It is large enough that each daughter is able to find her place academically, socially, spiritually, athletically and is able to develop a healthy sense of self. MB is unique in that the Quaker values provide a calming, quiet powerful start to their day and help to build a partnership with their teachers. Our world is changing fast and we feel that Moses Brown is focused on the world that our girls will thrive in bc of their experiences and problem solving skills. No school is perfect but from our experience we feel that MB partners with us as parents to help mentor our kids to be the best they can be, to help make the world around them a better place and to feel Confident in their abilities. It is a challenging school but large enough to accommodate different learning styles. When there are tough issues that arise the faculty addresses them immediately. They show deep understanding of their students' individual needs and consistently treat them all with immense care and compassion. My children adore all three of their teachers. While the warm, caring environment is where ESNS shines in our eyes, the way they teach students is also remarkable. Many schools learn through play on paper, many learn to play in action as well, and do a great job of "tricking" kids into learning. Somehow though, ESNS tricks me, too. I rarely see the academics happening and suddenly my child comes home and knows how to write his name and his brother is telling me which two words rhyme. Their learning through authentic play, wholesome approach to teaching critical social-emotional skills, and opportunity for students to build advocacy and have choice are among the many reasons East Side Nursery School has been so fantastic for our family.

This morning, as I was dropping off my two grandchildren for preschool the parking lot was flooded and in order to avoid the children getting their feet wet, the teachers had the parents and grandparents pull up to the sidewalk and they physically stepped into water and picked the kids up out of the vehicles and carried them in. This saved the kids from having wet feet, socks and shoes for the day and I thought it was incredible that they actually took the time to do such a kind gesture for the kids. Here's why: 1: location - I'm a 5 min drive away from home/15 min walk and 10 min drive from work. It matters. A lot! Carrying 3+ bags everyday: purse, lunch, pump, diaper bag, big baby in carrier, you know sometimes I stop home first to drop it off before picking him up, and I still hate getting up early, and babies make you late to everything, so it's good to be close. (Little after the Thayer/Hope Split- parking is on the street, so not great, but always find a spot) 2: great staff: even as technical co-employees, I had never been to the site prior to needing childcare, I had just met the director. But being there as a mom, it doesn't matter if we work for the same org or not, I want a great, safe, caring place for my kid- which this place is at every turn. I've been a Y girl for 14+ years all around New England, so I knew there were good odds, that's what we do, but not everywhere is great honestly. However, the director and the infant staff are fantastic (I haven't met the toddler or preschool staff yet) 3. Cloth diapers: yes, I'm that girl with the cloth diapers and the glass bottles. I knew that I wanted a school that practiced the Montessori philosophy with fidelity as it aligns with everything I have learned as best practices in my years of Orton-Gillingham training and graduate education in literacy development. The teachers at Montessori Children's House have the level of knowledge and expertise that I aspire to, and they are masters at their craft in every sense of the word. As a parent, I have seen how my five-year-old--who had been a reluctant learner--has learned how to read words, sentences, and books and write in cursive. She has been completing addition and subtraction problems with four-digit numbers as well as multiplication equations. She has learned about continents, countries, and cultures, with regular presentations on specific holidays such as Diwali in India, St. Lucia's Day in Sweden, St. Nicholas Day in Denmark, the Lunar New Year in China, Purim, Holi, and the Bengali New Year delivered by class parents to name a few. My child has held a snake and eventually, the snake's babies, while also caring for guinea pigs and raising chicks and butterflies. She studies Spanish vocabulary, creative movement, sewing, weaving, and painting. While this school offers a phenomenal academic education, the lessons they offer in grace and courtesy, executive functioning skills like planning, organization, goal setting, sustained focus and attention, and self-management (tenets that are built into the Montessori approach) are invaluable. I know in my heart of hearts, as an educator, that this type of education could have impacted my own students' lives greatly, and it has been one of the greatest opportunities that I have been able to give to my child; I know that this school is setting her up for academic, social, and emotional success long-term. Perhaps my favorite aspect of this school, however, is the tight-knit community that we have here. My child has made friends with children who are kind, curious, imaginative, joyful, and from countries all around the world. The parents are equally kind, curious, and joyful, and we have enjoyed many school events at local parks conversing and nurturing our children together.
