At one point between 2010-2012, (I have forgotten the exact year), I arrived at Dr. Melki's office, as a first time patient, when it was discovered I had a badly detached retina. I went in under an emergency Appointment in the afternoon and was operated on/lasered late that night, an operation that went past midnight. All of this managed by he and his staff to make happen quickly. If I was not treated quickly I would have certainly lost vision in the bad eye within a few days. The typical symptoms have been mentioned here, but in my case the retina detachment had advanced to the point where there was actually like a "curtain effect" being lowered over my eye. The surgery turned out to take much longer than original thought, as it was described to my wife as a "giant tear, of the retina. As of today 2025, at my recent yearly followup, the retina repair, after all these years mind you, is still holding" I have not needed to have a 2nd repair done, which is a testament to the skills Dr Melki is gifted with. Flashes in my peripheral vision led me to my ophthalmologist who then sent me to Dr. Melki as he is the best retina specialist in the area. The first time I was seen I had tears in my retina & needed immediate laser procedures. Dr. Melki & his staff were incredible. From the front office, to each doctor/tech/PA along the way, I knew I was being tended to by the best. While my eye saga is extensive, here's what I've learned & want to share: 1) Dr. Melki & Dr. Yee took incredible care of me & saved my sight! I wound up a long term patient as both my eyes suffered critical issues, and when the "less than 5% of patients" incur specific complications from a procedure, that is me... the 5%. Dr. Melki never let me down. And even when a routine check up turned into a critical problem again, Dr. Melki pushed heaven & earth to get me into John's Hopkins for surgery since he was leaving town that morning on vacation. 2) If you don't like your eyes being burned by lasers, then you might want to bring along some good pain killers or anti anxiety meds. The docs can only give you eye drops to numb you a bit, but I needed MUCH more than that for many of my visits. I kept a bottle of meds with me and I'm glad I did as I needed to use it on several occasions. 3) If nothing else, you are reading this because you have eye issues. USE MOISTURE DROPS in your eyes. No matter how old you are, especially if you suffer from dry eyes, USE DROPS MULTIPLE TIMES A DAY. This is something I wish I knew years ago as it might have prevented some of my problems. 4) If you notice "floaters" or anything resembling white flashes of light or black spaghetti, GO TO Dr. Melki RIGHT AWAY!!! These are all signs of deterioration of your vitreous or retina & you need a great doctor who knows what he is doing!!!! 5) Whenever possible, have someone drive you to these visits. Between laser procedures & dilating my eyes regularly, you DO NOT want to drive after your visit. You can, but trust me, you'll much prefer a friend or relative taking good care of you!! Lastly, do NOT schedule something for an hour or two after when you think your appointment will be over! Between being dilated and the aftermath should they have to do a procedure on your eye(s) you do not want to have to go off to something else on your schedule. Good luck!!!! read more

I've suffered with posterior vitreous detachment in my left eye for over 2 years which created severely disruptive floaters. My peripheral vision was simply gone. 3 doctor's, domestic and abroad, told me to just deal with the floaters and they'd bother me less over time. They were so wrong. Not only did I not get used to the floaters, the disruption disrupted every single day. It was like looking through a rainy window....all the time. Ophthalmologists are reluctant to treat floaters. Few have invested in the expensive technology that maps eye floaters for proper diagnosis. And then one fine day I met Dr. Melki! Dr. Melki has sophisticated technology that clearly depicts the magnitude of floaters. Instead of speculating whether the case is severe or not; Dr. Melki's technology removes the guesswork. Within a month of consultation, Dr. Melki successfully performed vitrectomy surgery on my left eye. It's completely restored my vision. My peripheral vision is completely restored. It's hard to explain the difference, but it truly is life changing. I couldn't be more satisfied with the result. The surgery itself was performed under local anesthesia and took about an hour. The most painful part of the surgery was the COVID-19 screening, which is to say I experienced no pain whatsoever during the procedure. I'd rate the pain as a 1 on a scale of 10. Dr. Melki was in no rush during the surgery. The care was superb. I've carefully followed post surgery instructions and have healed quickly. I sleep with a patch over my left eye at night to prevent scratches. I take drops daily; however most drops are required for only one week after surgery. Within 2 weeks, I'll be completely healed with greatly improved clarity and acuity. If you've been suffering with floaters and have been told nothing can be done; don't believe it. After two laser surgeries to repair a torn retina, I suffered a bleed in the eye. In the space of about 30 minutes to an hour, the vision in my right eye was like looking through a glass of dirty water. So frightening. Dr. Melki's excellent staff, especially Kabas who understood how frightened I was and got my vitrectomy surgery scheduled for the next day. I understand now that the bleed was not due to a detached retina, and in a sense was not an absolute emergency. At the time however, I was just terrified. Thank you for fixing my eye. I went to see Dr Melki with vision issues with my left eye. Upon examining my eye, Dr Melki informed my that if I do not have almost immediate surgery, I could lose my vision in the eye since it was detached. He attempted to make arrangements to have the surgery that day at a hospital but was not able to schedule it - the next morning he performed the surgery successfully, It is now two years and the vision in my left eye is great and I have Dr Melki to thank for this. I had surgery for a macular pucker in August 2019. I didn't really know what to expect so I thought I would leave a review to help others. Dr. Melki was wonderful. His office staff is competent and friendly. I had the surgery at Suburban Hospital. The anesthesiologist was exceptional. He explained that I would be "put under" for 5 minutes while Dr. Melki prepared my eye (this included a local anesthetic). The remainder of the surgery, I was conscious but in a very very relaxed state with no pain and no worries. When the surgery was over and the anesthesia was discontinued, I was coherent immediately. I left recovery within 40 minutes and went home. I had no pain, just a dull headache for a few hours. My eye was covered with a hard eye patch which was removed the following day by Dr. Melki's staff. I could see fine and was driving on the 2nd day post surgery. My vision has continued to improve over the last few months. I am extremely grateful to Dr. Melki for his experienced surgical hands and wonderful personality. I wouldn't consider letting anyone else operate on my eyes! read more

I have Central Serous Retinopathy and Dr. Melki fit me in as an emergency patient to diagnose it. The appointment does take quite a bit of time because your eyes need to be dilated and testing needs to be done, but it is worth it for the correct diagnosis. Dr. Melki performed laser surgery on my eye and a month later I am almost 100% healed. My vision was 20/200 before surgery and is now 20/25 and continuing to improve. I've had a handful of appointments at this office and have waited extensively each time. I highly recommend Dr. Toufic Melki, as he is an excellent ophthalmologist and retina specialist. In May 2014, I was having partially blocked vision in my right eye. My optometrist cited Dr. Melki as the retina expert in the DC area. Given the urgency, Dr. Melki agreed to see me right away, even though I did not have an appointment. He explained that I had a detached retina and that surgery was needed right away to save my vision in the right eye. He rearranged his busy schedule in order to perform surgery that afternoon. The next day, a Saturday, he called me at home to remove the eyepatch while I was on the phone with him so he could explain everything he did during surgery, as well as how to administer the multiple eyedrops needed for recovery. There were multiple follow-ups over the next few days, weeks and months and my eyesight improved to 20/25 vision, better than before the surgery. Fast forward to 2017, and I had a similar experience with my left eye. After experiencing similar blocked vision, I called Dr. Melki's office and he agreed to see me that same day. Similarly, he performed surgery that afternoon and recovery went well. Because of the gas bubble used during surgery, he warned me that I would probably need cataract surgery sometime this year. Sure enough, a cataract had formed in the left eye and I had surgery in June by a cataract surgeon in the area. During that recovery, I noticed my vision was actually getting worse and I was concerned that the cataract surgery had failed. I decided to see Dr. Melki again, as I felt he could give me a second opinion of the cataract surgery, as well as make sure the retina was OK. Unfortunately, because of all of the trauma to my left eye in a short period of time, a macular pucker had formed in the center of my retina, distorting my vision. He explained this condition in detail, and made a recommendation for another surgery to remove the thin cellular layer that had formed. That surgery was also a success and four months later, my optometrist just told me I have 20/20 vision in that eye. Not only did Dr. Melki save the vision in both of my eyes, my overall eyesight is much better than it was four years ago. I really don't even need glasses now, except to read. Not only is he a very good retina specialist and surgeon, but he is very personable and easy to talk to and understand. Because I have seen him so much over the past four years, when I have a follow-up appointment, it's like visiting a friend. I would also like to highlight his very professional, and hard-working staff. They are always friendly and responsive to the patient's needs. The office sees a lot of patients every day, and the staff tries to keep the flow of patients moving quickly and efficiently. Sometimes this is not an easy task when some patients need more time with the doctor or for treatment than originally allotted. He has a very calm demeanor which helped me a lot during my emergency retinal eye surgery. His staff is the same way. They are very cordial and prompt on all of my requests. You can tell that he loves doing surgeries, and treating patients. He is very caring. Once he found out a patient's 90th birthday was that day, he told his staff to get the patient a little gift. Love Dr. Melki. His regular appointments sometime can be a little long (about 2 hrs), with the dilation of the eyes and all, I usually take half day off from work just to be safe.
