I hired Goodman Plumbing, which does HVAC as well, to install a high efficiency 97% Carrier gas furnace because of positive reviews. Goodman Plumbing did not take out a permit for the job, and refused to do so when I reminded them. "Stan" and office staff said Philadelphia did not require a permit for that job (it requires a Mechanical permit) and tried to pass off a private inspector as one connected to a city permit. I finally applied for a permit myself after the fact, listing Robert Goodman as the contractor. The application is pending. I have since learned that their installation might not pass an inspection. Goodman Plumbing used a one pipe installation (just exhaust) through a window into the rowhouse air-light space between the houses. It terminates underneath a window air conditioner. A 97% AFUE furnace is a Category IV condensing furnace, which is designed for sealed combustion. It works best when the furnace has two separate PVC pipes, one for outdoor combustion air and one that exhausts the low temperature flue gases. A one pipe setup pulls combustion air from inside the house, creating negative pressure, which then pulls cold outdoor air into the home through cracks and leaks. This can reduce overall system efficiency by 3-5%, partially defeating the point of a high efficiency furnace. A two pipe system avoids this by using outdoor air only, keeping the home's conditioned air inside. Also, when a furnace uses indoor air for combustion, fumes from cleaners, paints, laundry products, and stored can be drawn into the burner and corrode the heat exchanger over time. Philadelphia rowhouses can be too airtight for safe indoor air combustion. Exhaust fans, dryers, or range hoods can depressurize the home and cause backdrafting. A two pipe sealed system is unaffected by indoor pressure, ensuring stable combustion and preventing CO hazards. Codes and manufacturers specify two pipe direct venting as the standard for Category IV furnaces to ensure: Correct combustion, safe exhaust removal, and proper condensate management. Negative pressure can also draw water heater exhaust down the chimney into the house as well as through the window AC that is over the exhaust pipe. After the installation, I started getting headaches and my dog lost her appetite and started vomiting several times a day. I turned the furnace off. My headaches went away and my dog's appetite and health returned. A Goodman rep came out to the house with a meter but only found 1 ppm. The house had been aired out and the furnace turned off for a couple days before his visit. When I turned the furnace back on, my headaches came back and my dog got sick again. I spent over $150 on CO detectors to monitor the situation, then decided to turn the furnace off until installed correctly. Goodman Plumbing was a bad choice. Update: As of 4/23/2026, Nick, the manager, has offered to come out and correct the piping on Tuesday, but would not agree to file for a mechanical permit and inspection with the City of Philadelphia. read more

Very disappointed in their service and failure to resolve an installation error on a new central heating and cooling unit. Found a crtical system component in the packaging that was not installed. Most likely this accelerated an early compressor failure. The admin office and service manager were contacted over 10 times often with no response or delays on a warranty replacement. Ultimately resolved the issue with another service company that was able to process a manufacture warranty replacement (2 years later). Not sure why Goodman was reluctant to resolve. Side note: every technician after the initial install did not bring a ladder - they kept asking to use my ladder to access the roof. The techs complained that Goodman would not provide them with ladders. read more

I have called Goodman plumbers over the years for excellent service, immediate response time, always had courteous and professional technicians. Pricy, but I thought they were worth the cost. Then I called for AC work... I won't call them again for AC work. I had a leak in the wall from a mini-split. First, I explained everything in great detail to the scheduler prior to arranging the appointment. Second, they sent out a tech who knew nothing about mini-splits. He struggled for an hour trying to remove the cover. Finally, he gave up and said their expert would come out the next day. That didn't happen due to an unfortunate reason. Meanwhile, the inside part was hanging off the wall and still dripping inside. A week went by... they forgot about me. I called them back the following week asking if the tech was back at work. They said they hired a new mini=split expert. Great! He came out a few days later. He struggled to get the cover off due to the now bent clasps from the first tech. Then he said the leak was due to a clogged drain, which runs out the wall down the outside of my house from the 3rd floor. He used an air compressor to blow out the clog, filled it multiple time with bottles of water to test. It wasn't leaking in the wall. Then he left. Within minutes after he left I went to the 2nd floor office to work and could hear a loud dripping that wasn't there before. Worried that it was STILL inside my wall, I called him back. Fortunately, he was still close by.. so he came back.. It was the outside drain - he blew the PVC pipe off the drain hose with the air compressor. But he said NO, NO, NO. He said it was a cracked drain from being old. He also told me that it usually drains outside without any PVC or downspout covering, that it was fine the way it is now. Except it's not. The constant sound of the loud drip is very distracting, it's dripping loudly onto my neighbor's roof, AND I HAVE NO WAY OF TELLING IF ANY OF THAT DRIPPING WATER IS IN THE WALL or causing damage to the stucco wall. I also checked my neighbor's MINI-SPLIT external drain - it is ENCLOSED in a beautiful aluminum down spout. My blown drain is too high up, and I'm too old to do it myself. So, now I have to hire another contractor to fix the cracked drain he created and install a new covering. I suggest you take photos and VIDEOS of all the external parts prior to service. YOU WILL NEED proof of any damage. read more

A year ago I had a hot water heater installed by another company; they did a terrible job and ultimately cost me thousands of dollars. This Saturday, the water heater made a sound so explosive it sounded like a bomb. I went downstairs and saw that this explosion actually blew the control panel door off of the water heater. Concerned that it might literally explode, I called Goodman Plumbing as they had come to the rescue previously when this horribly installed appliance left me without hot water for five days. It took less than five minutes - literally - from the time I made the call to when Sean, one of Goodman's skilled plumbers, made it to my house. Less than five minutes on a Saturday to respond to a call. He went over everything, made sure the device would be safe and pointed out the dangerous way the water heater had been connected to the main heating source. He was the third person to do this, so it wasn't about a sale. We agreed that this water heater would remain problematic and never allow me more than a few weeks' peace and that it was better to install another one, which he was prepared to do the very next day, even though it was a Sunday. He actually came with a team on Monday afternoon, so I could still put in a full day of work. Even an amateur like me can tell how much more workmanship went into the installation - and for less money than the original water heater cost. Sean made sure I understood everything about how the heater was installed and how to work it. He taught me how to safely turn off the gas if I ever felt there could be a problem. He explained the process and didn't leave until I understood what had been done. In short, he treated me like a valued customer, and more importantly, a valued person. Everyone I have met from Goodman Plumbing has been caring, respectful and supremely competent. They have responded quickly to my concerns. When we bought our house, we were warned in the inspection that our furnace - which was older than my partner and I - was on its way out. While it wasn't an emergency, it was something to kick up a rainy day fund for. Cue this weekend, we started smelling gas. After an emergency PGW call, our options were to patch the leak, or remove and replace the whole thing. We'd been kicking the can down the road, and it was time. We've been working through a lot of fun renovations lately. This definitely wasn't a 'fun' expense, but a necessary one, and Goodman did a great job of making the process as painless as possible. Our new furnace works great, their team was prompt with appointments, on top of communication, and did the work in about 5 hours all while I worked from home. We had been quoted some jaw-dropping amounts from other local companies, and their price was more than fair for all the reasons stated above. This weekend Philadelphia experienced a heat wave with record breaking highs. I have a very old dog with severe health issues who was not doing well during this weather. I tried contacting numerous emergency HVAC services, but due to the high demand no one was available. I finally got in reach with Goodman Plumbing, and they were offering to come right away. Our unit is on the roof, and they still offered to come first thing the next day. They were honest and responsive, and seemed empathetic to our situation. The guys who arrived were quick to get the job done. They located the problem and solved it quickly and effectively. My realtor, who was an absolute terror during all of this, was arguing with me over the phone and trying to get out of paying for it. They took notice to that, and offered to reduce the price for me. We called Goodman when our basement starting flooding on Easter Sunday at 9PM. Despite shutting off the water to our house, it kept pouring in and we had no idea what was going on. Jim showed up in a mask first thing Monday morning, inspected all of our pipes, and determined that the issue was actually coming from our neighbor. When our neighbor insisted her basement was dry, Jim went next door, talked to her about our issue, and asked if he could inspect her crawl space... where he subsequently found a huge leak (that had flooded not only our basement but her other neighbor's, too). When we asked Jim how much we owed him for the visit he said, "There's no charge because there was no work to be done." We saw a Goodman truck on our block a few days later, there to fix our neighbor's pipes. These guys are consummate professionals and we'll certainly be using them for our plumbing needs from now on. read more

Would not recommend, dishonest! I hired Goodman to service an alleged gas leak noted by PGW. After apparently testing my gas lines, Goodman reported multiple leaks and suggested replacing every pipe in my house. The next day I got a second opinion from another plumber and there were no leaks found. PGW came later that day and resumed service. There was never a leak at all, just a bad meter reading from PGW! Goodman lied about there ever being a leak and tried to over charge me to redo the gas lines in my entire home. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND! read more

These kind of complaints are usually associated with new ownership . Something happened. And I really hate to post this complaint...But I feel totally taken advantage of. The repair happened on schedule. But the bill was ridiculous. Me, being new to Philadelphia. (And only dealing with construction, remodeling type issues) called Goodmans for the 3rd time. My home is 60 years old. Sooo. the laundry sink corroded and leaked. Natural occurrence. Replaced and works fine. BUT...NO ITEMIZED BILL. AND they charged me $900. for a sink that cost maybe $100. and a new faucet. Sean was very personable, the sink works. He arrived at 7:50 AM, finished by 10:30 I will NOT call Goodmans EVER again. read more

As the technician, George, said to me, "We do everything we can to leave the place in the same clean condition than before we arrived." I appreciate that. They were timely in their arrival, and called when they were en route to my house. After the installation, George ran through what he did to ensure I was confident in the job competed. Goodman got back to us quickly, came to check it out the same day, and got the leak fixed in a short amount of time. We've been long-time customers and generally happy with their service, although I fail to understand why my heating needs repairs every year. A new (expensive)heater should have done the trick. The guys who come always seem competent, but they call the office to get price quotes, usually resulting in some stated "coupon" or "discount" which results in typically very expensive service. That said, wait times for service have gone from a day or two to many days, even a week, regardless of the problem. No heat for a week mid-winter while my pleas for a service call have often fallen on deaf ears. So I tend to be a loyal customer and attempted today to discuss my concerns, met with defensiveness, bad attitude and a snarky "Do you want us to come out or not?" No thanks. the contractors were extremely rude. I rent the house so they told me to go buy a house if I wanted to talk to them. the contractor is out front of my house talking about how he used to sell crack. they yelled and screamed obscenities all day. they left the house a complete mess. it took them 3 months to come do any work after looking at the problem and told my 85 year old mother they would get to it when they could. we were told not to flush toilet paper for 3 months. I have never had such a poor experience with a contractor in my entire life. I am a civil engineer and have worked with contractors for 20 years. I will never use them. read more
