Upon learning from his wife that he enjoyed fine cigars, I asked my son to buy some of the best from McCranie's Pipe Shop by the Bossy Beulah's restaurant at the Park Road Shopping Center. At the party, I took the liberty to publicly present my former student with his gift and say a few words quoting from Winston Churchill, "Smoking cigars is like falling in love; first you are attracted to its shape; you stay for its flavour, and you must always remember never, never let the flame go out," I slightly modified the quote by substituting "her" for "its." Let me start by saying I've literally walked past this place so many times and never really paid much attention to it. Well, that changed a few weeks ago. I'm new to cigar smoking and after a quick google search I learned this is one of the closest cigar stores to my home. My experience was pleasant but nothing to rave about. I will share that at the time of my visit they were closing within the next 15-20 mins. Despite that the gentleman working that day was friendly and appeared very knowledge. I ended up grabbing about 5 sticks that day, one of which is my new favorite (Perdomo Reserve Maduro 10th Anniversary)! However, I found that particular cigar without his assistance. All and all I would definitely go back. The selection was decent. I was a little bummed they didn't carry any Drew Estate cigar lines at all, but I felt they had a lot to choose from and fair pricing. What can I say? It's a cigar shop with men hanging around (no women), circles of smoke floating aloft, and a large humidor to escape the smell (or, as aficionados say, "where the good stuff lays.") Firstly they didn't answer the phone even though I called seven times which would have averted a long time wasting drive. Secondly their humidor is limited and I mean limited with a very small selection. Finally they have no place to hang out and smoke which they used to. This tells me that their business is shrinking. Tobacoo shop nestled in the parking lot, this place is pretty easy to overlook. But once you walk through the doors you'll have no doubt where you are. Hey, I grew up with my parents who were smokers so I know what it's like to be knocked down and choked out by smoke. This place is an instant reminder of that feeling. Someone please get the air circulation fixed so I don't feel like I'm above water scuba diving and holding my breath while I try to pick out a good cigar to smoke. The silhouette of the man smoking a pipe on the wooden marquee outside the store caused me to make several assumptions. I imagined that I would step inside and see a man with a fancy glass follicle in one eye, he would say, "Good evening, young sir. How can I be of assistance?" Then again, maybe a man would be seated in a mahogany colored leather chair with a long ivory pipe shooting from his mouth, nose deep in a copy of a Faulkner novel. Not at all, there were a bunch of older guys hanging out on some plush chairs in the center of the shop puffing on stogies. The air was covered with a thin blend of various cigar smoke and pipe tobacco. I am not a connoisseur, but I thought all of the prices were acceptable, and they really had a great selection. If you are new, you might want to pick up a copy of Aficionado magazine, the Blues Brothers are on the front (it's not real without John Belushi). The owner of the store recommended a plastic bag humidifier since I was new to the game; it would keep my cigar fresh for 60 days. Love this place! I stop in several times a week to keep stocked up. I find they have a great selection of cigars going from the cheap to the high end , all of which are fairly priced. I don't know much about pipes but they seem to have a large selection , including tobacco! The staff is always friendly and helpful with any questions I have and always willing to suggest something new to try! Definately would recommend this place for any newbie or aficionados! read more

I am no aficionado by any means. This is based strictly by witnessing my husband's experience. The employees were friendly and helped to pick out a few choice items. It's a small, cozy space with chairs to smoke. They have a lot of pipes (which I have no business picking up, but it entertained me while waiting for my husband to pick out some cigars). I'm sure this is an ideal man-cigar-smoker hang out and it doesn't seem like a lot of women frequent the place. So hey, ladies, looking for a guy...the ratio here is in your favor! The smoke from the place permeates every fiber of your being...and hours afterwards. Just be warned if you have somewhere fancy to go and are debating on whether to stop here first. read more

Everything you need to replenish your stogie supply! They have a great size humidor with a large range of cigars of all prices. The itty petitie cigarellos to the mama Montecristos. The staff will pop in to the humidor if you are not finding what you are looking for and help you along. You definitely don't want to be in the store a second longer than necessary because folks smoke their cigars in here and you will leave STINKING even if you are just in there for a few minutes. BLEH. But they also have everything else you could possibly need, butane lighters ($9.95), ash trays, cutters, humidors and humidor supplies. Good prices - I always try to support local even though you could save a little dough at Total Wine. We received expert advice for our humidor, instead of the silly gel packs, the staff told us to just dampen the interior of our humidor with a bit of water each week and voila! No need for gel packs! This place has been around since forever. I've been here many times to purchase gifts for the pipe and cigar smokers in my life, but never reviewed it. Today, I thought it might be a good time! You see, my husband and I were tidying up his home office desk last weekend and discovered a gift certificate (seriously, an old paper-style one) given to my husband for his birthday two years past... the expiration date? Well that was in early 2018... So I called the shop and asked if they'd still honor it... they assured me that they would without question. When I arrived, the young man I spoke with on the phone was behind the counter, and was quick to remember our call and point me towards the cigars I'd requested in the humidor. I made a selection, used my gift certificate (and then some), and headed back to the office... easy as pie, and a wonderfully smooth shopping experience. I'll be back, naturally! You need to be a gun-carrying NRA right wing nut job to really fit in. If you're a minority, don't even bother. It's a good ole boys club, without the good and more of the old. Ok humidor, overpriced, but fairly well stocked. I will say they do pipes some justice with a good selection of canned and blended tobaccos. Highlight of the store, actually. If you're a pipe smoker, it's a necessary evil. If you're an individual who thinks for himself, they'll literal;y kick you out. They did me, and I was one of their best customers. I think this place is great. I smoke a pipe, so I found it particularly attractive. They have a great selection of pipe tobacco blends, and a good cigar selection. I used to live in Charlotte, I've moved to San Diego now, but I still order their McCranies's tobacco blends. I recommend the McArris blend, it is an exceptional. The atmosphere of the shop is authentic, and comfortable. They experience is all that is manly. When you walk in you are met by the smell of fine tobaccos and hard wood. They have a beautiful array of pipes. The service is great! Pipe smoking,as I have learned it, is almost an art form. It can have its difficulties, like keeping the pipe lit, packing the tobacco properly, and how to avoid tongue-bite. Many of the little things that make pipe smoking less pleasurable can be fixed if you learn to do it right. A year ago, when I went to McCranies's to buy my first pipe I asked the guy behind the counter to for a few pointers on how to smoke a pipe. He helped me out, and solved all the problems I had had. I find it much easier to smoke a pipe now, and it has helped me develop a comfortable method of smoking. I highly recommend this place! This is a true tobacco shop. I'm making it a point to visit all in Charlotte. So far this place ranks numero UNO! 1 - McCranie's Pipe Shop 2 - Cigars ETC 3 - Tinder Box 4 - One Stop Smoke Shop I still have a good number more to check but, that is the list none the less. This is not in the strip mall but in the parking lot FYI. If you turn left into the shopping center off of park, the store will be on your right. Okay, why is McCranie's number one? First I like the fact that there were NO "bongs". Upon walking in you will see directly ahead the walk in cigar humidor with a good selection of cigars. Prior to entering the humidor there is a table with cigars on special and also sampler boxes. Only spot thus far with Oliva samplers (my fav). The only fault here to me was only offering two styles of Oliva! Though there selection is vast and many would be happy with the choices available. Lots of Padron 1926. Prices are decent as well. The right half of the shop has a large display case with lots of tobacco pipes, and what i mean is the old school Sherlock Holmes style pipe. Along with those, plenty of lighters, torches, humidors, travel cases, and other accessories. The left side of the store has a few couches to relax and smoke with some TV's to watch. The best part of this store is the help! Very friendly and classy. It's rare to have someone approach you smoking a tobacco pipe, thought it was funny at first, but the man knew his trade. He knew exactly what I was looking for and also was able to recommend a few good selections for a friend of mine who was new to cigars. I've been checking out all the cigar shops in Charlotte to see a different selection and also to see which I liked best to sit and have a smoke. I walked into this location and immediately got the evil eye. There were old men smoking having a conversation and they mean mugged me which is fine, it happens. The man at the counter had zero interest in me and didn't even offer to help. I walked to the humidor the check out the selection and it's nothing special and over priced. I then attempted to talk to the man at the front counter, he shut it down so I left. This establishment will not get any of my money and wouldn't recommend to any minority's ever. Absolutely hilarious negative reviews... from the one guy who slammed like 10 negative reviews in a row in the space of one month in 2016 (must've been his time of th- I mean, a bad month for the guy) to the one guy who has a beef with a cop who is a customer (definitely cause to slam the business, right)... hilarious... okay let's see, McCranie's is an institution among cigar & pipe shops nationwide, their business hasn't been there forever because they're doing it wrong... and I only get to go there once a few months cause I don't live in Charlotte anymore, but in all honestly, it's worth a road trip from anywhere to be a part of the iconic story that is McCranie's. Never been there but I do order bulk pipe tobacco on the phone. If your ever looking for a good tobacco that can beat "early morning pipe" by Dunhill, than order-up a pound or two of Daybreak. It's the best blend for a pipe smoker who wants a great smoke first thing in the morning after breakfast while your on your second cup of coffee. I just hope that when they take my order next time, that they ask me for my email so I can get a conformation number and maybe they'll send this Yankee boy a little bit of info on what's new. read more
