Unfortunately, when yelp ask you to make a rating, it gives you between one and five stars. It should give you an option of zero or even negative stars because that's what the store deserves. The owner, whose name escapes me, was one of the most rude business owners I've ever come across. In a typical normal Ace Hardware store the employees greet you upon entering the store and offer to help you find what you're looking for. This staff offered no greeting or no assistance whatsoever. I can certainly see that they were trained by their owner who has the personality of a rock. Maybe instead of selling hardware they should sell rocks. If you are looking for a store for any of your needs, I would bypass South End Ace and shop at target, Walmart, tractor supply, or Fred Meyer. I love this store. It's within a few miles of home, and I like supporting locally owned shops. I will always prefer to go here rather than the big box home improvement store that's also within a few miles. I was so glad when they finally reopened after their roof fell in on them. I had a bench style shower chair that needed some modifications, and Bob was so helpful. Within a few minutes, we had a plan figured out, and after I got home, I implemented the plan, and it works perfectly! There's a big box store closer but it is still faster and more convenient to shop here. The first time I went there, a friendly employee helped me find what I was looking for and explained how to use it. In under 5 minutes was checked and back on the road. No waiting for help and no waiting to check out! I have shopped there over a hundred times and there is always a friendly face available if I have a question. They have experienced staff that can help you with your project. Plants are from local nurseries so they seem to last longer than what I've purchased at Walmart or Home Depot. I searched for a certain length of a screw for two weeks. I was about to give up but I came here and a gentleman who actually knew about hardware helped me find the right one! I was over the moon with joy! Totally made my day! This is going to sound bizarre but the cashier actually acknowledged my presence and greeted me upon entering the store! Hands down the best customer service around! Not only do they help the customer, but if they can't find the item, or don't have it in stock, they'll offer to order it for you! Though large chain stores may have items a couple dollars cheaper, the customer service is never there -this is why we always use this hardware store whenever we need anything for the house or farm! read more

I use South End Hardware when I don't really feel like driving to Home Depot or I just need something small. Plan on spending a little bit more, than if you went to one of the big box stores. But consider your time and the cost of fuel, if SEH is closer. I've been disappointed with their customer service on a couple of occasions and ban myself from going in there. But ultimately, I always return. It's nice having a mom and pop hardware store close to home. read more

This place is the kind of hardware store that is becoming an endangered species in America and it's a dang shame because it is so handy and the people are very friendly and helpful. They have stuff stacked clear to the ceiling just like a hardware store is supposed to and they know where every little thing is hidden! I especially like their fastener dept. They have the oddball nuts and bolts that you just can't find anywhere else. Sometimes I just wander through the aisles and get ideas for projects as I look at all the different googaws and thingamajigs. Strategizing, I call it! This place is great! It has a small-town friendly feel to it. The people working here are actually knowledgeable about the hardware they sell and they are happy to help you find what you need. Good luck getting any help at Home Depot or Lowes. Yes, they don't have as big of an inventory here as the warehouse stores, but at South End I don't have to hunt all over the store to find someone to help me. I visited this location for a couple items on my winterization list and from the time I came in the store the employee approached me and asked if I needed help with anything, I didn't yet... then he asked me if I could zip up my purse which I did, to avoid any confusion of theft. I was kind of affened but not to bad. because this area did seem kind of shady. Then I continued to look for my items I was in need of and was helped by the employees which were vary knowledgable. I Evan stopped and watched a demo video they had in the store. I had not chosen any items to purchase yet. I did not buy anything because my husband called me and asked me to wait till he was around to buy the items we needed. I thanked the employees and walked out to my car, when a man follows me out and tells me that I always come to his location and never buy anything, mind you I have NEVER been there before in my life. I proceeded to explain to him I was new to this town so he was mistaken, and how offended I was by his comments. I will never come back to this store.
