For its 140 anniversary, it has been renewed with modern structure and artistic furniture. Look up, the huge lame hanging from the beautiful windows ceiling are like wooden giants stars. You can eat until 10pm in all the small corners offering seafood, meat, veggie dishes, taste beer and wine, buy Italian recipes books and even buy food to go, both fresh and canned. Spices, teas, legumes from all over the world and traditional food from Tuscany. I stopped at the seafood counter and shared the homemade pasta with fresh cherry tomatoes and mussels, a codfish millefoglie with roasted slices of potatoes and an amazing octopus cooked in the oven with zucchini carpaccio. I cannot say which one was better, they were all delicious! It is not cheap, but sharing 3 dishes got us to spend 18 euros each and we were full. Why not stop at the gelato corner next? read more

This place is amazing and one of the best non-touristy experiences in Florence! Everything you could imagine in one location. We did wine tasting and found a great Tuscan white and Chianti. We bought four bottles to take back to the US. I had the tomato sauce pasta. It took quite a while and the sauce wasn't the best in town. The noodles were cooked perfectly. My husband got a pizza and it was the best we've had! We also got gelato and it was fabulous, and my husband had a made to order cannoli. He got the pistachio flavor and loved it! My husband got a spinach risotto ball, it wasn't very good. Blan and not worth the calories. All and all, this is a five star experience. Enjoy downstairs and all the shops. OMG this place! I am a huge fan of food halls markets in foreign cities. I make it a point to seek them out whenever I travel globally. This market is no exception. They had an outstanding selection of meats, cheeses, pastas, pizza etc. it is located in the upper level of a warehouse building, and pretty easy for the taxis to find although we had walked over. The visit was for late October. Everything was freshly prepared, And all of the employees that we encountered were very friendly and helpful. It's hard not to order more than one entrée to be honest. One of our favorite items was the anti-pasta plate switch had meats and cheeses. We also had a pizza. There is one location that has roasted meats, and the chicken looked amazing. I wish we had another night in the city so we could enjoy another meal here. Reasonably price and accepted credit cards. There are also some gelato and dessert stands as well as a wine bar. This was the best serendipitous find in Florence! My friend and I were checking out some of the street vendors when I saw the sign for Mercato Centrale, a historic covered food market in the San Lorenzo district. We wandered in and were instantly blown away by the awesomeness of this market. Here, you can find bread, sandwiches, fruits and veggies, nuts, spices, (cured) meats, cheese, fried foods, chocolate, gelato, fresh pasta, pizza, wines, and typical Tuscan snacks such as lampredotto and budelline. There's also a cafe/bar, bookshop, and Eataly grocery where you can buy olives, pastas, wines, candies, and lots more. You can get lost for hours here, getting a sandwich for lunch, following up with gelato, tasting wines, and buying gourmet Italian foods. Mercato Centrale is close to Duomo, so it's centrally located. A lot of folks love Nerbone, a cafeteria-style eatery that specializes in a boiled beef sandwich and topped with salsa verde and salsa piccante. read more

Where in London you get fast food on shopping centres, here you get to sample some of Italy's favourite and popular dishes all in one place, on the top floor of Mercato San Lorenzo. It's a great place to pick up one or two dishes from each stall and head to a communal dining place in the centre to eat it all. There's a bar where you can order drinks too. Located in an indoor market its perfect for all weather conditions. The place is big and clean with free clean public toilets if anyone is concerned. The only problem here that there is a lot of choice so follow my photos for reference to know where I chose to eat as many stalls sell the same thing. FRITTOS Some of the best frittos I've had in Italy yet from one of the stalls. Suppu Con Ragu risotto ball was amazingly thin and crisp of the outside breaking into a lovely soft sticky inside of rice, Parmesan cheese and fragrant ragu. Fried pasta cube was better than any fried mac and cheese in London made with hollow thin tubes of pasta, fresh ham and creamy cheese sauce. It was wet and crispy, the perfect combination. Polpette du carne was made of beef and came still juicy and pink inside. It was lovely, sweet and seasoned well. Maklone was made of lovely soft boiled spinach and potatoes created a lovely juicy silky yet creamy texture against a thin crispy batter. BURGER Tigerella beef burger with spicy salami and spicy ketchup. I really enjoyed the bun being made from circular flat bread baked creating a crispy crust yet soft and doughy in the inside. As it was slightly chewy the natural sweetness comes through each bite. The patty was nice and juicy, high in quality and the salami pushed the flavours further adding spices and a nice smokey sweetness. Pretty cool and a new bun type to try. VEGETARIAN From the vegetarian stand we ordered a soup made of potatoes, peppers, chickpeas and oregano. Sadly it lacked depth and flavour and wasn't worth €6.00 I had to add some red chilli powder and pepper to give it a punch and variation in taste. PIZZA Freshly made pizza in front of you. The sourdough pizza base was amazing, smokey and doughy. It was thin enough in the middle to let the lovely pickled turnip greens take over in texture and to give it umami. The lovely fresh juicy sausage meat was very welcomed for that extra meaty flavour and the melted cheese was stretchy and plentiful to hold everything together. Delicious PASTA Oh my gosh! Pasta in truffle cream was a true bargain for €10. It was just beautiful. Simple spaghetti in a rich fragrant sauce of truffles. It was thick, each strand costed with more truffles than it can handle and there is me slurping it down. The sauce was so plentiful and delicious that I had to lick the remaining sauce of the plate clean. Prices aren't particular cheap or expensive and can vary stall to stall. At least you don't have to worry about service charge or choose where to eat as they have such a wide selection it can cater for everyone. The lighting is comfortable and relaxing although I do recommend to come before rush hour before all the tables go. It's seems to be a mix of locals and tourists. This place just doesn't beat the market in Barcelona (Mercato Boqueria). If you've been to Barcelona's market, you're really not missing out if you don't visit this place. The vendor stalls are specifically aimed at tourists (lots of the same merchandise, same scarves, fake leather purses, etc.). The first floor is for your local groceries (fruit, meat, etc.), the 2nd floor is very cosmopolitan and I was very disappointed by it. So had just wrapped up touring Duomo including catching the absolutely stunning views from the top of the dome. Had a bit of time to kill before hitting up the next museum and after quickly searching saw this market pop up on the map. I was first worried this was a tourist trap but figured I would give it a try anyway. Outside of the markets are a bunch of street vendors selling various artifacts from clothes to souvenirs. The market building is humongous and I was a bit skeptical when I first walked in but the moment I reached the 2nd floor it was a complete transformation. This place has literally a ton of eateries serving up a variety of pizza, pasta, meats, they offer cooking classes in the corner, and a ton of good wines stocked and ready to go... it is honestly a foodie heaven under one roof. It is a cafeteria style deal and you can literally walk around and pick and choose places where you want to eat some food. There is also dessert stations where they serve cannolis which are absolutely delicious as well. All of the food here is freshly prepared with a ton of options on pasta all cooked al dente, sandwiches and little bites, a spot that adds truffle to everything (Because who doesn't need a little truffle in their lives), and they serve up pizzas hot and fresh. The spot is a fun atmosphere and definitely worth a visit but with this said, I will say the prices are probably a bit higher for less food then you can find roaming the streets of Florence. This sure takes the prize for convenience and just fun atmosphere though so highly recommend hitting it up. read more

Out of all the cities I visited on my trip to Europe, Florence was definitely the BEST place to shop...and Mercato Centrale was one of my favorites! Mercato Centrale is the place to get all your goodies that you want to take home--dried pastas, sun dried tomatoes, wine, truffle oil, balsamic vinegar plus SOO much more. There are also fresh shops that sold fruits, made fresh pasta, breads, cheese, prosciutto.... ANDDD they also had a few restaurants that had good things cookin'! I wish we had more time to spend here, but our day was jam packed and we were in and out in an hour. The people there were SO friendly and not at all pushy to sell their products. Also, the staff here is not very friendly, they kinda look bothered to be serving tourists and the pizza & pasta was so mediocre. I honestly wish I got to enjoy more of its presence during my stay in Florence, just because I came here twice; once with friends only to look at restaurants (which looked yummy but for some reason I wasn't really "wow'd" because I didn't know much about authentic Italian cuisine) and another time for an Italian class field trip. The second time around here, I was more amazed with the presence of this market and what they offer. It's literally food heaven. All kinds of meats, cheese, pasta noodles, sweets, fruit, vegetables, fish, and wine are offered in this one central market; all for an affordable price! Some stands offer samples (one of them had samples of bread with a load of prosciutto on top; the PERFECT snack while walking around!) and some are willing to explain to you about their products. Most of the stands here offer high quality food that is straight from the source and taste wonderful! Because this is such a touristy area as well as where locals hang out, it is definitely a great place if you are a tourist to walk around and glance at what take part in Italian everyday eating. The second floor has a bunch of restaurants as well; it is like a shopping mall food court! I haven't tried anything upstairs yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if the quality is amazing as well. There is also a cooking studio at the top where you can watch people in their kitchen with a huge glass window (you can even try a cooking class there!) Amazing place to visit at least once if you are in the area! This is a foodie heaven. We almost tried everything on the top floor. We came here for lunch. The first thing I had to try was the lampredotto (tripe sandwich) which is a Florence favorite. The stand had no line which made me kinda sad, but happy that we didn't have to wait long. We first had to pay at the cash station and then bring our ticket back. The sandwich was way better than I expected. I've had tripe before and I'm not exactly in love with it, but this tripe was amazing. I think it was the outer layer of the stomach because it had some meat and fat on it. That's basically what it was meat and fat. The lampredotto man even dipped the bread in the stock which made it juicy. I got the classic parsley sauce with my sandwich as well which had a nice oil content. Don't be afraid of this tripe, it doesn't have much of a barnyard taste to it super clean. Best tripe I've ever had. My Dad even loved it and he hates tripe. Dad also went to the seafood stand for fried sardines, shrimp and calamari. Amazing crunchy, salty little snacks. The shrimp was my favorite. We also bought a mozzarella ball from a man pushing around a mozzarella cart. Salty and creamy cheese, simple. Lastly we got a margherita pizza which we had to wait for because the pizza stand was the longest. It was a good pizza, nice crust. The best things we had here though were probably the lampredotto and the fried seafood so if you come here those are a must. Also most of the downstairs market starts to close in the afternoon. We explored the first floor after lunch and half of the stands were starting to close. Love this market, wish we had more time to explore and eat. read more

Many of the guide books and even our Airbnb host suggested that this was a great place to get lunch or dinner. The upstairs area is open from midday to midnight everyday and the downstairs is a traditional market. Not what I expected when you hear the word market, this place is exceptionally clean and not smelly - the UK has a lot to learn from the Italians. We had dinner in the upstairs dining area a few times and tried the pasta, pizza, and antipasti platters whilst watching some of the Euro football matches. Prices are slightly more than the traditional restaurants but much more reasonable than some of the tourist trap restaurants located right outside the square. I'd recommend dining here to anyone visiting Florence, the staff are all friendly and there is a nice atmosphere, a must for any foodie. read more

A popular and fun market in Florence. Great combination of a coordinated group of restaurants upstairs and a vibrant A to Z market on the ground level. Upstairs, the "food court-" style restaurants are run by one vendor and so you don't have to worry about redundancy. There is everything from sushi to pasta to a coffee bar. We went for breakfast and, though a little pricy (4 euro for a quiche), it was delicious. On the ground level, there is a nice diversity of butchers, bakers, and other vendors. As usual the fruit vendors are outside. Was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. This is the larger and more popular of the two open-air markets in Florence. read more

Such a large, beautiful space, with tall, tall ceilings, and gorgeous decor. It sometimes looks like a huge, abandoned warehouse or market for food vendors, but that's the downstairs level. There's the cheese people, the wine counter, the large-pieces-of-seasoned-fire-roasted-meat people, pasta, of course, and all sorts of other foods. This is definitely an upscale sort of place; The finishes on the furniture are new and sleek, the signage is modern and well-done, etc. I went here multiple times while in Firenze and each time was awesome. Really fantastic place to eat, especially if it's late and you don't want to search around. We came twice. I wish I could remember the individual names, so I will do my best to describe the locations. First meal was burrata with tomato plate to start followed by a pizza. Both locations were one side, burrata near the end of one side (cheese and meat stand) and I believe was the only pizza spot on that side. Both were very good. Second meal was a porchetta sandwich at a little booth to the right of the bar (same side as the above locations). Burger was from the other side, only burger place - I think. Sandwich was outstanding! One of the best things we are in Italy. Burger was also very good. It had the "English" taste of burgers. I'm not sure if it's the processing difference between Europe and US meet, but to me, there is a noticeable taste difference. I like the taste, by the way. It tasted like good meat. Mercato Centrale is - as the name suggests - located in the center of this lovely city. This is a foodie paradise! It is a similar idea Chelsea Market, and similar places in the US. The food is all absolutely incredible. It is a great option for large groups because everyone can find something they like from one of the vendors then meet back for seating. Our favorite things here were the pizza and the cannoli stand as you exit. It's easy to miss the cannoli place, because it's just one guy behind a little stand personally making them for you, but MAKE SURE you visit this! It was the highlight of our visit here! Prices are mixed depending on the place within the market that you visit, but you can generally find some cheap eats here, especially for the high quality. This was the highlight of our first night in Florence, after having such bad dining experiences in Venice, we couldn't have been more relieved to find this spot! read more

Pretty cool location with lots of different options in one place. We had dinner one night and everything was really good. Plus, it was fun to try things from multiple stands. The second floor is where it's at. I don't have the words for an analogy right now, but it's basically a high end food court. For those of us from the USA where food court brings up memories of microwaved stale food from various big box chains, throw out that idea and embrace this kind of food court. There is a huge selection of gourmet lunches to be had here, and you can expect to spend 10-30 for lunch depending on whether you go for something simple like a panini or seafood. They serve things like artisan burgers with roasted eggplant and risotto with truffles. I personally had the seafood and was looking to recapture some good memories of seafood I've had in the past.
