The decor in here is absolutely FABULOUS. I completely couldn't get ever the detail and intricacies of everything from the walls to the ceilings. House Grub drink was a sweet pineapple flavor. I've heard it could be quite strong which is why there's a max of two you can order. I got their Chili Dog since I'm a sucker for chili. I was under the (kinda dumb) impression that it was a chili dog inspired burger since it was under the burger section... I was wrong. Despite that, the chili dog was good and had a nice kick to it. I was a tad disappointed in the ice cream. We got the Jagermeister ice cream which came out as a tiny tiny carton. Nothing special and not worth the 6 pounds. read more

What would happen if Saw and a slaughterhouse had a baby and that baby was a burger place? Meat Liquor! I've been meaning to go here for way too long and I am glad I finally got the chance. Went there for Saturday lunch with some lovely yelp ladies and I had a lovely time. I started with their banoffee milkshake and then had the garbage plate (burger patty, onions and chips with gravy on top). Both of them were delicious and very filling. As for our waitress I have to describe her as sassy, full of energy and attitude but very welcoming and helpful. She definitely completed the experience of the place and I wish all waitresses were like that. I liked Angel's version of Meat liquor more than I expected to!! I really like the burgers and drinks in the original Meat-land over in Marylebone (I'll call it Mary-le-Meat)...but there were always a couple of issues that would put me of visiting there. Angel-Meat did everything better... Coldness: - Mary-le-Meat was always really chilly! Angel-Meat was definitely better on this front. Queues: - Mary-le-Meat always seems to have a line. We had to wait for aaages when it first opened!! Angel-Meat lets you book(!) We wandered straight in without standing in the cold at all! Noise: - I like the music in both, but Mary-le-Meat can be so loud that its best to visit with just one friend (so your heads can be close and allow you to hear each other) Angel-Meat was waaaay better for this. I could hear all my friends and speak without having to scream - yay!! Food-wise everything was really good. We had chips, monkey fingers (oh my goodness I love monkey-finger sauce!) and those looovely fried gherkins. I tried one of the chicken burgers and it was sooooo good! It was also MASSIVE, about the size of half a chicken! I felt uncomfortably full afterwards...so I don't think I could come here too often! Oh...and the hard shakes! Ahhh the Meat Liquor crew win again! This is not my favourite as Meat Market holds that special spot in my life, but I'm happy to report this place is great too. They don't have the slushies but a bourbon coke float hit the spot.. then onto the dead hippie deliciousness and I was in my happy place. The dead hippie fries, topped with the dh sauce and luscious caramelised onions topped things off in style.. The bench style eating was fun as I got chatting to fellow diners, which I'm not sure my date appreciated, but you just have to share menu recommendations to newbies as far as I'm concerned! The whole place is like a crazy acid trip utopia like a mad max vibe with some animals. Loads of weird and wonderful pictures and flags all over the place. The staff are always buzzing and so happy to help and have a candid chat. I have been to meat market in covent garden and the menu is pretty much similar apart from a few changes. I always order the hippie fries and the monkey fingers cos that stuff is so addictive !! The onion rings were massive literally the size of my face. Me and my friends went when there was a 50% deal so it worked out that we got a this whole tray of stuff for £30! Would definitely recommend. read more

I always get the same thing when I go to Meatliquor (I always go to the one in Marylebone), and I had the same thing here today - deep fried pickles, sub dead hippy sauce for blue cheese, and a bacon cheeseburger. I found the food here to be better than what I get at Marylebone. The pickles actually had a bit of pickle in amongst the batter, and the burger had plenty of seasoning and was a nice medium rare. I also approve of the venue - it has the normal dirty/grungy ML look but felt a lot more airy because of the high ceiling. I think geographically it's a bit far up Upper Street to be really accessible but it's not that bad. Service was friendly. Pricing was the same as at Marylebone, down to the stupid 'charity donation' which I took off (and promptly put into a GOSH bucket at King's Cross on my way home). read more

Plates. Why don't burger places do plates anymore? At Diner, you get plastic baskets, at Five Guys you get a paper bag, at Meat Liquor you get a tray. Oh, I don't mind my trendily named burgers and toppings all cooked medium or medium pink, but please, I just want a plate. Showing my age now... Meat Liquor is just off Upper Street (the more Angel end). There's a glowing neon sign pointing to an alleyway but you can't actually see Meat Liquor from the road. It's deliberately a little grungy inside, being the sort of place you would take friends rather than parents or colleagues. The nearby Byron is one of the more deliberately distressed looking Byron restaurants in London, but this has a younger feel due to the copious amount of neon signs, TV screens and noise (sorry, music). The burgers are probably slightly smaller than other chains, with the sides slightly bigger. You could easily share a portion with one other person, maybe even two. The specials don't seem to be that different to the ones on the main menu, but let's face it, people don't tend to want to be that adventurous with a burger. They just want a bit of dead animal in a bun. Service is fast, unobtrusive and the food is cooked well. At £28 for burgers, soft drinks and a side to share, the pricing is pretty much on a par with every other modern burger chain out there. Veggie options are limited though (if you don't eat meat, my advice is to hunt down a Haché where there's an actual choice of vegetarian patties). I'd happily eat there again if in the area, but I wouldn't travel to get there. read more

First things first. I love the location. It's in Angel/Highbury. We know what MeatLiquor is about. Grungey admittedly dirty street cool burger place. Out of place for area which is why I like it. Secondly it's actually hidden out down an alley. Bonus. Like idea of things hidden inside places. The outside is how it is. Almost like dirty burger shack. They've gone all out on funky interior in their new branch in Islington! The Warriors (type) meets Maccy D's (signage) meets 1985 (CCTV) meets Meatmission (artwork) meets Dirty Burger (exterior). You also enter the toilets and... BAM!!!!! It's like a scene from Enter the Void meets a night out in Berlin. Love it. What I would say that the food and this was the second day of opening training and it's nothing to do with staff is the food. It's ok/good but not of standard yet as others. I have always championed their chicken burger as one of my favs in London. This was good but no where near a hot or crispy or delicious as previous branches. Not sure if it was seasoning or the way it was cooked? It had a nice addition is cheese which was nice tho. Just didn't have previous wow factor. The dead hippie chips were the most disappointing. I didn't bother finishing it. Sauce added nothing and onion sauce was just not nice. The prawn skewers were a bit salty for my Taste too. On positives...the shakes. Wow did I say hard shakes? Maple Syrup, Bourbon, Vanilla Shake. Did I mention it has Bourbon? This is my shake man. Fav flavour. Fav spirit. So good I ordered it twice. Deep fried pickles were as usual fantastic. Struggling to find a burger that tops the rest? Well, try this place on for size! Meat Liquor N1 was strongly recommended to me by another burger lover and I didn't wait to see what the hype was about. Finding the place wasn't so bad once I whipped out google maps. The burger joint is hidden back from the main high street known as Upper Street. The decor was the first thing that caught my eye; loud and interesting! You could tell the owners had made an effort to make the place stand out from the other burger joints, so much so they converted an old Citroen garage. Seated within minutes, I ordered from their extensive cocktail menu which had a personal touch - meatjito anyone? I ordered the bacon and cheese burger and plain fries. The food arrived within good time on a tray and well presented. It was hard to resist the food while I took a picture! The food was a good price but if you are counting the pennies, watch those cocktails. All in all, good service, excellent food and awesome surroundings - I thoroughly recommend :) read more

We went on a Thursday evening and it was moderately busy. We sat on the patio which was cool. The inside is dark but jt didn't look unbearably dark. Our waiter was kind but very slow. It took us about 10 minutes to get a drink order then another 10 to actually get the drinks. We noticed we weren't the only table receiving slow service. Everyone waited patiently for the waiter to return but he just didn't. I did see a large party come in behind us so I'm sure that's why it was slow but I don't know if it should have been as bad as it was. The food was good. We got the hot wing strips. They weren't actually hot but it was okay because the flavor was nice. All in all, I would say I don't understand the hype around this place but I would recommend trying it out. read more

Remember when people used to queue for Meat Liquor? Wow, those were the days. The days of pointless hype. Well, hype is dead and now there's a Meat Liquor conveniently located in Angel. We went when I was horrendously hungover. Oh life, why do you hate me so? First things first, this might be my favourite of their venues. It's wickedly try-hard with the flare all over the walls and the 'we're alternative' dark signage but it kinda works. I dig how the bathroom looks like an acid trip in deepest Camden. And the upside down McDonalds' sign is kinda cool. I think the slow realisation that Meat Liquor is basically McDonalds food has hit me though. My boyfriend said it's supposed to be the 'alternative McDonalds' but the only alternative is that the food is just a bit wetter but tastes mainly the same and costs three times as much. Namely their hippie chips taste exactly like a Big Mac and look like a pile of crap they scrapped off the floor. I think they are supposed to taste that way, but why? Why make it taste like a Big Mac? Are they trying to do an In 'N' Out burger thing? Maybe they shouldn't. I got a regular cheeseburger and it was the same wet mess that you always get there. I didn't even finish it. The best bit for me were the monkey fingers, those are damn-good! I think I am just bored of their food. Once you've had it a few times, you realise that it is just not good. And I hate that they shove pickles and onions in everything. We paid like £44 for our food. Seriously... what a joke. read more

There are so many good burger options now in London and so maybe my standards have changed but Meatliquor was good but not brilliant. The location is great being housed in a former Citroen garage and former pop up restaurant space. I like how they have designed the interior with a kind of metal rock vibe and quite dark with neon lights and signs. We went on what we thought would be quiet time quite late but the place was quite full. They directed us to the bar area (no real room to wait) and ordered beers. They do that thing of serving 2/3 pints for the price of a normal pint to confuse you and if you want 2 pints for 2 people they insist on filling some sort of poncy giant glass bottle that would probably only be 1/3 full with 2 pints and then you can pour it out and feel a bit ridiculous. We opted for a hassle free 2/3 pint each. Finally we sat down. The burgers took quite a while to arrive and were good enough but not the best I've had around town. Fries were OK and onion rings good. My partner ordered Greek salad which was pretty good. Overall fairly pricey I think and nice enough but won't be rushing back. read more

How can you not love a MEATliquor without a queue? Tucked down a back alley that could be straight out of Bruce Wayne's nightmares, the joint is as delightfully arcane as the original. There's a lot of seats and better lighting that doesn't make it feel as if the walls are entirely covered in someone's (else's) blood. The food is a greasy, beautiful mess of delicious gluttony. The green chili cheeseburger is gooey and packed with enough chilis (and jalapeños, methinks) to put a lingering burn on your lips that only a couple of smooth ales will cool. The prices are average for a London burger joint, with all the burgers in the £8-9 range and beers around £4-6 depending on cans or taps. read more

"Wait, you want to order food from a place called Meat Licker?" That was me before I actually looked the place up. My buddy and I decided to order some burgers and chicken sandwiches through Deliveroo. The fried chicken sandwich was pretty good. Messy and delicious, just the way I like it. We also ordered some Buffalo fries, which was weird. Bleu cheese was mixed in with the fries, and the Buffalo sauce was on the side (makes sense), but they also gave us a second box of plain fries. Not sure if that was a mistake or if that's just how they do it. Also, don't forget about a boozy milkshake! The banana one was so rich and tasted dangerously non-boozy. Their website lists more flavors than they have available on Deliveroo, so that's kinda lame. Anyway, delivery was quick, and we enjoyed everything! read more

Everyone here is very sociable and polite; the decor is so cool (if you're into alt vibes), and the drinks are top notch. 100% recommend if you're in the mood for late night live music and an overall good time. OK Meatliquor is on Upper Street Islington so it has plenty of transport, lots of buses with the nearest underground stations Angel and Highbury & Islington being walking distance, and it's not that far from Essex Road Overground station. First of all the place looks amazing with weirdly my favourite thing being the dark, creepy, graffitied toilets looking like a horror film set, it's a thing of art. I keep thinking one day someone's going to take advantage, jump out and scare the living daylights out of me...easily done in that place. But although it looks amazing, I didn't think much of the restaurant itself. The waitress was feisty and over the top, sort of if a TGI Friday's waitress was caught up in a zombie apocalypse saying and doing whatever she felt like because sh*t people are dying here....kind of way. In other words she was waaaaay too much for me. When I ordered their so called popular best burger, a Dead Hippie, I told her I don't like cheese so don't include it. The waitress made a massive deal over it. She couldn't believe I didn't like cheese, she's never met anyone that doesn't like cheese.....on and on and on, she wouldn't let it go! Then later when I wanted to order a bottle of mineral water I asked her what brand they stock. TGI Waitress Gone Wrong replies "I don't know. No one's ever asked me that question before...." then on and on and on! She couldn't believe that I wanted to know. This is a normal request God know's why she's making another big deal over this. Then to top it off after Zombie Waitress tells me the Dead Hippie burger is the bee's knees, I taste it.....it isn't. I would describe it as slightly better than McDonalds, I could have made a more tasty burger at home, it was nothing special. I would rate Honest Burger much, much higher than this. My other friend who had the same burger didn't rate it either, so as far as I'm concerned the Hippie should stay dead. I've based this review on my experiences with the relentlessly annoying waitress and the fact that the food wasn't great. Although I didn't like the food I'm sure other people would have a better experience especially if they don't encounter Zombie Waitress, but beware she may sneak up behind and then you life truly won't be worth living! read more

The pace of new restaurant openings in Islington has been so fast that I am far behind on checking them out, so when my friends were eager to make plans to go out in Islington I was more than happy to come up with a few ideas. This location of the Meatliquor brand has only been open a few months, but I've been to its sister restaurant Meatmission a while back, and it's fairly well known for good burgers and a very happening bar scene. On this occasion, we only organized on Saturday afternoon to get together that same evening, so the no-reservations policy helped, though the wait was approximately one hour and we were seated at 9 PM. They won't put your name on the list until all members of the party have arrived. Luckily, the bar makes the wait very bearable, and I had a number of the Vedett cans of beer before the 3 of us were seated in a comfortable booth. My friends are far more experienced Meatliquor veterans than I am, and they recommended the Dead Hippie burger, which has 2 patties, a special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, and minced onions. I thought it really resembled an In-N-Out Animal Style. We also got the buffalo wings, fried pickles, chili cheese fries, and deep fried mac n cheese. I liked that the buffalo wings sauce was not too spicy, but my favourite was the fried pickles with their incredible batter. You don't really notice the pickles! The chili cheese fries were not all that impressive in my opinion, and the mac n cheese was interesting, especially with the marinara sauce, but did not leave me craving more. I thought it was hilarious that the salad section was called "rabbit food." I think the only other thing I would have liked to order would be the onion rings, as I feel they would have the same incredible batter as the pickles. I think this place is a really good fit for the Islington scene. It's not directly on Upper Street, but the Meatliquor brand has such a strong following that people will come anyway. And the bar scene is really fun and I would not be surprised to end up here just for a few drinks. The decorations are really something else - there are a few rows of old school TVs right above the kitchen screening something too hard to make out, and the bathroom area is blacklight with neon graffiti all over the place. It just screams out a vibe that it's where young 20 somethings like to go to hang out. The open kitchen is so open that you can't help but glance right down it when you enter the restaurant on your way to reception. I do wish the bar area could be expanded a bit, as right now it's everyone piled into one corner, but I feel like the place will do just fine. read more

Is London sick of the gourmet burger? Can we take more greasy, calorie laden American junk food of hot dogs and cheesy chips? YES says LFM! (Who is eating for 2 at the moment and pretends this is an excuse to consume 1500 calories in one dish). LFM was left in charge of organising a large, group gathering of 15 people (and 5 babies/toddlers) on Upper St, Islington. The perfect place was Meat Liquor - Not wallet breaking, casual and they take reservations! We were lucky to be blessed with sunny weather and the staff placed our rowdy group in the outside courtyard. Not plush, more alleyway stylee but perfect to let the toddlers roam around. The burgers were extremely tasty and moist (although we have to say Patty and Bun win the gold medal for burgers in our opinion). Give the mac 'n' cheese croquettes a miss (bit stodgy). This was the first time I tried MEATliquor and it lives up to the hype. It's not a crowded place, and I immediately loved that about it. Just like the other Meatliquors, the atmosphere is dark and grungy looking, which completely betrays the fact that it has amazing food. I ordered a Dead Hippie burger (their signature dish) and the patties were positively dripping with juice. The burger looks small but don't be fooled - it's a whopper of a meal and before you know it you'll be patting your belly in utter satisfaction. If you want great burgers and sides, at great value in an unpretentious environment, there is a Five Guys literally three minutes down the road. If you want to pay nearly a tenner for a burger little larger than your palm, with what looks like Kraft sliced cheese on it which immediately gets lost, hard, sharp, flavourless matchstick fries, half an onion-sized onion rings (double bonus this as the acres of slimy limp onion makes more surface area for the grease-filled, soggy batter), a waiter who is going to tell you that Budvar (which he presumes you've never heard of) is aged 102 days or some other tedious marketing spiel - all served in a middle aged ad exec's idea of edgy decor (think the combination of everything he thinks is cool about Rancid and INXS, combined with Laser Quest in a derelict church - oh not to mention the 80s wall of TVs and the general feeling of being in Duran Duran's Wild Boyz video) - then this is the place for you. The burger was not terrible - but it was small and the sides were not good. If you discount the latter entirely, then the trip cost £20 for an ok small burger and a pint of lager. You hype a brand, people get excited, then you roll it out and milk it for a few years on dwindling cost and quality. This is what London's mid-market restaurant business looks like now.
