Excellent quality service!…read more I've been here for eye appointments four times now to clear up a very bad eye infection after I was referred to them by my primary care physician's office. My regular optometrist (who is also quite good) was not capable of either getting me in last minute, nor was he equipped to treat the infection. The doctor that I saw (Dr. Mullinex) was excellent and got to the bottom of the problem immediately. It was serious and required treatment that nearly led to surgery, but it was eradicated very quickly. I'm so happy they were able to squeeze me in last minute. Not for nothing, MEI is expensive and my insurance co-pays per visit were still $30 apiece, but they definitely are worth every penny. I would recommend them to anyone.

What was even more frustrating was the billing. I paid in full when I picked up my contacts and glasses. About a month later, I received a bill for an additional amount. When I called to ask about it, I was told, "Sorry, you received that bill in error. Please disregard it." Then, six months after my original service, I received another bill stating that I owed an additional $60. In my opinion, this is extremely poor billing and customer service. If I pay my bill in full at the time of service and am later told that an additional bill was sent in error, I should not have to worry about receiving another unexpected charge months later. Based on my experience, I would recommend comparing prices and considering other optical providers before choosing Michigan Eye Institute.

I first met Dr. Waters in June of 2025 after I had been diagnosed by my optometrist with…read moreAge-related Macular Degeneration. My family doctor, believing that an ophthalmologist is the most knowledgeable about eye diseases, recommended that I make an appointment with Dr. Waters, so I did. I left his office that day in June feeling relieved that my AMD was in the beginning stages and that there was little risk of me losing my sight. In the following months, the vision in my left eye was an ongoing issue. It felt like it was not working with my right eye, sometimes affecting my balance. My optometrist had diagnosed me with early-stage cataracts needing monitoring but not surgery yet, and he believed my dry eyes were causing my left-eye trouble. I thought that perhaps it was the AMD and returned to Dr. Waters. That's when he told me I did not have AMD and that it was the cataracts causing my problem. Surprised by this, I asked, "So you mean I can tell people I do NOT have macular degeneration?" He replied with a "yes," and I believed him. He even told me I did not need to take AREDS 2, the vitamin that slows the progress of AMD. He said they were "overkill." Wow! What a relief! Next came the cataract surgery. After a discussion with him and one of his assistants, I felt confident that the Premium Lens Implant Symfony was my best option. I looked forward to no longer needing reading glasses, but, unfortunately, that was not to be. While the surgery in my right eye, my good one, went well, the left eye continued to give me the same problem. Next came the laser treatment in the left eye. No difference. Then came a second laser treatment in the left eye. Still, the words I read were always blurred without my reading glasses. His next recommendation was a laser treatment in my right eye and then Lasik surgery in my left one. I became alarmed at this point. In addition to what the insurance company had covered, I had already paid him $4,954.40, and I honestly could not see any better than the first time I saw him. I made an appointment with an ophthalmologist at U of M Kellog Eye Center and another with my optometrist. Both doctors retested me and agreed that I absolutely do have AMD and that it is worse in my left eye. Both also agreed that any further laser treatments or Lasik surgery would NOT be a good idea and that the lens in my left eye was probably not a good choice. I cannot understand how a doctor with Dr. Waters' experience could misdiagnose AMD and advise me the way he did. I feel that he endangered my vision and took advantage of me financially. I have lost not only a lot of money but also my trust in and respect for him.

*** BEWARE: FRONT DESK STAFF IS UNPROFESSIONAL AND MALE EMPLOYEE IS AGGRESSIVE AND CONFRONTATIONAL…read more**** I would leave 0 stars if I could! The front desk staff is extremely unprofessional, they will continue their own personal conversations at their desk while customers are waiting in their lobby to be seen. I have attempted to call their business number for two months straight leaving multiple voicemails to schedule an appointment, they do not answer their phones during business hours and they do not return calls or messages. The employees that work their front desk are incredibly rude, they blame their lack of professionalism on personal problems that have occurred outside of work that have nothing to do with the business. The front desk staff will misquote your services, HIGHLY UNETHICAL. I was told an exam was one price and when I retuned just a few months later to schedule, the same employee told me it was $10 more than what was previously discussed. After asking the employees why I hadn't received a call back after attempting to get ahold of staff for scheduling for TWO months, the employee insisted I was lying and requested to see my cellphone call logs to prove that I had actually called their business number business. While visibly upset over the experience I was receiving from the employees at the front desk, they laughed in my face and told me to leave. While sitting in the lobby waiting to speak to the doctor that owns the practice after receiving such terrible service from the front desk staff, the staff continue to speak at me discussing their person problems out loud. Once the doctor came out to speak to me, he laughed at me while I was expressing how upset this experience made me. The doctor denied my experiences, even while having proof of my attempts at contact and the staff openly admitting to changing the pricing on me. The doctor then told me he will not continue to see me as a patient. Once the doctor dismissed me from his office, a male employee RAN AT ME with AGGRESSION while I stood in their doorway! Stating to hit him! Would not recommend to anyone that values their time, money, safety or peace! This place offers nothing of value and I left being threatened!
