This is the bookstore of my dreams! Like literally, I could wake up here and not question anything! All the little reading nooks, the stakes to the poetry and philosophy sections, the super tall bookshelves that you have to use a ladder to reach, the wide open spaces, and various tables piled with all genre of books... it's like it is a place out of a fairytale! The prices are reasonable, and I spent about $30 each of the 3 times I visited. I doubt recommend visiting during the week, cause Friday through Monday it gets super crowded. But otherwise it's such a great place to get lost in for a few hours. read more

While walking through the seaport area, I saw a sign in McNally Jackson's window advertising books and wine. This was the first time I stumbled upon a place that had both things I love. If more book stores offered alcoholic beverages, more people would read. At least that is my hypothesis. Perhaps I should delve further into my study. Although I didn't imbibe on this visit, it did bring me in the doors and I am so glad it did. The first floor is half cafe/bar and bookstore, and then there is an upstairs that is all whimsical, cozy bookstore. I got lost in there for a half hour. It was delightful. read more

I'm not one that reads much for pleasure; even when I was in school summer reading was always a chore for me. That doesn't stop me from buying books, and if one catches my fancy I'll buy one to add to my shelves (yes, I'm one of those people). With bookstores coming scarce these days (and the pandemic accelerating the depletion), I started to look around to find local, independent booksellers that I can purchase from while also supporting independent businesses. Enter: McNally Jackson. My discovery of McNally Jackson came about as a result of a number of events. A few months back I watched the 1992 Sally Potter film Orlando, and I quickly learned that it was loosely based on Virginia Woolf's 1928 novel of the same name. I loved the film and was curious to explore the book, so I ended up purchasing it from a popular e-commerce website. I was not satisfied with my purchase - the font, binding, and overall look of the book felt cheap, and it was not something I felt like displaying on my bookshelf. I mentioned all these events to my brother who recommended I check out McNally Jackson, since they are both independent booksellers and carry different editions of works. That was enough for me, so I started browsing their website. I learned that they have a number of locations, and when searching for books they give you real-time inventory of what you're looking for at each shop. When searching Orlando I found a 1973 publication of the novel that was available at this Prince Street location, and decided to order it. Since it was going to be difficult or me to pick it up in-store, I decided to have it mailed. The entire process was seamless; the staff kept me in the loop as to when the order would be shipped, and my book arrived very well packed. Overall, I had a great experience with McNally Jackson. They have an interesting selection of books, and I am looking forward to visiting them in person soon to explore even more. read more

We finally went here yesterday - and as with all of McNally Jackson's bookstores, the selection was great & quite eclectic and the staff were very friendly & helpful. Owned by a Rand McNally Road Map (who knew a road map could own a freaking bookstore), this is one of the highlights of this neighbourhood in many ways. This is an adorable little bookstore in New York City in the heart of Greenwich Village and I come down here all the time when I'm in New York, and many other regulars do too. It's got a local feel to it which you can't really say about the vast majority of bookstores these days. It's expensive, and the big downside is that to use the bathroom in here you have to pay. If that weren't the case I'd have given it 5 stars. But having said that, they do cool little quirky things like printing your own books, or even someone else's book for you if it's not copyrighted. Not cheap to do so, but a very cool service that most don't offer. So all in all I'd say it's a really great place with a very memorable cafe as well. read more

although I still miss old McNally Jackson book store in Soho, I'd say 5star here. so many books and stationary selections. if you need a cafe, go to downtown Manhattan location. I like Williamsburg location is the best. it's warm atmosphere, blue bottle coffee & vanlueen are the next to it and I can go there and relax after. What a fantastic, small bookstore! My friend and I did a bookstore crawl across NYC and this was one of our stops! She is a high school teacher and we both enjoy YA - so we were pleasantly surprised to see their large selection of YA and middle grade novels! (They also had a great selection of other genres.) Overall, this store was cozy, not too crowded or loud, and I easily could have spent more time browsing the shelves. We love a great indie bookstore! read more

This is the bookstore that I once dreamed of opening. The selection is incredibly broad, so when I want new Science Fiction, Japanese Mystery or a classic, McNally Jackson has it covered. You'll walk away with something that you want to read. But, I want to talk about the staff (spoiler, they're amazingly great) I once was passing by and saw a book in the window display and thought "I want to come back and buy that." Here's proof that delay rarely profits: I went back two days later and the window display had been changed and my only memory was that "there was a book I wanted." I realized how unlikely this was to turn out well, but I remember *really* wanting "that book," so I went into the counter and said "there was a book in the window a few days ago..." "Sure" the man at the register said "What's the title?" "Ummm, no idea." "What was the subject?" "I don't remember." "Do you know the color of the cover, or if it was hardcover...?" "Nope. I'm sorry." "No worries." He asked his coworker to find out who had changed the window display, called down to her and she brought up the books that had been removed for me to look through. WHAT? REALLY? Best part: I recognized the book: "https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13612949-pataphysical-essays", bought it and got one of the charming school desk seats in the in-store cafe to start reading. *That* is how you earn a fan and a customer for life! But wait... there's more! I had reached the end of my current notebook and the only place that I've seen it was, where I've always bought them, one of McNally Jackson's stores. I came here after work and couldn't find the exact one, something close but the wrong color cover. I asked the employee who was arranging the stationery about it, offering to go around the corner to the other location if I had to. She, Anna, was sympathetic to my being so particular: she offered to go downstairs and see if they had the one I wanted, but also asked if I'd looked at the new notebooks. I demurred, as I told her that I'd been through many before settling on my favorite. She said that she understood completely and was the same way about hers, but suggested it as these were truly new, not before carried and different. She showed me the new ones and... I have a new favorite! The Blackwing with dot paper and pencil. I've been so happy with it and with the fact that someone in a store actually listened to me and helped me discover something I love. read more

This book store is everything you think of when you picture a bookstore. They have a large selection and everything is so organized. Staff is very helpful and they have a lot of 2021 planner stuff on sale. I can't say enough good things about this store other than that I wish I knew about it sooner. I would definitely be back. Well, attached are two photos of what the "old" McNally Jackson bookstore looks like now that it is vacant. As stated in my previous review, the new store vacated it's original Prince Street location in Nolita for a Prince Street location in Soho. Two completely different neighborhoods. Nolita is a community while Soho is a tourist shopping mall. The new MJ looks and feels like Rizzoli Bookstore which once lived and died in Soho on the corner of Prince and West Broadway. Time will tell if the new MJ location attains the same fate. In regards to the old location, well I don't know what went wrong. Most likely the landlord raised the rent but then I can not imagine the rent in Soho being very cheap. Whatever went down, MJ moved and the street has been taken over by vagrants and what have you. Usually there is what seems to be an undocumented migrant women and her kids wrapped in dirty blankets selling candy perched on the former MJ doorstep. She's there now, not just when I took this photo. And every night a homeless person sleeps on the filthy mattress on the sidewalk. Then there is the graffiti and toppled over mailbox. Jeez. I guess that is what happens when a store remains vacant for a good amount of time. Thank you MJ for moving away and being part of the problem. Thank you to the super and landlord of 50 Prince Street who really don't seem to give a crap! And Thank you to the city of NY for becoming an unlivable city for the middle class. I hope the rich tourists enjoy their bookstore in Soho as much as we did when it was in Nolita! read more

Right in the heart of SoHo, McNally Jackson is a cute and vibrant independent bookstore with a really interesting selection of novels, stationary as well as a very nice cafe. It's a really great place to get away from the chaos of shoppers and sit down for a cup of coffee with a nice book. Since it was the end of the year, they also had an entire section dedicated to reduced priced books! Definitely worth checking out. I was able to grab a seat downstairs in one of the larger communal tables but I wasn't able to get any reception. Unfortunately I noticed there was no wifi option either (at least on that floor). Although most people tend to sit in the cafe upstairs, it would've be nice if some kind of WiFi was available! read more

I love this bookstore. On a rainy day, this place is a perfect getaway to sit down, order some coffee, and read a book while listening to the putter patter of the rain on the sidewalk. Coffee is excellent. The coffee shop seating area is adorable (but oftentimes full - it's very likely that you'll have to share a table with someone). There's no outlets or wifi. There is a restroom downstairs. I was reading the recommended books around the ship and found two great books. I haven't bought books for leisure in ages, but I had to in support of this place. Will definitely stop by again. BTW - this place is really close by to Uncle Booms, so call ahead and take a seat here while you wait for your number to be called. ;) read more

This is a small bookstore near Soho/Little Italy with a decent selection. If you want to support an independent bookstore it's definitely worth checking out, especially if you enjoy browsing books. I don't think the cafe portion was open when I went there. read more

McNally Jackson is one of my favorite bookstores in NYC and the Nolita location is the one I frequent the most, given its proximity to Soho and the Lower East Side, which are great neighborhoods for shopping and eating. Pre-COVID, the cafe was always bustling, and I've always thought that it added to the chill ambiance. Nothing smells better than coffee and books. Now during COVID times, there is sometimes a line to get inside due to social distancing. For this reason, I prefer to order my books for pick-up, if I'm not ordering to my house. The staff are really friendly here and it's always great to see what books are recommended. If you're a stationery fiend or know someone who is, I recommend checking out the nearby Goods for the Study on Mulberry, their store specifically designated for pens, paper products, and the like. read more

I appreciate that their buyers go "deep" into the catalogue, bringing all kinds of unusual titles to their shelves. The bathroom needs a quarter with a condescending sign in the bathroom about intravenous needles. I would love to see the correlation with quarter bathrooms and intravenous needles. Maybe the us should just install quarter 25 cent locks on all doors to solve this heroin epidemic. Like maybe if only Philip Seymour Hoffman and some of my friends just had a 25 cent lock on their bathroom doors--they'd still be alive. Fun bookstore with two levels. Stationery and such are on the first floor, and kids books in the basement level. It's always clean, staff are helpful and I always find something compelling to read. Most recently I love that they discounted Barack Obama's latest memoir. Because of social distancing there is a line to get in, but it moves. read more
