Visalia Airport - Has nothing to do with the airport, but this area is really beautiful to fly around.

No exception here, greeted warmly and assistance for ground transportation promptly arranged. I love the fact that our small company has a plane and pilot available- I may never fly commercial again. No TSA, no wait, no screaming kids, no person next to me hogging the arm rest. Spoiled, appropriate for a princess such as myself

We were told that the Holiday Inn was the closest place to eat, but they were closed. There were no options close enough to walk to. We inquired about a crew car. One of the linemen decided that simply telling us they didn't have a crew car wasn't informative enough, so he explained that having a crew car placed the FBO in a position of incurring liability if we had an accident. I didn't mind the lecture nearly as much as I minded the tone. Stuck with the vending machines, I asked if they could break a $20. I was told they could not, which seems shortsighted to me if you are an FBO with travelers coming through and your only food option is the vending machines. The other pilot had a few singles and deposited them into the vending machine. It registered the credit, but did not dispense any items when the button was pushed. The credit disappeared. He tried again with the same results. When he asked for a refund at the desk, he was told they couldn't give him a refund. We left hungry, but didn't miss that there were Del Taco bags of food on the linemen's desk. If these guys worked half as hard at solving problems as they did at dodging them, this review would be completely different.

Porterville Airport is a nice little place, which seems like it was once a small military base…read moreduring WWII. I was practicing my flying skills and decided to go eat there with a friend (who also happened to be my instructor). We landed on a well maintained runway and taxied over to the public parking area. When we got out of the plane, we were only a 2 minute walk from the café there. The café was a really neat place for those of us who love aviation. There are plenty of plane models, pictures and art work to keep the mind occupied while awaiting food. I ordered basic diner fare (chicken fingers) and my friend got a cheeseburger. The food was great and a fair price. Service was great and I could tell it was a local place filled with local people. Free advice: Look for those places and you won't be disappointed. After lunch, we strolled 2 minutes back out to the tarmac, jumped in the plane, and off we went. I was really happy and impressed with Porterville Airport, and I think I'll drop by there again next time I'm out flying around the valley enjoying the day. All the above being said, it was clear to me that the restaurant is a hidden jewel. We were the only plane parked outside, so I'm sure the majority of the folks eating there were not flying. I want to encourage you to stop in, since it can also be reached by driving your car there. Next time you are in Porterville, give the regular fast food a rest and try something better. Go to the airport and have a fun and yummy meal at a place packed with aviation and local history.
