He is amazingly communicative and flexible: answers texts, calls, and emails in a timely fashion; has excellent availability/lead time; sent me photos of his work; is personable and warm; is willing to actually talk about his findings and be instructive on how to use my new fixture and things to look out for in the first days after installation (vs some professionals who come and go and don't want to communicate beyond a sentence on the invoice). I had used Don Weston Plumbing for a number of years, and always had to put up with the benign neglect of usually taking 5-6 calls and as many weeks to hear back from him or have him show up, since that seems to be the way it goes in Truckee. Recently, Don led me on for more than 3 months for a job he said he would do, including having me pick up and pay for parts for an aspect of the job. I finally simply asked him to let me know if he was going to actually do the job, after 3+ months of excuses, weeks of not showing for walk throughs, and more broken promises. He didn't even have the courtesy or respect to respond, so I got another plumber to do the job. The plumbing supply house would not take back all the parts Don had me buy for the job he bailed on (some cut pipe), and Don refused to refund me for it. This lack of professionalism to follow through on completing a job, and not have the simply courtesy to give me a yay or nay on it, but also the ethical shortcomings for not paying for the unreturnable parts - tells you all you need to know about him. I gave him two stars because he has done work for me in the past, including an emergency pipe patch, which he seems to think gives him license to be unprofessional and unethical. Even in a heated conversation with him about him bailing on the job, he would take no responsibility for his behavior. Tradespeople and contractors are in demand in Truckee, which breeds arrogance in some thinking they can do whatever they want and treat people with disrespect. It doesn't take a lot to be honest and treat people with respect - Don needs some more practice. Lots of other better plumbers out there to use and avoid the headaches. read more

During one of the biggest storms this winter my disposal died. I asked my land lady to contact someone to help and she said she couldn't find anyone because everyone was too busy with the storm. So I took matters in my own hands and called around. No one could help for a few days or weeks except for Don!! He called me back right back and told me how to fix it over the phone because he wasn't able to get to my house in a few days. A problem that could have taken many days or weeks to fix took 5 minutes. I asked him how much he charged and he said nothing!! It made my day, week, heck my year. He was so nice and it's been fixed ever since. No one else took the time to try to fix it quickly over the phone. I was between a rock and a hard place and he knew it. Don is great. I had an emergency with an on demand water heater that went out while renters were in the house. Don was quick to respond to my panicked phone call. The heater had been installed improperly with a water line that went outside....not a good idea in the mountains. He easily fixed it and charged me what I thought was a reasonable amount for his time and the parts he needed.
