I really hope the people who run Anderson Humane read this review because I want to plead with them to give up this insane philosophy of keeping every animal alive no matter what. We adopted our cat 11 years ago from Andersons. She had been born in the shelter and was never adopted (until we took her home). She has extreme anxiety and never socialized in all those 4 years with other cats, nor do I believe humans very much. When we saw here there, sleeping with her chin on her LITTER BOX (which of course cats do not like, to sleep next to their own waste), acting very afraid and skittish. My husband went to pick her up to put her in the carrier and they quickly hustled her away from him, I'm sure because they didn't want us to see her feral behavior. I know you think you're doing a good thing not euthanizing any animals, but let me tell you from what I've observed: there are many things in life worse than death, and living in torment for 4 years is one of them. In addition to this woefully inadequate first 4 years, our cat has developed lifelong Chronic Rhinitis from a virus she picked up in her institutional life. She is 15 now and for about 3 or 4 years she has not played at all from fatigue--I've had older cats that play until they're way older than that, so its not just age. Because of her early institutional life, she is semi-feral--she has NEVER sat on our laps, she is impossible to give medication to, she struggles so severely if she is held, I'm afraid she'll dislocate something. Because of this, the only treatment she can get for her Chronic Rhinitis is antibiotic shots, and they have stopped working. I wish you could hear her struggle to breathe every night through her stuffed up airways. I fear she is in a constant state of agitation and anxiety caused by her breathing difficulty. At the very least she is definitely not living her best life: she should be playing, sitting outside under her favorite bush to watch the birds, and visiting us while we watch a movie at night- none of which she does anymore. This all comes down to your decision that keeping all animals alive at all costs is the best decision. A painless and humane euthanasia is a millions times less cruel and barbaric than insisting that your religious and/or philosophical ideology trumps all other considerations. This cat has suffered a lot because of *you*. If you work at this place, please reconsider your outlook and ideology. Making an animal without a voice suffer for years is sadistic and weird, especially when euthanasia causes no pain or distress. Are you really doing this because its what's best for the animal? read more

We were quoted $700 to neuter our dog at our regular vet. We decided to check for other options and found Anderson Humane. The people were very nice and took great care of our baby. Everything went well and the cost was less than 1/2 of what it was at our vet. We want quality vet care but I felt like our vet was taking advantage of us pricing a neuter that high. I was very happy with the experience at Anderson and would recommend them. I would use them as my regular vet if they were closer to home. read more

Staff is extremely rude. We went to see the dogs and they told us we were not allowed to stare at the dogs for too long, as it will upset them. When, we were trying to read the information on them. Recommendation...get new staff, or learn how to treat your customers. I have gotten 3 dogs here before and unfortunately I don't plan on getting another anytime soon. The staff has so much to deal with and take care of possibly think about others and show some compassion. They reduce thousands of fog and cats and do selfless work to honor all life shame on you for writing bad reviews. How many lives have you saved! Anyway they are angels doing beautiful work and recently adopted precious Cosmos....they staff were all so kind and patient with me and thankful for that. I adopted my dog, Axel, from here Dec 2020. I recently inquired about fostering Petey (similar size, breed) to give me time to consider adopting him. I was told he hadn't been in the shelter long enough (almost 2 months) and that I'd have to shelter one from S. Elgin shelter as those dogs have been in the shelter longer. Two weeks later, Petey is still there. When I did adopt my dog, the experience was so off putting I stopped my monthly donation. I was told they move dogs often between shelters. This puts additional stress on dogs. Not very humane - ironic since they changed their name to "Anderson Humane". read more

I'm all about adopting from shelters, but be aware of the hidden fees! 6 months after we got our pets, we got a letter from the Dupage County Animal Services saying we had to pay $180 to "register" our two indoor cats. After not immediately paying, they threatened to a court date. After having lived in 5 states, DuPage County, Illinois is the only one that has charged a registration fee. That's on top of the adoption fee. Where is the incentive to adopt?! I think Anderson Humane Society is fine but both of my kittens had tapeworm. After speaking with a staff member, she said all of the cats she's adopted from the shelter have had tapeworm. Since this is so common, I think the in-house vet should add it to to their vaccination list before they're sent home. read more

Left with a completely broken heart and no kitten. We arrived and after sometime were shown a couple of kittens. We fell in love with one and were ready to adopt. Her name was Madeleine and she was 2 months and 19 days old. Once we made our decision, we told the staff... we were then told that because she isn't 3 months old (11 days shy) that we would have to take two. We have a cat at home that we rescued 2 years ago as an abandoned infant, and ate not ready for three cats. We asked the staff to double check and were quickly told no again. So we left. I took a friend of the family to look at a couple of dogs. I've worked in dog rescue for over 8 years, that's why she asked me for help. The one girl was so condescending. The girl at the reception desk was nice, but still treated us like we were ignorant, not our first rodeo. The first dog they couldn't get out of the cage, so we couldn't see her. The other one was so nervous she only wanted to escape the visiting room. When I went back and checked Petfinder, I realized they didn't even bring us the right dog! Neither dog was adoptable, why they were posted as available is beyond me. Both should be in foster homes. read more

It's been over 5 years since I've adopted Bear (initially named Alex, but Bear felt right for him), and I can honestly say, he's changed my life for the better. Yes, he pushes my water over in the middle of the night, scratches the rug, and occasionally meows at 5AM (thank god I'm a morning person). But I'd have it no other way. He's been with me through a bad break up, and several moves, and still has the biggest personality I've ever seen in an animal. There are moments when I seriously cannot understand how anyone could have given him up in the first place. Then I realize that the universe knew I needed him, and he was always meant to be in my life. If you're considering adopting, DO IT! 4 years ago I made a spontaneous visit to the shelter with really no intention to adopting a dog but to boost my mood. I really loved all of the energetic doggies and how you could tell they were treated with love and care. I also really loved that all of the poor shy, nervous, and timid little dogs felt safe too. When I adopted my dog (he was a dog they rescued from a kill shelter) I could tell he was very comfortable despite being skittish due to his past situation. I am so happy for all the people that have had a good experience with Anderson . I tried two adoptions there and both of them were just horrible . But the second one is the one that really breaks my heart . They gave me a sick cat who they said was not sick . They had her for over a month and let her suffer in a cage with infected gums and teeth it needed to be pulled . And she is a handicap cat and they had no idea and they had her for over a month . So she was really sick since I got her and I ran out of money from taking her to the vet. And when she got sick again they made me give her up to them and they would not let me have her back I saw a story where the family got their animal back well I didn't . And when I asked the CEO who called me because I was so angry he said well how are we supposed to know it's a cat sick or not . So that tells me all the people who are very happy with their adoptions got lucky that they didn't get a sick cat because that's happened a lot too . I think they're making this cat suffer a second time because they're angry at me for being angry at them for neglecting the animal that I adopted from them . I even offered to Foster her until somebody else who can afford her consistent medical bills adopts her. But Anderson Humane would rather keep her in a cage again than have her in a home because they don't like that I'm angry with them and said some not so nice things to them they'd rather let the animals suffer which proves that what I said is correct ! read more

We got an email from Anderson's saying they could take our rabbit we found in our yard, and we live 30 minutes away so this rabbit had to suffer an hour of car rides, since the turned him down saying that they never sent the email, which is ridiculous! The managers and staff were really rude, and we went to go pet the cats and we got yelled for putting our hands in the condo, which I have been able to do before. We arrived almost 3 hours before the event time for a specific dog that was only available at the event, no sooner. We were first in line for the dog. When it was 11:00 we told the shelter the dog we were here for only to be told that moment the dog "was spoken for" and adopted. Exact wording. We were first! How is that possible? What's stranger is the dog was there. If it's been "spoken" for and adopted....why is it even there? Regardless of scam type of situation it was, to sit there for almost 3 hours being first in line for the dog to be told, the moment the event start of the dog is no longer available is unacceptable, especially when your first, so who took the dog? Why would an organization allow a foster family or "whoever" to decide minutes before the event starts that it's theirs. Lots of underhanded things that went on. Beware of this place! The way this has been handled has put such a terrible taste in my mouth, my daughter has been crying as we told her the dog was ours when we saw we were first for her. Needless to say this will be our last experience ever coming here. BEST of all, did they try to make it right? No. It was just said "It's been spoken for". Who says that? Don't think that if your first and told you get first pick, it's yours, apparently this type of organization does things and "favors" for others on the inside. I would recommend looking closer into your policies and foster families to ensure this type of situation should NEVER arise to another hopeful family. Heartbreaking. Shameful. read more

You can't find a better animal shelter than Anderson's. Besides, being so clean, their staff really works with you to find the right match in your search for a fur baby. They are very honest with you about each animal, they don't just tell you what they think you want to hear. We adopted Archer (Ike) at the end of March when he was just shy of 6 months old. He's 13 months now and 20 pounds taller. He's a lot of fun. Anderson's follows up with the adoptions to make sure everything is going well. I moved to Arizona eight years ago, but prior to that I volunteered at Anderson. I'm saddened to think that things may have changed in a negative way. Maybe they've taken on too much with all the new shelters. All I know is volunteering at Anderson was a wonderful experience. Most of the volunteers were very caring and went out of their way to try to match animals and adopters. One Easter I offered to go there to help feed the cats so others who had family plans were free. Well, alot of the volunteers thought the same thing, alot of us showed up and one woman, after hosting her family for dinner, brought a table and all the leftover food and served us an Easter dinner. That was the kind of people we were. We did get new management who I thought was great, but there was now more emphasize on what books said to do that don't necessarily work. When we objected we could be out the door. Anyway, please don't give up on Anderson. I can't find a shelter to volunteer at in Phoenix that compares to them. If as a possible adopter you don't agree with something ask them why they're doing it a certain way. I often did this and when things were clarified to me then everything made sense. Moving dogs among the different shelters may seem unkind, but on the other hand they're then exposed to more possible adopters and each shelter has the same amount of animals, versus one maybe having too many or not enough. Usually the people who are there alot know the animals and what works for them. I am very sad that I keep reading that volunteers are being rude. There's no excuse for it. I always considered my job to be a journey of matching people and animals so all were happy. And to the man who was told he had to pay a registration fee I'm wondering if that was a scam. Ok let me start with do not go in there if you are not ready to fall in love with a animal and want to bring him/her home. I went to see if there might be a special dog/puppy to join my family. As I walked to each kennel looking into their eyes my first response is heart ache I read each of their cards about breed, temperament and story if they have one. How I wish I could have them all but know I need to find just the right one with a home that already has 3 other fur babies (2 are cats) I spend about 30 minutes going back and forth watching, petting, re-reading. One little 5 month old just kept drawing me back. Ok time to get a space to get to know her in. On the floor with her her scared a little but so wanting to be loved. Perfect for my family and I know will fit in with my other fur babies. She's the one. The women working up front were so kind and helpful. I was not very familiar with the breeds as my other dog is a German Shepard. They told me about her and how she will be for another dog in my home with my grand babies and other fur babies. A little paper work and payment and she is coming home with me. The shelter was clean and the dogs well cared for. Staff was friendly and willing to answer any questions. My girl was called Tiny there but she has a new beautiful name Mila and day one she has already fit in to the family. Great shelter to adopt from, volunteer or donate to. read more

I have adopted two dogs from Anderson in the last 16 years.the first was Elmer, a 17 lb terrier mix that no one wanted because he was a senior. Being a senior myself, I thought we would make a good fit. He brought me joy, laughter and he was my best buddy for 10 years! He passed way from congestive heart failure at about 17 years old. Sometimes when we were snuggled together, I would reflect on what a darling others had passed over because he was a senior, but Anderson stood by him, waiting for the owner he deserved to walk through the door one day. when it was time to adopt again, I adopted Willa, who was 5 and a victim of a puppy mill. I changed her name to Adara Fiona (meaning Noble White), and I have had her for 6 years. She is completely deaf, and blind in one eye, weighed in at 7 lbs, and again,Anderson stood by her, had her with a foster Mom until she found her forever home. She is full of fun, loves to snuggle up at the end of each day, and I can't imagine life without her. Anderson is wonderful, and it saddens me to think that their decision to euthanize one dog that could not be rehabilitated has tarnished their reputation in any way. I know that it must have been an agonizing decision for them. I wish the best for all who are caring for animals that others have thrown away. Keep up the good work! read more

This is really the place to go if you want to adopt a new fur baby! My husband and I went there today to meet mr feeny (but also expected to take him today) (which we did)! They are the cleanest adoption shelter we've ever been to! The staff is SO BEYOND friendly and knowledgeable, it made us happy to walk in there! Not only when you walk in do you see the cutest little kittens but you get greeted with such warmness from the staff! Andy (the behavioral professional) was absolutely the best! adopted a puppy Tuesday. by Thursday he was sick. when I adopted him I was told that if he got sick and I believed it was something that came from their rescue, they would cover the vet costs at one of their participating vets. called and the girl was rude, told her he was sick and all she said was "ok". when I brought up that I was told they would cover the cost, she said "I cannot guarantee that we will cover the costs since we are non for profit." I had to force out of her that they have had recent confirmed cases of kennel cough. Now all 3 of my dogs are sick, because I had my puppy integrated with my other dogs since I was not made aware that they had recent cases of a SEVERELY contagious illness. what a negligent rescue!!!!! read more

We have been heartbroken, and feel mislead by Anderson Shelter staff. We adopted a dog with some known issues (paperwork labelled as 'violent', due to one adoptive family bite incident). But with us, direct behaviors of the dog seemed only high energy. Was described by shelter staff as 'good with people, and most dogs'. Nothing could be further from the truth. Over 8 months of trying to improve his socialization skills, he remained extremely defensive, and territorial. He had been incapable of being taken on neighborhood walks without scaring other dogs, and neighbors. Our initial meeting, and adoptive process seemed to be targeted at preventing us from seeing these same aggressive, anti-social behaviors. And now, after a very short time (~12 days) back in the shelter after surrender, we see that he is back up for adoption. We are heartbroken that we had to give him up for professional reeducation, and then again heartbroken that another family may have the exact same experience. There is no way that his behavior is improved in this short time. Be on your guard when considering a dog from here! read more

I loved my new dog and that is why more than $ 1,600 dollars was spent trying to save my new dog's life. In addition to the $ 475 dollars adoption / purchase price. And Anderson animal shelter refused to do anything to rectify this matter. My dog is deeply missed. Extremely disappointed with this shelter. If I could give zero stars, I would. My boyfriend and I were looking for a kitten, so we came here because we had heard amazing things. The workers were okay for the most part and let us hold whichever kittens we wanted. We were about to leave as they were closing and I saw people come from the back with multiple cat carriers to bring back kittens from getting neutered/spayed. That's when I saw her; the kitten of my dreams. She was adorable, long haired, and calm (granted she was pretty doped up from her surgery). We put down a deposit and picked her up the next day. According to her records, she was good to go (updated on vaccines, spayed, shots, and was treated for fleas). They quoted her about 3 months of age. She was found in a window well and brought in by somebody--she had no brothers or sisters there. When we got her home, she was not the way I know kittens to be. She was not eating, drinking, or playing. All she wanted to do was sleep. I accredited this to her acclamation to a new environment, new people, new everything. I took her into the vet, where they were surprised she was quoted to be 3 months and said she was more about 2 months. With that being said, that's way too young to spay a kitten and on top of it she was barely a pound in weight. After a week from hell we found out she had horrible horrible tapeworms, was malnourished, dehydrated, and very sick. Over the course of her first week with us we went to the vet countless times and went to Blue Pearl late one night because she would not stop throwing up. Eventually, I admitted her to the vet hospital where they could care for her for a couple of days and bring her back up to being a normal, healthy kitten. I missed work and school to care for this poor kitten. Over $2,000 later and a very stressful 4 weeks, she is a healthy, normal kitten. I am disappointed that Anderson would release a kitten that sick to be adopted when they have a vet on staff. That is very negligent on their part. I hate to bash a shelter, because I'm such an advocate for saving animals, but this place is not caring for their animals. She shouldn't have even been spayed that small and young. We tried contacting them and were basically told, "too bad so sad" or "we'll have our manager get back to you" and getting nothing. Unprofessional, negligent, and just plain sad. I'm happy my kitten, Millie, got adopted to people who were willing to care for her properly. read more

We were matched with a sweet young dog that seemed to do great during our visits. We asked to walk them on a leash but were denied that opportunity as they rattled off excuses as to why they couldn't accommodate a short test walk on a leash. We should have either insisted on a supervised walk or left right then. We explained our family, lifestyle, needs, house, and goals in full detail before adoption and made sure to ask about needs, behavior, reactivity, and prey drive and were told over the hours of visits that they were no red flags. We brought our new dog home only to find that they were not nearly as child friendly as they described and they were extremely reactive and aggressive when on walks and regarding food. We saw red flags and communicated them immediately and began to worry for our child's safety. We tried to be patient and knew he needed time for adjustment and maturity but we ultimately had to return our new pet due to them quickly becoming agitated by our neighbor's pets and by my child who was respectful of the new dog's space and feelings. We were more than willing to hire a trainer and accommodate the dog's athletic and emotional needs but quickly saw that he needed a different home with a big fenced in yard with plenty of space from other animals and no small children in order to be happy and safe. We have all cried as a family and it has broken our hearts. On his return to the shelter this strong 6 MONTH OLD dog tried to attack a large pitbull which seemed to shock the staff. A volunteer almost lost control of the pitbull and this proved that we were making the right choice. They said they would reevaluate his needs and help him but I now see that NOT EVEN 24 HOURS AFTER HIS RETURN they have reposted his profile with the same description of being good on a leash and family friendly. He's not a "bad" dog and we miss him dearly but the actions of the shelter seem reckless. I understand that they might be overwhelmed with animals but there is NO WAY that this dog is ready to go to a family after the experiences he just had over several days. We are not naive or ignorant dog owners and have the utmost respect and compassion for animals but the shelter's wording and decision making seems very unsafe and this could have tragic consequences if he is not placed with the right owner and given special help. Think twice before adopting here and do not trust them!!!! read more

My boyfriend and I decided to adopt two kittens from Anderson's. And yes I understand they are helping pets in need however cats should not be kept in cages! Anyways well we fell in love with two kittens. Olga and Elijah well long story short we took them to the vet cuz one of them had some form of pink eye which we knew about however we did not know they also had Ringworm. and horrible yeast infections in their ears and of course an awful chest infection! We called Anderson and of course they can't help us with any medical so all total 440.00 to treat them not including the 170.00 to adopt. We found 3 cats outside that my parents saved and not one even had a flea! This is really upsetting. I will never buy an animal from an shelter again. read more

My sister and I went to the South Elgin location with hopes of adopting two kittens, as our family's older cat recently passed away and we were looking for a new addition(s). They started by giving us a questionnaire about what our cat's life would be like at home and they had three options for if it would be inside or outside so I selected "indoor/outdoor", because that is what we have always done with our cats. When I handed them my paper back, the woman at the front desk whispered to the girl next to her and then the second girl explained that they don't adopt cats out to people who let their cats outside as "inside is the safest place". They then proceeded to tell me my cats would "definitely die" if they allowed us to adopt them. THEN they showed us these feral cats that they thought would be better outdoor cats. I explained that, yes, we live on a farm, but we are not looking for farm cats. We're looking for house cats that sometimes go outside and catch a mouse. Long story short: If you would like your cat to see the light of day, don't tell Anderson Animal Shelter. read more

Wow, I wish I could say something "pawsitive" about my experience with this shelter, but I can't. It's sad because they are there to provide a safe place and find good homes for animals. My story is not something that I am excited to share because it hurts deeply. I adopted a beautiful, fun loving kitten in August. He is a great cat... energetic, social, loves dogs (he had 3 older dog brothers who were much bigger than him and he owned them), loves toys, knows his name, and he's an all around fun loving little guy. He has such a personality. Well, my husband was diagnosed with Parkinson's a short time ago. Kitty, with all of his kitty-like energy, caused some falls because of his excitement and his playfulness. Unfortunately with that disease, control can be out of the question. So, for the safety of my husband, we decided that it was best that we try to find kitty a new home, as much as it hurt. He was family. We did some research and found that this place was humane and had good reviews. We were hopeful. We made an appointment and they said they would take him- no problem, no questions asked, and then we drove the 1.5 hours to get there. Upon arrival, we were ignored, because he was a surrender. We were then instructed to fill out paperwork, and we provided all of his original paperwork. Here is when things get terrible. When asked why he was being surrendered, my mother-in-law spoke up and told them our story. My husband was too upset. They were extremely rude. A certain individual said to us "well why did you even get him in the first place?" How rude. How were we to know this would happen? All we wanted to do was provide this handsome little guy a loving "furever" home, and when we couldn't, we wanted to make sure that we would find a place that could find one for him. They made a terrible experience even worse. Then, they called me a liar when I provided them with all of the paperwork I originally had for him, including vaccinations. The paperwork was right in front of them. Signed and dated. Why would I lie about something like this? I had zero intention to ever give him up. At this point everyone was in tears. Then they told us they wouldn't take him. So here we are stuck in a terrible situation. I called numerous times to talk to management, but they refused to return calls (I would never make a negative review without trying to resolve the issue with management first). I would hope that people would be understanding when someone is visibly upset about having to give a pet up because of a certain disease. It's disgusting the way we were treated. No one wants to give up a perfect pet. There are people out there who would not do anything or take them to a shelter that kills. Not me. I'm concerned about his well being because I love him. I'm also concerned about my husband. It's not fair to have to choose. It was a terrible decision because my husband and my kids loved him dearly too. Life isn't fair sometimes and not easy. We have to do what we have to do even if it's painful. It's sad that the staff here was not understanding at all. They are supposed to be there to help. Not hurt. I understand that some people would just go to drop off a pet for no reason, or for stupid reasons. Not us. We didn't want to, we had to. It was a matter of safety. No one wants to lose a part of their family. Kitty was graciously accepted at another shelter who assured us he would most definitely have a home in a few days. They understood the situation and knew we were not happy about the decision. They even offered to call when he found a home. I could tell that he would be taken care of while in their care. So thank you to that business, and a big screw-you to Anderson. I hope the animals are treated better than the humans. read more

They take such great care of my kitties! They Spade kitty and took such good care of her. I highly recommend this vet!!!

I went in for my puppy to get spayed. I am amazed and impressed to see how nice, helpful, and patient the stafff (volunteers) were. You can tell the staff there is passionate/caring to those animals. They put long hours of a day/week to have the animal in trust at heart. I have two pups and not planning on getting another. But Ive been back to donate foods/$/clothes/collars/leashes. And if i can put hours I will. For the love of those animals. Keep up the good work guys! read more

I adopted my puppy from one of the adoption centers when she was about 3 months old. Tiniest, sweetest thing ever. My issue with this place is while I know it's their policy to adopt out spayed and neutered animals, I found out my puppy was spayed when she was under 2 months old. We could not figure out why she wouldn't even get up to go to the bathroom (would lay in her own waste) and our vet said that it's a result of getting spayed way too young and those muscles didn't have time to develop. I love my dog and wouldn't dream of returning her, especially for an issue that's not her fault, but it would've been nice had Anderson explained that there are potential complications when an animal is fixed at such a young age. I also found out that they were using frontline for dogs on the cats they have, just in a lower dose. Makes you question the quality of veterinary care they actually get here. Point is - if you adopt from Anderson...get a copy of the medical records and take them and your new friend to your vet ASAP and ask them to be very thorough. read more
