WING NIGHT = ABSOLUTE HOME RUN.My friends LOVE coming here specifically for wings, and they're right. Exceptional flavor, great deal, cooked right -- the kind of wings that make grown adults nod silently while chewing like they just heard the national anthem. You've clearly cracked the code there. Now... the rest feels like a restaurant that needs Ken back in the building doing what he does best: tightening Quality Control like a Marine inspecting bunks. The good stuff first:[[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance is cozy. The TVs with the Olympics everywhere? Fantastic touch. It felt festive, communal, almost European... if Europeans watched curling while eating fries.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Our waitress (who has served me a couple times before) is kind, attentive. Whoever is doing hiring and training deserves a raise...but today many of them seemed checked out. Now for the reality check -- delivered with affection: [[HIGHLIGHT]]The dining room seating is uncomfortable. The enclosed patio high-tops are noticeably better. The regular chairs feel like they were designed by a chiropractor trying to drum up future business.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The chili had good flavor but arrived just barely warm and missing onions, like it stopped just short of finishing school. The potatoes came missing bacon at first. When it did arrive, the portion was... let's call it "symbolic." About one crumpled strip -- not worth the price, even though the bacon itself was perfectly cooked and the aioli made the dish taste very good. Great ingredients, sloppy execution. Some plates are awkwardly shaped, which turns eating into a geometry problem. Our daughter -- a 23-year-old self-appointed restaurant expert -- liked the pancakes, (wanted the goetta burger but it was 86'd) and the sauce had developed that thick film that says, "I've been sitting here longer than a Senate filibuster." Again, good flavor... just tripped by execution. We also watched a neighboring table wait a long time to cash out -- long enough to turn a good experience into a frustrating exit. Stopped here for lunch after some nearby errands. My wife had a short rib grilled cheese with veggies and I had the 1792 burger with chips. My wife's comment on her food... "If you had a bite of my sandwich you'd regret your lunch choice" or something close to that. This is quite possibly the highest praise she can give. Alas, I did not get a taste. However, while I didn't get a bite, I do kinda regret my choice. My burger was super dry. I mean, extra thin hockey puck dry. But, to be fair, I missed the words "smash patty" on the menu. Spashburgers are notoriously dry almost by design. Overall it was a pleasant meal. Our server was excellent (I wish I could remember her name - blond, 20 something, working Thursday lunch). I was super disappointed when Urban Grill on Main went out of business. For many years it was a staple of spring and fall soccer seasons, with its convenient location near one of the area's largest soccer parks. Fortunately, the space has recently reopened as Mercer Social House and many of the same things we love about the former restaurant continue to be true with the new ownership. We have already been a couple of times and have sampled the brunch and regular lunch/dinner menus. An early favorite on the menu for me is the fried spicy chicken sandwich topped with sriracha aioli, cabbage slaw, and cherry pepper ($15.45). This is served with Saratoga chips or you can substitute fries for $1.25. The spicy on this sandwich is no joke and the cherry peppers really sealed the deal for me on this one, such a great flavor from those. The fries were alright, but next time I think I'll try the Saratoga chips. On the brunch menu, I selected the Monte Cristo with French toasted brioche, tasso ham, Swiss cheese, provolone, and dijonnaise all deep-fried and served with raspberry compote ($19.95). This was a large and very filling sandwich. I must admit one of the best Monte Cristo's I think I've had. The outside was crispy fried, but the inside was soft and had a really nice combination of flavors. What a sweet little gem in Newtown. I loved Urban Grill so I had high expectations for this place and boy did it exceed those expectations. First things first- make sure you make a RESERVATION! We saw people turned away because they didn't have resi's. They have NA beer which is a plus as Dry January has bled over into arid February. The wings appetizer with Mild buffalo were - soo smoky! The entree was double dipped and a large portion. We brought enough home in leftovers that our son could have a meal- But the true of the show were the "horseradish cheddar mashed potatoes" Service was timely- Ps- I loved the indoor decor- the lights were ultra chic!! Mercer Social House expertly and competently handled our large lunch party during a recent weekday going away party. Our server was quick to offer strong recommendations, which I appreciated. I was particularly gratified to see these new owners bringing life back to the former Urban Grill, which my family and visited frequently and enjoyed. Mercer Social House offers a really full selection of lunch specials at good price points. I opted for the half braised short rib grill cheese with French onion soup -- both super generous, delicious and just the thing for a cold day. It was hard to choose between all the tempting mix and match combos, which included a tomato bisque, salads and much more. I'll go back next time I am in the neighborhood. read more

I wanted to visit when it was Urban Grill but my Mr told me that his co workers thought it was overpriced and overrated. Now with new ownership, new name and menu, I wanted to check it out even more because it's always packed whenever we drive by. The pavilion (outdoor seating) is where it's at. It's super cozy, laid back, welcoming and rustic. We wanted to sit in that area on a Saturday night. The menu is VERY simple. Starters, Salads, pasta, ribs, wings, sandwiches, kids menu and dessert. I love the cocktail list. They have everything from margaritas, martinis, mojitos, bourbon, and mocktails. They also have wine and craft beer on tap. We ordered- Drinks: -Coors Light draft -Pom-A-Mule- Wheatley Vodka, Pom juice and ginger beer Appetizer and Dinner: -Burrata Caprese -Pesto grilled cheese sandwich w/ fries -Fried spicy chicken sandwich w/ side salad The appetizer was amazing. Loved the pesto, cherry tomatoes and Burrata on fresh focaccia bread. Our dinner was also on point. The pesto grilled cheese was comforting and had great flavor. Worst $100 I ever spent. My salmon was completely burnt and when I asked server to remake it, he said that it would take 30 min. I politely asked him to remove it from my bill which he didn't. Another restaurant ran by kids. Théy need a visible adult to manage this place. My husband and I arrived, got a table and waited, and waited and waited. There were six servers clumped together like gerbils at the bar talking to the bartender. The food was thé same as it always is: ok. Family dinner. Food was decent. Service was spotty. Ordered two single bourbons over the course of the evening - weller special reserve ($30 per bottle at liquor store). There was no menu so waiter had to read off the options - sans the price). When the bill came - they charged me $35 per drink. $70 for two drinks, for mid grade bourbon. My lady and I have been by this place when it was Urban Grill, but honestly, it didn't look all that good to me. Then, not too long ago, Urban Grill closed down, and in just a few months, it became Mercer Social House. After seeing the menu for this newly renamed place, it really looked interesting to my lady and I, so we decided to check it out. Overall, we're glad we did. We stopped by on a Saturday afternoon little after 5pm. The setup is pretty much the same as before, lots of seating inside and lots more outside under the pavilion. The menu isn't huge at all but offers a nice variety of upgraded pub grub. The drink menu is definitely nice, with a number of signature cocktails. My lady and I started off with burrata caprese, which our friendly and helpful server said was one of her favorite appetizers. For drinks, I had a classic Coors Light on draft while my lady had a Pom-a-mule (a pomegranate twist on a Moscow mule). Our appetizer came out pretty quickly and was very tasty. You spread the burrata mixture on toasted baguettes that they serve it with and the combination is great. As for our mains, my lady got the pesto grilled cheese with fries, and I got the fried spicy chicken sandwich with a side salad (house balsamic vinegrette dressing). Our dishes came out fairly quickly too. My lady really enjoyed the grilled cheese. I'll admit, the first couple bite of my chicken sandwich didn't seem spicy at all, but when I got a bite of the slaw on it, it lit me up a bit. I was impressed by the spice, much more than I was expecting, but not to the point where I couldn't taste anything else. Unfortunately, we didn't save room for dessert, but maybe next time because the brookie bliss does sound good, and so does the vanilla creme brulee. This spot has changed menu-wise from when it was Urban Grill, and I'd have to say it changed for the better, from a place that didn't seem all that interesting to a place I could definitely go to again. I use a wheelchair I easily maneuvered my electric wheelchair from the ramp to my table. I never needed to go to the restroom so I can't comment on that. Call ahead to make sure you get a table that is accessible some places are not. I am rating a 4 based on the overall experience and meal of our large group of people, 7 adults, 3 kids.. If I were basing it on my own, it would be 2 stars. No denying service was 5/5 for our waitress. She was so attentive. I didn't enjoy my meal, and others tried mine because I wanted to be sure I wasn't being harsh. Everyone else who had burgers enjoyed the burgers, and every burger from the menu was ordered by someone in the group. They liked the Mercer burger the most. We tried all the appetizers, and the favorites were in this order: 1. Burrata Caprese toasts, 2. Mozzarella cheese sticks (they were huge), and 3. Pretzels and beer cheese. ---Don't expect NORMAL German-style style pretzels; they are a combination between a pretzel & garlic bread, but very good. My dinner was the Artichoke Chicken flat bread with fig jam. It wasn't on a flatbread. It was on a completely burned tortilla. I don't know how anyone could send something out to a table that at some point was on burning on fire. I couldn't find a spot that wasn't black from burning. Top, bottom or edges! When ordering, I imagined an authentic flatbread with a fig spread, bringing the artichoke & chicken together to provide a juicy flavor combination of sweet, savory & tangy. Again, the waitress was incredible, and as soon as she saw it, she knew it wasn't edible and asked if I wanted something different. I didn't want to wait, so I just asked for a decaf coffee, and she brought out creme brulee. I love creme brulee! Unfortunately, this was not good creme brulee. The chef had trouble tempering the egg because it wasn't a smooth custard; it was more frothy, with almost a chunky scrambled egg texture in parts. I was so disappointed. Ok, believe it or not, we are going back, and I plan to order something I think I will like better. I loved the Buratta Capresse appetizer, and I am interested in the French Onion Soup as well as some of the entrées. read more

The cook came out to look at it and apologized and told us they would prepare a new meal. The second serving was EXACTLY the same. The chicken was undercooked and looked pink inside again (it's funny, in both cases, because of the fried batter on the outside, it looked terrific until you got to the actual chicken. They looked at the food again and didn't know what to say. They were embarrassed and kind to us and deducted the cost of my wife's meal. I thought my sandwich was very good. Visited this restaurant for the first time at about 1pm on a Saturday. Waited about 10 minutes acknowledged, and then to be sat at a table, as a party of three, as there was only one host who was also busing tables, and then later we saw her even taking drink orders when a server failed to appear at a table. Seriously thought about leaving at this point and probably should have. Our server was lovely and was truly the only good part of our experience here. She was kind and as attentive as she could be. The menu offered during our visit was the brunch menu, which had way more breakfast options than lunch options. The most popular plates we saw coming out of the kitchen were the wings and burger. For not a very large menu, it was disappointing to see so many breakfast options without a similar number of lunch offerings. All three in my party ordered burgers. When the plates came out, we realized we didn't have cutlery or napkins, so we asked the runner who brought out our food for these (not our server), she said she would bring some. A few minutes later, when none had arrived to our table, one of us walked up to the un-attended host stand, to find no cutlery or napkins there either. So, that person then walked to the bar where there were 2-3 servers working on filling drink cups to ask for cutlery and napkins, which was met with "we don't have any" from one server, while another said "yes, let me grab you some!" To which the original server again responded "we don't have any" with increased attitude. It was neither a kind or helpful response. I then took it upon myself to go around to tables without parties sat, and take the rolled cutlery/napkins from there for our use. Once we finally had cutlery, one person in our party realized that their burger was too underdone for their liking. Sending it back and getting it cooked a little longer was easier than finding the silverware. However, the burger came back out without the Saratoga chips that were originally on the plate and mostly untouched by the person that ordered it. At that point, it wasn't worth the time or energy to try to get that remedied. Overall, I would really hesitate to come back here. The food prices are high for truly neutral tasting food and the menu options are limiting. The service also needs serious improvement. Perhaps an increased number of staff for all areas (host, people to bus tables, servers, people doing side work like rolling silverware) would help. read more

When I asked her if we could have a server take our order, she rudely and tersely replied that it's not her table but she would take it. She brought out soft drinks that were completely flat. Holy salt!!! We just got home from the restaurant and the whole family can't stop drinking water since getting in. I am personally on my third liter and am still dry. Firstly, we're a family of six plus my father so a large crew. The server was very pleasant and helpful. She is the reason for not giving one star. I had five dry rub wings and a blackened grouper sandwich. My father had the same sandwich and my wife had the couscous salad with salmon. All three pieces of fish were woefully overcooked. My fish was so charred in places I had to pull out pieces so that I wasn't crunching through charcoal. The kids had a burger and two macs. The burger seemed fine but the mac and cheese was very oddly spiced, especially for the kids menu.
