Coach McClain is a good tennis coach. He can spot what you're doing wrong and correct you quickly but he chats you up about 30% of the hr long lesson. He also asked me to make a 5 star review right around the mid point of my lesson package (3/6) and spoke badly about people who left bad reviews and told me what to write. Two sessions ago, he asked me to show up 15 minutes early and I ended up waiting the entire time. He also spent the first 10 minutes recording a Facebook video ranting racist remarks about caucasians because he was upset the student before me seemed happy about getting shots on him when his body was weak due to arthritis. This most recent session I showed up on time but he chatted up the student before me 10 minutes past our start time as I waited outside. When I told him I had to leave due to another commitment, he did not acknowledge me at all and instead responded "no worries, I'm going home." I think if I'm being honest, I felt slightly uncomfortable as a woman about how he would text me constantly about things unrelated to our lessons (his health, his personal expenses, restaurants he would visit, etc). read more

This update comes 11 years after my initial review for Coach McClain. I loved my first session from Coach McClain in 2012, but didn't schedule further lessons because the following week, I moved to London for a 6-month work rotation. In the ensuing 11 years, I played tennis only once (with a friend), and moved to NYC to boot. On a recent visit to SF, however, I thought about Coach McClain and how he improved my game in just one session, so I messaged him to schedule another session. He quickly responded and we met up at his new location at the Margaret S. Hayward Playground in the Fillmore. Again, Coach McClain immediately spotted the problems with my forehand and suggested a practical and effective solution--a higher end-point for my follow-through, which he called "putting the spice bottle on the shelf" to remind me. He worked me through both the forehand, backhand, and volley, helping me keep my head down / eye on the ball. The hour went by quickly, especially as we talked not only about tennis but life, his motivation for playing, and our mutual experience getting older (we're both in our mid-50s now).
