This shop is an absolute gem. I've been all over Texas and many other states and I always visit the yarn shops while traveling. This one, I go to when I'm NOT traveling. It's about three hours from my house, so it's quite a trek, but so worth it. Ginger and her staff are absolutely amazing, and the yarn selection is two thumbs up. She's got what you need, and the knowledge to make substitutions if it's not an exact match. She's got fabric and other crafts covered on the right hand side of the shop but I'm afraid to venture over to that side because picking up another hobby might collapse my house; it's already full of yarn. The prices are perfectly on par with everyone else, and I totally recommend that you swing by if you're in the neighborhood and want to knit or crochet with new friends you haven't met yet. Or do what I do and drive up and spend the night! There are tons of hotels and excellent restaurants in the area. read more

Wow! This is an absolutely amazing place for both knitters and quilters. I went to the shop for knitting last week. I did not have a project in hand, but knew what I wanted. The shopgirl who helped me was experienced, knowledgeable, and patient with me. She helped me find the project, which wasn't easy (because of me). She also helped me getting everything I needed. The yarn selection is one of the best I've ever seen. They also have all of the accessories you need to finish your project. I live in CO, but if I lived in McKinney I'd be there all of the time. My favorite local yarn and craft store! Love the owner, Ginger, and her fantastic staff. It's more of a homecoming, visiting with family than shopping. It is always such a joy for me to visit and shop at the McKinney Knittery. There is a fantastic variety of yarn and notions, fabric, thread, books, and related items for a variety of budgets and needs. I feel like a kid in a candy store since I absolutely love to knit, crochet, and sew, embroidery, and anything related to those crafts. Ginger is so attentive and personable and is an absolute joy. Her store is one that I would spend gobs of money at if we had "funny money." But, even though I don't have unlimited funds, I am still able to shop and not break the bank when I'm looking for specific supplies for my projects. Visited on a whim. The selection is phenomenal!! The staff is incredibly knowledgeable and they gave great advice. They helped me choose multiple skeins of the most suitable and beautiful yarn for my multiple projects. There were too many to choose from. The staff wound my skeins into cakes for free while they recommended a great place for lunch and things to see. There is a large selection of tools and it appears that classes are available, too. Recently, a friend of mine and I decided to learn how to knit. Living in McKinney, I was excited that there was a shop near by. My friend and I dropped in last Saturday. The shop is quite cozy and inviting with chairs, sofas, and a big table in the back, where women were sitting around knitting away. Melissa, a lady who works there, came up and asked how she could assist. They have beginner's kits, with a ball of yarn, needles, and someone has already started it for you to make it easier. You learn the casting on later. Melissa sat down with us and proceeded to patiently show us how to knit! She was so kind and helpful. Now, my friend and I are both hooked! They have a beginner's class coming up, but want to make sure that you know the basics first. We can't wait! read more

I'd describe myself as "an intermediate" knitter : ) I recently found a stocking pattern on the internet that I wanted to make for a family member. As it turned out, the pattern was missing a few key parts of the instructions; I was lost! After buying my supplies for the project at the shop, I spent several hours over two different days getting help with the stocking. The staff at the Knittery, especially the kind and patient owner, were so very helpful. I truly can't say enough good things about this store. While it is easily 30 minutes from my home, it is my go-to place for all things yarn and knitting now. They have stuff for quilting as well. I'd have to move in if I ever took that up! Ginger, I promise to avoid that one. And I finished the stocking yesterday! With only a few booboos (or kisses) as I call them.
