    Stillman Nature Center

I visited here with a friend who lives not too far from Stillman and was eager to check it out…read more The parking area is small, and the whole experience reminded me of a 'self-guided' type of thing. We did not see a single person working there despite many raptors in their enclosures. They all were listed as being injured and unable to survive if returned to nature, so kudos to Stillman for taking care of them! We hiked most of the trails on the map and enjoyed the hike. Some of the trails were less clear, and we assumed we were on the trail, but they are not always well-worn and obvious 'trails'. We made it out of course, but at times we may have wandered off trail and somehow re-connected and not even realizing we left the trail. We enjoyed the bird-blind on one of the ponds and saw some migratory ducks diving into the water. I can't remember what they were, but they are only here in the Spring and Fall. Very cool to see. The trails of this nature center take you through some degraded areas - lots of buckthorn all over and some tall mono-culture 'prairies' of invasive non-native grasses. Lots of phragmites in some areas. We did see a recent burn scar from a brush pile, so they are at least trying to control the non-native buckthorn! This nature center is not perfect, but I am very glad it is here! I recommend to any nature lover in the area check it out. Stillman is only open 2 days a week, but they have many programs on their schedule for nature hikes and bird-watching experiences. This is a nice little patch of nature!

I come here every year for raptor walk, which happens around the second Sunday in October and I can…read moresay it's one of the most incredible experiences with nature I've ever had. The volunteers bring raptors (birds of prey) out for people to have a close-up experience with and ask questions about them. Stillman Nature Center is about 80 acres located in South Barrington off of Penny Road. They offer multiple nature experiences from walks to education to birdwatching year round. It's run by volunteers and it's a great nonprofit. Everything is made from nature, whether it's the enclosures that the rehab birds live in to the seats which are made of stone out in the forest areas. you can't help but fall in love with nature in this beautiful setting. The volunteers are always willing to answer your questions and no question is foolish. They're so well educated and make you so much smarter when you leave Stillman. Check out the website at stillmannc.org Do not hesitate to come and bring the family. There's so much to see and appreciate there.
