Coffee and tea in and around SPI - 1 of 2 Finding a coffeehouse that keeps later hours on South Padre Island (SPI) is not easy ... because it's not doable. Many of the indie coffeehouses on the island keep breakfast and lunch hours. Since this Starbucks sits at such a critical junction, where the two highways to/from Brownsville and Harlingen meet, you can't help but see it in the Las Palmas Shopping Center at that corner. This is also where the free Metro shuttle connecting SPI and Port Isabel stops and where the cheap and easy bus to Brownsville Airport has its terminus to service the touristic area. Am I hung up on giving exacting directions? Perhaps. This Starbucks looks like one of the common templates in terms of its design. There's nothing wrong with that because there won't be any surprises. It's clean and comfortable inside. The food and drink are the one you've come to know, and it's now a little overpriced everywhere if you ask me. However, it's reliable. The other thing that really stood out was the service. It was quick, polite, and they were willing to provide information about the area to the best of their ability if you had basic questions. These are really nice employees, which seems to be standard in the Rio Grande Valley. I went in here a few times in the evening. Their hours on the weekends are very good, staying open in the evening. Upon inquiring, I learned they do a good business in the morning. They even keep respectable hours on weekdays. Usually I'm ho hum if I see a Starbucks as one of my choices. In this situation, on or near SPI, I was actually happy to see this Starbucks store. While not quite a mirage, it was a relief. read more

i had a terrible interaction with a barista today. After my grandpa asked if it were possible to open the bathroom door due to it being locked we were dismissed and waited 15 minutes only to go back and be told once again they were just "in use". The person we spoke to had a terrible attitude and was dismissive to anything we tried to say. After not wanting to interact with her again we went to another person named Martha. We've been visiting the island for about a week and one thing we noticed was the fact that the water comes from the Rio Grande and it does not taste very good. So we got a decaf and a nitro coffee to go and one thing we noticed was that they had that same Rio Grande water flavor to them which was very unpleasant on the finish. The staff here was fantastic. We came here every day while on vacation and yes they were always busy but they were always friendly. Because it was a big family vaca our average drink order was 7-8 drinks. They never made faces or comments about the large order and I loved that they would read the order back to make sure they had it correct. I just had the worst Starbucks experience of my life in Port Isabel. They were busy so everyone would probably have understood slow wait times, but rudeness when you are paying a lot of money for coffee is inexcusable. We ordered an iced vanilla latte, an iced peppermint mocha, and a chocolate croissant and pumpkin loaf (warmed up). My daughter waited while I went to the bathroom. There was a line to the bathroom and when I finally got to the front, there was no toilet paper and it was filthy. When I came out, I waited for about ten minutes with my daughter. Then my vanilla latte came out. I asked about the peppermint mocha and they told me it had already come out. Someone else must have taken it and the barista just looked at me, like "too bad." I asked her to remake it and she made the wrong drink. I explained it was incorrect she told me I was wrong. Okay. So we waited a little more for our food. At this point we've been waiting for 25 minutes. I get back in line to ask about the food and when I finally get the the counter and start speaking, the barista rudely turns and started a conversation with another barista. When she turned back to me I asked about our food. She told me there were a lot of people and I'd have to wait. I asked if she could just make sure we were still in the queue. She glanced over and said yes. Then she just stared at me. I asked if we could just have them cold and she asked "what did you order"? Um, I thought you just checked?! I asked again about our drink, which we definitely knew was wrong now and asked if we'd just have to drink it and she said "yep." We are on vacation and I went to Starbucks because I know I can depend on it. I am so disappointed and, frankly, a little embarrassed. My dad and stepmom were waiting in the car for almost thirty minutes, the coffee I ordered for them was wrong, and the food was cold. More than that, the treatment we received was inexcusable. Great place to start the weekend off right, or so I thought. Pretty busy for the off season. The hostess told us 25-30 minutes, but it was only about 5. They have seats at the bar, tables, and booths. We ordered orange juice and coffee. They have regular coffee or cold brew, and you can also add flavoring to your coffee as well as whipped cream. The juice tasted a little bitter. It reminds me of the juice I used to drink in Korea. The flavored coffee is not worth the extra money. It's not free refills, so if you want another with the flavoring, you have to order another coffee. Regular coffee has free refills. I thought that was odd that the extra flavor is not refillable but, whatever. We put our order in at 9:20 and did not get our food until 9:50. The food was okay because who doesn't like breakfast food, but it was definitely not hot. We both ordered the Le Rooster, eggs over medium, bacon, and a waffle. The waffle was good. It had a hint of cinnamon which made it better. The bacon was okay. I should have asked for it extra crispy, but it was good if you like less crispy bacon. The hash browns were not good. They were cold and soggy. Would I go there again? Probably not. But positives were the service, the atmosphere, and of course, the company. ;) read more

Disaster. One word I would use to describe their customer service. One would assume that a location that is always going to have a high amount of traffic will require a decent amount of workers to deal with the demand, however they fail to grasp this concept and as a result we wait up to 30 minutes for a single drink. We regularly visit the Starbucks in Port Isabel. On our way to SPI. Today was the first time we experienced not just bad customer service, but rude and disrespectful customer service we proceeded to order drinks and I found a cup that was labeled 11.99 Along with three or four other of the exact same cup with the 1199 labels I took the cup up to purchase and when it was rung up it was 2495 so I asked the female if she could honor the sticker price she wasn't sure so I asked if she could ask her manager. The manager came over and said it was a previous promotion, and there was nothing they could do to change the price. Which seems reasonable it wasn't about being told that- it was the way I was told that. Then when we went up to get our refresher the cup bottom was blown out and couldn't sit up straight. I have a picture I asked for a new cup, and I was told that all the cups were like this. It was a manufacture defect OK so I proceeded to go sit down however, I was able to look up and see another drink the exact same one in a cup that was perfectly normal so I went back up and asked if they could please put my drink and another cup again and that same manager female, rudely replied it's a manufactures defect.
