    chicken and waffles
    Brian T.

I've been coming to Grapevine Cafe for years. Service has always been friendly, prices are reasonable, and it scratches the brunch itch when you're in the area. The problem is I keep forgetting why I stopped coming, and then I come back and remember. Twice now, two years apart, I've made the mistake of ordering the chicken and waffles. You'd think I'd learn. Both times the chicken was so overcooked it was practically jerky. Dry, tough, hard to chew. I don't know what's happening in that kitchen but the chicken needs significantly less time in whatever it's touching. Well-executed fried chicken should have a crust with some snap and meat that's still got moisture in it. This had neither. The wife and I split the banana french toast on the most recent visit hoping to salvage something from the meal. It was fine in the way that something sweet and warm is technically fine, but it was too sugary and didn't leave any impression worth describing. Forgettable. This is a place with decent bones. The staff is good. The prices won't offend you. But the kitchen is not delivering, at least not on what we've ordered, and I've now given it the same chance twice across two years. Writing this mostly as a note to myself: stop ordering the chicken and waffles. Or maybe just stop coming for a while until something changes.

We had a delightful breakfast at Grapevine Cafe during our stay in SPI. We were really only looking for coffee, but sat for breakfast anyway ... when in Rome! There is a separate entrance if coffee only is what you want! So glad we stayed... Jesse was our server, did a great job. A couple of lattes started us off (3 shots espresso/ 20 oz for me!), the coffee was delicious, and served HOT, as we like it! Our lunch was avocado toast and a shrimp omelette ... both were delicious! All ingredient were super fresh, served fresh! A very good breakfast, we'd definitely go back! Highly recommend!

I ordered a some drinks for the table (coffees, smoothies, and orange juice and a water) after being seated (no wait at all, the place was not busy). After 20 minutes I had received about half the drinks and had not seen a waitress at all. I eventually had to go track someone to get the check for the drinks I had received, having never gotten the rest of the drinks or a chance to order food. Again, the place was not busy, there was no wait to be seated, and I counted four waiters working 7 tables including ours. The waitress did, however, comp the three drinks we received.

We came for Labor Day weekend, this place was a 5 minute walk from our condo & it was great! The restaurant it pretty big in the inside. We got seated within the first 10 minutes, I suggest getting on the waitlist Ordered the chicken & waffles so good 10/10 My friend got avocado on toast 8/10 (egg became too runny, was hard to eat toward the end) Also got the Huevo a la Mexican with chorizo 9/10 (it was more chorizo based than pico de gallo) Can't wait to be back on the island and try this place again

I've been eating brunch here for the longest time and honestly it's probably the number one place that I love to eat breakfast while I'm on the island. It's so delicious and they have really great coffee.. The service is very good and the restaurants decorated really nicely. I had these huge tacos for breakfast.

The ambiance is a welcoming cafe with a modern vibe and the service is very friendly and accommodating. The food is very good, and worth a small wait for. This is the only brunch spot we have tried on the island but I think it would be hard to beat.

Didn't get any photos of our breakfast but the coffee. The food and staff was all wonderful. Everyone was kind and the food and coffee was delicious and came out hot. Portions were huge. My 3 year old had the kids pancake with scrambled eggs, my husband loved the crab cake Benedict with hash browns and I enjoyed the bananas foster pancakes and eggs. The coffee was hot and not too sweet!

I want to start by saying that the honey and I come here often. We've tried multiple items on the menu and we come all year round Food is always spot on, plenty served for each entree Service is pretty standard most days and some days it's definitely better. Ambiance is great if you come in on a slower day / time, some days, especially during spring break are chaotic, long waits and very busy Show up early, enjoy some good house coffee and a breakfast taco

Came in on a Saturday morning with a big group and it was packed! The wait time was 45 minutes to an hour so we didn't end up staying for brunch as planned- however the star of the show for me is the little mini togo cafe that they had inside. My latte was a 10/10

Food: so flavorful. I never had crab cake Benedict before and was pleasantly surprised by how much i enjoyed it. I also enjoyed the tropical padre smoothie, so refreshing for breakfast. Service: excellent. Waiter was attentive and welcoming. He had such a bubbly fun attitude. Ambiance: love the rustic, coastal vibe of this place. Definitely gives off the island vibe we were looking for, even the music was cool! I heard some Rebelution while in there!

Cute little cafe on SPI! It's bigger inside than it looks on the outside. The coffee was really good and there is an extensive coffee menu. Grabbed some breakfast and seated rather quickly and served quickly despite it being rather busy. The grit cakes were quite bland and we should have went with the servers recommendation to share biscuits and gravy. The shrimp omelette was excellent and the fruit cup has the tastiness melon I've ever had! The Benedict was similar to many others. Although the plating of the chilaquiles was lacking they were great and had a nice little kick with jalapeños. They even have a cool smoothie menu and we saw many folks popping in the to go area just to grab one and head to the beach. Pop on in to this lovely little spot on SPI if you're hankering for something tasty and easy.

Big cafe with a good variety of food items, dine-in seating, and a coffee bar at the back. We dropped by for a few drinks to go. Vibe: the restaurant is pretty big, with a good amount of seating inside. Pretty casual, clean, and mom-and-pop kinda vibe. We went straight to the drink bar at the back. Service: Servers here were not very attentive. We had questions about some of the menu items, and an employee (maybe a manager?) responded by referring us to another employee behind the counter who was busy making stuff. Then, he proceeded to tell us that the syrup flavors available were "whatever you see behind the counter" which was not very visible. All in all, not very helpful, and he seemed to be a little visibly frustrated with the other employees - not sure who was at fault here, but it was kinda uncomfortable nonetheless. Drinks: We ordered the cucumber lime refresher, melange berry refresher, and iced Purple Haze tea latte. The refreshers were incredible, fruity, and definitely refreshing! We would recommend grabbing these if you are a big fan of the refreshers from Starbucks. The iced purple haze tea was not so great - skip it. Tasted very water, not really any flavor. It also takes a long time for them to prepare. We definitely recommend grabbing the refresher drinks here when you are visiting SPI as they are delicious and refreshing! This spot is Let's Eat Houston approved.

Good choice, down here for the winter. Had shrimp and grits. Definitely recommend. Had 5 big shrimp piece of sausage on the bottom with bacon bits. Price was right 24.18 with coffee. Good coffee, they have a lot of the foofoo coffees , I just had a cup of regular black coffee. The waitress kept it full. I kept my receipt for a 10% discount on my next visit. I paid cash, they up charge for cards, who doesn't anymore.

    Is it pet friendly?

They do have a few outside patio tables for dining with pets.

Do you guys accept Apple Pay?

Sorry, not yet. It is in process and thanks for asking because it reminds me to follow up!

Do you have any dairy free or vegetarian options?

For Breakfast we have many vegetarian but vegan options are limited to a couple of options. We have fresh berries with gluten free granola, coconut milk and yogurt(hold the yogurt). We have a loaded hash skillet where the protein and cheese can be…

Is this a pet friendly outdoors place for brunch? Will be traveling next weekend with my husband and we will also be bringing our 2 small dogs with us.

Yes, we are pet friendly with outdoor seating and accommodate indoors for service dogs.

I'd love to bring a large group (27) for a wedding brunch, but is it Pet friendly?

We have 3 outdoor tables that are shaded directly visible through the adjacent glass. We can accommodate with bowls for food and water as well. We are a small cafe that gets very busy. I hope I’ve answered your question.

The atmosphere was fantastic, especially with the ocean breeze coming through. We ordered the steamed mussels, the grilled red snapper sandwich, and the grilled red snapper entrée. Our favorite dish was the red snapper sandwich. It tasted fresh and had more of a homestyle feel rather than something overly polished from a professional kitchen, which we really appreciated. Honestly, everything tasted fresh, comforting, and well prepared. The service was also incredible throughout the night. The only slight issue we had was spotting a cockroach crawl from under one of the chairs when we pulled it out. However, considering the restaurant is basically right on the beach and outdoors, insects are somewhat expected, and it honestly didn't take away from the experience for us. Overall, great atmosphere, great food, and a really enjoyable dinner spot in South Padre.

It's not upscale, comfortably casual, pleasant enough for beach front dining à la fresco, but the quality of our food was frankly disappointing. Coconut shrimp cooked too long, grilled flounder definitely over cooked, dry and poorly seasoned. Trimming for baked potatoes comes on the side in little plastic containers. Really? Seafood Bisque was thick like a soft pudding and had a really funky taste. How can you screw up Spinach Dip? Overall, a very disappointing experience for a$120 tab. Service was ok, but I cannot recommend this spot for dinner. Please do better.

The rest of the experience was just OK... Cafe Karma is a coffee/breakfast/light lunch spot, serving coffee, teas, juices, soft drinks, and the like. Food consists of breakfast bakery (muffins, pastries) and cooked items, light snacks like quiche and croissants, and ice cream. We had lattes (per usual). Temp was great but the coffee itself was just OK, not the best. For food we had the turkey quiche and the omelette muffin. The quiche was bland, overcooked. The muffin was much better, and was definitely the better of the two selections. Staff were friendly, service was quick! With all the coffee shop options available in SPI, not sure we'd go back. This review is really only based on the overall experience since the coffee was good: Pros: 1. My coffee order. Vanilla latte- strong and not too sweet. The cup makes a cute photo moment (pictured) 2. The baristas who took my order & made my coffee, they were nice given the circumstances (see below) Cons: 1. There was a family with (no exaggeration) 10+ children ordering before us and it was chaotic the second we walked in. The place was already packed, so it was overwhelming to say the least. I have no issues with children, as they were just being children. It was the lack of social awareness, control, & organization from the parents. Ice cream/coffee orders were being shouted in all directions, orders being changed multiple times, etc. It took so long for us to even order...and then an additional wait because they had ordered so much. I know it's not the establishment's fault, I'm just being honest about my experience. Maybe there should be a limit on how many people are able to crowd the front since it's a small space? I felt bad for the workers, they did a great job keeping it cool and professional. 2. There was a group of "Christian" men who seemed like they had a long meeting. They were having a very loud and racist brain rot induced discussion about their views on how diversity and inclusion are ruining this country. I've seen comments like that online and always assumed it was bots...was flabbergasted to actually hear it in person that was frustrating. Again, not the establishment's fault. But as a person of color myself, including the baristas, it was just very uncomfortable and wild to experience. It seemed like they felt too comfortable being that bold in there and that's suspicious to me. I literally chose this shop to avoid another notoriously racist coffee shop with a politically aggressive owner on the island! 3. The bathroom was gross. I can only give this place 2 stars only for the coffee and service. The workers all did a fantastic job, seriously give them a raise! However, we left overstimulated and extremely annoyed. Not sure if I'll ever be back. Hey, at least the coffee was good.
