This place is very odd, but worth a look. I don't exactly understand their business model. Where does their inventory come from? I was there on a Saturday morning. Lots of "stuff" to look at, everything from floor tiles in damaged boxes to a lovely cherry wood table with 4 chairs for $75 dollars. While I was looking around they had a special on large gray or teal Keurig K-Elite, a $200 dollar coffee maker, for $25 dollars "limit 2". Odd colors, but GREAT price point. There are still some good finds in the tile and hardware area, but the management needs to come back to earth with their pricing. This organization was created by Jimmy Carter to make housing accessible for people on a budget, but this location is doing no such thing with the majority of their items. My husband and I love looking at old things and thinking about how we could re-purpose them. We also have a dream of building our own home and finding ways to use reclaimed and cheaper material to build it. In our search to see what was available, we checked out Habitat For Humanity ReStore. Habitat for Humanity ReStores are nonprofit home improvement stores that sell donated building materials, appliances, furniture, and other things that people can use in their homes. Things are cheaper than regular hardware stores and the profits are used to support Habitat projects (building homes, etc.). Sounds great, right? We went and.... weren't really impressed. I still love the idea behind these stores but this particular store bummed us out. Dark, messy aisles, mismatched pieces, very used furniture, broken items, and limited options. I'm aware everything here is donated, but I kind of expected the selection to be better. There wasn't much we could use aside from a cool glass sink we found priced at $20. We didn't buy it because we didn't need it, but it wasn't enough to encourage us to come back. I'm sure a lot of people find stuff here, but not us. read more

What a great store! There's always a great selection of home improvement items like flooring, plumbing fixtures, appliances, electrical products, lamps, doors and windows, lawn & garden and tools. The store also has new and used furniture, kitchen gadgets and more. This place is HUGE, about 40,000 square feet. What is in stock today might not be there tomorrow. Everyone, Elgin Winter Market - In side of Restore Location/Layout - 5/10: The building is a former Lee Wards distribution warehouse on the North end of Elgin, which is located just south of Big Timber, and about a mile south of I90, on Route 31. The Elgin Market is held within the Restore space on the end of the complex. Parking is shared with a flea market, dance hall, and other businesses and can be tight depending on your arrival time. The market vendors are set up on fold out tables in the main aisle of the store, which allows for convenient shopping but limits the space available and the number of tables. Products/Variety - 4.5/10: The Elgin Winter Market is not, and should not be, what most would consider a true farmers market. Thus, why there is no "Farmers" in the name. First, since it is a winter market and obviously local growers are out of season, most of the vendors are not selling fresh produce and proteins. While there is one stand focused on produce and a limited selection of meats, the produce is not local. Second, some of the vendors are selling memorabilia and other home/hand made items, such as soaps. This is just for a heads up to manage expectations. Service - 7.5/10: Both the market vendors and the restore employees are very nice and helpful and will go out of there way to assist. Overall Experience - 5.5/10: The market is nice to have and we use it to get real cage free farm eggs and some grass fed meats during the winter months, which can be hard to find especially in our area this time of year. It is also nice that it is held on Saturday instead of a week day during working hours like Elgin's summer Farmers market. read more

I have to say, as stoked as I am about the IDEA of this store, it did not live up to my expectations. I had heard great things about this place, so I was so excited to go check it out. I drove all the way from Buffalo Grove out to frakking Elgin to explore, and when I go there, i was really disappointed. I totally thought there was going to be more. And not just more, but also more newer stuff. I still suggest stopping by if you're in the area, because i'm sure the stock rotates pretty quickly and you never know what you can find..... but if you live like 40 minutes away like me, don't take a special trip. So my parents bought a new house and remodeled it. They had a lot of perfectly good items like basically 1.5 entire kitchens, tons of light fixtures, bathroom items, nice wood trim, cabinets, furniture and more. Instead of throwing everything away or selling it on Craigslist I thought I would reach out to Habitat to donate it all. I absolutely hate it when I try to do a nice thing but people make it incredibly difficult. I contacted habitat and didn't hear back for days. They then told me I had to photograph every individual thing I wanted to donate (I could have filled a semi with the things I wanted to donate) and then e-mail it to them so they could consider picking it up. My family's house is located less than 10 minutes from the store which I explained. It didn't matter. As if we weren't busy enough remodeling two homes, we were told to take that much time and effort so that ReStore could decide whether or not our donation was worth it. No thanks. Great place to find all things "household" related. Think of this like a Goodwill, but for homeowners or those weekend warriors who want to fix-up their little home with some projects. They have so many unique items here from lamp fixtures, to plumbing to vintage oak doors and everything in between. I enjoy the variety of the items and the excellent prices on new things as well. Most of the items are donations which are in new or like-new condition. The store is well organized and lit. Make sure to sign up for their frequent rewards program to get some discounts and coupons. The staff is also very friendly and nice, especially when requesting to review items behind the counter such as some nice faucets or fixtures which are brand-new. Prices are very reasonable and you must look at everything before you buy it because there are limited returns. Shopping here is also good because you are not only getting a discount yourself, but you are helping the Habitat for Humanity to get resources to help others. Overall excellent place and one of my favorites to visit. There are the Fox Valley, Addison and Arlington Heights also available, but this one is my very favorite of all. read more

I go to this store several times a year, and I can say its has its pros and cons. Something's are certainly over priced but ok, for a good cause. The REAL disappointment is the Manger and her name is C---, or K___. Twice I have asked for a price and she routinely is being asked for this, nothing new as several items are put on the floor with no price! She looks at me as if I asked for the item for free, in a condensing manner she tells me that she will get the price. OK.. I walk around the store and wait, I can see her walking around talking and certainly not looking anything up, so I ask again after more than 1/2hr of waiting! she comes and tells me "Oh, that item is not for sale I don't know why it was brought out to the floor as its not part of the sale!" WHAT! ok, I ask for her name and she magically comes up with a price as I was leaving. This is the second time she acts this way, I have spoken to others who feel the same way. Its interesting to me because she seems to give prices to others with no problem, I don't like to pull the race card, but it sure feels like this now! I also watched as the employees at the register rounded up some crates for sale as a customer was looking at them. They quickly put it behind the counter and barely noticed the customer looking at them. If the employees are allowed to shop while working then it would be a good practice to look at the items before they are put on the floor, just saying! read more

I agree with Jennifer below which is my main purpose in writing this, to save a long trip. While it's a great thing that these folks do and the money goes towards great things, I drove out from the city and only got $7 worth of stuff. They had a wall mounted sink I was interested in but I could get the same sink brand new at Home Depot for the same price. I realize the money does better things at the ReStore, but I skipped it as I became worried about the weight of it. The store is kind of like a Unique Thrift for home fix it stuff, thus requiring a lot of digging and time. They do get some new things in it appears too. If you do go and you do see something you kind of like but aren't sure, just put it in your cart while you ponder. I thought about 2 light fixtures but had changed my mind; when I got to the register, someone was purchasing them. The pricing does vary -- some stuff is cheap while other stuff is pretty overpriced. It's a good sized store, you can get lots of appliances or doors or small lots of tile, but you really need to be prepared with a list and exact measurements. If I lived closer, I'd probably stop in every once in a bit but seeing as I live in the city, I probably won't make it back. read more

I went to Restore today looking for carpet squares. In the past they had reasonable prices. I found some small stacks of 18 x 18 carpet squares in the middle of the store, for $2 a piece. I brought it to the manager's attention, the price they have the squares listed for is more than Home Depot. I was told, maybe they are different quality. Yeah, the ones at Home Depot are better. I started looking around at some of the other prices in the store and noticed this was the trend throughout the store. I have seen some reviews on here and I just want to remind people that this is a non for profit store. I think the Volunteers do a great job! Yeah i understand I cant always get help but I just remind myself that it is just a glorified Goodwill. I do agree some of the products are overpriced. THE HABITAT FOR HUMANITY FOX VALLY RESTORE FACILITY!!! While I have passed the Restore location near the Fox Valley mall numerous times since it opened it's doors, it wasn't until recently that I stopped in. WOW!! I could kick myself for all that I have been missing by avoiding this store!! The materials made available to restore & repair your home in this facility are so affordable & in amazing condition. Plus the staff are so friendly & helpful, it only made my visit there all the more pleasant. What a wonderful facility!! I find myself telling friends & family what great deals I have found there & strongly encourage them to visit at their soonest opportunity!! I know I will continue my patronage to The Restore, for they are the reason I can now afford the beautiful changes being made in my home. read more

This place is hit or miss, but it's fun to browse no matter what! You can get really great deals on household products and lighting. I can't speak to the rest of the items they carry it, but it's worth it to browse their furniture alone. This is the best Restore I've ever been to. read more

This store is much larger than the Addison store and more of a selection. We went there today (Friday) and they had all their doors at 50% off. Also found 4 packs of light bulbs for $.50 and a 4 x 6 picture frame for $.50. It has a large and fairly clean bathroom too. read more

I'm simply writing this hoping that it helps them go back to the way they were. This used to be a great place to find quality and value. I'm talking about maybe 3 years ago. Nowadays, anything of quality is extremely overpriced and anything of value is pretty crappy or tacky. On Thursdays when they had their 50% off sales on great items, you walked out of there feeling good. On my last visit, about a month, I made the decision to make it my last. I realize they do what they do for a great cause. Most people in Elgin go there to save money because they don't have much of it. It feels good to help, but it's hard to not feel like a sucker when you buy something used for more money than if you were to buy it brand new from Menards or Home Depot. read more

You never know what you will find at ReStore but rarely do I walk out without buying something. Some things are true bargains while other items are reasonably priced and some are overpriced for the age/condition. Best bargains are light fixtures, cabinets, countertops, window blinds and some hardware. Paint selection is poor because the price is good - see something you like, buy it. I have had some fabulous bargains on wood moldings and trim tiles but basic field tile is usually not a deal at $1/sq ft. If you are looking for a very specific item, chances are you won't find it but if you are just looking for something interesting or useful, there's probably at least one item waiting to go home with you. read more

I have been shopping at Habit for Humanities for many years in many states. You see my family and I are property investors/owners in several states. We were firm believers in these Christian based stores, and what they are doing. This store is not like the rest. They are very rude, and unprofessional. They said my debit card was denied charges, that I needed another form of payment. I told them I just received a text from my bank saying that it went through. The cashier said nope, that happens sometimes our system is messed up. We always refund it when it happens. All you have to do is come back in a couple days, and show us. I said I live out of town but I can do that. I said ok here is a credit card try this. So I paid with that, and left. I went to the bank that has my debit card, and was told yes they did get paid from your debit card here is the conformation number. I also check my charge card through a different bank, and they were also paid from them for the same transaction. The bank with my debit card started a dispute case to get my money back for me. The next day I went back to store and ask manager to please put money back on my debit card because I was charged twice for same transaction. She refused to put it back on debit card. She insisted to refund my purchase on my credit card, and told me this will be the last time I shop there. I called the local office that manages this store, and reported what was going on, and how the manager of the office is handling this double charging thing they are doing. The office manager that supposed to be in charge of this Christian based store, told me I am not allowed to shop there as well. Basically she said the manager said I was rude to here, and they do not care I spend thousands of dollars at that store a year. They do not want my business. I asked them to pull the video, and see I was not rude, all I wanted was my money back on my debit card, she said no I will not. She said I know her, not you, and I believe her. I am the highest person you can talk to about this, now what are you going to do about it? I said I will be on Social Media with this. She said OK. Not a good experience with this store, and the office that supposedly manages it. I am very disappointed as much as I have spent in this store, and have given many many referrals to this store to investors to shop there in the past. This was my first and probably my last visit. My purpose was to find some trim to possibly match my kitchen cabinets and maybe find some tile for the back splash. Looking for the trim was a lost cause.Trim/wood of all kinds is just thrown in stalls so it would take hours to find what you want. Ceramic tile prices are a joke at this place. Your WAY better off going to Floor and Decor for tile. Prices for a non-profit are NUTS!!! I mean they had a dismantled kitchen for $10,000!!!! It was somewhat nice but who in the world is going to buy a $10k second hand set of kitchen cabinets from this type of place? I ended up buying floor vent registers for $1.00 each which I felt was a good deal. The one area I did think had decent prices were the window section. They used to have good prices... key words being "used to." I was interested in a lawn mower there and the manager said, it had no gas.... I pulled on the started cord, to feel the compression of the motor, and it started. The manager started yelling at me, why did I start the motor.... I said, you told me it had NO GAS...The manager continued yelling at me about starting the motor... and I kept saying... YOU SAID IT HAD NO GAS... Another time I was looking at a large piece of carpeting.... I asked that it be rolled out so that I could see if it was ok through out the roll. I was told no, because of safety reasons, then could not roll it out in the back....where there was plenty of room.... I was told that I would have to buy it first, then inspect it in the parking lot, where there was lots of dirt and some snow.... So I bought it and the guy on the forklift didnt have a good lift on the roll of carpeting and the carpeting started to fall off the forklift.... The forklift guy told me to sit on the end of the carpeting, WHILE HE DROVE ME AND THE CARPET, to a place in the parking lot... I guess they are only concerned with safety, if it means a little more work for them...... read more

You Can find some stuff here that will save you a ton of money, ESP if your trying to do a cheap temporary project like sticky tiles or something. They do have a good selection, but they do also have there OVERused stuff and OVERpriced stuff too. read more
