My boyfriend and I came here to buy some trees for our anniversary. The staff was super kind and helpful, especially the woman. We didn't know much about tree breeds, and she helped us choose trees that were exactly what we wanted. She was honest about what would be a worthwhile purchase and what we might want to look for elsewhere. I would definitely recommend this local nursery over places like Lowes or Home Depot. They know their plants and variety with expert knowledge because it's their business. And they talk about their plants like they are pets, which I think is very sweet. read more

The selection at this nursery is superior to everything I've seen in Merced county. The strawberries I got last year are still going strong this year. They have many varieties of herbs, vegetables and citrus. I got 2 different types of eggplant, 3 different pepper plants, soybeans, and another type of been. I got Thai basil. They had so many different types of limes and citrus that it was hard to make up my mind. I only had one place ready for a new tree. The staff is friendly and welcoming. After owner stated I was with a "man" and demanded they stay open I refuse to go again. I was with a my mother "a woman" at 15 minutes before closing. Rude service, rude ownership. We told him flat out never mind when he was rude with us and went straight to Atwater. You lost sales and customers in general. 15 minutes before closing is another potential sale, and he never said the register was closed. I've been going to this nursery for at least 5 years and have never had a problem with my plants or staff! The plants never have bugs or infestations. I've been to this nursery a handful of times. Staff is unpleasant and unhelpful. The guy with the beard and sun hat is awkward and weird if you ask him a question, he is definitely not a people person. I have spent alot of money on plants when I moved to the area and I am sorry I did. I much prefer belmont Nursery and gazebo gardens in Fresno. I recommend this place for all of your plant needs! My boyfriend kept talking about how he wanted a cactus, so on one of our month-a-verseries, I drove here on the way home from class to check out their cacti selection. I parked among the roaming chickens, & walked inside looking for where they would be. A girl spotted me, helped me choose my little cactus succulent & even gave me a travel box for it. It was a fun experience & I can't believe it was my first time there in my 5 years of living in Merced. Hopefully I'll be back soon when I visit the town! read more

My family and I have been coming to this nursery for many years. As I've watched my children grow, I've also watched my garden grow with so many of beautiful plants I've purchased from our local nursery. The staff have always been more than helpful to me, helping me decide plants, giving gardening advise and helping to order special request plants. I am very pleased with the help and enthusiasm I got from Lisa on several visits to this quaint locally owned nursery. I am NOT good with horticulture and the grounds were a bit overwhelming because of the variety (not generic like the box stores) but she was so willing to help and walk me thru plants that would work for my project. My wife and I have been here a handful of times. Each time has been a really great experience. The main couple (I think) who work there are super friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. The lady especially is just a lovely person. I love her attitude and spirit. All of the plants and trees we've gotten have done well. I have never written a review but I frequently visit Yelp to read them when wanting to try something new. I had an experience that I wish to share for no other reason than to forewarn any future customers wishing to do business at this location. I recently purchased 5 bare root fruit trees for my backyard from Merced Gardens. The help and advice I received was great!!! Took them home and planted!!! I was so happy and excited about my new planting experience that I wished to do more. I already have raised garden beds so I was wanting to try some other gardening techniques and change things up with my limited space. Small problem...where I had planted 2 of the trees I wanted to replace with something else. Not knowing the return policy I gave the business a quick call to ask if it were possible to return 2 of the trees beings it had been less than a month since purchase. I had no problem if that wasn't how their policy worked but just thought I would ask. Nothing would have prepared me for the hostility, raised voice and ignited temper my simple question would bring!!! After several minutes of verbal assault I asked if it would be possible to speak with the manager only to be told "I am the OWNER!!! And I'm shocked that you would even ask if you could return them!!!" I simply told him I was completely fine with their policy and could easily do something else with the trees but that his conduct was so completely inappropriate and unprofessional to an existing costumer. Not wanting to bore anyone with the whole conversation lets just say that I will be taking my business elsewhere. I always love supporting our local businesses and try to do so as much as possible and I've recommended a lot of folks to shop there...not anymore. It's a shame they can be so friendly when they see cash in your hand but once it's theirs customer service is OVER!!!! On a pleasant note there is a middle aged blonde lady who works there (not sure of her name) who is an exceptional help and is extremely friendly, she would be a great asset to any nursery seeking a new employee. read more

I will take a minute to help other "two brown thumb" customer like me. I wanted to put my house up for sale after my last child left home, which meant facing fixing up the back yard. I checked several nurseries and the local building supply stores in the area only to find no help and felt like I was trying to buy a can of soup from the grocery. Two separate competitors referred me to Merced Garden and Nursery, saying in effect, "I would love to take your money, but you need Brad at Merced Garden and Nursery." I gave up and found Brad. I said; "Give me some low water plants that will live in spite of me, make them beautiful and cheap." Brad looked up my house on the internet to determine north/west exposure, fence line, house shading, existing tree locations, etc. He selected the plants with my input, designed the landscaping, gave me a detailed planting guide and a chart showing each plant placement. He came in $100.00 under budget and the plants were gorgeous! To my surprise, before I took delivery of the plants, Brad went on line and looked up the rules for a State of California program, fine tunes my project and provided the documentation that would allow me to file for reimburse of the total cost of my project! ("Save Our Water" Look it up!) He also referred me to a free irrigation design company and some low cost bulk mulch. Brad does have a flaw though. A previous review said Brad was rude to him. I think the customer missed the point, having talked to Brad over the phone, instead of in person. I think it was about plant abuse, having not planted Brad's "children" for a whole month! I will tell you why I think that: On my project, through no fault of Brad's, I was short one Sweet Heart Cherry Tree. I paid for the additional tree through Lisa, (Brad's blond assistant), and went back to collect it. Brad had hold of "my" cherry tree and would not let go of it until I listened to detailed planting, watering and three years of detailed pruning instructions. Tree in hand, I started toward my vehicle. Looking over my shoulder, I saw Brad following after me, carrying a very large bag of soil supplement. He said; "Here, this is free. You need it to plant the tree." It is clear, Brad is not just a business owner, he is on a mission. By the time you leave his nursery you will have an education, like it or not, and your brown thumbs will begin to turn green. I hope this review helps someone else. read more
