7/29/2023 I called for inspection and flush of our Bradford White 24 year old hot water heater, left a message. That afternoon I received a call from owner Sean who asked questions about the heater and turning on and off water outdoors. Said I wanted a professional to do the flush. He came next am (Sat. ) at appointed time and performed the flush and inspection. He also gave me good information about the heater because of its age, but assured me it is a good brand and is performing well. My wife and I decided to replace our old (ca 1986) water heater before anything bad happened, and decided to call McMahon's plumbing. We had Sean replace our kitchen faucet some time ago and were happy with that work, so we called him again. Sean gave us an approximate estimate, which seemed reasonable to me, so we scheduled the replacement. Sean and his helper Luke showed up on time and got right to work. Being a 40 year old installation, there were a couple of minor hiccups along the way, but they blew through those difficulties and got the job done on time. My wife and I have been a continuing customer of Sean's for over 10 years. For starters, I endorse every review I see posted here on this Sat. Feb. 20, 2021, everyone of which is unsurprisingly positive. In particular, be sure to read the reviews of MhC, DaveL, Bill G, Nacny D, David W, Jeanett W, and Joyce Y. Because of a decade of experience working with Sean, I can say without reservation or hesitation his work during several phases of remodeling our 3-story cabin in the high Sierras (gutting each floor back to studs; floors removed, etc.), plus his on-going coaching and oversight and fixes here and there has earned him the highest possible score as a long-term track record for performance and value. Hard to believe: he's never made a mistake. He's never failed to solve a problem. He's never "not cared." He's done MAJOR work for us and little mundane jobs too, plus coached me over the phone to solve some issues within 90 seconds! This has been critical for us, as we use our cabin part-time, so we're not there all the time during winter. So, why did we first start using Sean? We went through 2 other plumbers beforehand. The first one had a drinking problem and thanks to 4 years of shop courses way back in high school I could see his soldering jobs were mediocre. Then, under our first general contractor we gutted the top floor and moved the location of the bathroom, which required opening up the entire ceiling to all exposed pipes in our master bathroom immediately below, which the contractor's plumber re-piped completely. But he was not reliable. Chris Barrett of Barrett Builders (who I highly recommend), who became our next and "permanent" go-to general contractor, recommended Sean. So Sean arrives, walks into our master bathroom, stands there looking up at all the new exposed piping and starts pointing and counting "There's one, there's another, that's a 3rd one, and there's a 4th. Yea, you have 4 traps, see? The water cannot drain, so each one of these will have water left in these sections and when it freezes the pipes will burst." The second plumber was from the Bay Area and had not thought about the snow OR THE CODE, that of course requires a specific angle of decline of all pipes so they can be fully drained and that prohibits the very faulty "traps" (acting like traps under your sink) the 2nd plumber had installed. Then Sean tells me that the whole thing is wrong and the guy even violated the code and common sense about where the main sewage outflow pipe was from the new toilet upstairs and how it was not properly vented! And then he tells me I would have to rip up the brand new porcelain floor upstairs and relocate the toilet or replace and move the main sewage pipe that was running up through new finished walls upstairs. I thought I was going to have a heart attack after spending thousands and thousands of dollars already. There he was, our "new" plumber, telling me we had to gut much of which we'd just rebuilt upstairs. Like, "Who IS this guy?" But he stood there thinking. Then he asks "What county are you in?" (We are almost on the line between Placer and Nevada counties.) When I told him Nevada, he told me I'm in luck, for Nevada County (unlike Placer) allows the use of a special vent/valve (can't recall the name of it) that would be easy to install in the master bathroom and would completely eliminate the need to re-do the entire bathroom plumbing upstairs and wreck our new floor! All he'd have to do is re-pipe all the ceiling pipes in our master bathroom! His knowledge of the differing codes of two counties pertaining to a rather arcane and not common piece of plumbing impressed me (and Chris Barrett who himself is an expert contractor, which is why he uses Sean too). That same second plumber was supposed to have installed and hooked up our two new big electric water heaters to have the capability to shut down either of them to use the remaining one in case one of them went out. In walking around the rest of the cabin at my request, Sean observed the waer heSo Sean rebuilt the whole quite complex labyrinth of pipes and valves so we can bypass either tank in the even of a problem with either. In short, you're talking about a real professional plumber here, who has saved us far more than we have ever invested in him. That's true value. And that stems from a couple of things: the guy is smart! He thinks before he opens his mouth. He's "people smart" too. He's totally customer-centric. He defines great service and the term "rapid response." He is not "transactional" -- he's focused on establishing a good long term business relationship for repeat business. Totally honest. Completely fair and practical. He will not try and "oversell you". And he's a nice guy with a good sense of humor. There's only one problem: some day he's going to retire. read more

My kitchen sink up because of the garbage disposal & would not drain. Sean called me back within 10 minutes. He wasn't able to come out, but had me take photos & text them to him. He said it was not a complicated repair & was going to "walk me through it". However, I decided it was alittle too complicated for me. He then told me to try to unplug the disposal with a toilet plunger & it worked! He really cares about his business and customer service. He is very knowledgeable and has reasonable prices. He explains what needs to be done and how he is going to do it. Over the past 2 years he has replaced our garbage disposal, kitchen sink faucet, one of our toilets with a low flush toilet, replaced the insides of another toilet tank, upgraded the toilet water connection hardware, replaced the hot and cold water connections to our kitchen sink, replaced the hot and cold water connections for our washing machine, and replaced the washing machine hoses. The last job he did for us was the washing machine. The hot water turn on/off faucet handle was leaking. The cold water faucet handle was frozen. I called him in the morning, sent him photos of the faucet handles. He ended up replacing the faucet handles and was able to do it the same day I called him. His price was very reasonable. I would definitely recommend using McMahons Plumbing and plan to continue using McMahons to fix any future plumbing issues. Upon arrival at our cabin in Tahoe Donner for 4th of July, we saw that our expansion tank on our water heater was leaking with water all over the garage. I contacted McMahon's Plumbing and received a prompt callback. Sean asked that I send pictures by text and after receiving them he promptly called me back and said he would be out later that morning. Sean came and replaced the expansion tank and a faulty pressure release valve on the water heater. Sean was responsive, professional, and friendly. I was in need of a new toilet and called a few plumbers. The first to call me back was Sean McMahon and he came by the same day. He suggested I buy the toilet myself thereby saving me money. Since the plumbing supply company delivered the toilet for free, it was easy and fast. They were very familiar with Sean and knew exactly what he would recommend. The toilet arrived the next day and Sean came by between larger jobs to install the toilet. I tend to evaluate service people by how well they clean up and how well they care for their equipment. For such a dirty job, I expected my bathroom to need a major cleaning. Not so, Sean is a perfectionist and wait until you see his truck. Spotless. Sean McMahon did a great job to replace and install a new toilet. Using a picture of the old hardware, Sean knew what needed replacing and fully explained the scope of the job before any commitments. He came on time as promised and arranged to have a trusted helper stop by to help carry the heavier new toilet upstairs saving some time/cost. Sean's work was clean, neat, knowledgeable, and he was nice to work with. One way of connecting the water risked opening up the wall for pipe soldering, potentially costing more. Sean instead used a fitting that avoided any soldering. Overnight I found a very slow leak on that connection. Sean came out the day after I texted him, fixed that leak, and didn't charge more. I wanted to make sure to post a great review for Sean, of McMahon Plumbing. I had a leak that I first noticed in the basement, and eventually figured out it was coming from a toilet two stories up. We identified where the leaking pipe was, and Sean did a fantastic job getting to it (it was in a tricky location) and fixing it up. It is obvious Sean understands not just plumbing, but also construction. And that is important when you are trying to identify the source of leaks and might need to cut into your walls! He is super detailed, explained everything to me, and you can just tell he's very smart and experienced when it comes to plumbing. He's also really nice and easy to discuss things with, even if you haven't a clue about plumbing. I left messages for 3 plumbers on the weekend that I called Sean....and he was the only one to call back (within an hour)! He didn't even charge extra for a weekend visit and his bill was less than what I had thought it would be - How often does that happen, I ask? (NEVER!!) By the way, I have to add this: in the couple of months before calling Sean, I tried at least 5 other plumbers -- including ALL the top rated ones that I found here on Yelp in the Truckee vicinity. I guess I called them before calling Sean because they had a larger number of reviews. I wasted a ton of time, and it was very frustrating because none of them gave me much confidence. Although many were quite nice, ultimately I really felt they wasted my time and thank goodness I didn't hire them to do the work. E.g: a couple of these other 4-5 star Yelp reviewed plumbers never returned calls. Another one showed up after I had waited all afternoon, looked around a bit, but then told me he couldn't "do any work for me that day because he had been working all day and was tired." (That floored me!). Another wanted to rent an expensive camera system and look for the leak that way (NOT a good way to find a small leak). Another seemed mostly interested in having me sign up as a regular client for his "vacation home management services." Another warned me "he would have to make a mess" and wanted to put holes in all sorts of walls (including my living room and stairwell) to find the leaking pipe. I understand that findings pipes is a bit of guesswork, but if you are knowledgeable and take time to figure things out, you can make intelligent guesses. This other plumber gave me zero confidence that he understood how plumbing was contructed and where the pipes were likely to be! (The leaking pipe was eventually found NOWHERE near where he wanted to start cutting holes, so I was right about that). Anyway, my point is that I wasted a ton of time meeting with a LOT of other plumbers who have great reviews on Yelp. I am so relieved and happy I finally found McMahon Plumbing. Sean is definitely the guy and the others are NOT! I hope I do not ever have another plumbing issue at my house. But if I do, I'm not even going to worry about it because I can just call Sean and feel 100% confident it will be fixed super quick, with high quality work, and for a very reasonable price. We discovered a broken valve on the outside of our cabin that had been leaking for some time. We called Sean. He is a lifetime resident of Truckee. I have to write a review because Sean McMahon, really is honorable and extremely knowledgeable. My wife and I are close to having a mother-in-law unit finished at our Truckee home. Over the course of nearly two years that this project has taken, we have had reservations about the HVAC/plumber that our contractor uses. This led me to contact Sean to see if he might come onboard to finish the final phases of plumbing work, in lieu of the HVAC/plumber we had been using for two years. He took one look at photos I emailed him, and he knew the shower valve had been roughed out too far, and there would be problems. He advised me it would be better to have the original plumber face the music and correct the work he had done. Sure enough, the original plumber and our contractor were on site the other day, and they realized the rough plumbing on the shower, through a custom tile job, is all going to have to be redone - by cutting out a closet wall behind the bathroom. It's a bit of a mess. The shower pieces were purchased at Ferguson in Truckee almost two years ago, and the original HVAC/plumber used the components for the rough phase on the valve. Since then, neither he nor the contractor saw any issues - until yesterday. Sean saw problems in one glance at a photo attachment in an email. The guy is super sharp - highly recommend. read more

Sean then came to my house on a Saturday morning, reviewed my plumbing situation, and explained to me (including a drawing) a number of larger issues that complicated moving the washer hookup. Amazing service! We called Sean on a Monday evening due to a leak under our kitchen sink. The water was leaking all the way down through the floor into the room below. Sean said he was busy the following day, but could be at our house in 30 minutes! We were blown away that we could find someone able to come over the same day. Sean was extremely polite and courteous and gave us what we thought was a very fair price. He brought in blankets and sheets to protect the floor while he worked.
