We ate at the steakhouse on 7/15/22. We were impressed with the campus when we drove up. The General Store is is nice place to shop however we were not looking to purchase food or gift items on our visit. The animal safari had already closed for the day. We went to the hostess station to check in for our reservation. We were stressed out because we were about 10 minutes late. I apologized for our tardiness and the hostess told us she would be right back. She spoke to one of the waitresses and I heard her say that she needed to go set the table up which I though was odd since we had been late arriving. After a few minutes were shown to our table and noticed the place appeared less than half full. The restaurant lacked the warmth of a typical steakhouse. Decor was minimal . The lighting was primarily from ceiling can lights and highlighted the stark surrounding. There was no music and voices carried from across the restaurant were easy to hear. Tables did not have tablecloths. Our server was polite but offered the bare minimum in attending to us. We were not offered any bread and butter...not sure if that is a standard practice there as it is in other steakhouses. My husband and I ordered ribeyes with asparagus with hollandaise. He ordered sautéed mushrooms as his other side and I had a baked potato. Our plates arrived and looked like an assembly line meal at a convention. My steak was cooked as ordered but was not hot, just warm with a dark, dry looking exterior. Same fur my husband's steak. The asparagus and hollandaise sauce looked as if it had been on the plate for a while and possibly held for a while in a warmer. My potato was so cold the butter would not melt. My husband's sautéed mushrooms were whole and dark in color. While the steaks were cooked as ordered and were relatively tender, they were just mediocre. I expected a lot more in food and ambiance for $44 per steak entree. Desserts were average at best. I will not be recommending the steakhouse nor will we return. read more

An older skinny lady with the glasses made direct eye contact with me twice, she proceeded to the bakery counter opened up a magazine and started reading it. I walked over ask if anybody worked in the meat area. She said I can help you. I asked her about the fillet's, and she had no knowledge at all how old they were. There was no one elseIn the store. Love the coffee shop and my grandkids loved the petting farm. Had been told to try McClains by a number of people and finally did. We shopped, went on a safari, fead the exotic animals, had lunch, a few beers and watched some football in the tavern. Had the pulled pork sliders (fantastic) and crab claws (good but not spectacular). Had an absolute blast. We did not have kids with us but I think we had more fun on the safari than the other kids that were there. Be sure to get the 5 gallon bucket of feed...two of us were out of feed half way thru the safari (we got the one gallon). We just thought we would try it for lunch and ended up making a day of it. We will go back again...after all we only ate at the tavern, we still have to try the steakhouse and the buffet. Oh and I can't forget the staff: the gun shop, gift shop, grocery, safari, farmers market and tavern staff were all amazingly friendly and you could tell they were proud of where they worked. read more

Stopped in for breakfast and was taken to the outdoor seating area by a very sweet girl who told us a little bit about the place. Long review short, miscommunication from the staff left us waiting almost 45 minutes. We chose to leave instead of wait any longer. The place is beautiful and I think it has a lot of potential if they could maybe get the staff trained and informed of all the going ons. Also, walking through the store we were never asked once if they could help us with anything. A little personality and friendliness goes a long way. read more

The breakfast buffet is horrible! Don't waste your money! He meat options are all pork?! I found that odd since they have a butchery on site, and the taste of the food wasn't good. I've also had some of the other dishes and I've yet to Be impressed. It's nice and beautiful and the farmers market has great produce! Just buy your goods and go home and cook them. For several months (over a year) I have complained over and over that the hall where the Ladies room is dark. Not just dimly lit - DARK. The management said "It is being fixed Tuesday" every time I complained... for a year. Guess there were no Tuesdays for that time. Yesterday I went there (the food is good and I stopped going to the bathroom there) and had to fight FLIES for the food. They were EVERYWHERE!!! Crawling on the food on the buffet, crawling on my food, on my legs, on the tables. When I complained - guess what?? Someone is coming on TUESDAY to get rid of them!!! They have a "Farmers Market" attached to the General Store and Restaurant where they keep a goat who wanders all over the place and a fox in a TINY cage. The fox is SO DISTRESSED, pacing, looking scared. Not going back. Issued a complaint to the Health Department. These people don't care how filthy they are. read more

This place may have had some hiccups during first 3 weeks of opening ( per some of the reviews) I was there last weekend and I found it truly 5 star in every aspect. The food and service were outstanding! Everyone is so friendly and helpful. It is rare to find a restaurant that truly appreciates your business and wants to make the experience so delightful that you will be anxious to return. This place is not just about great food- it is " an experience!" The daily made bakery items are fabulous, seeing the exotic animals, the farmers market, one of a kind gifts for men, women and children. This may be one of the few places where women wait on the men to finish shopping! Go once for the food- you will want to return for "the experience!" We've been here quite a few times now for lunch and dinner, always on the weekends. I'm so excited some place close to home (Brandon/Flowood) has a restaurant and atmosphere like this. The McClain family has built an amazing set of restaurants and establishments on this property. The animals are fun to watch - and they even let you ride around and pet them now! Now, down to what everyone came for. The food. The buffet has always been great, hot, & steamy. The seafood buffet is one of the best in town. The price is slightly steep for the crab legs ($3/lb) but we still love what they bring! They have some of the best crab cakes in town! I love that this buffet offers ceramic plates and nice silverware to dine with. The only thing that we have turned our nose up at is the fact that a few weekends ago we were set on trying the steakhouse inside McClains. When we arrived with a party of four, a rude man at the door of the restaurant quickly asked if we had reservations and that would be needed to enter the restaurant. Before even saying anything he assumed we didn't and rushed us off to the hostess at the front of the buffet. This highly irritated me and turned us off to the steakhouse. Being that probably 30-40% or more of customers drive from over 30 minutes / an hour away to come here I would be even more upset knowing I couldn't dine there. Unless you visit the website prior we were told - you wouldn't know about the reservation. (I have not confirmed to see if this is on the website) Regardless not everyone checks a website before they dine. Bottom line, good Southern food, amazing atmosphere. Down-home service (minus the steakhouse). We will be back to the buffet and to see the animals! read more

Beautiful place! Rustic but beautiful, with an animal exhibit and mercantile store. Next door is a Farmer's market with fresh from on site eggs. Best time to see large animals is late in the afternoon in my opinion. Not sure of early morning. Breakfast is delicious! Buffet is fresh and a nice variety of food. Tavern is great! People are so friendly. Early supper was a perfect time to go. They welcome you in with big smiles and friendly employees. My husband and I stopped by to eat dinner one night on the recommendation of a couple of friends. The venue is delightful; but was very disappointed in the food. My husband had the seafood buffet; and it was okay. I, however, ordered a medium well filet with a salad. The salad was served on a saucer and very small in size. When the filet was brought, it was a black, charred piece of meat that would have been great if it had been cooked properly. Probably will not go back, so disappointed in the food. read more

This was an extreme disappointment. My wife ordered a pork chop and what came out was a well cooked dry piece of pork no garnish no side dish nothing just a piece of meat. I got a hamburger it was dry and fell apart. The bun became soggy and fell apart as well. It was one soggy bun dry hamburger disaster. And it is also extremely expensive. The bun is so thick and hard I had to remove all the bread. So part of my wife's Mother's Day was to sleep in while I brought our 2, 4 and 6 year old out for breakfast. I thought the 3 and under ate half price but no, I paid 12.50 per child for breakfast. The waitress asked could she bring our drinks I said yes. Kids got chocolate milk for 2 and OJ for 1. It came in sealed containers with cups next to them the waitress didn't pour them. I told her I wanted coffee and she said I could get that myself. I did. I had to wait in line at the buffet for the staff members to serve themselves breakfast including the waitress that said I could get my own coffee and pour my kids drinks. Not sure what the tip line was for on the receipt. At 12.50 a piece for kids breakfast and serving my own drinks while waiting for the staff to serve themselves I assume the tip line was for me so I kept that to myself. I'll keep this short: This place is AWESOME!!!!! If you like southern food this is the place. Everything I tried was perfectly seasoned. The ribs?! Wonderful! Lots of bark and the flavor just about made me pass out. There's a gift shop, a gun shop, a bakery, cold cuts and a butcher to take home and grill (steaks I mean, not the butcher!). Tuesday Night was slow and not crowded from everything I have heard we were really excited to go. Especially since the grand opening had over a thousand customers. The buffet had adequate choices. Everything looked fresh and well prepared. Southern food at its finest. The burger topped with Gouda was excellent and onion rings were good but cold when brought to the table. Beer Draft Choices were good but the beer I wanted they ran out of (Guinness Stout.) our menu orders took excessively long time to to get to us to include a side salad as an appetizer. Three of our six guests had the buffet and the other three guests didn't receive their food until the others had long finished. The Tavern is large and has numerous choices of alcoholic beverages. The mixed drink ordered didn't come until after the main course and the Moscow Mule was not your traditional drink. Food is good except for the desserts. I didn't like the taste of any of them. The man that watches over the chicken is very aggressive. He was knocking his tongs on the countertop at people that accidentally picked up the wrong tongs for the food they wanted. He did it so loud and told them not to use those that people in line were jumping. I actually passed up any meat to keep him calm. Also the hostess wasn't very friendly when asking for directions around the place. Waitresses were very nice and efficient. The man in the farmers market was very nice and personable. My rating deserves 5 stars, but for that to happen the whole experience has to be good. In this case three young ladies at counter seating customers diminished the rating. The atmosphere and decor far outweighed the food. We went with some friends on a Tuesday night. There were hardly any people there (I think more staff than customers). I liked the decor and the feel of the place and the ability's to see their exotic animals they have on the property. There is a lot of potential, but the food was terrible. We chose the buffet (instead of ordering from the menu). It was a small, simple buffet: black eyed peas, collard greens, brussel sprouts, creamed corn, sweet potato purée, flour or corn biscuits, chicken fried steak and fried chicken. The only thing with flavor was the sweet potato puree. Everything else was BLAND. The chicken fried steak was not appealing to look at and less appealing to eat. We were told it was tender by the staff behind the buffet. IT WAS NOT. It was dry and chewy. The fried chicken was WAY overdone. The salad bar offered with the buffet was as basic as you could get. I love pecan pie, so I was excited when I saw there was some in the dessert section. Disappointed again This place has SO MUCH potential with the atmosphere, overall look, the exotic animals on the property and the "meat" and "farmer's" markets, but without good food it will never become a great restaurant.
