We did the Christmas walking tour through the old Dodge mansion known as Meadow brook Farms. This is a beautiful 85,000 square foot house with a fireplace in every room. For the self walking tour the have over 50 Christmas trees decorated as are the various bedrooms, living rooms, ballrooms, etc...There are plenty of guides that can give you history and stories of the original owners and how this estate came to be. The tour 1 hour tour was nice but a bit pricey at $25 each and they did not honor the senior discount on the day we went. Still, a nice walk through. read more

We had our wedding here in October and the day itself was beautiful! The mansion is absolutely breath taking and all our pictures looked stunning at the property. My issue is with the management and coordination. The first thing that I look back on that makes me sad is that none of our programs were passed to guests as they arrived. I still have hundred of them sitting around my house that I put a lot of time and effort into, knowing our guests would have loved them. Plus is had important information on it such as a processional order and timeline of events. My close family even said that NO ONE GREETED THEM as people arrived! And there is someone literally sitting at a desk when you walk in. The biggest thing was that they DID NOT SERVE one of my cakes!!! We had 3 flavors of cake and only 2 cakes were served. I never was told, nor did I get it back from the venue. When I called to address this, meadow brook tried to say the bakery didn't deliver it. So I called the bakery and they ASSURED ME that they delivered all cakes and even gave me the name of who they dropped them off with. When I confronted Meadow Brook about this they never responded!! How upsetting!! I paid for that and wanted it to be served to my guests and they couldn't even give me the decency to apologize for their wrong doing! Terrible! Something that is SO upsetting that happened too was that ALL the favors were thrown away at the end of the night!!! My family and I put SOOO much time into making all the favors and they weren't even given back to us at the end of the night. I cannot believe it! At least ask us if we want them! Another thing that doesn't sit well with me was that the late night snack barely got touched and they threw away HUNDREDS of donuts! No one mentioned anything to me about putting out the late night snack, so I only found out when I saw someone with a donut. My husband didn't even know/get to eat one and we got them because they're his favorite!! Another thing that is so sad looking back on. Also, our coordinator that we communicated with the entire time leading up to the wedding left in the middle of it! She had another person there but we had no idea who he was. Overall, I loved my wedding and it was stunning, but there are many things I look back on that make me sad because of Meadow Brooks lack of management and coordination. LOTS of food was thrown away without the option of taking any home (like OUR CAKE that we paid for, and the late night snack). This really bothers me because WE PAID FOR IT!! No one even asked if it could be thrown away either. One more thing to note is the venue BARELY lets you come before the ceremony, so if you're doing a first look you need to request extra time. My photographer requested we come 2 hours before the ceremony in order to get all our pictures done so we could enjoy cocktail hour. The coordinators let us come early, but originally they only let you come an hour before. So make sure if you are doing pictures beforehand that you ask to come earlier! BIG price tag for all these things to go wrong the day of. Good thing is that none of our guests would have known during the wedding, but it upsets me to look back on knowing this went on behind the scenes. read more

IF you have ever wondered how the Rich and Famous live in this country, Meadow Brook Hall offers an immersive tour of the kind of lifestyle that these folks enjoyed during the 1920's and 1930's. The mansion layout. designs/themes of the various rooms, furnishings, decorations and artwork are fascinating. As an added layer to this tour, it is intertwined with the story of the Dodge and Wilson families who built the mansion and maintained it over the years before donating the building and surrounding 1400 acres to Michigan State University and eventually on to what is now Oakland University. These stories are told by volunteers located throughout the house giving you the history of the various rooms and the family and to answer any questions you may have adds so much more to this tour versus your normal walking tour. Being an engineer and a home DIY guy, the thing that really stood out to me about this building is the level of "Old World" European Craftsmanship that went into this building. From the stonework, to the amazing finished carpentry and all its intricate woodwork, this place exhibits a level of quality that may never be seen again considering the skills and number of people required to create a house of this nature. You just just don't see this level of quality and craftsmanship in today's homes, even the newer more upscale homes, which makes this mansion very special. If you are fan of history, want to see what real American Craftsmanship looks like or just wondering what an old mansion looks like than this is probably a tour that you don't want to miss. Also the seasonal Christmas decor that is currently on display throughout the house (Dec 2023) is worth the tour alone as that is amazing in its own right. read more

This is a review of the Holiday House Tour regular not the light tour at night. You get to see 3 levels of the home with staff letting you know history and interesting stories about how the family lived in it. They even let you in on a few secrets. What I really liked about it, I could use my scooter on all the levels with staff taking me to the elevators so I could. There was only a few areas that was too tight but since I can walk some, I was able to still see. It took about an hour and tickets are timed for the start to make sure it is not too crowded. These sell out so you need to get them early. The many different trees are changing each year to keep it interesting. The gift shop at the end has reasonable prices and a good variety. The only draw back is the limited handicap parking but with the scooter it was still manageable. I will add this to my holiday tradition from now on. read more

I have lived in Rochester and the surrounding area for nearly my entire life and only just a few months ago finally went on a guided house tour of Meadow Brook Hall! I loved having the opportunity to explore this hidden (literally) gem in seemingly my own backyard and learning about the history of it. They offer several different guided tour options and they are all within $10-20, so are in a very affordable range if you're ever looking to learn a bit about Rochester history and view a gorgeous house while you're at it! Our tour guide was so knowledgeable and presented us with so much history and information throughout the tour that kept me super engaged. I am definitely so interested to come here during the holiday months as I'm sure Meadow Brook Hall will be looking stunning during that time all decked out in holiday decorations. I was actually here for a dinner event with a friend that is a professor at Oakland a while back. It was the first time here for an event. I did get a chance to walk around during the reception and before the meal portion of the event started. The mansion is beautiful inside, so much beautiful wood and the detailing is fantastic here. I hear it's quite a sight and so beautifully decorated during the holidays, will have to be back for the holidays, if not this year, maybe next year. It may be a beautiful venue for weddings and events but, we just did a holiday tea and tour there and it was by far the worst afternoon tea we have ever experienced anywhere and I myself have experienced many afternoon teas all around the world including metro Detroit. This must be the reason why there seem to be no place for people to rate their experience for such events at Meadowbrook. Food was non-existant, literally not enough to feed a child and I am a person who doesn't eat much.Most everything including the desert looked and felt second rate store bought. Poor service, although there were a ton of servers on the floor. Arrogant and you may even say rude event leads. Even the mansion tour m, which was a part of this experience, was self guided. And we paid $85 /person for something that likely cost them less than $10/person. Funny thing was that they asked for donation at the back end too and said their event leads income is dependent on that! Seriously!!! You treat people with so little regard and expect support. I would have donated if I had a positive experience as I am an avid lover of historic places. I mean they didn't even make a remote attempt in offering their customers a semi descent experience. As it is it felt like a complete rip off. None of us will ever consider going back there for their events. Very very sad! I would have loved to recommend the place and help them bring in more revenue but I cannot. I hope some senior level management there or their board of directors, if they have one , see this comment and do something about it. It is a lovely place, so beautifully decorated for Christmas. It deserves better event management and culinary support. read more

Last year, on December 30, 2021, I had the opportunity to go see the Winter Wonder Lights at Meadow Brook for the Holidays. The weather was not that bad, and we had an awesome time!! I want to go back this year as they did a really good job both inside and out and I love the people that work there. They are always so nice and knowledgeable! Lots of musical spots to enjoy, plenty of lights! I'm appreciative that they came up with this idea as living in Lapeer county, a lot of the light shows like greenfield village, or downtown Detroit, Glenlore Trails-they are all pretty far. It's a great "last minute" decision you can make living not far from the area. The added addition of the tents with a "bar" was a plus. It gave us time to just enjoy the view around us. We didn't notice either that there was an abundance of people because it is so spread out. Many great spots for photo opportunities! I have always loved the estate inside and out any time of year, but I have to say Christmas is my favorite here. It really does help you be in the spirit of things, and you get a sense of what it was like for the family living their lives. Looking out over the vast snow covered property with all the decorations behind you, it was peaceful. Great event for anyone! read more

This review is solely regarding my experience booking a photo session at MBH for my wedding, for which I paid $600 for 2.5 hours. I reserved a photo session at MBH several months before my August wedding for my bridal party photos. The coordinator, Claire Tensa, was extremely responsive to emails and I trusted that everything would go according to plan. Claire let me know that there would be another wedding taking place inside MBH and that we were only permitted to take photos outside strictly from 1-3:30 PM, which we respected. On the day of our wedding, I watched FIVE other brides taking photos during our time slot. Our photographer couldn't position us in several places because other brides were already there. Bride after bride would walk past our wedding party, to the point where it became comical. No one was asking them to leave or requesting permits, which made me feel silly for following Meadow Brook's rules and regulations when they aren't enforced in the first place. I called Claire last week to air my frustrations and asked to be followed up by email, but no one has reached out to offer any reimbursement for how frustrating the experience was. Claire confirmed that besides the bridal party having their wedding directly at MBH, I was the only one who was supposed to be taking photos during that time. Paying $600 for 2.5 hours is egregious as is, but watching other brides walk up without any reservations and take away from our time there was beyond frustrating. I hope this helps other brides looking to take their photos here. read more

Stunning! If you love history and want to step back in time, this iconic landmark won't disappoint! It is the home of Matilda and Alfred Wilson + children. Matilda had been a widow of John Dodge - the automaker. The art, the history, the collections, and of course, the family history are all intrinsically intertwined in the majestic hills of Michigan tucked away, but very accessible. They have wheelchairs on-site that can get around to most everything. The guides are scattered throughout the home to give this place a wonderful perspective that you might not get just walking around. There is a nice gift shop on the property and you can also visit the play house and cabin where the children played in the woods. Truly worth the trip! read more

I visited meadow brook hall for the "art in the elements" nature walk show that had been advertised on NPR. Based on the description on NPR and the photos on the website, I thought the ticket prices of $25 for myself and $10 for my 6 year old were worth it. As we began the walk, and I saw the first couple of "installations", I wondered with dismay if they would be representative of the whole show. Sadly, they were. Basic floral arrangements accompanied by some props. Kind of high school level "art". I guess I was expecting something more dramatic, more creative, more architectural and more magical. I was expecting to see the image that was on the website, which I never came across. Also, the whole theme of the show was music...specific songs or genres. Only a couple of the installations had the songs playing alongside them, very faintly. In terms of being marked, each exhibit displayed the name of the artist, but not the particular song or music genre it was focused on, so you were left to guess, or, to find that information, you had to look on your phone at the barcode information given at the beginning of the walk. So you're walking through nature, looking at pretty sad displays, wondering what they're supposed to be about, spending time looking at your phone to find out, and wishing you could actually hear the song that the art is supposed to be about, to connect the 2. WEAK SAUCE. not worth the $ or the long drive from Detroit proper. Disappointing. read more

Nice venue for weddings, corporate events and fundraising. There's a golf course and the grass has never looked better in green. Attended a fundraising event and there was valet parking, go carts and shuttle service if you parked at the very end. I have not looked so much inside. There is a day tour for $10 or $15 per person. I have been to Meadow Brook Hall many times and each time I learn something new and inspired even more by the Wilson family who called Meadow Brook home. I am a Meadow Brook Member and it pays off. We have been invited to some exclusive events just for members or we get a discount for educational events and community programs. Walking the home or the grounds never gets old, especially the summer months outside are the best with the gardens. It is truly a beautiful and special place that deserves to be maintained and learned about. Recently we went on a guided candlelight tour during the holidays and it was a great experience. It was at night time which I have never been to the hall during the night and it was a much different experience than during the day. Going to Meadow Brook during the holidays as well is very special and the volunteers do a fantastic job decorating. Meadow Brook Hall is a great place for families with children or couples for a date. The volunteers are there to share their wealth of knowledge, so do not be afraid to ask questions if you have them! This is truly a special place, especially check out the dodge cars if the garages are open! Let us not forget that Dodge history lives within Meadow Brook Hall even though Mr. Dodge never lived there. This is one of my favorite local places - lots of history and soul. read more

Had never visited Meadow Brook Hall before and had always wanted to tour the grounds. We decided to visit during the Holiday Walk for the Christmas lighting and decorations. All I can say is WOW! This amazing home and grounds is a must visit! The staff and docents were just above and beyond any expectations you may have. From their friendliness to their knowledge of the Dodge and Wilson family they made the whole experience a memorable one. Definitely plan on spending two to three hours exploring the home and grounds. We were there right at about three hours and never lingered about much there is that much to see. I knew a little of the Dodge story from some History Channel documentaries we've watched and I am a huge fan of Tudor/Tudor-revival architecture, so I knew I'd enjoy a tour of the home. We did the tour on a Friday at 1 PM. There were roughly 10 people in our tour group. The tour started with a brief history or the Dodge family, including Matilda's second husband, Alfred Wilson, and their adopted children. After an intro to the family, our tour guide gave a quick overview on how Meadow Brook came to be, then we proceeded on the tour. We moved from area to area pretty quickly, which is my one complaint of the tour. Some of the spaces were small and we had to take turns looking into rooms, so the tour guide would often be calling us to move to another area before we really had a good chance to look around. The house is beautiful, though clearly some areas need more restoration than others. We do plan to return for the "Behind the Scenes" tour to see some of the areas that aren't included on the regular tour. Tour times are limited and there is no free roaming though the house. Plan accordingly and make sure not to miss the tour times if you want to see the inside. The grounds outside can be walked around during "open" hours listed on the website. read more

Was in town last weekend for my cousin's wedding. Meadow Brook was a gorgeous venue with lovely views/photo opps and delicious food. After the ceremony guests were able to walk the grounds and view the estate. Estate employees were available throughout the house to answer questions and guide us through its many rooms. The wedding meal started off with a greens salad wrapped in cucumber slivers. The main course was a roasted chicken with potatoes and veggies. I was served the vegetarian option: a delicious pasta dish with creamy tomato sauce and balsamic reduction, spinach, veggies, and cheese. My family (and fellow table mates) said the chicken was moist and cooked perfectly. I know mass-produced chicken usually gets a bad rap for being over-cooked and dried out; not this time I guess. We have been here several times and it is always amazing to me how the well to do so called Auto Barons lived back in the day. There are feature in this property that are impressive even compared to many high end properties of today. And we seem to learn something new every time we visit Meadow Brook Hall. It is sometimes referred to as the Dodge Mansion although he never actually lived here as he died before it was completed and became the home of his widow. Meadow Brook is especially impressive when it is decorated around the Christmas and New Years holidays making for a truly memorable experience. Years ago they actually were set up to allow for overnight stays if you had a minimum party size (I believe it was something like at least 14). We were fortunate enough to have been part of a group that was able to do this starting with a wine and cheese reception. Then we had a guided group tour of Meadow Brook where we learned a lot of the history of the property and particulars about some of the rooms. We also made use of the pool room that had been stocked with refreshments so we wouldn't go thirsty while lining up our winning shots. The stay also included a full sit down dinner and a breakfast in the morning before we left. We each got to pick a room that we were interested in for our overnight stay; we chose Danny's Room, their son who tragically drowned in his early 20's, I believe. His room had a built in hiding place where he could go and look down into his room from above. And the shower...let me just say this, we may sometimes joke about a car wash shower, but he actually had one! It hit you from all directions, once we figured out what all of the handles and knobs did. Based on the amount of water it hits you with, it would probably be illegal to put something like that in these days because...environment, or something. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and have fun anytime we visit there, especially when we take out-of-town guests there when they are here. It really makes for a relaxing walk back in time in the most pleasant and interesting surroundings. If you haven't yet been there, make sure to put it on you To-Do List...do it NOW! read more

Meadow Brook Hall was built by one of the matriarchs of the auto industry. The two Dodge brothers used to work for Ford and actually helped finance the Ford company to get it started, but decided to leave later to form the Dodge car company. Their niche was to not build cars with wooden frames, but to make them out of metal. They did initially cost more, yet also lasted much longer. Unfortunately, John Dodge died fairly young leaving his wife enough riches to be one of the wealthiest women on the planet! Later she married a man who made his fortune from the lumber industry and together they built this mansion on property bought by her first husband. Not satisfied just being a socialite Matilda also became the very first woman lieutenant governor of Michigan! After they passed away, these two charitable people left the house and grounds to establish what became Oakland University in MI. When I tell you that this estate is 88,000 sq. ft./110 rooms in an English Tudor style you could still not imagine it's splendor and beauty. As a matter of fact, Meadow Brook Hall is the 6th largest historic home in the entire U.S.! From the invaluable art, landscaping, furniture and architecture, your breath will be taken away. The architectural detail and craftsmanship is second to none of it's kind. Unfortunately ,you could only take photos without a flash and the lights were very low so as not to damage the original fineries. Thus, you will only see photos I took of the exterior. The tours last 1 1/2 hours year round led by docents who are well-versed in the history of the manor as well as the family. These days the opulent surroundings are also put into service for weddings or as a place to have client meetings. No matter your reason for going there, you will not be disappointed. read more

Love this place! We go back every single year for Holiday Walk. It's an annual tradition in my household. The holiday season is just not complete without a tour of Meadow Brook during Christmas. From the decked out trees to festive lights, it just feels like Christmas. A national landmark, Meadow Brook Hall was erected in the 1920's during the heyday of the Jazz Age. It's one of the finest examples of Tudor-revival architecture, boasting ornate woodcarvings, incredible stonework and the famed Christopher Wren-designed formal dining room. The attention to detail found in the craftsmanship is rivaled by only a handful of architectural examples in this country. In fact, Meadow Brook is ranked as a U.S. National Historic Landmark, Michigan State Historic Site and is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. It's in a class all its own, though time has caused some wear and tear, requiring constant upkeep and renovations to keep Meadow Brook going. There's usually some sort of ongoing conservation effort at Meadow Brook, apart from the daily running of this behemoth of a home. Apart from the house itself are beautiful gardens and the restored Danny's Cabin and Knole Cottage, both found on the grounds nearby. Those are included in the price of admission. If you want to pick up a trinket to commemorate your visit, there are two museum gift shops on hand to do just that. This estate is a bona fide national treasure. I would love to back for tea sometime and to visit the gardens in the spring. Photos don't do this place justice. What a treasure to behold. read more

A few weeks ago I did a tour of the mansion 88,000 ft.² I was completely blown away. Everything is so intricate an absolutely stunning. Even in one room and it brought me to tears because the elaborate ceiling of the angels and babies were unbelievable. I suggest anyone and everyone at least go once but I can guarantee you're going to need a few times to see everything. Our family loves visiting the mansion. We visit every Christmas. It is typically one of our first family Christmas time events. We love the evening lights which have recently been added and hope that the hours for those events are extended. We have also visited in the spring/summer and late summer is an beautiful time to visit when the flowers are full and in bloom. The docents and staff are courteous, friendly and helpful. This review is late, but better late than never. A few years ago, long before my husband and I were engaged, we were visiting my family in Michigan for the holidays. We were bored one night and while looking for things to do, learned about a free tour at Meadow Brook Hall. Little did we know, it was actually an event for prospective brides and grooms. As we left Meadow Brook, my now husband and I couldn't stop talking about the hall. "I can't believe you grew up around here and never knew about this place," he said. We were blown away by the history and charm, but ultimately wrote it off as a space that we would never be able to afford. Fast forward a few years later, we're engaged and looking for a venue. We considered a variety of options near New York City, where we live, California, Philadelphia, and Michigan. When a well-established and renowned event planning company encouraged us to reconsider Meadow Brook and helped us put together a budget to help us evaluate our options, we realized we could in fact make it work and went ahead with the venue with our fingers crossed. And it was EXCELLENT. First of all, the team at Meadow Brook Hall is phenomenal; it's a well-oiled machine, which is what you want for the biggest personal event you're likely to ever plan. Sure, the venue is not cheap, but along with what you pay you can expect excellent personal attention and a staff that knows what they're doing. Our primary contact was Alexis, and as a self-professed, type A, ultra organized, client-serving New York City lawyer, I have high standards. Alexis met every one and is a pleasure to work with to boot. You want personal attention, responsiveness, intelligence, and kindness when you're doing this -- for this alone, I would really trust Meadow Brook with your event. Second, the grounds are fantastic. Our ceremony was outdoors and our reception was under the tent. The flowers were all in bloom and our guests couldn't stop talking about the landscape. If you're thinking about putting up a tent in some clearing and outfitting it for a chance of rain, don't. Meadow Brook's tent is a semi-permanent structure with a concrete floor, chandeliers, and flaps that close in the event of inclement weather. It will be gorgeous under there under almost any circumstance, and having that certainty is priceless. Third, the chef is excellent. Weddings are expensive. When you put down money for the food and open bar -- often a large part of your budget -- you want to ensure it's delicious. We created a modern Indian menu of chicken, fish, and vegetarian entrees that the chef executed perfectly. We're also not fans of wedding cake, so asked for a dessert bar and chai station, requests that were met rather easily and that were incredible. Many of our guests have gone out of their way to express how good their meal was -- a few have stated it was the best wedding food they'd ever had. We were very happy with Meadow Brook's service, and the event turned out exactly as we imagined it would. It's a magical place that you'll be happy you chose for years to come. Thanks, Meadow Brook! This place is absolutely amazing, I had the pleasure of touring the compound recently and decided to write a review about it. You cannot visit without an appointment or a tour taking place, the grounds are closed off. If you have the money, and enjoy the finer things in life you should host your events here. The castle exterior is astounding and is perfect for any photo session. The interior is well taken care of, as you can see in most of the pictures the decor speaks for itself. The grounds are well taken care of and there is an arch walkway perfect for engagement or wedding pictures. I hope to one day host an event here in the future. The service staff are pleasant and respectful, they respond to your inquiries fast and are ready to get things going for any of your requested events. If you want your special day to be here I would book in a year or so in advance because their calendar fills up quickly. Even just walking to the venue itself is like an adventure since you have to go through a small walkway trail and then head to the gate, and entrance. $30 for two tickets for a house tour. They didn't think it was worth their while to send a guide to lead the tour as we were just two on the tour. A junior trainee who had never lead a tour was sent to take us through the house. She was good but rushed towards the end. Check before you buy a ticket who is going to lead the tour. read more
