Some friends and I decided to see Memphis knowing pretty much nothing about it. I think they had the thoughts that it was going to be one of those musicals that uses popular music and works it into a song, but this one using Soul/R&B/Jazz music. Luckily, that is not the case.
Memphis based on true events around the Memphis underground clubs in the 1950's. It's about race relations and the types of music that were appropriate to be listened to. It's about a man who loved the music so much, he felt the need to bring it out of the underground and to the masses for everyone to enjoy. It's about people becoming able to deal with the differences in race, and it's about people not being able to do that and going to far.
It's a pretty fantastic musical to be honest. The music is really good. So good I'm buying the soundtrack. It's catchy, and several songs got me very emotional. There's a good amount of dancing (yay!) that occurs as well. I mean the whole second act basically takes place on a dance show. The set is simple, but done really cleverly. The transitions from one scene to the next work really well.
To be honest, the show feels like a less crazy and more intense version of Hairspray. A lot of the same ideas and topics are brought up, but in a less campy, John Waters-esque sort of way. I also kind of want to go back and bring my partner, because I loved it so much. The night we went one of the leads was played by an understudy, so if I do go back, I hope I get to see the other one. read more
