It was so fun to watch the Winterhawks play! Energetic, exciting, fast and furious lol. The mascot is so cute and funny - I wish it was more present for more time. The facility is nicely maintained. Clean, easy to navigate and have nice bathrooms. There are also special events. We were lucky that the Winterhawks scored more than 4 points and that granted everyone a free chicken sandwich at Chick-fil-A. read more

I haven't been to a hockey game since the Fresno Grizzlies were popular, and I had quite forget how entertaining they are. The game, the fights the food. What's not to love. The games last about 2 hours. Plenty of food options. 2/$10 hotdogs to loaded nachos they are reasonably priced compared to most venues. $5 for a can of soda:( BOO! But hey if you don't want to pay those prices you can bring a water bottle and fill for free at the water station. We will try and attend more games. read more

GO HAWKS! I had a fantastic time at the winter Hawks game. The new upgrades to the Colosseum are great. I use a Mobility scooter to get around and before the upgrades there were really no seating available. They now have these small bar tops around the arena that are about 15 to 20 feet in length and you just pull up to them and park. It was so wonderful. The only drawback were the restrooms. They renovated those as well, but they are 10 times harder to get around in with my Mobility Scooter. The flow of the line puts them right in the middle of the room so you can't back up or go forward. They took away the second door that people used to exit And closed it over. Now you have to come in and out the same door and it's not wide enough for people and a scooter. So it was very difficult very cumbersome and people had to move out of line in order for me to get out. They need to think about that layout a little more and use it in actual practice not just look at it. Other than that, it was great. read more

Seeing the Winterhawks is always such a lively, fun, wind-you-up, wholesome, bad food eating experience. It's truly great for the whole family! Be prepared to eat hot dogs, pulled pork, popcorn, nachos with very runny cheese, and to have a delicious beer or cider all while cheering for the home team. And do not miss the 50/50 raffle! The jackpot can get up there sometimes. Come for the hockey, stay for the people-watching, sing-along moments, and grumpy dudes yelling, "Down in front! No walking in while the puck is in play!" I think this is the first time I've been back to the Memorial Coliseum since the Blazers played there full time. I was a bit shorter then and the seats fit me better. I had never been to a hockey game before the YS took me to the Inaugural Season of the Vegas Golden Knights and then I was hooked. While we still love the Golden Knights but we thought we would find something a bit closer to home. This fits the bill. I love that everyone there shows up in whatever jersey they love. You can see all the 31 (soon to be 32) teams represented. There seem to be more fights in this league than in the NHL but I'll attribute that to the overall age of the players. On this night the Wheat Kings goalie got injured but was able to skate off under his own power.(Hope he's OK). I enjoy that they are all playing their best in the hope of making the NHL someday. Really fun to watch. Remember this is where Cody Glass got his start. The food and drink are about what you expect (the candy was $5 and stale) but check out some different eats such as fresh Poke that the YS found. I'll be back (we got a partial season pass) they have some good deals check it out. read more

Honestly not impressed. We saw a fight within the first minute or two. Gloves off, going at it for a few minutes with no ref interference. Is this normal? I know fighting is part of hockey but it was strange to us. Unsportsmanlike. Another two or three fights in the first period. We looked reallll sloppy. The Everett Silvertips were a much better team. The skill level wasn't comparable. Concession prices were as expensive as a blazers game, for minor league hockey? After the first period, they showed a documentary about a Canadian hockey family whose dad attempted suicide. Really? Not family fun, entertaining content. Again, seemed strange to us. This is my second hockey game but it was hard to watch by the second period, when we were down 4-0 by that point so we left. Not much in the way of crowd interaction, and overall a boring experience as compared to the Cincinnati Cyclones game I previously went to. If Portland's team concentrated more on playing and less on fighting, might be a better experience. Probably won't pay $50 to see this again. Should also mention how completely unacceptable it is to appropriate First Nations culture for an all white sporting team. Come up with something else ASAP. read more

Winterhawks games are a blast! The fans are enthusiastic but not obnoxious, tickets are reasonably priced, and the action on the ice is terrific. They have a tradition (I think they just celebrated their 25th year in a row) of hosting a game on New Year's Eve - it's a wonderful way to enjoy a game, with an option to skate with the players afterwards). It's great to get to see minor league hockey players refining their skills and putting on a really fun show. One thing to keep in mind when buying tickets - if there is a basketball game happening the same night, the Hawks will play in the Colosseum, where the knee room can get pretty cramped. read more

What a difference a year makes. Most of my gripes have been put to rest, now that some of the games are held in the Rose Garden [1]. You get all the benefits of seeing a game in a nice arena, without the crowds and hassles that are part of seeing a Blazers game. I've seen games in both venues this season and do prefer the Rose Garden although it is cool to go to their traditional home. We parked in the Rose Garden garage for $8, which I believe is less than when the Blazers are in town. Seats are comfortable and since they block off the 300 level. There are no bad seats, but all seats are affordable. My tickets cost less this year at a better venue. If you are a AAA member, you can purchase tickets at the group rate, which includes a Winterhawks hat, and there are no additional ticketing fees. They also constantly have special promotions to sweeten the deal (meal packages, lift tickets, etc.). We were there for a popular game against arch rival, Seattle, and attendance was just over 10,000. My kids had an absolute blast this year and there was more profanity (from the fans) and bigger fights that the refs pretty much let run their course. The video crew was awesome, so we were dying laughing at the 'Kiss Cam' and the video replays of the action. So the game was a bit dirtier in a cleaner venue. We'll definitely be back more often. For a city that only has one professional sports team, I'd be hard pressed to believe most Portlanders would know the difference between WHL and NHL hockey action. The Winterhawks are in fact one of the most successful WHL teams of all time and they are the pride of Portland hockey. As a very passive hockey fan at best, I can say every Winterhawk game I've ever attended has been super fun. Whether it was at the old Memorial Coliseum (R.I.P) or at the Rose Garden, the games are high energy and competitive. On top of some quality hockey action, one gets to be a part of crowd chants, cheers, player fights, and even souvenir hockey pucks. I still have 3 of them that I've never seemed to get rid of. For you NHL buffs, many greats have passed through this team. Names like Jannik Henson, Cam Neely, Adam Deadmarsh, Richard Zednik (with an intact neck) and Mark Messier have graced the ice in a 'Hawks uniform. How fabulous is that? It's been years since I've had the pleasure to see live, but when in Portland, it's hard not to root them on. Go Hawks! read more

Hockey is freaking good. It *almost* makes up for Portland losing my favorite sport in the WORLD lacrosse (RIP Lumberjacks). So, Winterhawks it is. I have the Portland Winterhawks to thank for my fairly new-found love of ice hockey. I had never been passionate about any sports until getting the opportunity to attend my first Hawks game. Hockey is just so darn fast and exciting! Each time I have the pleasure of attending a game I always have a blast. This applies to both home venues this team plays at: Veterans Memorial Colosseum or the Moda Center. I hope to one day be lucky enough to be a season ticket holder. The Winterhawks are for me the best deal in local sports entertainment. Ok so in reality they are tied with RollerDerby, but that's still tied for the best. The players are young and hungry, the entrance doesn't bankrupt anyone with a family, and the mood is fun. I've tried basketball, but the price and the snootyness drive me away. Yes, we have Portland Trail Blazers (for basketball) and Portland Timbers (for soccer)..but we also have a hockey team with a cool name Portland Winterhawks and they are pretty darn awesome. We don't have ice hockey in Indonesia where I grew up, so I've never really watch live hockey game. Then I moved to Portland and not until this year, I went to my first hockey game. They played at the Rose Garden Arena and I was surprised on how empty the arena was compared to Blazers games. At the same time, it was nice that we didn't have to deal with crowds. Hockey is a pretty brutal sport. I don't know if I could be a hockey athlete and got pushed, smashed, and fall on the ice. I admire Portland Winterhawks and how they work hard on the ice rink. The Winterhawks are typically extra fun for the fights. When the referees allow it anyway. There's something about the junior league that just draw these intense, hard playing Hawks that you can't help but love. Whether it's the rundown coliseum or the Rose Garden itself, the team always show up. Which is more that I can say for some of our pro teams (I can diss them, I pay to see them play too!). They also have the Rosebuds (like the Blazer "dancers" but on ice), Kiss Cam, hilarious camera play...good times. Plus the fans are just so into it, always. It's fast paced, it's fun, it's on ice. Going to see the Winterhawks has become a favorite past time of mine. If someone would have told me when I first moved to Portland that I would become a huge hockey fan I would have called them a liar. The games are held in the Memorial Coliseum and sometimes in the Rose Garden. The games are very entertaining and action packed. For minor league hockey it's very major. I especially like when they score a goal and everyone begins to shout, "TNT". You can't help, but feel the love in this place. Most of the people there are very friendly and always welcome to catch you with what's going on on the ice. My only suggestion would be if you're a drinker is to have a few before you get there. Drinks range from $6-$8, but what sports arena doesn't. read more

It's too bad that Portland isn't a hockey town because watching a WinterHawks game is a fun way to spend an evening. Sure attendance is lousy, but the team is good and the skill level in the WHL (Western Hockey League) is impressively high. WinterHawks games are also a great place to take kids. My infant son is a huge fan of the Zamboni and of the antics of the team mascot Tom-A-Hawk. And unlike attending a professional sports game, we aren't bombarded throughout the game by super-loud music and incessant advertisements. For the ultimate experience I recommend taking in a game at the Memorial Coliseum. Unlike the sterile Rose Garden, the Memorial Coliseum exudes character. I subtracted a half star because the WinterHawks sneakily add a $4 Ticketmaster service charge on each ticket, even when you buy at the gate. I also took off half a star because beer prices are too high. I'm told that this is because the WinterHawks signed a lousy lease and don't have any control over concessions prices or revenues. I read that the team was recently purchased by a Calgary businessman who has "promised" to keep the team in Portland. I'm a bit skeptical of this vow, no matter how solemnly it was made. This team would undoubtedly draw a lot better if it relocated to Canada---where almost all of the players are from, where most of the opposing teams are located, and where people care about the Memorial Cup. Would a Canadian businessman buy a money-losing American team without the intent to move it North? We shall see. I sure hope the team stays here though because I enjoy going to the games. read more

I love hockey! Ive been to my fair share of Winterhawks games over the years. Last weekend we went to the Teddy bear toss with friends. Not only did we go as a group and got the group rate but we supported a good cause. Also, since we got group tickets we got a complimentary hawk eyes hat! We always get good service and fun times at the winterhawks game! We generally park in the garage for the game which is $8. It is just easier than paking across the street for $5. We try to park as close to the bottom because that way there are less levels to have to go up or down to exit. read more

It's a good night out, whether you enjoy hockey or not---especially with the aid of Groupon. I've never gone to a sports game before because, well, I'm not really a sports fan. Still, I've wanted to go to a Winterhawks game for awhile---partially because I think it's really cool we have a hockey team and partially because it looked really fun in the movie "Imagine Me & You." So, when I saw the Groupon I decided it was time. The game started at 5 and ended at 8, so it's about three hours of entertainment. That's a good length, especially when it becomes clear which team is going to win... and it's not the home team. The cameos of the crowd during the break displayed across the screen were sometimes more amusing than the actual game----the game was great too, with sticks breaking and people sliding face-first across the ice, it really is fun to watch--- but they showed people in the stands dancing... people were really letting go of any inhibitions and letting loose. Then, there was the Kiss Kam, all straight couples, but adorable---and sometimes funny----nevertheless. They ended on a couple that must've been in their 90's. The only bad part was we were by the most annoying people. Somehow the ticketing worked so this family was beside, in front and behind us. And this family----both the adults and the children---- felt the need to stand and yell at one another during several durations. I think they were all very fascinated with the sound of their vocal chords because after they ran out of drivel they resorted to very loud, droning vowel sounds. During one of the breaks people could throw foam pucks into the arena for a prize and a little boy tapped me on the shoulder, politely explaining that he accidentally dropped his puck below my seat and would I please get it for him. I complied and handed him his foam puck. Then, the drunk woman in front of me says, "I think there's a puck beneath your seat" and begins groping between my legs. While she's reaching toward my nether regions, the little boy drops the puck on my shoulder. So, as you might imagine, it wasn't the most comfortable experience. But thank you Winterhawks and Rose Garden for making it tolerable. read more

Seeing The Hawks in action LIVE up close and personal was a super experience for our family. Tickets were last minute and super inexpensive. There were quite a few empty seats and the local crowd was a bit hush hush the evening we attended. Still it made for decent ET. We're accustomed to hockey in the last Frontier. While Portland Winter Hawks games are fun and I do realise that the Winter Hawks are my second favourite hockey team in the whole wide world (After my beloved Montreal Canadiens and before, well, the Boston University Terriers), the games can sort of be depressing at times. If you go during a weekend, holiday or when they're playing Seattle or running a special promotion (Dash for Cash, Teddy Bear Toss, etc), the atmosphere is great with tons of people there having fun, drinking beers and hoping for two seventeen year olds to get in a fight. If one goes on a weekday night, it can be sort of depressing. The Winter Hawks themselves have been atrocious for two seasons now with little to no sign of improvement. The routinely lose games by five or more goals and have the worst excuse for a power play that I have ever seen in my hockey watching life. If these kids were multimillionaires like their neighbours over at the Rose Garden, I'd boo them nightly, but instead they're just Canadian boys from small towns and you end up feeling really bad for them. As for the experience, Memorial Coliseum is adequate but it'd be great to see them in a more modern setting. The concessions are okay with your usual ballpark fare and some more unique offerings (taco salad, pulled pork sandwiches, etc) which really aren't all that unique. I enjoy the 50/50 raffle, which gives a person a chance to win fifty percent of the amount of money put towards that night's raffle and the general sense of caring for this team that many of the hardcore fans have. In the end, if you're not a serious hockey fan and don't really care if the Hawks win or lose, you'll have a pretty good time with a couple of friends. If you do care about the team, your visit can be pretty depressing. read more

If you want a fun sporting experience, that doesn't cost you an arm and a leg, this is the go to in Portland! I had never been to a hockey game until 2011. I am a big baseball fan, and as Spring Training was going on, I found myself wallowing in pitty at the fact that I could not go to any Portland Beavers baseball games anymore since they had moved (we got a 20 game pass every year). The Winterhawks were in the playoffs, so I said to my wife, "We've always talked about going to a hockey game, why don't we check it out." Well, one playoff game led to two, which led to three, which led to a half dozen, which led to us getting half-season tickets the following year, and every year since. The way they do their payment plans is what has allowed us to be able to maintain this (another plus). Watching the games is a blast, and the team does a great job with entertainment during intermissions. My only issue with the Winterhawks, is as an organization. The more and more popular the Winterhawks get (read: the better the team does in the post season), the less and less the organization do for their committed, die hard, fans; and the less and less they seem to care. I have actually had a couple of their staff actually tell me, "That's just the way it is. The team is good right now, and demand is high, so things won't be like they use to be." I really get the sense from them that they (the organization) believes they can do whatever they want right now because the team has been good. While that might work for them for now, it won't work when the team isn't doing well (and let's be honest, all teams hit slumps). Committed fans will remember how well they were taken care of when the team was doing well, and will continue to take care of the team when they are not doing as well. Don't take care of the committed fans when the team is doing well, they are less likely to stick around in the bad times. read more

Since the "new" owners came in there have been hundreds of complaints about their sales office, Just ask anyone @ the game who bought tickets through the Winterhawks sales group! My own personal experience was that I signed up to sell group ticket packages for Kids and parents @ our school. I was told in an email (which I saved) and phone call that for every 10 tickets I sell I get 2 FREE row "A" glass seats. I even made SURE to ask that If I sell 40 tickets i get 8 FREE front row seats and was told "YES". Well I sold 30+ Tickets and when I went to pay them and collect my free tickets they told me that it was only 2 FREE tickets for each order! They tried to rip me off for 4 seats! Only after I pitched a stink and threatened to sue did they release the tickets they promised. Like an idiot I called back for front row seats for the playoffs and was told you must buy SEASON TICKETS or purchase ALL 11 GAMES to get them, no exceptions. Yep, you guessed it I called Ticketmaster and bought single front row tickets, yet another attempted SCAM by their ticket sales office. I never thought I would say this but your better off dealing Directly with ticketmaster than these small time con artists! read more
