As soon as you walk in you're hit with the beauty of all the original woodwork in the home. It's absolutely stunning. We learned that all of the furniture is original to the house, which is such a rare and special touch when looking at a historical home. We take historical home tours all over the U.S. and it's very rare that all the furniture is original to the home. We will absolutely be back! First off it's like the house on the rock because once you enter it's a maze and no getting out until the end. This museum is basically the history of camping from the start of recreational camping from the beginning up to modern time with the most basic rigs to the class A motor home. I found it interesting to see how camping/rvs evolved over time from a coffin sized pull along to to a luxury home on wheels. The have various display's including engines and toys. Some displays you can walk in and some are just to look at. The building is massive looking but the museum is on the small side and an easy walk through.

The collection is broad and includes cars, trucks, commercial vehicles, prototypes, signs, model cars, gas pumps, and other automotive memorabilia. There is a lot to explore, and the variety makes it interesting even when the displays are not especially refined. The GM Futurliner is the biggest highlight and is worth seeing by itself. Its size and unusual design are impressive, but it is currently parked tightly between two structural beams. That makes it difficult to step back, take photographs, or fully appreciate the vehicle. It should be moved to a more open area where visitors can see it properly. This is a good museum for anyone who enjoys vehicles and automotive history. It is less polished than the Art Deco museum next door, but the wide-ranging collection gives it a very different character.

The Gene Stratton-Porter State Historic Site is located in Rome City, a Noble County city located on Sylvan Lake. This is one of two homes of Stratton-Porter to be named state historic sites (the other is Limberlost). Considered Stratton-Porter's "cabin," this home is located among 148 acres and surrounded by fields, woods, and formal gardens. Did you know that Stratton-Porter is Indiana's most widely read female author? She was also a nature photographer, naturist, and entrepreneur. Her novels include "The Song of the Cardinal" and "Michael O' Halloran." The Carriage House Visitor Center is a great place to stop when here. You can wander around the grounds, explore her library, and even watch rare video footage of this early 20th century writer. Admission is free to Indiana State Museum members and children under the age of 3. Otherwise, it's $6 for ages 3-17, $5 for Indiana college students (ID required), $8 for seniors (60+), and $9 for other adults. Access Pass members are also $5. Indoor tours are only available by reservation for groups of four or more by calling the site at 260.854.3790. Groups of 10 or more receive $1 off full-priced admission per person, based on age. Admission is FREE for pre-registered, accredited schools and homeschool groups of 10 or more K-12 students. It's important to note that the site is open April-November. Accessibility is a bit inconsistent, though given the age of the house that's to be expected. There's definitely a good effort made (as is true for most historic sites). I did feel like a few tweaks could have improved it a bit (thus the 4-star), however, I still had lots I could enjoy here and I found it incredibly relaxing. As a writer myself, there's something awesome about enjoying Indiana's writing history. You can also host events here! I'm a big fan of Indiana's state historic sites and I'm trying to make my way to all of them. This is a definite gem and should be considered for a stop if in the Noble County (think Kendallville) area.

I love how knowledgeable the staff was and how accommodating people were when we had a variety of ages of children. We always love coming to the zoo and I can rest easy that the staff is always very helpful and accommodating. My only criticism would be that we have some significant in anaphylactic allergens and the staff at Kitty Hawk Café didn't seem to be very knowledgeable about allergens and cross contamination, so we didn't feel safe at all getting any food there. I highly recommend bringing a cooler and leaving it in your car if you have allergies.

There are fewer barriers, so visitors can get much closer to the aircraft. The enormous size of the F-14 is especially impressive when compared with the F-18 or older A-4. One volunteer shared some negative comments about museum leadership and mentioned that another volunteer had sprayed cleaning chemicals inside the F-117A bomb bay door, which reportedly smeared some of the signatures preserved there. This felt more like an internal museum matter than part of the visitor experience. The sci-fi and Alien exhibits also seemed somewhat separate from the museum's core aviation focus. Overall, the aircraft collection is excellent. Seeing the F-117A was a major highlight, and being able to walk right up to the very rare SR-71B made the visit especially worthwhile.

Photographs, models, etc. It doesn't really cover the whole history of Bell Helicopters, just from his birth to his death. They do have a Huey, and two Bell 47s, one of which is restored as his personal helicopter, very plush and shiny. They are only open on Sundays, but the rest of the time you can call and make an appointment for a tour. I had seen the sign from the highway many times, I never had a chance to stop in, but this time I did, so I did. Things are nicely arranged. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. There's a short movie about his life, and then you can walk around and look at the displays. There's a small gift shop. The local history museum is attached, and the Bell museum used to be in that building. There's also a memorial marker to him around the corner. We'll worth checking out if you are into aviation history and are anywhere nearby.

I love that they have free lockers to store your coat and personal items. Really handy as we had our winter coats on. The museum has a few special exhibits as well as a permanent collection that includes a ton of information on the history of Kalamazoo, a mummy, and a planetarium. (The planetarium show is $3 per person.) We learned about the Kalamazoo State Hospital and explored the super cool traveling exhibit Skin: Living Armor, Evolving Identity. I learned a lot about animals' skin and their adaptations, how skin has informed technology, and how skin has affected people historically in terms of racism and prejudice. There are a few interactive elements to the exhibit but I think it would be best for middle school kids and up. The museum overall was well kept and for the most part had working installations. I saw some kids playing and the history of Kalamazoo was really interesting. It took us about two hours to explore the museum. It's not a place I need to go every time I'm in Kalamazoo, but I would say if you're a local and have never been, you should check it out. Or if you're visiting and looking for an indoor activity!

I was surprised to see so many cool new things like a small diner, a storyboard, sounds machines, wind tunnels. It was really cool! Some of the local favorites were still there. Including the mummy which we just had to check out. After looking at that we went and played a game of fact or opinion! We didn't even realize we'd played for hours and hours. Time really does fly when you're having fun!
