I love starting my home improvement shopping at Menards, because there's usually a larger selection and there are a ton of tools and items that the "bigger" chains don't have. This one in Carpentersville is nice to shop at, because it's a little hidden and harder to get to than the other ones, so (at least in my mind) it's never crowded in here. For this trip, I came in to get a light switch and I was pleased with the selection. I used the app ahead of time to find out the exact location of the product in the store. The only part I wish there was more of is that I like how at the other retail chain, there's always someone walking around to answer your questions if you have any. It's not that that's not available here, it's just that there seems to be less people on the floor. When I do find someone, however, they have always been polite and helpful. read more

There are few cars in the parking lot so it's easy for me to park my car.They have a clean and neat floor. Before I buy everything I need I want to pee first. I asked one of the staff where their comfort room is. She just pointed it out and did not assist me where it was. Because I'm not familiar with this place I asked the other staff again where the comfort room was and gladly he led me the way. I thanked him and he just smiled and left me. After that I grabbed one push cart and started to look for some things. They have a great selection where it's easy to find the products you want. There are some staff you will see and you can ask them when you need anything about the products you were looking at. After an hour I purchased everything I needed and I paid it on the counter. read more

This hardware store was big and has a huge space of parking lot. It parking lot are also clean. When I enter I can see that their flooring was also clean. They have nice and good section. It was organized well and easy to look for some tools or products they have because it has a label. The staff was busy on their job. Some of them are cleaning the floor and organizing the shelves. Some staff are assisting the customer if they need a help. I can say that every time I came here, I bought everything I need. So it was great place for me. Also there was no long line when I paid my order in the counter. Staff in the counter was friendly they will greet you and says thank you. So I highly recommend this store. I bought a display model water heater from Menards. They inspected it and told me everything was there and it great shape. It turns out that the ignition switch was not even on it. We found this out AFTER installing (I guess I was ignorant for trusting the store employees that things were good to go). At this time, we also noticed that the manufacturers sticker said 2012 on it! We only bought this (already out of warranty and outdated heater) 3 days ago! After explaining the situation, they didn't apologize or do anything to fix the situation. They wouldn't give me an ignition from another machine, wouldn't give me any comparable options (they best they could do was either a heater in a week or me paying $300+ more dollars for a water heater that wouldn't fit in my house). I explained that my wife and I are teachers and work in the day and we have young kids who will need baths and hot water. As they should never have been selling an outdated (like I bought this three days ago and the 9 year manufactures warranty was already expired by 3 years. When I spoke with the stores GM (Johnny at the Carpentersville store) he was condescending and rude. He told me that this was his store and kept talking over me and walking around like he was better than people. He treated a life-long customer like garbage. After I got my refund (which I had to pay a plumber to help me get the heater back to Menards) I told him I would never come back and neither would my friends and family and he didn't care at all. He just let a teacher pay for a water heater, bring it home and pay a plumber to install it, and (when the heater was found to be missing a part and also way too old to be sold) he never apologized or took responsibility. He had no concern for my family being without hot water and did not even offer a reasonable replacement after I brought the heater in at 9:30pm (after emptying it disconnecting it again).This is a horrible store manager, the worst customer service I have experienced, etc. I am also bringing back the $500 in fans I bought on the same day because I do not trust them and they don't respect their customers. During a Power outage we found a generator with the price of $900 Upon asking employees so we can take it, they scanned the barcode and told us the price was $1300. It all matched the tag with item number upc an everything BUT they wouldn't give us the price they mistakes for. The employee literally switched the tag in front of our face. Then the manager was rude about the whole situation. What's worse is I emailed corporate and NEVER got a email back. Its been 7 days. Nowhere to make a complaint to or follow up. I went to the mill work desk on Monday June15- They really dont want to help out the customer. I asked a question about siding and some additional specification for my order, he told me I should do the work myself because it would take him 5 weeks to get the materials in to the store. Another brick mortar store destined to close. I will look to the small family chains again. I am tired of the lousy service, lack of product knowledge and waste of my time. I really like this Menard's; however, I don't like walking thru the whole store to get some potting soil. I heard last fall that all the Menards were protecting themselves from shrinkage (shoplifting) by forcing all customers to walk thru the whole store to buy the gardening necessities. Menards has improved since we moved to the area. We tend to go there because it is closer than Home Depot and/or Lowe's - so they win by default. But they do tend to have the lowest price - not always, but often. When we first moved here, the store was very disorganized and I did not like it much - too hard to find things. Over the past year, they've renovated this particular store, putting in a big dedicated garden center, and moving/enlarging the lumber section. Additionally, they put in much better shelving with better signage - so slowly the store is becoming more organized and easier to find items in. I'm liking it more and more. For those of you who know the store - it's starting to remind me of the current day Canadian Tire stores found in Ontario - and that is a good thing. Only difference is: much smaller automotive section at Menards. :-) Would I recommend: Yeess....I would - not whole-heartedly yet, but it's a good store, and if you are price shopping, it's worth checking out. Would I return: Yes - I have to pass it to get to the other 2 big box stores, and their garden center prices are good, so I go there quite regularly in the summer. read more

The prices they display in the store are very deceptive. To get that price you need to fill in a form mail the form and hope you get the"IN STORE CREDIT" check. I would like to see the states attorney investigate this blatant false advertising. The signs don't say maybe in two months you can come back with the "IN STORE CREDIT" to spend more money just to pay the falsely displayed price again. Service here sucks. You can walk past 15 employees while wearing a sign around your neck that says "Help me please, I can't find what I'm looking for", and not a one of them would probably ask if they could help you. And if you do actually find someone that knows anything, they tell you an aisle and general location of the item,. They can't be bothered to actually take you to it, or even discuss the product apparently. gm Bob had horrible customer service. Came in with a Christmas tree I spent alot of money on last Christmas and half way through the season half the lights went out. He refused to help at all even though I had a receipt. All I wanted was an even exchange, not asking much in my opinion. instead I was told half way through the season last year I should have taken all of my decorations off my tree and brought it in then. place is a joke, better know what you're talking about before walking in! I've had a few issues with follow up on orders, parts for items I've purchased and have broke. I was recently told to go to a small engine repair shop for a belt on a mower I purchased at Menards, and then the moron informed me that belts were only designed to last a year, who'd have thougt? Then proceeded to hand me a 800 number to call so I can contact the manufacturer for a new belt. Stay away from the lighting department altogether, beware, never have what they have on sale. Bought an item there yesterday Sunday, that offered a mail in rebate. Big sign right above the item stating so. After check out and picking up rebate form, I noticed that the portion of the receipt that gets mailed in was not included with the receipt. Customer service could not help me, but got a manager. Manager said it won't be in system until Monday and I would have to come back. I questioned why they advertise the rebate above the product and then ask the customer to return for the receipt? His response was "Mistakes happen", "What do you want me to do?". WRONG! Don't scam the customer into buying something that you advertise as a rebate item, and then not provide the rebate until another time having the customer return to the store again. Manager should have credited me the $$ right then and there. It's a scam folks. They're scamming the customers! Shop somewhere else! read more

I don't know what's going here today. I had a question in the paint department and the initial lady was very kind but was not knowledgeable in the detailed question so when she went to ask the shorter female employee in charge of paints I hear her say, "can I ask you a question?" and the shorter female employee snap back, "is it important?!" .... wow... The nice one explains there's a customer with a question she didn't know the answer to and here comes the shorter 1 around the corner annoyed walking up asking if I'm the customer. She did try to help me but she was not friendly and I could not have inconvenienced her anymore which was very clear in her demeanor. I say screw that I'll go over to home depot or at least they're friendly. As I'm leaving a lady who is helping a male customer cuts me off well chatting with him I stop not to hear her with my cart in the aisle and got a dirty look from her I'm sorry you came out of nowhere into the main aisle and I inconvenienced you. The only super nice person was the cashier Rosemary and the initial lady who seaked help and was treated poorly by her peer. Shame on you that is not how a business is ran or sustained. read more

I took my 13 year old nephew into the Carpentersville store to buy lumber for a project he was doing as a gift. I'm useless in the area of wood, so we asked for help. "Rob" met with us and walked us through every aspect of this project, discussing how to build it, what to use and what to plan for. I've never been so impressed with a representative in any store. Ever. He was ridiculously knowledgeable, helpful and kind. Super professional. Made such an impression on my nephew. I went to the store to buy some lumber. I needed to rent their truck for the lumber. The gal at the service desk was VERY slow with the paperwork for the truck. When she finally was almost done, I asked if my check-out time for the truck could be the time leaving the lumber yard, as the yard workers are usually pretty busy and I might have to wait. She gave me a VERY hard time about "well you do have the truck tied up already". None of their other trucks were being rented at the time. I then went to the lumber desk to purchase my lumber. I purchased 20 boards and was assured they had at least 40 in stock. I went up front, paid for the lumber, got the truck and drove around to the lumber yard. Turned out they only had 6 boards that I wanted, 3 of which were split. With the help of the extremely helpful yard workers, we found something else that would work, loaded it into the truck and drove to where I needed to drop it off. I then drove back and went back to the service desk to return the truck. The same gal was even slower this time and continued to give me a hard time about how she did me a favor with the truck time out. I explained that I spent 1 hour in the lumber yard straightening out their error. I made it clear that I will NEVER step foot in that store again. I never go to this particular menard's because I do not live in this area. I was in the area and I needed a few things. Well the shopping experience was fine, hard to find an employee to help you. I watched as the cashier rang up my items and everything rang up fine, I checked out and went on my way. In the evening I was preparing my rebate and I looked over my receipt. Much to my surprise, cashier Renee decided to add a 1 year replacement plan at the end of the transaction that I never saw or agreed to. I believe this is fraud? So I will be contacting Menard's and I am sure I will have to be further inconvenienced and I will have to return to Menard's to get my money back. So if you decide to patronize this particular Menard's, beware and watch your receipt all the way to the end and then check it once it is printed so you do not receive extra charges you never agreed to. Long story short, They accused me of shoplifting , sent a cop to my house and said I am accused of stealing an electric tooth brush. YES A TOOTH BRUSH. I spend thousands a year for business and home. Looking for the hidden camera and then realizing it wasn't a joke, I became pretty irate, especially doing this in front of my wife, kids and grandchild. I called the store and the store Manager was extremely rude when I asked to see the video. He was trying to cross examine me over the phone or something. Asking me ,were you wearing jeans ?? UHH I think you cracked the case there Sherlock about 95% of the world does. What a Moran. He said there legal council or something would contact me. I emailed and called there corporate office for a month. Finally get a response (good luck). The next day another Genius calls me from there stop loss department to apologize and say it was a mix up with someone else. Then the idiot tries to tell me he tried to call me. Ever hear of voice mail DUUUU. What a frickin liar. The store Manager don't even call to apologize. You make a mistake and that's a big one, MAN UP and make it right. The building manager at this location has always been great! Any issue that we've had, it was addressed and taken care of promptly. We don't shop at any other Menards (let alone any other hardware store). Everyone has been extremely helpful and knowledgeable. And oddly enough, Menards has great milk prices! Who would have thought?! And you can't beat their 11% rebates.. I don't understand all of these complaints! The management is great! read more

Bought a Frigidare freezer 8/2017. Freezer works great but a little noisy. Delivered when promised, however I had to remove packing plastic, put on the handle and level. I asked the delivery man to level and he did a rush job, inadequate. Removing plastic wrap and leveling was not easy for an old man. read more

Bought some Dutch Boy paint and was sold Refresh in the plastic container with a lid that screws on. Although the salesman told us about all the benefits of this style lid, he failed to tell us tell us that it would be impossible to open again after use. Although we tried hard to remove as much paint as possible around the rim after our first use, it is not coming off. The top is so large that I can't get my hand around it. I would need a vice grip to hold the base of the paint to use both hands to try and open. When I called to let them know the problem, a different salesman said he tries to avoid that container and to try to loosen it by hitting it with a hammer. Both Dutch Boy Paints and Menards need to make their customers aware of this flaw in their product. read more
