I needed a haircut badly and from the prices that I was getting quoted around the city, it was a bit of a sticker shock outside of this salon. A friend of mine mentioned this place to me and said that they do a great job and it's inexpensive where long hair is $25. There was a bit of a wait on a Sunday afternoon, but two people ahead of me chose to leave, so I ended up being next. There's was only a limited staff of a two person crew. One who was washing hair and the other cutting the hair. They are hard workers, told me that they have been at this location for 20 years and live right upstairs. Calls were coming in nonstop and the hairdresser, Jenny said that since she lives right upstairs her hours were flexible. Still strong and better than ever! Jenny is amazing! I came for a haircut but since it was a quiet evening, I inquired about curling my hair and possibly coloring it too. Jenny told me it was the perfect night because she only had one client left. Even though she closes around 7pm, Jenny gave me a perm in 2 hours and used henna to color my hair in 30-45 mins. I left after 9-9:15pm. Jenny & her husband does everything with so much love and consideration for your welfare, thinking about what's best for you and your hair. This salon is basic. Jenny definitely know how to cut hair and the prices are unbeatable. One complaint is that I noticed they reuse hair towels and wraps between customers/days. For example, I see the husband washing off hair dye on plastic wraps and let it air dry. I don't need the shampoo/treatment/scalp massage/styling so I'd prefer a time-efficient and accurate cut from someone who knows what they're doing. My hair is fine and straight, and generally pretty easy for most stylists to work with, so I don't know how this place does with more textured hair or doing other services. I was able to get a same-day appointment with Jenny and though I did have to wait 45 minutes after my appointment time for her to finish with another client, my time spent in the chair was about 30 minutes for a simple long bob (no layers). It's a 4* haircut in reality (there was a tiny bit of unevenness if I really scrutinized) but the fact that the cut is $10, Jenny is so nice, and I'm not sitting in a salon chair forever adds an extra star for me. Jenny is super sweet and really works hard. Everyone I've seen her talk to has always been treated well. This is my go-to place in Elmhurst for no frills haircut. I've not been particularly picky with my hair (typically get an undercut) these past years so some unevenness and choppy sections (see picture to be your own judge) that I've gotten with my cuts don't bother me too much. If you're very particular with your hair and want extreme precision, you may or may not have a good experience. It's neither upscale or luxurious but rather somewhat old-fashioned and homey. The haircuts here are very affordable ($8 for my short hair, a few dollars more for longer hair) so do tip well! My haircuts previously in Brooklyn would be 3x that price! I haven't had the chance to do a hair wash but I've heard it's also quite totally and worth it since there's added head massages which are great tension relievers (gotta make sure to tip here to)! If you're going on a weekend, I would recommend calling in advance to get an idea of the wait. I've been coming here for years. Jenny is great and her staff is attentive. I do recommend always calling ahead to check how long is the wait times on the weekends cause it could get pretty busy even post COVID-19. Can be bit of a wait if you're in a rush (45minutes+) I highly recommend going during the weekdays cause it's not so busy. I worked yesterday nearby and I decided to go to the salón to ask for info. And indeed, it is only $10 for a haircut! $12-$14 if you want to receive a shampoo wash and a blowout. I decided to stay and wait even though it was full. I sat and I waited for an hour, true, but in that hour Jenny did haircuts for about 15 people that were before me. She is really fast! She apologized for making me wait and asked me how I wanted my haircut. I said very short. She was surprised because I had very long hair and asked me why I wanted it so short, verified with me that I truly wanted like that. She even showed me a picture to verify for all the means that was what I really wanted. After I confirmed, she started cutting my hair. She does it with so much care and expertise! She was even asking me every move and giving me options for my new style. I heard her asking the same to the other women before me. "This much is fine?" "Do you want me to cut it more?" She makes sure that you are really getting. the haircut you want and she wants you to leave happy with the result. She is sweet and thoughtful, characteristics that I highly appreciate it because in the past I have had bad experiences where I got something completely different from what I wanted. She also speaks great English, Mandarin, and Cantonese, and I see a diverse clientele every time I visit. Needed a quick touch up so I got a wash and cut and was charged 15$ plus I gave $5 tip to Jenny who cut my hair and $5 to the one who washed my hair. One thing you should know before going here, it's not your fancy salon that plays music with modern decor. However, the work is efficient and affordable which is what I prefer in salons. I developed a habit of coloring at home and going for a trim maybe once a year or so because of past traumas where I've paid good money and the trim I wanted ended up being a cut more than I asked for, terrible bleach/dye, or overpriced for a mediocre job. I've tried high end salons, to other neighborhood salons and never found a place I was satisfied with or even recommend. That's until this place and Jenny! I made a mid-week appointment in the morning because I like to avoid crowds and I had the salon to myself. I'm not sure if there are any other workers as there were I think 6-8 chairs in total but I was the only customer at that time and Jenny was cutting my hair. Her husband was at the front and they were so nice and accommodating! She shampoo'd my hair for about 10-15 mins with scalp massage which was sooooo relaxing and she used this japanese conditioner on my hair that just smelled devine. She was talking to me throughout the whole process, learning about me and the style I prefer. Once in the chair, she checked with me how much to cut and asked for my consent when making suggestions with layers. She has been in business for a long time and you can tell she loves what she does. Their prices are beyond reasonable and Jenny and her husband alone will have me coming back to support their business. I had my hair trimmed by her and she talked a good game of all the wonderful color she could do for me and gave me her contact info. i go to contact her and she doesn't even rem from a few days ago and tells me to go through her salon instead that they have her " schedule " I book an appointment weeks out . I work a lot and trying to get my hair done before leaving out of town. She calls me freaking out while I'm getting ready to leave and they are asking me to get there earlier and I live 50 mins away in other town. You can hear in her voice that they haven't given her enough time and book more people. When she was doing my hair, she talks to you and makes a conversation; she also compliments you and asks you which would you prefer (ex: scissor or razor to thin out hair). Great atmosphere. Overall, I paid 25$. 18$ for hair cut and 7$ tip for two individuals (Jenny and the man who washed my hair). I was happy and pleased with the service, therefore I gave a generous (in my opinion) tip. Read some great reviews, so I decided to try this place out. It's a few blocks off the Grand Ave. M/R station, so a bit of a hike, but not bad. It's on the second floor above a restaurant (there are stairs on the side) and rather small, but for a second floor establishment it's an okay size. I called ahead of time and they said that I could come in at 6:45 in the evening, but I ended up arriving at 7. This is listed as their closing time, but the owner, Jenny, let me wait even though there were other customers waiting. I ended up waiting 40 minutes, but Jenny was super apologetic and explained that since I had come on a holiday weekday, she was working the salon alone and had more customers than usual. I personally didn't mind the wait, but I would suggest going early in the morning on a regular weekday. Once I got in the chair, I showed Jenny a picture of what I wanted: a shoulder-grazing bob. I had hair maybe halfway down my back that was barely layered and quite damaged. My split ends had split ends; that's how bad it was. I had wanted length a little longer than the picture, but Jenny explained to me that my hair wouldn't fall the same way in the picture if she cut any less, so I went with her suggestion. And that's what sets Jenny apart from most hairdressers, I would think: she gives you what you want, but also gives her own input to make sure that your hair behaves the way you want it to. She actually explains to you why she does what she's doing while she cuts your hair, so it's nice to hear that instead of complete silence like I usually did at my last hairdresser. Haircut prices start at $10 here; mine was $15 since Jenny lopped off at least 6 inches of length and my hair's thicker than most. Fabulous price, fabulous service! I tipped $5 because of the great service AND Jenny stayed an hour past closing time just for her last few customers. She's truly fantastic. I also asked how much it would cost to get my hair colored here, and Jenny said $35, since my hair is thick and I've never had my hair colored before. I went there last month after an outing. I actually found this place through Yelp (so thank you everyone). It was a bit hard to find, as some houses looked just like the picture in the reviews. Luckily with a bit of reading I was able to find my way inside. I waited a little bit but it wasn't too long. With the time of the wash and cut, I was in and out an hour, which is the normal time for haircuts in my experience. The washer was very nice and efficient. She massaged my scalp and even gave me a slight back massage (a nice surprise). I was able to get a chair with Jenny. She asked me what kind of hairstyle I wanted and luckily I remembered to bring a picture of my old hairstyle. She quickly went to work and every so often would ask me to take a look in the mirror and see if I liked what was looking back at me. I had no complaints, she really cut my hair well. She also did it in a way that I was able to part it both on the left and right and it wouldn't look out of shape. I have been going here for a few years now. It's not that far from where I live and is quite a nice long walk. You'll have to go up the stairs, but this place is worth it because it's affordable and you will be satisfied with your cut. First of all it is a UNISEX Salon. I've seen men come here looking from "ehh" to "hello there". Jenny has cut my hair. I even had her color my hair a few times and when I was on a budget she would let me know the cost before doing it. I trust her with my hair so much that when I was looking to change up my look I told her what I wanted while she listens and ask a few questions to clarify before doing the procedure. Throughout the process she will let you know what she will be doing. The one time I changed up my look via cutting my hair so that I had bangs, Jenny was very attentive to how I wanted it and I came out of there so happy with my new look. Everyone to this day still says that is their favorite haircut on me. Also, the wash here feels great. For hair wash, cut, and blow dry the cost can range from $10-15+ depending on the length of your hair. Most of my haircuts used to cost $30+ in other salons, which this salon has truly saved me a lot. P.S. I came here to see Jenny because of all the great reviews. I have long thick straight hair and was in desperate need of layers and thinning. I called ahead to make an appointment but pretty sure she just mainly works on walk-ins. There were two ladies ahead of me in line but my wait was only about 30 min. As for the cut she did a fairly decent job. I didn't need my hair washed nor did I need to see it styled. I did ask her to blend out some of the layers which she was happy to do. Once I got home and straightened out my hair it looked great. I had only paid $10 for my cut which is unheard of. I tipped her $10. You have to go up the stairs to find this place, so I was a bit confused where it was actually located at first. It's a little cramped inside and a small, but to my luck, not busy on a Sunday. I waited for half an hour for my turn for just a haircut, because there was a woman getting her hair permed. Melody kept apologizing to me for waiting so long, but it's a hair salon. I knew this was going to happen. She had given me a magazine while I was waiting to browse through. I picked out a hairstyle, and she proceeded to carry it out after asking me how I wanted my side bangs to be cut, as well as if I wanted to layer the back like the picture showed. Like the reviews before, Melody explains why she is doing what she does, and cuts accordingly. She even explained to me how I should take care of my hair to keep the style that I had picked out. I just moved to this neighborhood and was looking for a good hair salon when I stumbled upon this place on Yelp; its stellar reviews are well-deserved and now I totally get why! There are many places on Broadway that charge $45-60 just for a dye job on shoulder length hair, but here, it was only $35 and Jenny (the owner) did an incredible job! I went on a weekend so it was pretty packed but Jenny kept me busy with books on colors and different styles (week days are much better though, less hectic; when I walked in, there were 4-5 people getting different things done). She spent time examining my hair color and even teaching me about how different shades would look on my naturally darker hair. And no one ever notices that my hair is two-toned (bad home dye job), but she immediately did and even made two separate dyes for my hair to look more even, even though honestly, I didn't even notice it much. She was super friendly and asked me a lot about how I wanted my bangs cut, what I was going for, etc. She was patient, kind, and very attentive--hard to find at a place like Elmhurst where there are so many loud and bustling salons all over the place. Went today for the first time to Melody after reading Yelp review. And I gotta say. I love this place. The place itself is located on top of a restaurant, climb up those stairs next to the restaurant and you're welcomed by a standard Asian salon decor (i.e. don't expect a luxurious spa-type). I spoke to the staff in Chinese, but as far as I can tell everyone spoke great English. Hairwash is standard with a little bit of scalp massage. Now the best thing about Melody is the owner herself. She is a sweetheart. She gave me a haircut with my meager explanation (This is what i said: "I want my hair like this *moves hands* and my back layered but keep the same length). And she guessed right away what I wanted, and even took her time to explain to me what I wanted. She also did the same to the lady before me, she explained throughout the entire cut to her what she was doing and why she was doing that. This is the first time I've ever had a stylist ever told me what they're doing. It's great and refreshing. And I don't need to say that I love my hair cut and it's exactly what I wanted. Oh and have I told you her price? $15 for a mid back hair cut!! I've never ever heard of that price before. I'm used to paying $30 and up! Jenny is spectacular. My family have been regular customers for years. She's done perms for my grandmother, haircuts for me, and perms and bleach/dye for my sister. This time, I had called in around 2pm asking Jenny if my sister could come in to get her hair dyed pink. Of course, Jenny needed to take a look at the already dyed/bleached/damaged hair. Let me shed a bit of light on what Jenny had to work with. My sister had her natural black hair grow out at the roots, her red hair had already faded out into an orange hue, and the blonde from her previous hair bleaches were showing. My sister wanted pink hair. After consulting with a hair specialist from another hair salon in the city, she'd said that my sister would need to bleach her hair twice and ideally wait two bleach sessions before my sister could dye her hair the ideal color she wanted. However, my sister already had parts of her hair dyed twice, other parts three times, and some other parts four or seven times. This definitely deterred a lot of salon stylists from further bleaching already brittle hair. Jenny embraced the idea for she had never dyed anyone's hair pink before. Nevertheless, she mixed red and blonde hair dye and went for it. The first mixture was very subtle after applying to my sister's hair, so Jenny added more red to the mixture and reapplied it to my sister's hair the second time which only cost us $10 extra. She did it in the right proportions and attained a pastel pink which was a more subtle and feminine color rather than a punk rock neon pink that you'd get from Manic Panic. Overall, my sister really loved how much time and effort Jenny put in for my sister to get the proper shade. She loved it, and they were both happy that the pink shade had blonde streaks to add depth. This process would normally cost $180+, but Jenny charged us $85 for the process. $95 if you count the second dye mixture application. I highly recommend this salon!
