This review is long overdue. As we were planning a move that we decided we wanted some high quality…read morenew living room, kitchen, dining room and some other chairs for, it was an overwhelming task to do online and furniture stores are farer and fewer between. We knew we wanted an "upgrade" to our prior purchases, mostly from Ikea, Living Spaces, and the only furnitue places we found in our budget San Jose last time around (discount). We had an excellent hand-me-down couch from Room and Board however, so after reading a lot of online reviews we decided to give them a look in-person while in the city for a game. What was helpful was I had created an online account and placed the items we were interested in to different favorites or "rooms" already. Once we arrived and wandered around a bit, finding some of the items we sat down to discuss. Unbeknownst to us there was a sales associate/designer sitting near us. She offered to help us find what we were looking for. She proceeded to spend 2 hours with us helping us find the items, choose the fabrics, and suggest pillow accessories. Jo-Antoinette was SO HELPFUL. Honestly this was the best furniture shopping experience we have ever had. The store has huge amounts of all of their fabrics in yardage and she carried them to the floor pieces and tucked them in so we could see how the ones we liked looked in the fabrics we were thinking of. She sent us home with sample pieces that are still helpful to this day as we choose accessories and window treatments. And we didn't even make a purchase that day. She offered no pressure. We were buying a new home that was unfinished and not slated to be for 4-6 more months but it was further from SF so we wanted to do our recon while still in the Bay Area. She also helped to add our decisions to the "rooms" in my online account for easy ordering later. Once settled in to our new temporarily home for the last few months we were able to make our purchase and then set delivery once we had a move-in date. The magic didn't stop there. They delivered to our home, unboxed, set up, moved around, and removed all trash. Four months later we are still enjoying our new furniture - it has not disappointed. They only cautionary tale I have is that once you place an order of an item from your saved "rooms" it disappears. So if you are like me, make note first on your fabric samples which item was going to which room. I mixed up two sets of pieces and didn't realize it until after the delivery people had left so we had to switch some heavy arm chairs upstairs/downstairs. I had made a note from memory as soon as i saw they disappeared from my saved list but apparently had mixed two up. I highly recommend going to this Room & Board in person, and connecting with Jo-Antoinette.

Location is vast, with so many options outside of the usual Crate&Barrel (which we love to) finds. I loved the accent pieces, and will be going back to get them in the new year. The prices for items are great- especially if you know what you want and know quality. We were helped by Mark, who invited us to create a profile which makes it easier to self-select favorites and more conveniently build rooms. Stop by this location, it's near the Adobe offices in the city. They have a small private parking lot, and the location is right on the corner. Ask for Mark.

There are so many unique pieces, and the layout (upstairs, downstairs, nooks and crannies, all full of furniture and art) does make it feel like a treasure hunt. We ended up showing Jerome some photos of our new rental apartment, and he helped us choose between our two favorite dining room tables. There were a range of prices but definitely more options toward the higher end of our budget. Jerome set up a delivery (for an extra fee) for a couple days from our visit. The owners are nice during the buying process - if you're looking to use your own transportation they might not have the piece you want wrapped up and you end up taking one off the floor. The after sale process could be a little bit better and if they facilitated folks that use their own transportation they could have more returning customers in my opinion. All in all, worth checking out, you might find something you really like at a great price - just be prepared to take process into your own hands once you're all paid up.

I tried giving Roche Bobois a second chance when my dying dog unknowingly marked my $3000.00 coffee table. I brought it in to see if you knew of a place to repair it. I was shocked that a coffee table of that price, that looked so much like cement, was in fact PRESS WOOD!! (A $3000.00 cube of particle board) The salesman who had helped me, gave attitude and turned me away.- saying they wouldn't assist me with such an inquiry. It was the first, & last piece I will ever purchase from your organization. And yet you still send me your catalogue like it's 1982. In the end - know this: everything that glitters isn't gold. In fact, at Roche Bobois it's probably particle board. They don't give a crap about their sales team, as you clearly see it took them nearly a DECADE to respond. And not an apology in sight. AVOID this business and spend your money on QUALITY goods at a company who actually cares AFTER you tap your credit card!!

Can this new IKEA be *too* modern?…read more What I love about going to IKEA is going into the decorated rooms, shopping in the downstairs warehouse floor with all the small goodies, and eating Swedish meatballs at the restaurant. Somehow the SF IKEA had a different vibe than the other IKEAs I've been to (Emeryville and Palo Alto). First, there weren't the typical rooms to enter. The layout was really confusing. In fact, I had a hard time figuring out how to even ENTER! I took the elevator to the floor but it led me to the door that said "Exit" in giant lifesize letters. We looked around and could not find another door. After asking someone, they said we should just come in through the Exit because it all too confusing. I'll say! At the restaurant, the biggest difference is you don't interact with a human. AT. ALL! You order at a kiosk, wait at a table, and when your food is ready, they call you up at one of the two counters, and there's your food -- all without even talking to a human! So odd! It was very dehumanizing and felt cold. Like the cooks were right there talking to each other but they don't even acknowledge your existence, even if you're standing there across the counter. **TIPS** - The entrance to the underground parking is behind the IKEA. It's hard to find but it's there! - You can get your parking ticket stamped on B2. Just bring your receipt. You need to spend a minimum to get it validated ($15, I think??) - If you have a IKEA Family card, you get some freebies, like free coffee, so if you don't have one yet, sign up for one when you're there. It's free!
