The Hanover Crossing mall in Hanover has been in the midst of a major and much needed makeover for…read morethe last few years. The construction is nearing completion and has turned an old-fashioned mostly indoor mall of years past into a more modernized version of an outside shopping center with stores having their own buildings accessed from well manicured outdoor sidewalks with plenty of parking in the middle of it all. While not as charming as the Derby Street Shops which underwent a similar makeover about 15 years ago, but still nice and certainly much improved from the dated mess that was there previously. This latest L.L. Bean outpost has recently opened and I paid it a visit a few days ago. It is certainly big, bright and well-organized although of course not nearly as mammoth and wonderful as the original satellite store in Freeport Maine. But I am pleased to have this location so close by. As with everything everywhere prices have gone up on much of the tried and true L.L. Bean merchandise and products are no longer made in the USA. Most things it seems at L.L. Bean have been outsourced to China which continues to be a disappointment. I miss the days of the USA made products that could once be found here. But there are reasons still to shop at L.L. Bean. I am a decades long fan of their Ragg wool socks for example which I wear throughout the winter. They are very warm, comfortable and last a long time. I am also a big fan of their canvas tote bags and I cannot tell you how many of those I own. I keep at least 4 of them in my car at all times as they are the bags I bring with me to go to the supermarket and to the farmers market, etc. They are my beach and boat tote bags as well. They are sturdy, strong, can be machine washed and dried and they last for years. And they are fun to have monogrammed with initials or any word or phrase up to 10 characters. I also love the L.L. Bean H2O rain coat and H2O rain jacket I own which both have hoods and zip-out liners. These are so good at keeping me warm dry in the rain that I no longer use an umbrella (I hate umbrellas so this is a big win!). I am looking to get a new H2O rain jacket so when I am ready, I'm glad to be able to get it here. My husband just found very nice, warm pair of leather gloves here in a men's size XL. He is a big guy and has such trouble finding XL gloves with long enough fingers so this was good news. Nothing of course will meet the shopping experience and scope of the original Freeport Maine store but I am very happy to have this store nearby for easy access.

Okay, so while it's not where I'd generally find myself shoe-shopping on a Saturday morning, I took…read moremy mother to New England Comfort Shoes .to find a pair of comfy shoes for her . First of all, the customer service factor was through the roof. We were the only customers for about 15 minutes. During that time one of the owners (a genuinely charming husband-and wife team) measured her foot, suggested styles she might like and spoke knowledgeably about - what else? comfortable shoes! Once the line of customers started rolling in, he and his wife handled each person with care and courtesy. I was surprised at how many people are out looking for what `are - let's be frank - old lady shoes. I was also surprised at how many times I looked at a style and said, "I'd actually wear that one!" Propet, Asics, New Balance, Aetrex, Drew, Foamtreads - you name it, they have a comfortable shoe for men & women in every size from the narrowest to widest. Dressy, casual, running and walking shoes are all here. Granted, we're talking mostly shades of black, brown or cream but still if your feet are looking to be cushioned, cossetted or float along - go here! They will get down on the floor like shoe people used to do, measure for your exact sze, regardless of what you THINK it is, and find you a pair of shoes to fit perfectly. We spent 90 minutes while Mum tried on pair after pair, walked around the store and debated the merits of brown vs. brown vs cognac vs. brown. They were patient, pleasant and encouraged her to take her time!! Have you been to a retail environment lately where (1) a person wanted to help you, (2) was patient and understanding, (3) didn't leave you to work things out for yourself? The back wall was lined with all the orthotics you could want to make your shoe feel perfect. I fondled the pretty laces longer than I really should have and almost bought a pair of woven fabric oxfords that, in my defense you really have to see to appreciate. I'm not going to be here every week, but we walked out with exactly one pair of shoes that aren't ugly, are casual and sporty-looking, weren't overpriced and are most definitely comfortable. These are professional shoe peeps who know their styles and are willing to go the extra mile to make a customer for life. Go here and feel appreciated!

I had the pleasure of taking my elderly mother to shop at NE Comfort Shoes today. Tom (co-owner, I…read morebelieve) spent over an hour trying to find a footwear solution for my (anxious) mom's problematic feet. Tom was patient, knowledgeable, and gracious. He tried fitting my mother with multiple shoe brands and models until he found a promising solution. One would be hard pressed to find such exemplary customer service at any other retailer in MA, if not the country! I wholeheartedly recommend NE Comfort Shoes.
