It opened originally across the street in 1955 by conscientious objector Roy Kepler. He had ties to and thought along the same lines as Lawrence Ferlinghetti, the founder of City Lights Books in San Francisco. She feels like a warm lovable character from your favorite book, the kind you reach for every now and then to read over and over again. I called recently because I really wanted to get my hands on a copy of Nikita Gill's new book "Hekate" and yes, I know I could just order it online from big box stores but I knew I wanted to support my local bookstore. Renee was quick and prompt and while she didn't have it in stock, she ordered it as quick as she could and I was able to go pick it up in the next day or so! Great prices for used books and I don't mind paying full-price for new ones since it's important to support indie bookstores instead of billion-dollar corporations. The selection targeted elementary and middle school age but I also found a good amount for my preschooler. If I was only buying for age 1-4 I don't think I'd fill up a box (mainly because they were almost all paperback and thin) but anything older and you will find plenty. There's a center display right inside the front door with staff selections and new books. What they don't have in volume, they make up with a curated selection, and nice little tags with book descriptions. Bob was an older gentleman who worked here until he recently passed. He also sometimes worked in the Livermore store. Like many men, I got a lot of books here based on his recommendations for history. After chatting with me just a couple times, he recognized me when I came in the store, and steered me towards something I could not resist. I'll miss him very much. It's a very compacted place to go to and I don't know if we're allowed to go up stairs since I didn't see anyone up there. Also, you can see all of like the very old ones at the very top, but you probably have to ask the staff if you can get one. Also, they're less than a decade away to celebrate their 100th anniversary since they opened in 1935. Now I see why they had older books. They probably never renovated this much for decades, but that's what makes this bookstore unique!
