This is a super cool hidden gem in Isleton. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It proudly advertised itself as a former Chinese opium den and brothel, and they kept the theming so quite a unique spot.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]There's Chinese decor inside and even a seating area designed as the opium den![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]When we came here on a Sunday afternoon there was a live band playing.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] There's beer on tap and also various other canned drinks in the fridges you can pick out and take to go. read more

Roughly 2 years later and this bar still owns. Great selection (a little of something for everyone, not just tons of bitter beers or tons of sweet or tons of sour, a very balanced menu!), nice outdoor area, great ambiance, well-kept bathroom, great bands on Sundays, and, while we're not from Isleton, the regulars always seem friendly and the bartenders still recognize us. read more

Hidden gem with an opium den. Huff said... But really, this place is one of a kind in all the right ways. Tucked away in what feels like an old Chinese camp ghost town lives a beer bar with an opium den, a constantly rotating tap list, addictive popcorn, and an owner just as fun as the vibe this place has. Other beer bars need to come here and take note. This is how you do it. This place might MIGHT just put Isleton on the map as a must see beer destination. Dog friendly to boot! read more

If you like funky out of the way bars with great beer, you need to stop here. They don't have good (other than popcorn) but they allow you to bring it in. There are a few raised tables and seating at the bar. read more

I've been here 3 times now. My bride and I are borderline beer snobs, only I love IPA, she hates them, but loves sours and I hate them. This is without question the best tap room in the Bay Area. Without a doubt. No TVs, no WiFi, no BS, just cold taps and the company you keep. Shared 4 flights with my bride, sandwiches from the McBoodery, and lost at cribbage. Iva is awesome and deserves all the credit for creating such an epic spot. read more

So was recommended by the pizza parlor on town to check this place out for drinks and I will say it did not disappoint. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance of an old school brothel just makes it that much cooler to sit inside and drink up.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The service was great they also let us sample a few different flavors of beers they had on tap before buying. A hidden gem in the Delta! I'm so glad we were directed here by the owner of an antique store in Locke. It did not disappoint! Since it was formerly a gambling/opium den and brothel, the decor fits the theme. Really hip and nicely decorated with a lot of reds and blacks (sort of reminded me of Yelp's website). The bar is from the movie Basic Instinct and the owner turned an altar table into a working tap tower. Really nice touches everywhere! The beer selection is on point - everything from IPA milkshakes to dank brews to smooth porters. I also like that they offer Nitro coffee and kombucha, which I bookended my beers with. Best of all, Iva, the owner/bartender/purchaser is knowledgeable and friendly, instantly making you feel at home. There's free popcorn and a refrigerator in the back stocked with interesting canned brews you can take on your trip down the Delta. Definitely a place to check out when you're in the area!!! read more

Great place!!!! We were staying in town and had planned on visiting this beer room. So glad we did! Iva is wonderful and welcoming and very personable! Nick was as well. Iva is very knowledgeable with the products she offers( and she offers quite a few!) and myself not being much of a beer connoisseur she offered samplings of a few things to try. I loved the elderberry kombucha and raspberry kombucha mixed with Nitro Cali cream. Imagine a 50/50 bar/ creamsicle......Yum!!!! We met some very nice people there who live in town and offered suggestions on where to go and what to see. We definitely hope to be back. Thanks Iva!! read more

I was DD so I didn't drink any beer, but I enjoyed their non-alcoholic kombucha on tap...I don't remember the name, but it was from Marin County and pleasantly reminiscent of...gummy bears? I love this place!!! The ambiance and vibes are always top tier, especially when they have live music on Sundays! Also very friendly customer service! I was in last with my cousin celebrating her birthday and the gentleman serving was so nice, he gave her a beer on the house. We were pleasantly surprised. This place is a great stop in the area. It really impressive, with 24 taps! They range from mostly California brewed beers, with a few from Colorado. There's a good mix of darker beers to lighter items. They also serve brewed nitro coffee and kombucha. I chatted with Iva a bit about the history of the building and why she named the place she did - It's quite interesting! I love that she kept with a lot of the Chinese touches. The drive to Isleton is scenic and relaxing. We stopped at the Mei Wah beer room to buy a particular beer we had at the AAPI festival event in Sacramento. We had a couple of tasty beers while chatting with the owner. The owner is super nice, kind, friendly and engaged with all the customers. The selection of beers on tap is big and diverse. The ambiance is chill/relaxed, great seating inside and outside. 10/10, would highly suggest folks to check out the beer room and explore the historic town and learn its history. Awesome beer place! 23 beers on tap, great variety. Even had a nonalcoholic kombucha, Coke or Diet Coke for my kid and was dog friendly. Freshly popped popcorn available. Awesome place. My boyfriend and I were exploring the Delta and found this spot. Turns out, it's relatively fresh and breathing some new life into this area. We chatted with the awesome owner who was super friendly and welcoming. Great beer selection. Cute beer glasses for sale too! They sell some beef jerky here but you are encouraged to order food from a BBQ joint down the street. Wonderful decor and so apropos considering this place used to be an actual opium den (according to the owner). A definite must if you're in the area. read more

History

Established in 2017.

The Mei Wah Building was originally a Chinese Gambling Hall, Brothel, and Opium Den in historic downtown Isleton. Today the Mei Wah Beer Room draws on the past with its very own antique opium bed that has been turned into a seating area. The entry way dons hundreds of vintage photos of Opium Dens, Isleton, and people drinking beer from the 1800's on. We feature a one of a kind cast iron 24 tap draft tower on top of a Chinese altar from the 1800's. The Retro Diner Counter was built for the 1992 movie Basic Instinct with Sharon Stone and Michael Douglass. Mei Wah can mean beautiful place and we think you will find just that!

We pulled up and parked on the narrow little street and walked into this well-known place with the smell of garlic French bread wafting into the air and locals sitting at the bar. We were taken into a small back dining area and given the menu. I ordered the infamous steak sandwich, while my sister ordered the Al's burger, and my husband ordered the fish tacos. The plates were quickly brought out to us and were very generous portions. The steak sandwich was so tasty and big, I was only able to eat about a fourth of it along with the delicious onion rings that came with it. My husband demolished the 3 fish tacos and french fries, and my sister managed to eat about half of her burger. We will definitely be back.

My favorite spot to hang out with strangers and friends talking about whatever comes to mind. Absolute chill vibe.

They are definitely a place of entertainment and a place where friendships can be created. They do have a kitchen on site with the menu as well as a bar. Currently, I think they are open from Tuesday through Saturdays and closed on Sundays and Mondays. And I feel that changes throughout the seasons.

MWBR is a great place to hang out with a cool one. There are 20+ beers on tap, mostly local and regional. MWBR is in historic Chinatown in Isleton. The building has an interesting history. The owners have done good job of restoring the building. MWBR does not serve food but there are several eateries near by and several customers brought food from them. The only reason it's 4 not 5 is the Room didn't have AC. Will definitely stop by for a beer again. Open Thursday-Sunday read more

Wonderful new taproom in Isleton with a terrific selection of crafted beer. Iva helps you pick out what you order and there are many free samples to make sure you are happy. Some rice lagers too. It's a beautifully decorated historic building in Isleton with an asian inspired atmosphere and an opium bed to die for. There is a great bar-b-que place down the street and many people order there and bring into Mei Wah to eat at the counter and drink great beer. Go! read more

love this place, it will make a beer drinker out of everyone but for the sober folks there is cold nitro and delicious craft Kombucha. Lovely place. Have some bbq home made from 2 doors down from Marvin and Shondra at Yes My Sweet bbq. The bar itself is a classic 65-foot bar that feels like it belongs in another era. For food, I had the Caesar salad, and we split the ten-inch pepperoni pizza. The pizza featured roni cups and felt like a solid, classic appetizer-style pizza . The side Caesar salad was a great portion with crisp lettuce, shaved Parmigiana, and crunchy croutons, simple and tasty. Foster's Bighorn offers a Chop House style menu for lunch and dinner, making it a great spot for a quick bite or a full sit down dinner. I'd absolutely go back: first for the nostalgia, second for the drinks, and third for the food. It's a one-of-a-kind place that feels like stepping into history while enjoying a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.

The two gentlemen sitting next to us were there from work and it was their first time as well. They were pipe fitters and they were staying at adjacent hotel, they were going to give us a ride home. For no reason at all about 10 Cowboys hats came our direction and threatened all four of us. We were backed up against the wall as they all stood up and walked over our direction. My friend and I got up and walked around, my friend kept saying this is horrible. We didn't do anything wrong. We keep asking the bartender what's going on why is this happening ??? My friend asked some guy are you just gonna let these guys jump us? The bartender said she was shutting it down told us that we needed to go around and get out of here from the back.. we called 911,four times!!! and no one showed up. We feared for our lives, fortunately one of the locals told us to sit by him and not move and assisted in getting a stranger to drive us all the way back to our hotel. We were so worried about the other two men who did absolutely nothing and were getting punked by the local hillbillies. We have no idea whatever happened to the two guys. We ended up going to their hotel and explaining in case they didn't show up from work the next day. I highly recommend that no one attends this bar unless you live in that neighborhood and know everybody; it's clear Lodi people should be NOT be recommending it. It's a safety concern at this point.
