought this company was incompetent, unprofessional and disorganized. It's obvious now that they are negligent, dishonest and criminal. I hate that I have given these people so much of my energy and I hate that I have to leave this review, contact the BBB, The Bureau of Consumer Protection, and my attorney... but this is not OK. I almost never leave a bad review, but people need to be warned about McClain Brothers. Mark McClain and his staff take NO responsibility, accountability, and have no professional standards or basic decency. I would be embarrassed to have my name on this business. This is a plumbing company, but they advertised that they also did decks in Philadelphia. We had a miserable experience working with McClain Bros. on a new deck. We were told we would have a deck in one week, by Father's Day. Now it's mid-August and their partially-built, structurally unsound, illegally-built deck has been removed and we are out thousands of dollars and back to square one. The list of what went wrong with renovating 2 bathrooms is too long to post. just two years later my contractor discovered that McClain Brothers had installed a new tub in my house by cutting a five foot piece out of a floor joist without replacing any support. needless to say, the tub has settled and grout is cracking all around. They said they pulled a permit but I never saw an inspector. I now need to hire a structural engineer. This was and continues to be an expensive nightmare. Critical: Quality My condo did a bulk purchase of hot water heaters for over 70 owners. Each owner had to pay for their own purchase. The hot water heater cost about $800. This occurred just about 13 months ago. The install was during week of July 24 2019. A home inspection done on August 13 2020, by a professional home inspector indicated there was a leak in a fitting. This shoddy work indicated the leak had been at least several months. The picture clearly shows corrosion of more than several months. I was instructed to contact this company since the heater was under warranty. I was charged $125 service charge, but the shoddy work was their fault. I should not have been charged anything. If the installation had been done correctly there would have been no need for a service call. Poor quality costs but it should not cost me. I contacted the company to express my concern, but they were not cooperative at all. Their excuse was, that it was an expense to drive to Center City. McClain Bros. was performing work on my neighbor's home. During this process, they drove their truck onto the sidewalk and destroyed a brick and mortar flower bed/planter in front of our home. Three of our neighbors independently witnessed this, took photos, license plate, etc. McClain denies they did it and refuses to repair the damage or take any sort of responsibility. Further, their employees were extremely rude during my follow up interactions (with one exception). Scheduled a sewer inspection. I was not home, wife was home. I was told the line was holding 25ft of water and it was rotted out. Repair cost $4250. Came home from work and watched the video provided by them and did not see what they were talking about. Had another plumber come snake the drain and clean it and record another video. He says the drain is fine, no rot, no water, just some grease build up. McClain said they would come back out 2 days in a row to look at it again and never showed up. Finally, McHales Plumbing came out. Videoed the line again and also found no problems and passed the inspection. DO NOT USE McClain Brothers. They are Trying to SCAM people and do unnecessary repairs. Not trustworthy at all. Horrible customer service! Waste of money! read more

Have never hired these people but one of their trucks almost ran me off the road the other day. I was slow to go through a light once it turned green and the driver pulled up next to me, hung half his body off the window and was screaming profanities at me. They continued to follow me for miles. I then watched him tailgate and scream at two other people in front of me. Would never trust this company after seeing the way their employees act on the road. These guys saved the day!! On one of the coldest nights ever in Philadelphia, one of our radiators sprung a leak. It was 10:30pm at night and water started pouring out of one of our radiator valves. The damage was immediate. We had water dripping through the ceilings, down the walls, etc. I called every emergency plumber I could find. McClain Bros. was the only company to return my call that night. (Most others waited until the next morning and some, who shall remain nameless, did not return my call.) When I started to explain to Mark over the phone what was happening, he had me text him a photo of the issue. Then, amazingly, he called me back and walked me through how to fix the leak over the phone, free of charge. And all of this, mind you, took place after midnight. Wow! Speaking to Mark helped me fix my leak hours sooner than I would have had otherwise been able to. His honestly and courtesy helped us limit the damage to our property. I cannot recommend this company enough. I was in desperate need of an emergency plumber and found them through a Google search. I was dubious about using a new plumber, but was out of options, so I decided to try them out based on their responsiveness-- and I'm so glad I did! They handled my emergency plumbing situation with such professionalism- and were so great with communication-- even though it was on a Saturday and Sunday! Mark McClain picked up his phone whenever I called with questions and was able to thoroughly answer them and to also roll with the punches when things weren't perfectly organized on my end (I'm a property manager, this leak was at a commercial property, affecting two different units). Best of all, they did the emergency work after hours, and left the property in perfectly clean condition! That is unheard of in this industry, and I was so pleased, as were my tenants.
