Towed Vanagon to Trujillo who gave me an honest assessment. Trujillo is an honest mechanic. His mechanic, Hugo, was top-notch as well. They were able to diagnose a broken rear transaxle, fixed it and got us back on the road at a reasonable and fair price. Trujillo and his wife were lovely. (And to be fair Sergio seemed to be a bit boggled by the issue I brought him but he still went ahead and did a repair...) Fast forward a few months and the issue still persisted, and the transmission ended up not shifting into other gears, so I ended up taking it to a specialty transmission shop yesterday (03.18.2026). All in all I would recommend this shop but maybe just for simple repairs and nothing too out of the ordinary since they do not specialize in any particular area of autos. *Also, it would've been better if they just said that they dont or wont touch the transmission. Unfortunately the repair that was done here may have ultimately damaged the internals because of lack of knowledge with this vehicle. *On another note, I called the number provided on Yelp (and also what I had saved on my phone) and another "Sergio" answered claiming to be a car wash person and he was confused on how I got "his" number. If they did change the number they should disclose it on Yelp so others wont call the wrong person/ repair shop. (Number I called was 805.483.7901 as it shows on Google and Yelp.) This is not to bash anyone, im simply stating that if a shop is not knowledgable on a particular vehicle they (the shop) can choose to offer the client an alternative shop instead of taking on work they cant fulfill or diagnose correctly. In all these years, I only had to bring my car back once, and it turned out the issue was completely unrelated to the original repair. One experience that really stood out happened years ago when my car key broke off in the trunk lock. A mobile locksmith quoted me $250 to remove the broken piece and make a new key. Instead, I took the car to Sergio's. Chava came out with a small tool, removed the broken key in less than five minutes, and had me on my way. He didn't charge me a dime. That kind of honesty, professionalism, and customer service is hard to find these days, which is why I continue to trust Sergio's with my vehicles.

I was hoping to drop my van off to get it fixed and Uber to Universal. In LA I called a few shops and got a few different estimates. Over the phone I was quoted $600.00 and the person on the phone didn't even ask what kind of vehicle I had. When I called AAA they sent me to Fisher/Martin automotive which was 1 hour and 15 minutes from where I was. I was so upset I didn't understand why I had to go so far for a repair. Dropped off my car on a Monday and get a call on Tuesday saying they figured out the problem. Said it was electrical but didn't really explain what was wrong with it and quoted me $680. Told them I couldn't do that price and he says it usually cost $800 anywhere else. I tell him that I'd be picking up the car soon. Take an uber to the shop to pick the car up and they are closed for an hour on lunch. Fine, I wait around since I do not want to waste more money on uber. When the mechanic finally arrives after lunch I ask him what exactly is wrong with the car. He proceeds to vaguely tell me the car is old and that the wiring is messed up and it keeps blowing the fuse. I then ask him if he did in fact change the fuse, said he did. I take the car to auto zone and find the blown fuse and replace it. Solved the problem, no more issues, hasn't blown the fuse since. SO THIS SHOP TRIED TO CHARGE ME $680 FOR A BLOWN FUSE. For those of you who know nothing about cars, please get a second opinion or do some research online before paying these people.

I brought my nearly new 2025 Toyota GR86 to Asian AutoTech of Ventura for a routine oil change. I…read moredid not report any suspension issues, unusual tire wear, noises, vibrations, or handling concerns. The car was driving perfectly fine, and I simply wanted basic maintenance performed. To my surprise, I left being told that my front struts were showing signs of leaking and that suspension repairs might be needed. Hearing that a nearly new vehicle may have suspension problems is concerning, especially when there were zero symptoms leading up to the visit. Wanting a second opinion, I took the car to a Toyota dealership for an inspection. After a full evaluation, the dealership found no leaking struts, no suspension defects, and no abnormalities requiring repair. That discrepancy raises an obvious question: how does a car go from allegedly needing suspension repairs at one shop to having a clean bill of health from a Toyota dealership? The GR86 is not your average commuter car, and its suspension setup is more specialized than what many general repair shops work with daily. In my case, the car is also not driven hard or abused. It's used normally, with no track use, no canyon driving habits, and no aggressive treatment that would reasonably point toward premature suspension wear. It's also worth noting that summer performance tires naturally wear faster than standard all-season tires, and can sometimes show uneven wear patterns due to the factory negative camber built into the suspension geometry. That alone is not necessarily an indicator of a mechanical issue. While I can't say exactly what led to the diagnosis, the experience left me questioning whether there was enough familiarity with this platform to accurately distinguish normal characteristics from actual mechanical issues. I understand that mistakes can happen in any shop. However, when a routine oil change turns into warnings of major repairs, especially on a nearly new vehicle that another inspection cannot confirm, it's hard to feel confident in the accuracy of those findings. Based on my experience, I would strongly recommend getting a second opinion before authorizing expensive repairs. What should have been a simple oil change instead created unnecessary stress, wasted time, and a loss of trust in the inspection process.
