Where do I start with Mean Bean. Well let me start with saying it was the BEST cup of coffee I have ever had. I stumbled upon Mean Bean by accident. Even though I have been to galena many times, I never noticed it until this last trip. When you walk in you can smell the aroma in the air, and you know are in a legit coffee house. The menu to me was not as helpful as I thought it could of been but Gina, the woman working there was fantastic. After some chit chat about how I found them she explained to me what they could do, which is basically create any coffee creation you can think of. After asking me my preferences she brewed me a fresh cup of the strongest coffee they had, and it was delicious. I came back the following day for another cup and she again brewed me another fresh cup of coffee. Gina is a very friendly barista, who really takes the time to understand what the customer wants and creates a unique cup of coffee for them. Mean Bean has A LOT going on. They roast a huge variety of house roasted beans, which means they have a large stock of bagged beans (of all varieties) for sale. They make fresh fried mini donuts. They make a huge variety of flavored syrups. I think I saw a display of CBD oils? I'm just sayin'. Everything but the kitchen sink in here. We came in for a coffee. While they do have a small seating area, I would say it's more of a grab and go situation. Our lattes were good (a little over-steamed, but solid). Coffee lovers, rejoice! Any kind of flavor coffee you can think of, most likely they have it here. A couple of our favorites include Bananas Foster and Amaretto. They can even make k-cups (they call them a-cups) if you have a keurig. What I like best is that their flavored coffee isn't weak. So many of the ones you find in the grocery stores are made with a light roast but I don't think that's the case at Mean Bean. Plus the quality is better too. Another plus is that you can order online and they ship to you, something we take advantage of a lot. read more

Here from California on vacation. Stopped in to get some beans for a friend. Barista was very curt and unhelpful. This was on 11/16.

Disappointing experience. I was looking forward to a great cup of coffee based on reviews. If you like flavored coffee than this place is for you. They advertise over 200,000 flavor combinations. However, if you don't like flavored coffee you're basically out of luck. All I wanted was a cup of fresh, black unflavored coffee. I was told I could try the two samples at the front of the store (one was medium roast and the other was something flavored). I wasn't impressed with either one. I'm not a fan of flavored coffee and the other one didn't have a good taste. I thought with all of those coffees on the shelf there would be other options or the suggestion that a pour over could be made with something different, but the barista made no mention at all of this. I thought the upsell of the CBD oil offered to the person ahead of me was comical. The guy (an older man) didn't know what it was. I would have been annoyed had he offered me that had I bought coffee. Not everyone is jumping on the CBD bandwagon. This place has nothing going for it. No real place to sit, very cluttered and not relaxing at all. 2 stars only because of the samples even though I didn't like them. read more

As we were driving through LeClaire, Iowa a Sherriff pulled us over and we started talking telling him we actually were staying in Galena, Illinois. He was so friendly that he recommened the Mean Bean as the best spot in Galena for amazing coffee! my boyfriend and I came in because we are big coffee drinkers. we have never been to Galena, so we were excited to try this place. there was a couple in front of us, asking the Barista questions about the giant coffee roaster in the facility. she seemed to lack knowledge on it and seemed a tad bit rude about it. my boyfriend and I ordered our lattes. him and I are both baristas, who know how to make a simple latte. the barista poured the milk into the cup and the foam just plopped on the top. overall, the taste was terrible. our drinks tasted so bad that we couldn't even finish them. overall, we will not be coming back. read more

We newlyweds were from out-of-town on our mini-moon and made Mean Bean our coffee headquarters for the weekend! The smell when you walk in is divine. And from our first lattes to the bags we brought home, this was the real deal! We loved that we could choose our own flavors; we tried something new each day. My wife loved the iced coffees while the hot lattes I got were deliciously delicious. The freshly roasted coffee was the perfect base for the long list of flavor combinations -- I loved the churro as well as the coffee cake/dulce de leche combo while my wife loved the salted caramel/french vanilla concoction. Many were even sugar free. This little shop has it all; it packs a mean bean! You won't be disappointed and the owner, our Chicago gal, is awesome and authentic. We loved her hospitality, hearing her story and all her recommendations. We will be ordering from the website and hope to visit again, soon!! read more

Wow! What a neat place! This coffee shop came highly recommended from someone staying at the same B&B as us, and did we luck out! We stopped by thinking it would be a good place to pass some time before our next set of plans. We ended up staying MUCH longer. This place does so much more than sell coffee! You can create any flavor blend you can imagine, and turn it into coffee, or even individualized k-Cups! How cool is that?! If that isn't enough for you...get ready for the holidays, because you will never have to think of a gift for those hard to buy for people on your list again! The smell is what drew me in. I asked if all their coffee is roasted in-house and she said yes. I wanted something for our son back at home and I also wanted some whole bean decaf. She put together something for me that was flavored. Total for all, 2 lbs. of coffee, was $35. My son's was ground in the store and mine was left whole bean. My son has tried both flavors that I bought him and didn't like either. They smell wonderful, but they're burnt. He is going to try and give them to a friend to try. Mine I have only tried twice and while I agree with my son about them being burnt I may just keep trying to drink them. I do think there is too much flavoring in them. So maybe if you are going to try them do without the flavor. Or ask them to back off a little. Store clerk was not helpful and seemed to be more interested in what was going on in her back room. read more

Great customer service! The cinnamon house blend was really good & I loved my spiced chai tea latte! They even had heavy whipping cream (rather than half & half) which is a for us!! Very cool coffee place. It's very fun to order a coffee to drink while making your own "mix" of flavors to take home. I though my iced latte was great and everyone in our group enjoyed theirs as well. My personal favorite was the Maple bacon coffee. Amazing! Not a lot of seating, as it's a smaller space. The coffee was not very good. I paid a premium for a product that was not what I would consider "craft coffee." The employees were somewhat friendly but the owner was not. I would recommend going somewhere that pays more attention to the quality of their coffee and service. read more

4 starts for the environment. Fun environment and being able to choose flavors was exciting for a foodie and coffee lover. The barista added steamed milk to my cinnamon hazelnut coffee. I wished I had tried it before letting her do that. I like a strong coffee with a touch of cream. Their coffee is not super strong so taste before adding cream or sugar first. Give it a try! We used a groupon and got a great deal that included 1/2 lb of coffee. Since I have been home and used their coffee in my machine, I am very impressed! We got the Crumb Cake flavor and it is excellent! The selection of flavors for coffee was great! Tons of different options. The coffee portions are overly generous as well. The two women, I think mother/daughter, behind the counter were very friendly even though they were super busy. The only thing we didn't like was the layout and awkwardness of the whole place. There was kind of a line but no structure. There were two high tables for seating at the front but no room to walk around because of the huge roasting machine. Would be a nice place to visit if it hadn't been so crowded. read more

We have had a vacation home for almost 10 years in Galena and this is our favorite place to come get coffee when we are in town. My husband loves all the flavors, I'm more of a black coffee fan myself. They always have lots of different options to take home for both types of drinkers though, and it's always fresh. My husband and I were desperate for a great cup of coffee while staying in Galena, and we thought that a place that roasts their own beans would be our best bet. The shop is small and cozy and has two high-tops at the front of the shop, overlooking the streets. My kids loved the sit-and-swivel bar stools but that's about the extent of our love for Mean Bean. We realized after we ordered (just a small cappuccino) that this coffee roaster is really more about adding one of dozens of flavors to your coffee, letting you customize your own drink. It's really about /adding/ the flavor, though, not about the underlying goodness of the brew. We found the coffee to be over-roasted, giving it the tell tale burnt and bitter flavor. We didn't finish our drink, and wouldn't go back unless we heard some amazing things about the place. read more

I spent almost $7 on two coffees. They basically roast coffee and add flavor syrup to make it flavored coffee. The lady that waited on us was extremely rude. I ordered their specialty roast that was Irish cream. I watched her walk to the other side of the shop to fill my small coffee from an air pot that was sitting out. My coffee tasted over roasted, burnt. We wanted to sit and have coffee in a shop.. They had some crappy uncomfortable stools by some metal tables (not the warm, comfy coffee shop,we had wanted). We left in a few minutes because the worker was cleaning like an angry teenager.... Ie: slamming everything down, etc. so we left. I drank 3 sips of my coffee and tossed it. My husband wasn't impressed either. I'd like my $ back. read more
