Under sunny skies and amid a festival-like atmosphere, the City of College Station on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011 officially opened and named its newest attraction: The G. Hysmith Skate Park. The park's namesake is Garrett Hysmith, an energetic College Station boy who, by the time he died in 2005 at age 13, had bravely fought brain cancer for four years. He loved music and Boy Scouts, but was most passionate about skateboarding. Two years after his death, his closest friends embarked on what they would dub Operation Garrett: Convincing the College Station City Council to include a skate park as part of a bond package that would go before voters. In 2008, 65 percent of those voters embraced the idea at the ballot box. Operation Garrett would, indeed, create a proper place for skateboarders -- a $920,000 facility -- to safely practice and perfect their sport.

Situated in downtown, the Beautiful Mountain Skate Plaza is open to the public and gives local skaters an opportunity to truly gather together and enjoy the area. The park offers a street like experience by having a variety of railings, stairs, and ramp like areas. Making skating safe for everyone around and giving younger kids, and their parents, an area where they know they will be safe as opposed to skating on the actual street. Now, helmets are not imposed but are HIGHLY recommended as the park is not under supervision so "skate at your own risk." As for the young adults, you have from dawn 'til 11 o'clock at night! Wow. That should definitely give everyone enough time to practice every trick in the book! Make sure to be polite and look out for others while skating as this place is hot, hot, hot! Literally. Look forward to seeing everyone practicing their kickflips!
