Glaswegians, your cafes have definitely spoiled me and I can't find anything that compares to this in the U.S. When you walk in, you automatically get this cozy and warm feeling. Try to get a seat in the upstairs dining area, because this is where you will feel the most warmth. I also like sitting in the bar stools by the window because I like looking outside at the rain. If you find yourself waiting for a table, just take that time to browse the pastries, savory foods laid out, and even their selection of cookbooks. Their selection of cake and tarts change daily, but if they have leftovers one day then they serve the leftovers the next day until they are gone, but a lot of the time their pastries sell out on the first day. Bonus to this is that your pastries are definitely fresh! But the pastries still taste good even if they are a day old. Trust me. My go-to pastries were the Belgian Chocolate Cake or the vanilla custard tarts. This cake has hazelnuts inside of it and is served with raspberries, chocolate bits, dusted with sugar on top. If you love chocolate, this cake is the way to go. The vanilla custard tarts reminded me of home (because I would get Egg Tarts at Chinese bakeries and this vanilla custard tart tasted just like a egg tart) The only difference is that the tart at Kember & Jones had flaky layers of crust, which made the tart even better. My go-to drinks are hot chocolate or the Moroccan Fresh Mint Tea. The hot chocolate is served with foam and little chocolate bits on top. The Mint tea is served in a clear glass, but it comes hot (which was weird because I didn't think you would serve hot drinks in a glass) but I understood why because it has a bunch of mint leaves in it that changes the color of the drink to a light tan. It's cute and if you have a sore throat, it will make you feel better. Other things that I have tried and loved were the Warm Waffle (because it was served with syrup and fresh fruit), the French Lemonade (It was pink lemonade with a little bit of sourness), and the macarons (They make different ones each week. Try all of them because they go fast! I have to say during Christmas time their Christmas pudding one tastes pretty good, too.) Last thing to note is that the staff is very nice. I never really feel pushed to leave. They are polite and attentive.

I heard…read morea rumour that they changed the name because people kept asking them who 'An' was... are people really that thick? It's changed a lot since then - physically there seem to be more tables than I remember, and the menu is now a single-page affair of broad-spectrum Scottish fare including meat dishes, whereas before it was a multi-page seafood-only extravaganza. I still fondly remember the shared seafood platter... mmmmm. However, although the menu may have downsized, the quality is still as high as ever. I started with crab spring rolls with a chilli jam dip, which were light and very tasty, followed by a Thai-style seafood medley in coconut sauce, which managed to carry a fair degree of kick without overwhelming the delicate flavours of the fish. Delicious. Herself had scallops to start, which were really fresh and cooked to perfection, and followed this with the lemon sole with salmon mousse. I had been tempted by this, but when it arrived I was quite glad I hadn't picked it as it looked a bit too creamy for my taste. Yet it disappeared without trace so clearly was appreciated! We were both hungry enough to manage a dessert - Herself had a kiwi and mango pavlova that seemed absolutely huge; I went for an intriguing coffee jelly in brandy snap basket with caramel sauce, although I declined the clotted cream option. I wasn't sure about the coffee jelly as it was a very different taste, but maybe it would grow on me over time. Overall, a fantastic meal; good portions, superb presentation, perfectly cooked and generally scrumptious all round. Although it was pretty full when we arrived for the early evening shift, the staff were attentive and helpful at explaining everything on the menu (to my disappointment, it turned out that a 'financier' on the dessert menu had nothing to do with accountants). The chairs are sumptuous and comfortable, although some could do with replacing as the seats are getting a bit on the saggy side; luckily cushions had been provided for those that were a bit too far gone. Oh - and there's a giant pink and yellow raffia giraffe called Felicity in the gent's loo... I have no idea why, but it's quirky and I like it.

We were warmly greeted when we came in and quickly served drinks. I ordered a cappuccino which had lovely foam on top and came with a tasty tablet. My only issue with it was that I didn't find it strong enough, so maybe next time I'll ask for a double shot. They serve all day breakfast. Yep..all day breakfast. Always a winning sign. I also spotted Nachos on the menu, which always makes me happy. Ordered eggs and toast and it definitely hit the spot. The eggs were perfectly seasoned and the buttery toast was yum-city. Best of all...they are dog friendly!! And side note: they have outdoor seating, on a nice day it would be pleasant to sit street side.

I really wanted to like Jelly Hill on Hyndland Road. Having recently moved to the area, I was very…read morehappy to see it was my new local. That was until I visited last weekend and left feeling bitterly disappointed. Now I'll be fair, Jelly Hill is first and foremost a wine bar and my visit was for lunch on a Saturday so I'm probably not seeing the place at its full potential. But my first Jelly Hill experience went like this- My boyfriend and I decided to treat ourselves to lunch so we rocked up at 1pm to a bustling cafe- good sign. When we walked in, we weren't really sure whether to take a seat or head to the counter, and sure enough a member of staff walked past without giving us so much as a smile. We quickly found the only table that was available but we were reluctant to sit there- it was right in the middle of the floor, which was clearly the owner's haphazard attempt to squeeze as much money as possible out of the place; it clearly shouldn't have been there. As we sat down we were blocking the way to the counter on one side, and the fridge where customers collect their ready-made paninis to the other. I literally had someone leaning over my lunch for them to pick out theirs. Now I'll try not to rant about those paninis too much. BUT Jelly Hill has obviously seen the benefits of serving lunch but can't be bothered doing it properly- so they stock a fridge of ready-made paninis for customers to collect and take to the til. I'm in favour of being able to have something savoury when I go for a coffee or drink but they were really over-priced and small in size. Another gimmick which I would advise you against is you can have your tiny panini with a 'lunch plate'- pay an extra pound and have a spoonful of mass produced coleslaw and four or five crisps. No thanks. I enquired about the soup- 'Do you have a vegetarian option?' to 'Well we have a vegetable soup but I think it might have meat stock in it, I'm not sure.' Hmph. Great. In the end we had one Panini, one scone and two smoothies- our bill was over £12. I'll go back to Jelly Hill, but it'll be at night for a stiff drink.

My girlfriend loves the place so I get ask to go a lot and I oblige, but this isn't somewhere I would come with friends or on my own. It has a bar, so it's like a little boozer, it has table service (of sorts) it's like a bar, bistro, cafe type place. The service can be weird at times, sat down before and nobody comes anywhere near you till you approach the bar. At other times they ask you if you're in for drinks or food when you first walk in. What I'm trying to say is they are not very consistent. The food is ok, nothing really to write home about, burgers, pastas, stews, nachos, salads. I've eaten a few times and have never been blown away. Last night I tried their vegetable gumbo for the first time, whole thing tasted of sorrel which made the whole thing a tad acidic, the tomatoes could have done with a pinch of sugar, that would have helped. The garlic bread that was served with it was extremely bland, people need to hit the garlic button, too many places don't go for it with garlic bread. Recently had garlic rye bread in Berlin and it was like being hit in the tongue with garlic bulbs (that's a good thing) St Louis has a really decent beer selection, Williams bros lager and Joker IPA on tap. As well as every William's bottle you can think of. Wine list is also far from shabby. They get a real mix of clientele, oldies, young uns, inbetweeners like me, people drinking, eating, battering into cakes and pastries. Friday and Saturdays they have live music which isn't intrusive and you can still hear your dining, drinking partner. I'm sure I'll be back as I said girlfriend loves it and it's very close to my flat. But as I'm moving soon I can't see myself going out of my way, certainly not for the food. Wish I liked you more ST Louis, they have all the makings to be a great wee... whatever they are. Try it out yourself and see what you think.

I…read morehadn't been a fan of Di Maggio's in the past but having never visited this particular restaurant we thought we'd give it a whirl. Booking was done online via their website & was very simple. We were given a nice booth near the rear of the restaurant which was nice. The interior of the restaurant was very cosy & quite swish looking, nicer than Paperino's I would say. This is most definitely a family-friendly restaurant with what looked like a wee playroom at the back for kids to have fun in whilst the parents get swallyed (probably). Only thing I did think was odd for being such a family-friendly place they didn't have a stand alone changing room, instead there was a changing bench in the (quite wee) Ladies loo. Which meant as I was waiting to use the toilet (there's only 2) I had a wee toddler eyeballing me as the delightful aroma of baby poo filled the air... Mmm.. S'nice. The staff here were all very friendly & efficient. Although they did try to give me a beer I hadn't ordered & also added it to our bill, but they soon made their apologies & it was swiftly taken off as soon as we pointed it out. We ordered from the pre-theatre menu which was £11.95 for 2 courses. For starters I had the Pate stuffed Deep Fried Mushrooms which were really good. My boyfriend had the BBQ Ying Yang Chicken (for a small supplement extra) which were also very tasty. For mains I chose the Di Maggio Pizza which was a pizza with any 4 toppings of your choice. I chose salami, spinach, chilli and extra cheese (because I am a cheese fiend!), my boyfriend had the Calzone. We also ordered French Fries & I was expecting the skinny type of Fries that I LOVE but what we got were just regular sized chips that weren't anything particularly special...not so much French Fries as Scottish Oven Chups. Hmph. My pizza was a bit of a disappointment. The toppings were really nice (lots of fresh baby spinach, yum!) but the base was a let down. It tasted a bit like a shop bought/oven pizza base. Bah. The Calzone was also a let down with not a great or very tasty filling & there also wasn't much in the way of it. Shame. Not wanting to leave on a disappointed note we decided to share a dessert - the Cinnamon Waffles with Maple Syrup & Ice Cream and I also had a coffee (an espresso con panna). The coffee was really good and the Waffles were really really lovely; lots of cinnamon and maple syrup - delicious. They had redeemed themselves with this sweet treat! To sum up our Di Maggio's experience I would say nice surroundings, starters, staff and dessert, shame about the main courses/pizzas and nappy-scented, wee toilets. Would I go back? Probably, but when there's better pizza restaurants in Glasgow I certainly won't be rushing back. If Di Maggio's upped their pizza game then this place would be really good. This place might be great for families but it needs to be more than just a 'good family friendly Scottish-Italian restaurant' to lure in new customers and to make sure folk dine here rather then the new Pizza Express that has recently opened in Paperino's place or other Italian/Pizza restaurants in town.
