Driving by and decided to try it out. It's absolutely amazing! Chile Verde, home made tortillas! Chicken enchiladas! Rice is some of the most flavorful rice I've had. This is my second time trying mela's the first time I visited was awesome food, their little tacos were bomb and chili Verde burrito was bomb, I and husband went there I suggested we go being he has never been there and told him the food was delicious..We'll we were highly disappointed! This is a down market, side of the road Mexican diner. Run and frequented by the locals. They don't need Yelp, they are doing just fine with the locals pumping in as I saw on this Sunday afternoon. There was barely a table to be had when we came in near 1pm. Great choice of all the classics. In fact you'll find (live) dinner out on the property just behind the old house that serves as the kitchen and dining room. The best single thing here is the food, otherwise it is more modest and for some it won't be "a dining experience". The bathrooms definitely cost them a point. The service was just ok. My dish the Chili Verde was one of the best plates of Chili Verde I had ever had. The pork was amazing no gristle, or fat, just lean tenderloin and the green sauce was as piquant and fresh tasting as anything I have ever had. WOW- 5 stars for that. My wife's chili rellenos were a bit too cheesy for my taste. Overall a good experience on the rellenos, but no spice on those rellenos, and a bit stringy on the pepper but that's hard to regulate. It comes with a very nice homemade salsa that is 4 star spicy. All the dishes do. You will not get tortilla chips here unless you ask, but the food plates are very big. Drink wise - Beer, sodas by the bottle and can are what you get. Many south of the border options exist here. Would I come back for this country mexican excellence. Absolutely. I would not return to this establishment. Unfortunately my husband and I did not receive the good friendly services others received . We also observed another young lady get the cold shoulder. The worst service ever, I went on sunday October 22, 2023 they were super pack . It was sad they kept us waiting for close to two hours. They kept telling ppl to come in. At the end the gave us a seat they were four ppl the just got there and they gave them a seat not only that they served them before us. I order one birria one menudo and a menudo to go. The lady came back and told me there wasn't any more menudo. When they just serve menudo to the other ppl the just recently got there. After that I told her that was not fair so she went inside the kitchen an a lady came out not only yelling also accusing us of cutting the line. N saying if we say the name outside Mela's that bcs she was the the owner and it was name after her . All we had told her that it was not fair n her statements weren't the truth. I found the way she acted unprofessional , and unethical. Since we had been customers there for a long time we end up going to casa de alma in lomarica we paid less n the food was excellent not only that they treat u like if you were home. It doesn't look like much from the outside (or the inside, to be honest), but the food is delicious. My husband had tried it once before when passing through and said they had some of the best tortillas he's ever eaten in the US, so of course he wanted to stop so I could try it. I ordered a chile relleno and my husband ordered the molcajete. We didn't order anything for our (young) kids because the lady said the molcajete was a lot of food. She was right. The molcajete is huge. It comes with cheese, nopal, chicken, beef, and shrimp as well as rice, beans, and tortillas. It's more than enough to feed a very hungry couple of adults or a small family! We had enough leftovers in our takeout box for a whole other meal. The chile relleno was also wonderful. We will definitely be going here again the next time we are in the area, and now we know that one molcajete is all we need. With such wonderful food, why did I knock a star off? Well, the menu consists of pictures on the wall without prices. Prices should be posted, especially considering the accusations in some of the other reviews. We were a little surprised at the check, but since the food was so good, we accepted it. They obviously cater mostly to Mexican immigrants, but I did not feel discriminated against at all as a white person like some other reviewers claim, though I do speak fluent Spanish and was with my Mexican husband, so who knows. We stopped here on the way home from an errand. We live in Folsom so Mela's is an hour and 40 minutes from us. It's a total "hole in the wall" so we thought it might just be great. We had no idea... in the middle of his first bite, my husband said "I would drive here just for this food!" The restaurant is very modest in decor and atmosphere. The staff was very friendly; the food a standout. They don't serve chips and salsa, thank goodness because I would have been too full to finish my meal. My husband had a cheese quesadilla and a shrimp burrito. He loved both. I tasted the shrimp from his burrito which were plump, grilled perfectly, tender, and succulent. I ordered the Chicken verde plate (spicy and full of flavor) which came with rice, beans, hot sauce, and the best homemade corn tortillas! They were so good I thought they were flour tortillas at first as the corn is ground so fine you can't really tell the difference until you take a bite.
