If you are a black man, do not select this attorney to represent you. He has not represented me, but has represented someone close to me. He was late for court (unprofessional), and sat there and went along with what the opposition recommended. He will not fight for your rights at all, even when given the documentation to help your case (unpreprepared). It's a waste of money, and time. In our initial meeting for my divorce, I was told there was no way I would end up in a position where assets were not divided fairly, especially considering the length of the marriage--nearly 50 years--and that, generally, things would be handled in a 50/50 manner regardless of the source of funds. Based on that understanding, I moved forward with confidence in the process. However, during the Zoom meeting with my ex-spouse and her attorney, the direction changed significantly. When her attorney stated her position regarding the house and inheritance, I felt that I was strongly encouraged to accept those terms rather than having my position more firmly advocated. I repeatedly heard that I should "just take it" because it was the best I was going to get. Looking back, I regret not reviewing his client feedback before retaining him. My experience aligns closely with the concerns others have raised. Throughout this process, I often felt that communication was dismissive and, at times, condescending rather than supportive or advisory. I was also disappointed in the level of preparation and representation during our Zoom meeting. It did not appear that he was fully prepared, and much of the discussion involved reviewing materials I had already provided, rather than advocating my position with a clear strategy. I was referred to Mr. McCloskey by my friend Melissa Kauffman-Miller who was a witness in my defense case in regards to the PPO. We met with Mr. McCloskey in his office but prior we talked on the phone about defamation by the accuser on TicTok videos and we spoke about the PPO. He said that would require 2 cases and I said fine. Mr. McCloskey said his fee was $2400.00 cash and to bring it when we came to his office. When we arrived at his office and we sat down and talked about both cases and he said let's get the PPO done first. I was told to bring my video's, audio and letters along with photo's. All this was on a thumb drive. When I hired Mr. McCloskey, I had approximately 7 days to file a challenge to the PPO, so I did not have the luxury of shopping for another attorney. I told Mr. McCloskey that I was referred to him by Melissa Kauffman-Miller and then he asked how I knew her. I told him she used to live by me and that we have been friends for 5 years or so. He then stated I can give you your $2400.00 back because I will not call her as a witness because she is a pathological liar. The real problem is Mr. McCloskey read the complaint on the PPO and could clearly see this would not go to trial. He had no intension of calling my wittiness in court. Mr. McCloskey files a motion to move to a different court and it was granted. The day of the hearing he was about 15 minutes late and the judge was going between courts because the other judge was sick so she was doing double duty. If not delayed, I would have had to represent myself and I told the judge the same thing. When the PPO was dismissed because the petitioner never showed up. Mr. McCloskey opened my folder where he had my thumb drive taped to it and had me take the drive. I ask him if he reviewed the drive evidence including the TicTok videos he said no! Then on the way down in the elevator I ask him about seeing him in regards to the TicTok videos, he then took us to the room where the self help forms were and basically said ask for this and that and then left. If he was honest on the phone and in his office that he was not going to look and the defamation part I would have found another attorney. Mr. McCloskey has issues. He is all polite in court and when he is in his office, but he has major issues with people skills. I will attach reviews from other clients as he has done the same thing to me twice. On the phone you ask him a question and he jumps down your throat, yells at you. Like a pit-bull with his attack. His personal communication skills lack and maybe needs anger management counseling. Mr. McCloskey knew my husband and I were on social security with a fixed income and that we are disabled and elderly. He knew I had to post a credit card advance to cover his fee for approximately 2 hours of his time. Mr. McCloskey had me sign a contract but never gave me a copy. I called Mr. McCloskey and left a message to email me a copy of the contract and told him should have given me a copy and he has never sent the copy or called me. I have heard nothing but bad things about this attorney and I can honestly say I've reached out a few times and the one and only time I ever spoke with this man he said he may or may not be in the office Saturday and if he was not in the office that Saturday, then he would contact me the following Monday and never did. As Marty said early on, he is a "no nonsense attorney". Well in keeping with that motto, I am a no nonsense human being especially when it comes to representing a close family member. Let's just get to the point. Things Marty has done well representing my loved one: Absolutely nothing and I mean nothing. Things Marty has failed as an attorney: Being honest and upfront - Another one of Marty's phrases is "we might lose some battles, but we will win the war". Seriously? This man didn't win any battles and lost the war before it started. He will promise the moon before you give him an excessive retainer and then leave you dry. He did absolutely NOTHING but avoid phone calls. We would call his office and could hear Marty in the background talking and his Assistant would say he was not in the office. Happened multiple times. He had his assistant lie on the phone for him multiple times and then when confronted he would get mad and turn story around to make the client the liar. Competency - I had the pleasure of watching Marty at work in the courtroom. I have never witnessed an attorney so unprepared and timid in a courtroom in my life. He had to ask the other attorney multiple times for clarification on issues to the point of the opposing attorney getting frustrated, asked the judge for more time to read documents and made a total fool of himself in the courtroom in relation with basic etiquette. Communication: I overheard phone calls of Marty on the phone. He used curse words, raised his voice multiple times and belittled his client. In emails, he was sarcastic and demeaning. One red flag early on which should have ran us away. We received a call from Marty. He called thinking he was calling another previous client yelling on the phone at them immediately upon answering. Once he realized he called the wrong person he quickly apologized but was a very unpleasant experience. Cost - Despite Marty's incompetence and failure to meet the needs of his clients he charges top of the range for attorneys in the area. In addition, does not offer any itemized list of what he has done most likely because he will do nothing. If you are one of the unhappy clients who made the same mistake as we did forget receiving any retainer back, he will keep it all despite doing nothing. If you are looking for an attorney who will fight for you, be honest and upfront, treat you like a human and not talk down to you, look out for best interest of client, you should take a hard pass on Marty. read more

Female (me)... First time hiring a lawyer to assist with a family law case already underway. 1. In person meeting on a Wednesday. I paid the retainer. He said he would file his appearance by the end of the week. Roughly two weeks later that happened. 2. In the same meeting I provided to him relevant and organized documentation. MM stated we could try and go for child support back to birth. 3. I left work early on a prearranged day to sign documents for court. None were ready. 4. I asked if we would have a meeting prior to court to go over what I was looking for or if there was any information he or I needed to know. That didn't happen. 5. I was emailed about 1.5 months prior to a hearing that was set for an afternoon time. MM Law Office informed me there was a conflict at that time and were hoping to get it moved earlier in the day. They said they would let me know. I emailed 2 weeks later asking for the status. We'll let you know. I called 2 weeks later. We'll let you know. I emailed 3 weeks later on a Monday morning, received a call at about 4:15pm from MM on Tuesday asking if I was ready for the hearing Wednesday morning. Me: What hearing? MM: You didn't get an email? Me: Nope. I did try to get the information three different times by email or phone on these specific dates. MM: In a family law case, we give information once we receive it, not when someone emails or calls in asking for it. 6. During that same phone call, MM mentioned he received some documentation from the other party. 2 minutes after ending the phone call, I called him back and asked for that information to be emailed to me. MM seemed agitated as he stated he was very busy with other cases. He did end up sending it. 7. Hearing day... Negotiations were attempted. MM and I didn't have a discussion on potential outcomes or scenarios prior to the hearing which didn't provide a strong foundation for me. He made a couple statements: "I didn't know there wasn't a child support order in place." Also "no we can't get child support going back to birth, only to the date of filing." See note 2 above. 8. There was a particular situation that happened after the hearing. I emailed MM. I received an informative and helpful response, which was the only time I felt this way throughout the 3 months. 9. I asked for my client/attorney agreement a few times (emails and a phone call) after the hearing. I also asked about invoices since none had been sent since he was hired. One time I was able to talk to his assistant and she told him what I was asking for. I didn't receive the contract. I was told invoicing may be ready in a week or two. 10. I emailed MM to request his withdrawal from my case. I called 30 hours after the email due to no response, spoke to MM, and verbally gave my request, resending the email. Though it's likely not required, no confirmation of the withdrawal was sent. Two weeks later, no invoice still (3 months since hired). I'm a single mother, single income. I didn't want to be caught unaware, but I was. I go into his office and ask for an invoice. "Oh, you didn't get an invoice?" They print out an invoice and it's about $1k more dollars I owe. Since there's a lien on my file, I was told I would have to set up an appointment, to get the agreement I had asked for multiple times, as he said he was not my lawyer anymore and he had pressing things to get to. One week later, I receive it by email. TLDR; My expectations of what I was paying for (communication - taking time to learn about the case, discuss the case, discuss best and worst case scenarios, making the client feel like they are getting their money's worth, having a healthy rapport... And transparency.... Meaning adequate and consistent invoicing of expenses/fees) did not align with reality. Go with your gut. The lessons that life throws at you are opportunities for growth and awareness. read more
