The rest of the experience was just OK... Cafe Karma is a coffee/breakfast/light lunch spot, serving coffee, teas, juices, soft drinks, and the like. Food consists of breakfast bakery (muffins, pastries) and cooked items, light snacks like quiche and croissants, and ice cream. We had lattes (per usual). Temp was great but the coffee itself was just OK, not the best. For food we had the turkey quiche and the omelette muffin. The quiche was bland, overcooked. The muffin was much better, and was definitely the better of the two selections. Staff were friendly, service was quick! With all the coffee shop options available in SPI, not sure we'd go back. Do not recommend IMHO...

We were here last week, 11/28/25. I wanted some hot coffee to take to the beach with me since it…read morewas a chilly morning. This review is really only based on the overall experience since the coffee was good: Pros: 1. My coffee order. Vanilla latte- strong and not too sweet. The cup makes a cute photo moment (pictured) 2. The baristas who took my order & made my coffee, they were nice given the circumstances (see below) Cons: 1. There was a family with (no exaggeration) 10+ children ordering before us and it was chaotic the second we walked in. The place was already packed, so it was overwhelming to say the least. I have no issues with children, as they were just being children. It was the lack of social awareness, control, & organization from the parents. Ice cream/coffee orders were being shouted in all directions, orders being changed multiple times, etc. It took so long for us to even order...and then an additional wait because they had ordered so much. I know it's not the establishment's fault, I'm just being honest about my experience. Maybe there should be a limit on how many people are able to crowd the front since it's a small space? I felt bad for the workers, they did a great job keeping it cool and professional. 2. There was a group of "Christian" men who seemed like they had a long meeting. They were having a very loud and racist brain rot induced discussion about their views on how diversity and inclusion are ruining this country. I've seen comments like that online and always assumed it was bots...was flabbergasted to actually hear it in person that was frustrating. Again, not the establishment's fault. But as a person of color myself, including the baristas, it was just very uncomfortable and wild to experience. It seemed like they felt too comfortable being that bold in there and that's suspicious to me. I literally chose this shop to avoid another notoriously racist coffee shop with a politically aggressive owner on the island! 3. The bathroom was gross. I can only give this place 2 stars only for the coffee and service. The workers all did a fantastic job, seriously give them a raise! However, we left overstimulated and extremely annoyed. Not sure if I'll ever be back. Hey, at least the coffee was good.

Coffee and tea in and around SPI - 1 of 2…read more Finding a coffeehouse that keeps later hours on South Padre Island (SPI) is not easy ... because it's not doable. Many of the indie coffeehouses on the island keep breakfast and lunch hours. Since this Starbucks sits at such a critical junction, where the two highways to/from Brownsville and Harlingen meet, you can't help but see it in the Las Palmas Shopping Center at that corner. This is also where the free Metro shuttle connecting SPI and Port Isabel stops and where the cheap and easy bus to Brownsville Airport has its terminus to service the touristic area. Am I hung up on giving exacting directions? Perhaps. This Starbucks looks like one of the common templates in terms of its design. There's nothing wrong with that because there won't be any surprises. It's clean and comfortable inside. The food and drink are the one you've come to know, and it's now a little overpriced everywhere if you ask me. However, it's reliable. The other thing that really stood out was the service. It was quick, polite, and they were willing to provide information about the area to the best of their ability if you had basic questions. These are really nice employees, which seems to be standard in the Rio Grande Valley. I went in here a few times in the evening. Their hours on the weekends are very good, staying open in the evening. Upon inquiring, I learned they do a good business in the morning. They even keep respectable hours on weekdays. Usually I'm ho hum if I see a Starbucks as one of my choices. In this situation, on or near SPI, I was actually happy to see this Starbucks store. While not quite a mirage, it was a relief.

The atmosphere was fantastic, especially with the ocean breeze coming through. We ordered the steamed mussels, the grilled red snapper sandwich, and the grilled red snapper entrée. Our favorite dish was the red snapper sandwich. It tasted fresh and had more of a homestyle feel rather than something overly polished from a professional kitchen, which we really appreciated. Honestly, everything tasted fresh, comforting, and well prepared. The service was also incredible throughout the night. The only slight issue we had was spotting a cockroach crawl from under one of the chairs when we pulled it out. However, considering the restaurant is basically right on the beach and outdoors, insects are somewhat expected, and it honestly didn't take away from the experience for us. Overall, great atmosphere, great food, and a really enjoyable dinner spot in South Padre.

It's not much to look at, small, simple, not a whole lot of improvements over the years. But, they did have plastic flaps that dropped down on the outside of the place to keep the wind and cold weather out, heaters provided too! Service by Aaron was top notch, start to finish! We initially just decided to stay to a drink and move on ... but as we sat there and looked at the menu, sipped our drinks, we saw other food coming out of the kitchen! It looked GREAT! We ordered the crispy oyster tapas (fried oysters on homemade potato chips with mango pico). They came out quickly and were oh so tasty! We were convinced! Time for dinner! We ordered a rueben sandwich (with homemade parmesan potato chips) and the snapper veracruz (tomato, onion, olives, capers) with grilled zucchini. The sandwich was da bomb ... piled high corned beef, kraut and dressing, pickles on the side. The snapper dish is one we make at home, and this one was darn good! So, glad we stayed! This place puts to shame some of the other "fancy" places on SPI! "Don't judge a book by its cover" rings true here! Highly recommend you try the Cafe! We'll be back for sure ...
