It had been a long time, and after a lot of work, I was finally able to bring my son for a hockey game. It was a Sunday afternoon game after Christmas. The Trailblazers were playing Boston (and actually won) just before the puck drop, so the Max was pretty packed. Still better than driving by a long shot. The game was really fun...the first period had two fights...no I am serious, the refs actually let them fight. Usually they come in and break the kids up, but they let them fight. This made my son really happy...he was hoping for this. I gotta admit I was psyked too. I was yelling along with him. The game was really fun. Sadly, the Tri-Cities team tied the game 4-4 with 2.1 seconds left in the 3rd period. Then they pretended like they were playing soccer and rocked the 'Hawks to sleep before blowing by them and scoring the winning goal in Overtime. Oh well. Still super fun and worth the time with my son. #GoHawks read more

It's an old coliseum (to me it's just an "arena"), but a landmark for Portland. Prior to watching a couple of Portland Winterhawks games, I looked up this venue and saw that it's also registered in the National Register of Historic Places, interesting. This arena opened up in 1960, and at the time was considered the largest civic and technological structure in the Pacific Northwest. Later was renamed Veterans Memorial Coliseum in 2011 as a tribute to the veterans of WWII and the Korean War. Fast-forward to today... ~ Parking ~ Parking within the Rose Quarter, shared with the Moda Center, is my recommendation as to 'where to park'. There are two main parking structures, and both require a pre-paid parking QR code upon entry. If you don't have a QR then good luck turning around. Some hotels nearby have designated parking spaces available as well. Which isn't be too bad of a walk, depending. Unfortunately, both the parking structures and hotels use the ParkWhiz app which can be kinda shady. But my recommendation is to still buy pre-paid parking at the Rose Quarter, even though it can cost between $30-$50. Yeah, ridiculous! And purchase asap as spaces run out fast. There's always street parking too, but that's at your own risk. ~ Venue ~ Yes it definitely seems "dated" here, but I expected it. Well maintained for the most part, I'd say. The outside grounds are still getting a facelift, but inside the place wasn't so bad. No issues getting through Security screening. They even have a 'Toyota priority line' if you own a Toyota. Just show them your keys. The concessions are expensive as usual, but again to me, it's just expected with practically every sporting venue everywhere. Along the windows, there were other food vendors like BBQ, popcorn/candy, and Dippin' Dots. I usually do the venue concessions as they serve local beers. ~ Seating / View ~ For the games, I purchased in Section 16 Row L (blue seats) and Section 61 Row B (red seats). The blue seats in the lower section felt newer and OK. Enough cushioning. The red seats were in the higher section, so I think they were a bit older and slightly more crammed then the blue seats. The ushers were helpful, and the rows had big lettering so you can't miss your row. And I feel the seats were angled nicely too. It's true as some yelpers stated, that 'there really isn't a bad seat in the house'. Except maybe the front row of the higher sections. ~ Restroom ~ Again, this place was built in the 60s, so yeah, it's old and crammed in there. The best time to do your thing is during the game unfortunately as there's less traffic. Always long lines between periods or intermission. Honestly, the place really earns between 3 and 4-stars, but there weren't enough annoying negatives for me. The venue is tolerable as I've been to worse. Prices have gone up big-time! So, I might come back only if I feel prices are fair for a particular event. But overall, it's an oldie but goodie! One last note: I'll upgrade this review to a fifth star, only it their website would highlight: The 1992 Tournament of the Americas was held here, it's the qualifying tournament for the Olympic basketball team which premiered the "Dream Team" playing in their first game together! read more

Concessions are awful. Many complain about price, I complain about quality. I purchased their special $12 Hot link and got an inedible and gross plate of mush. An older venue, but not without its charms. We were here for the WFTDA Global Roller Derby Championship and had both upper and lower bowl seats. The view is pretty great from all angles within the space. The seats are comfortable and larger than the ones in many stadiums I've been to. Food is limited at the concession stands and expensive as you'd expect it to be in any similar type of setting. Fortunately, we were able to bring in our empty water bottles and fill them on site. Unfortunately, there were not bottle fillers available and we had to make do with water fountains or bathroom faucets to fill. Staff was friendly and accommodating, but different folks kept directing us to different areas eg I was told by one staff member that my lower bowl pass meant I could sit at floor level then was later told I was in the wrong level by another staff. I watched this exact scenario play out every day of the tournament with multiple people, so clearly staff weren't given very clear direction on what each pass was for. Parking is nice and close to the entrance but getting out can be a ridiculous endeavor, which again, is not uncommon for venues like this. All in all, a pretty great place. read more

When arriving at veterans memorial coliseum there are several parking options. They have limited street parking and a few parking garages. Street parking was full so we parked in the garage across the street which put us back $32 for the evening. The check-in process was streamlined and quick to get us in. There are metal detectors, security, working dogs and several law enforcement present. They have a good amount of food choices, we went with the sizzle pie pizza at $9 a slice and dippin dots ice cream at $8.50 for a small bowel. The bathrooms and facility were clean and they had employees cleaning throughout the show. I would recommend getting their a little early to find your seat and eating beforehand due to the price gouging. read more

So, full transparency, I'm not a fan of huge venues like this... never have been. Similar to my Moda Center review, everything is so overpriced (parking, drinks, food), but I enjoyed my visit because today, my wife and I went to our very first Winterhawks game! It was a fun time (Hall of Fame Night) and it actually was an entertaining game! It ended with OT, a shoot-out, and the Winterhawks victorious! And yes, despite the prices, at least they serve Coca-Cola products! Go, Winterhawks! read more

The only reason to visit this spot is that it really is the perfect setting for haunted attractions during our spooky season. If you want a real horror show - visit the bathroom! It will do in a pinch but definitely drop by the haunt. It does involve a lot of walking around the building and such but well worth it. Just something to be aware of if you have folks with you who do not do well for a long stride. It is pretty flat though if you have ADA situation though. The bathrooms are right before the entrance so they have got you there as well. read more

We came to watch a hockey game, it's been 6 years since we have been and holy crap, inflation is everywhere! The seats we got for 3 were not cheap as I wanted to sit close as I cannot see well, the parking was $30 which was insane and we don't live where we can take public transportation! It really is sad that you can get cheap tickets to a hockey game here if you want, but you definitely can't drive there to keep it affordable if you're on a budget. I was impressed I was able to get a hot dog for $3! That was cheaper than a bottle of water! I just feel for our city and world and how unaffordable it is that really many people probably can't afford to take their family to a hockey game because the night with food and parking was easily $100 and we got 2 pieces of pizza, a hot dog, a sprite and popcorn plus paid for parking. That's not including the $150 seats so I could see well and most of the venue was empty! Thank gosh I have one kid! This won't be a monthly thing sadly though because it's not affordable. All of the staff at the memorial were very nice and helpful though and again $3 for a hot dog is a win so you can eat something! I wish they would allow you to bring in your own water bottle and snacks though or make it more affordable but I get it, it's 2023 and a privilege to be able to go and every single thing in this world has increased significantly in price so I'm sure the inflated prices are due to all of the prices to host an event being inflated and they gotta still make money! First time attending a concert at the VMC. Nice place. Lol I have been to Moda many times, never realized this was next door. Anyway, we saw Greta Van Fleet there. It looks like no matter where your seats are, you'll have a great view. We were in Section 67, Row E. Well it looks older than Moda Center from the outside and everything inside agrees with that. The one thing that was great were the bouncy vinyl seats. Great for spills and seat twerking, which MANY people at Jack Harlow did IN and out of their seats. Now for the bad-sheesh. While there isn't garbage everywhere, there is an odor. And the bathrooms smell BAD. There was a hand written sign between the 4 sinks saying "Caution, water is VERY hot." So MAYBE fix that so someone doesn't get burned?? Like common sense...where is it? The acoustics are okay but it's definitely old in every way. And the worst part was it was HOT. In the bathroom the air didn't move AT ALL and it was even worse for the moment you're in the stall. Sheesh not a fan. I would go to see the Winterhawks play but at least the ice has to help with the temperature right?! read more

Nostalgia is the first thing that comes to mind. The glass palace! Home of the Portland Winterhawks! This is a good sized venue for WHL Hockey! Plenty of seats and almost all of them within god view of the ice. Seats are old and a little cramped, but comfortable at the same time. This is a dated facility with some noted upgrades. I recently went here to see Disney on Ice. It was a perfect setup for this type of event. Regardless of where you sat, you had a good view. Was hopeful there would be some open seats for some social distancing in the era of covid, but not so much. And an event with kids singing, snack eating, and just being kids, keeping masks on for the entire show is a stretch. They did check for vaccination status upon entering (although did not ensure the name on the vaccination card matched drivers license). Snack options were typical but pricy. About $11 for a beer. I think popcorn was $9. The amount of marketing was crazy. Stand after stand selling Disney paraphernalia! Parking was fine. I had reserved parking in the east west garage with my ticket purchase. A group of four of us came to watch the Winterhawks on Sunday. We were able to find free street parking and walked over so did not have to pay the $16ish for garage parking. It also helped that there was no trailblazer game going on. The main complaint I have was with the lines to getting into the entrance. There was no clear direction or signage that told us what lines were for who so we ended up spending our time being in line for a "no bag line" when 2 of us had bags. When we shifted over, they told us to move again which we did but then later they realized that the second line that we were in was totally fine to be in with bags. This was frustrating and we ended up walking in late and missing the first goal which happened in the first 30s of play. There was a good variety of concessions and ofc everything is overpriced but I liked the deal on the hot dogs which were $3 each. I LOVED the seats that we got. I read online that people recommended sitting halfway up the second section, we sat in section 69 row L and it was an amazing view of the rink. The stadium is smaller than other large hockey stadiums I've been to so all of the action was very easy to see. The crowd standing up and chanting whenever the winterhawks scored a goal was fun as well. read more

Lots of firsts in here for me: 1980 - First Portland Winterhawks game. Still going to the games. Go Hawks! 1983 - First US junior hockey team to win the Memorial Cup 1984 - First live concert - Van Halen 1984 tour. Sat at the opposite side of the stage. Didn't care. I was breathing the same air as rock legends! Regarding the poor reviews on the Yelp, I can only imagine they are trying to compare the VMC to the Moda Center next door. Nothing wrong with the Moda Center, its a nice facility. As I primarily visit the VMC for hockey, its a perfect place for it and really has a nostalgic feel to it. For the 2021/2022 season, the Portland Winterhawks are the primary occupant and it shows. Lots of Winterhawks signage and posters line the interior. There is a fresh coat of paint on everything. The old Memorial Coliseum, wow what memories you bring. Van Halen on the 5150 tour being one of my fondest.... Sitting with Kevin Duckworth and my best friend Kevan (R.I.P.) watching the Fred Meyer challenge another. This building has a ton of character and charm and is also gifted with a ton of history. Great place to watch a show or game, but certainly not one of the state of the art facilities we all know and appreciate now. Hadn't been to the Coliseum in years. However I came last night for the mighty JUDAS PRIEST! The heavy metal community was out in full force and I decided to join the hordes of people clad in Denim & Leather to raise my fist high. Ok my journey starts outside with the religious protester not happy with tonight's head-banging crowd filing in. Of coarse it's a photo opp so see photos. Now security is moving people swiftly through the various security measures while be exceptionally polite. I make it through and enter the arena and man it looked the same I couldn't believe it. Finding a bathroom was a challenge but I survived and made my way down to my front row seat. First The Black Star Riders came on and Mr Scott Gorum of Thin Lizzy tossed me a pick ( Thank Brother I appreciate it ) then Saxon melted my mind next and after one last set change JUDAS PRIEST hit the stage and rocked for 18 songs of blistering metal classics and a few new ones. Managed to obtain 3 Judas Priest guitar picks so thanks and what an amazing show. I must say this old building keeps the old memory's alive and well and is creating new ones also! My Son and I have seen 2 Portland Winterhawks game here and enjoyed both experiences. This WHL franchise sure draws some enthusiastic fans who follow a group of young athletes who someday may become NHL stars. And last night's "Teddy Bear Toss" was both meaningful and a lot of fun. The arena itself is a bit dated in terms of seats, concessions, and restrooms. It was the Blazer's home before they moved over the the more modern Moda (which itself may not meet current NBA luxury revenue standards), but makes a fine minor league hockey venue. As with Moda (next door), it's easy to find a parking spot a few blocks away (if you arrive early enough) and the associated walk is reasonable. read more

The prices are absolutely obscene. After paying for event tickets, we were charged $19 for a parking space in a massive garage with absolutely no signs directing us to the venue. We merged with a group of other lost event-goers and wandered the parking lots until we found someone who could point us in the right direction. The sign-less-ness continued right up to the door of the coliseum. Once inside, we laughed out loud at what they were asking for nothing-special nachos ($10.50), cotton candy ($8.50), and a single can of basic-brand beer ($8.50). Disgusting, greedy, money-grubbing corporate behavior. I truly felt they were taking advantage of the families there with multiple children, excited to show their kids a good time. We saw Disney On Ice (Frozen & Encanto) here on 11/11/23 and had a blast. Great venue! A few complaints - definitely outdated. The bathrooms are tiny and can cause claustrophobia. The food was so expensive ($9 for one pepperoni slice of pizza and $9 for one coke bottle). Parking was fine and everything else was just fine. We enjoyed our day there despite the prices and long lines in the bathrooms. Definitely will be back for more! read more

I hadn't been here since the 1970's when the Blazers played here. It was fun going back in time a bit. We bought several pairs of tickets to the Portland Winterhawks and went to some games there. It's a lot smaller than the Moda Center but a great venue for these games. The food their is limited so my recommendation is eat before you go as not all of the vendors listed on the web are open for Winterhawks games. Also, if you are over 6 foot tall. This venue is not going to be friendly for you. I am just barely that height and I don't really fit in the seat think really budget airlines. The last time I went it was chiropractor/massage time afterwards. I will be back but I'll likely be standing more than most. read more

I went to V.M.C on Saturday the 18th for Grupo frontera. As a mom of 5 these days are next to never so i was extremely excited. I looked forward to this for months. Well the people behind me made sure to ruin the night. Immediately complained about me standing & dancing. I went up once to speak to staff to ask if I was allowed to be standing. There they were complaining yet again against me. She said yes your allowed to stand & dance. I continued my night. As they continued to complain against me. They were talking crap the entire time. I ignored them as much as I could. Until I was assaulted by one of the men in there party. He spit at me 5× called me a stupid B for not sitting down. Tried to swing at me but was held back by his party. I told security they said they would monitor the situation. That I was free to go back. They relocated the man & his group to different seats. 20 minutes went by when I being told by security to come with them. They said they had several complaints against me. That I was bumping into people being disruptive & getting into fights. If youve been to V.M.C there is no space in between seats of course i was bumping into people everyone does. Disruptive by singing & dancing. Screaming when the band saying where all the beautiful ladys at. Fighting because im defending myself from a man. Security gave zero f%cks to hear my side or even take into account my friend word. They made there mind up & treated me as the problem. Escorted me out like i was the aggressor. While the man who assaulted me got to continue his night. I left crying hurt by the injustice. Saddened by missing out a once in a life time event. Pissed off with all the money i lost. Hoping to get my refund but I highly doubt it. There was one security woman who apologized & said I'm so sorry there doing this to you & gave me a hug. That I appreciated so much I needed that hug. I know what my answer is supposed to be when a diehard Winterhawks fan asks, "Where is your favorite place to watch a game?" But, I can't bring myself to say the Memorial Coliseum. While I know it is the historic (and current) home of the team, and the first place I saw them play 15+ years ago, it is no Rose Garden. I've been a partial season ticket holder for several years and see about 90% of the games in the Rose Garden, which is pretty ideal. Every time I go to "Veterans" Memorial Coliseum (the current name), even though I have fantastic seats, the experience is never in the same league. And the truly sad part is that this is after a recent renovation. The Memorial Coliseum is a 12,000 seat arena and was also the first home to the Trailblazers before the Rose Garden was built in 1995. In addition to ice hockey, I've attended a number of different events here over the years: Rose City Rollers, Rose Festival Parade and perhaps a monster truck rally or two. The amenities are just basic: bathrooms, seating, concessions. And from a hockey fan's perspective, everything is scaled back at this venue. The biggest negatives are dreadful acoustics (it is sort of like listening to an adult talking in a Peanuts cartoon... wah wah wah wah wah?) and the lack of a functional big screen. In the Rose Garden you can see the action while it is happening on the opposite side of the rink because they are always covering the game, have instant replay, and lots of fun zooming in on the crowd during breaks in the action (dancing, the Kiss Cam, etc.). Even the Rosebuds are usually MIA at the VMC. At different times they've tried to demolish the structure for a variety of purposes, but local veterans and historians had it added to the National Register of Historic Places and so it lives. There is no attached garage, no suites and only half of the concessions booths are typically open, which means long lines during the games. What can I say? I miss my creature comforts. read more

Portland's minor league hockey team The Winterhawks play in the Vets Coliseum. I tend to prefer seeing them play in this venue instead of the Moda Center. It is quite a bit smaller and I feel that there isn't really a bad seat in the house. They have even upgraded their old ghetto scoreboard to something respectable. The Winterhawks team store can be found inside the Coliseum to the right of the main entrance. Great place to pick up some gear to support the Hawks. The Vets Coliseum also occasionally has other events like concerts. My husband and I had floor tickets for a show here and I was pretty impressed. I was able to see the stage and the sound was also petty good. Again, better than the Moda Center because it is more intimate. Like any other large event venue, the alcohol is really pricy. I was happy to see that they had a couple different hard ciders. If you are a hockey fan, or are interested in checking out your first game, I would recommend going to a game here vs. the Moda Center. read more

It might be time to say goodbye to this Portland "landmark". Besides knowing that the Beatles played here might be the only thing keeping this out dated coliseum standing. Oh and the winter hawks.. Restrooms are limited, the concession stands are poorly placed, the lighting will give you a migrane headache and the acoustics bounce off the back of the building and it's unbalanced. The only advice, if you're going to see a live musical performance is to sit as close to the stage as possible, and on the floor level. The size of the seats are for small thin folks. Portland deserves a great new venue for music. So, lets tip a glass and say goodnight. read more

I pretty much only come here for Winterhawk games, which frankly I prefer to watch in the Moda Center. Even with the fancy new screen, it still just is....old. The bathrooms are outdated, the kiosks are outdated, it...is...outdated. The only positive is that there isn't a bad seat in the house. They've stepped it up with some more beer selections and *gasp* accepting cards. But...no. Time has passed by the Vet and without some serious rebuild, it's probably time to let this lady rest. read more

Flew in from the Bay Area to catch The 1975 and the sounds and acoustics were great! Would come back to see another show here if a favorite band or artist of mine was playing. read more

Major kudos to whoever runs and owns this place. I'm sure they were mighty generous to the people who run Compassion Connect. I don't know the details, but I bet the Coliseum was rented for a song. Every year Compassion Connect hosts a Free Medical Dental Clinic at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Needy people can come and enjoy a bounty of food and many many services. If you need a haircut or job counseling . . . . . you name it. I volunteered my services as a Dental Hygienist for the day. it's an amazing and rewarding experience. Sadly, I didn't see a hint of this amazing event on the daily news. I look forward to next years clinic at the Coliseum. read more

Went to see the winter hawks here seats are a bit cramped on the red side but you keep to the blue side and you'll be just fine!

Ok so there is Memorial Coliseum which is the venue for Winterhawks Hockey, home shows and environmentally protected seating for the Rose Festival Parade and then there is the MOST IMPORTANT part of this building which is the MEMORIAL to VETERANS located on the ground floor. 5 Stars for the memorial. Parking for just about any event here is $10 which is way to much money but then again Mayor Wheeler has allowed camping in the area so the garages allow a little extra security for your vehicle. The coliseum is a "gun free zone" if you have a pocket knife or even a CCW be prepared to be turned away from the security checkpoint. Outside food and drink is not allowed. So much for taking in a half filled 16 ounce bottled water. Today for the home show (08192018) a bottled water was not allowed past the security checkpoint complete with hand wands and a walk thru metal detector. There was a person literally yelling out that no knives were allowed and to take them back to your car. There were no announcements for law abiding CCW holders. Good news for LEOS... Both the Coliseum and Moda allow access with Id. Flag down a security supervisor and they will take care of you. Ok venue for Winterhawks. After fifty years of holding events it is high time that this place goes away. The costs of concessions is one that is consistent with a facility that is less than 20 years old. The staff is far more like wardens than they are concerned with actually making this a nice place to go. Almost like they got the short end of the stick and had to work the weekend. We participated in a state cheer competition. Why this needs to be held in a dump like this is beyond me. Quite honestly this whole event would be better held at the Salem Pavillion where the food is better, cheaper and flavorful. Parking is more plentiful and seven dollars cheaper. Little more than a 1/3 of this facility is even being used. Rather than destroying perfectly good parks and making giant asses of themselves how about holding the occupies here. After spending a short time here, they will all go home peacefully as they feel they have been wronged for being forced to stay at MC! read more

HORRIBLE. they made me THROW AWAY my WHOLE purse because if i went to put it in my car they would not let me back in because "no reentry". nothing was really in it except for what was allowed in, it was a PURSE. personal belonging. the manager said i could throw it away or leave and not come back. all of the staff had the worst attitudes and after the show i went to look in the trash to get my purse back and some other woman claiming to be a manager was VERY rude about why i couldn't get my bag back. read more

We been here several times over years, the venue is fine really, our complaint is the extremely salted popcorn. It's the worst ever, we had it five years ago, same thing, extreme salt. So we gave it another try, same thing. Unless you love salt do yourself a favor and don't bother!!! read more

The sound system is garbage. I'm certain they have not updated the speakers since it was built in 1961. Therefore it is a complete racket that they market and sell tickets to major musical events/concerts. I'm sure it serves it's purpose for amateur hockey or high school graduation ceremonies, but it is not equipped for a major concert. do not waste your money. read more

Clean .. ac and lots of food stands!! Even drinking Sat in here for a conference for hours it was very pleasant. Outside there's a lot of scenery too!! I drank the lemonade drink too bad they didn't have real limes all they had was lime syrup but the lemon they use for the lemonade is real yum. read more
