You go in and let the person at the desk know why you're there, and she gives you a beeper/pager like at restaurants. Obviously people are there for different reasons as people who came in behind me were called before me. Finally, the representative buzzed me and we went to his cubicle where he explained what they do, which is provide resources and help for job seekers. They have computers, fax, printers, copiers, and all kinds of help for people looking for a job. They have grants for people that want to go back to school, and so many resources to help people looking for work. For me, he sat down and navigated my page on the Work in Texas website to make sure I had everything updated for my best opportunity at finding a job. It was good information, as I actually had a few issues with the website, and he showed me how to fix them. They offer job fairs, and on Tuesdays they have resume and interview help as well. I may go to these if I'm still unemployed just to make sure I'm doing everything I need to be doing. I was impressed. I figured it'd be a big waste of time, but he gave me some tips, and some help, and I even applied to a job I found on their website earlier, so who knows? I have had health issues since having a couple of strokes and one of the things that affect me is my short term memory. Thankfully I'd always gotten automated reminder texts in addition to appointment cards...until recently. I'd ended up in the hospital and upon my release ended up having to go BACK two days later thanks to Covid-19 and then ended up under quarantine (the first time was due to my ongoing issues). My appointment was during this time..and I did not get a reminder. My account was charged $50. I called and was told by the guy at the desk in a rather rude manner that the automated texts are a "courtesy" and that they were staying open despite the stay at home order. I was then transferred to the billing department and was told that the money would be refunded within 3-5 business days. Well it wasn't and thanks to all this I'm overdrawn on my account with no money coming in thanks to the current situation. I called today and got the answering machine. #1, I don't appreciate being lied to about the refund. #2, I really don't like the way I was talked to when I called...arrogant with a complete lack of compassion. Not the first time the guy was like that with me either. The shame of all this is the fact that people who come here do so because they are struggling with things internally. This is the LAST thing any client needs. The crazy part is, the last time I was here I saw another client getting into it with someone at the desk about a similar situation.
