Tex Mex at its best! Great service most of the time.

This place has really gone down the tubes, the last time I went there the service was awful. The server and his other coworkers were texting the entire time. I had to flag him down to get anything. The food is extremely overpriced and if you need anything extra then you have to pay for it. Look elsewhere for Mexican food, this place used to be great. read more

Don't go to this place !! I'm new in town and thought the place looked cool from the outside and thought I would check it out . I went there with my family and we all had a terrible experience! The server was depressed and unenthusiastic. Just from placing my drink order I wasn't impressed and wanted to leave but I figure I would hold out and try the food. I ordered the the tamales and found plastic in the one . None of us were impressed with our food or service . We don't like to complain a lot but we had to this time . So we talked to the manager and he was like oh we don't make the tamales in house so we have to talk to our distributor . You don't even make your food in house what the heck . This place is NOT authentic at all and taste terrible ! Go in at your own risk!! read more

We have recently relocated to Tyler, and have been wanting to eat here, but everytime we pass Mercado's the parking lot is FULL. Well, don't let that stop you. There is no wait, and the food is GREAT!! Our server, Katya (Kat) was absolutely wonderful. The food, the service, and the entire experience were beyond our expectations. The Manager, Michael, made it a point to stop at our table to welcome us to the restaurant. It will definitely be one of our "go to" restaurants. What an utter disappointment!! I used to live here years ago and the high point of our week was a weekend dinner at Mercado's. I drove a hundred miles out of my way on a recent trip so I could experience my favorite all-time Tex-Mex restaurant in Tyler. Don't get me wrong...this was still a good meal served well. But my memories of Mercado Mexico in Tyler from a decade ago were shattered. Nothing on the menu is "hot" any more. I asked the waiter which of the options were "hot" and he said "none of them really." The sauce served with the chips before the entree arrived was almost sweet. I am not making this up. Yes...a totally wimpy sauce with more sweet than hot. Put a can of tomato sauce in the blender and you can duplicate it. I would have been better off with my memories of how Mercado's used to be years ago. My recent visit to Jimmy Changa's in Houston was far better. read more

Being from Tyler originally I have come to appreciate good Mexican food after leaving and living in Louisiana, New York and now, Mississippi. And Mercado's is as good as good gets. Cheese enchiladas are probably the best thing on the menu. I also agree with Blair B. in putting butter in your salsa...is that a Tyler thing? I never realized it. read more

Ordered a Cesar salad but they didn't have Cesar dressing and then it came with hair. Ordered enchiladas and it felt like there was gravel in it. Red sauce on the enchilada tasted like dirt. Ordered side of chicken tortilla soup. 90% of it was huge chunk of chicken breast. The side of sautéed vegetables was a mix of uncooked veggies and completely burnt veggies. Cheese enchilada was seriously a block of cheese wrapped in a tortilla. Overpriced and some of the worst tex mex we have ever had. But 1 star for the salsa. Free tortillas. Free "ice cream". And service. I didn't have to pay for my salad that had hair in. read more

Um this place is absolutely disgusting. I even gave it the benefit of the doubt and gave it two chances when a friend wanted to try it. Their queso and guacamole were awful. The guacamole was brown and had 2 pounds of cilantro in it to distract from the fact that it was old and had probably been setting out for two days. Enchiladas were awful, as was the quesidilla, and the taco salad. If tex mex is what you're after I would recommend several other nearby restaurants over Mercado's. read more

Mercados was better in the past. The last four or five times I've been the food has become worse. It's expensive which was cool when the food was excellent, but with the subpar food they are taking advantage of people. My enchiladas last time were not good. I thought oh well at least we can get ice cream from their machine on the way out, it's always good... only to find out the ice cream machine was broken. read more

Smelled funny when we walked in. It has a neat atmosphere although the food was so-so. Maybe I've been spoiled with Houston's Mexican restaurants but this place just didn't do it for me. My chicken fajitas had a lot of the chewy fatty parts all through it and not much flavor. On the plus side the tortillas were very yummy. Oh and if you say this place is cheap you must be on crack. $38 for dinner with two people and no drinks..!? Pffft. read more

Bad service, decent food. I ordered the shrimp tacos, they were very fishy tasting, and hard to eat; the cilantro lime rice was good! Our server was not the greatest she let us run out of drinks and never brought the extra napkins that we asked for two times! It would be different if the place was busy! read more

I'm not sure why people give this place bad reviews. I love Mexican and Tex-mex, and this is as good as any. The drinks were good and the food was above average for sure. We had seven people so I won't cover each dish but the food overall was very good to outstanding. The salsa is a canned tomato variety but is really good. The flavor is nice and the chips are thin, crunchy and freshly cooked. We had a variety of different items and every person said their food was spot on. Everything was hot and flavorful. Of particular note was the Queso. Mercados goes above and beyond the average huge splat of cheese and plastic byproduct with a very good sauce that incorporates both red and green chilis. They add something for flavor that's subtle and delish. I had the charro beans which were excellent. Nice and smokey with just the right consistency. I also had a soft beef taco which was stinkin great. This is one of the best regular beef tacos I have had and I've had a lot them as you can tell by the extra notch I had to put in my belt. My wifes deep fried chicken stuffed pepper was superb. Try it, you will like it. Overall the food gets an A. Our server was friendly and did an ok job. She was a little slow with drinks and we were actually served our food before we had to ask for silverware. I don't think napkins were ever handed out which was kind of a downer when everything else was so good. It was a Sunday after church so it was pretty packed but we were seated right away. Maybe that's why it was a bit slow. Oh well, we will be back. BTW, the bill and tip was $120 which is a good value for what you get. read more

Have eaten here twice. First time I got cheese enchiladas... which came with some gross meat sauce on top of them, kinda like Alpo dog food. Cheese had no flavor and was very greasy. I couldn't pass up the carnival lights beaconing me in as I drove into Tyler after traveling all day....starving from terrible airport food. I really give it 3.5 stars. I really don't have anything to complain about, nor do I have anything to rave about.....other than the bartender/waitress was awesome. The Fajitas could have fed a family of 4 and were your basic fajitas - chicken and onions, nothing more. The cheese dip is good but not great - mainly because I am a white cheese dip fan and it was yellow. The margarita was pretty good too but I am a huge margarita critic as I make one of the best around. ;) Salsa was delicious.....but I haven't met many salsas I didn't like. All in all, I recommend. Real cheddar. Visited from out of town, and this satisfied our TexMex craving just great! Free, hot, fresh soft tortillas along with the chips and dip, free sopapillas and self-serve ice cream at the end, but the entrees were delicious, too. Not too many places have fried tacos. These were good, but not as good as I grew up having at Spanish Inn (see my other reviews). They were just beef filled, and could have benefitted from some garnishes, but enjoyable nonetheless. Good service and the wait at a busy Sunday lunch time was shorter than they said. We really enjoyed it. One nit, I don't like TVs in the dining room of nicer restaurants. read more

This establishment got 3 stars because the salsas was super sweet and the chili con queso tasted like fake processed cheese. The chips were light and crispy, probably my favorite yet. The beef and chicken fajitas were very tender and juicy. They are served with a Mexican butter that really explodes with flavor. The service was very good and they went out of their way to satisfy the customer. I would definitely eat here again I will just avoid the cheese dip and salsa. read more

I'm not gonna lie. The food can be kind of yummy. But it is brick in your stomach, heart attack food. Oh, you could order the salad...but if you like Tex Mex (nothing traditional here) it's occasionally worth it to indulge in one of their over-sauced, cheese stuffed, concoctions. I would recommend the Seafood Chile Relleno...if your cholesterol is under control. Margaritas are average...nothing fresh about them. read more
