Our family had a very frightening experience that showed us the true difference attentive medical care can make. My grandma first went to the ER at Kaiser Permanente, where her symptoms were dismissed as anxiety. Despite clear concerns and our requests to look deeper, no thorough evaluation was done and she was sent home. Only a few hours later her condition became critical and she had to be taken by ambulance to Mercy San Juan Medical Center. From the moment we arrived, the staff took her seriously. They listened carefully to every detail we shared and performed a full evaluation. The nurses and doctors were patient, understanding, and supportive -- answering all of our questions and making sure we understood everything. Most importantly, they properly diagnosed her with a heart block, something that had been completely missed earlier. She was then transferred to Mercy General Hospital where she received exceptional care. She underwent surgery and had a pacemaker placed. Throughout her stay the staff remained compassionate, communicative, and attentive to both her and our family. We truly believe Mercy's thoroughness and willingness to listen made a life-saving difference. I stayed overnight at Mercy General Hospital when I had a total knee replacement in March 2026. The poor nurses were overworked and did not have a nursing assistance. The only one they did have was covering as a sitter. Therefore, I never saw my nurse. My knee was completely numb and I was not able to get out bed. When I had to go to the bathroom I was placed on a pure wick. However, the nurse forgot to turn it on and when I urinated it went all over the bed. Most of the nurses acted like it was an inconvenience whenever I needed help or had a question about continuing my cardiac medication for my irregular heart rhythm. It was also impossible to get the equipment needed for home. The social worker wanted to send me home without a walker after a total knee replacement? I also had to wait for the referral for physical therapy and home health. Nothing was set up prior to my going home. I had to take care of it myself. This hospital has a lot to learn about patient care and the quality they provide. I worked in a hospital for 20 years in Southern California. This is by far the worst service and I am shocked. I had my first baby with Mercy General Hospital, labor and delivery nurses were amazing.

Emergency room experience: I have medical power of attorney for my 82 year old father who cannot hear, wants me to make health care decisions with him, and suffers from and a fear of doctors and small places. I was told they were taking him back for blood, then he would be returned to me and I could join him for the rest of the tests. Now I am advised they will not let me be with him as they don't know where he is. He has the right to have his advocate with him. Unacceptable. When released, he had been left unattended and alone so long, he wet his pants and was left to sit in it. He also did not understand his potential cancer mass that was found. All exactly as I told hospital employees as he cannot hear, but they were too busy to allow me to stay with him. This is not dignity care. This is borderline abuse of the elderly. Unfortunately I had to take my mom here for a pretty serious and scary health scare that already was traumatizing without poor service. When we initially arrived we had less than a five minute wait and immediately my mom was seen by multiple people checking her vitals, and other seemingly important tasks to confirm what urgent care told us to rush to the ER for. Stellar service to start and it immediately went downhill once we went to the room to wait to see what next steps were. First 20 minutes just WOW!!! 5 stars. While in the emergency room waiting to see if my mom needed to stay, Oj was the only person constantly checking on my mom. The monitor continued to go off and nobody arrived to even check why the monitor was going off. We Arrived at 10:30am and were Informed she would be admitted a little before noon and given a dielectric to pee and monitor her pee a little after 12 and nada. She was told not flush so I went hunting for someone and apparently the order weren't put in. Now here we are 2-3 bathroom trips and not one person checked her Transport was supposed to come at 2:36. For an entire hour and a half she wasn't even hooked up to monitoring since she had to continue to urinate since she was staying to be monitored when I informed several people I didn't know how to hook back up one of the pads that came off they just kept saying hang tight.so how are you monitoring her without being plugged in and no sense of urgency. All in all the level of care after she immediately arrived was pretty lackluster and I hope this was just a day off and not something that people have to endure on a regular basis at this place. read more

We came to the ER with a mental health crisis and waited more than 9 hours because a social worker had to sign off for her to go to a psych ward? For some psychotic reason I'm not aware of they have no social workers from 5-12AM and theirs didn't come see us until 1:10AM, it is now 1:45 in the morning and we got here at 3:30 yesterday, and are still waiting for the social worker to talk to the psychiatrist? Like why can't we talk to the psychiatrist ourselves? We had to beg to be updated on what was even going on or if they even knew we were here. I'm disgusted and worried my loved one is becoming worse instead of better. I can't iterate enough how horrible this lack of treatment and human dignity is. Dignity health my ass. read more

RESPIRATORY DEPT is HORRIBLE!!!! The Nurses and doctors were GREAT! Family member passed away in this hospital. A heavy blonde R.T. came in the room smelling of strong fragrance that had us choking. She pulled the patient's hair. Didn't say anything when the patient said ow. I told her "you hurt her" she responded with "I know". There were 2 other really bad experiences with 2 other RT staff. No excuse for this. They behave this way because it's who they are and management is not monitoring and addressing their behavior. read more

I was in Emergency at Mercy 01-12-26. the facility was packed, but I was treated very quickly and while I was there a total of 4 1/2 hours, most of the wait was for specific blood work. I was treated extremely well and checked on continually. Excellent Hospital! read more

The care was fine and efficient. Staff is proficient and friendly. The low score is the administration. I found out(by accident) that the hospital charges its own employees to park at the hospital. $12 a day 5 days a week. The reporting on line is that the hospital employs 2016 staff members. So they steal out of the mouths of their own staff is just under 6.3 million dollars a year. This is disgraceful given current economic conditions. This is a structure that was budgeted and has been paid for in full. This is sickening and there is no excuse. This6.3 million dollars is from its own employees it does not include what they make from their patients and visitors. read more

This was the 3rd or 4th time that one of my parents had to be there for a very serious reason over the last 7 years. They are both over 85. I still see food being served that is impossible to chew. Certain items that require peeling off something cannot be done when you weak and tubes are connected to your hands. Does any of the staff realize nothing has been eaten? The remote is still impossible for anyone who is not familiar with any technology to navigate. Even the staff acknowledged this fact. I fear for anyone who does not have a loved one to visit to know what is 'not' happening. Please give some training in hospitality 101. All the staff this time were very kind and as quick as they were able to be. It's truly not rocket science to treat your customers they way you would want to be. Took my son to the ER. After check in we got a text that took us to a website that said average wait times 1.5-2 hrs. We spent 5 hours in the ER. Watched everyone come and go. Kept asking what was taking so long and was assured we'd be seen shortly every time. During discharge the rn was shocked at how long we had been there and checked other wait times and sure enough, everyone but us was in and out in 1.5-2hrs. My mom had a multiple heart attacks and we took her here for care. It end up that Mercy General Hospital was top in the country for heart problems. She end up having multiple procedures done to her, including a open heart surgery. The staff, including all the wonderful doctors (Dr. Patel and his team) where wonderful, and took care of her like she was part of their family. They helped with discharge and where well informative during all the procedures. We are very thankful for all the hard work this Hospital does every day! read more

I am not a patient here but my brother is under their insurance. I had to bring him here for a minor surgery during the weekday and by 5 AM. Knocking off a star because the main entrance to the hospital was not going to open until 5 AM so this made me stressed out thinking he was going to be late checking in. And apparently valet is free but I didn't know and parked in their garage paying there for the hour. FYI. Aside from this hiccup to our early morning I am sending huge kudos to all of the staff we interacted with! For being so early in the morning everyone was extremely pleasant, cheerful, and helpful. Staff were very informative as what to expect after my brother's surgery. The doctor and nurse called to inform the surgery went well, when to arrive, and next steps after that. I have never experienced a hospital worse than this one. My mother (who is a medical doctor!) went in for neurosurgery and the doctors and nursing staff (with the exception of one nurse) were absolutely awful. They ignored my mom's pleas for help and seemed to relish in taunting her and making her suffer. I don't know if it was BECAUSE she's an MD and they didn't appreciate her explaining what she needed post op, but they didn't seem to care in the slightest and a few of the nurses seemed to actively try to make her feel stupid. I wish I was making this up, but it was such a traumatizing experience for her and she felt like they were trying to place her on a 5150 psychiatric hold (she's an actual psychiatrist as well!) because they simply didn't like her. Again, I wish I was making this up, but it's absolutely true. The fact they would do this to another medical professional makes me wonder how they treat their regular patients read more

17 hours ago New August 8th my grandfather was admitted into Mercy General Hospital in Sacramento. His cardiologist performed a miracle and placed 5 stents and replaced his aortic valve. His chances of survival were grim but without the procedures, he would not have survived. He decided he wanted to be here with his great grandchildren for a few more years and changed his DNR to a Full code. He fought hard and survived. He was on a ventilator for a week and extubated on Saturday August 16th. By Sunday he was sitting up at the bedside and we were planning his recovery and to bring him home. Due to his throat being sore and inability to swallow safely, they decided to put in a naso-duodenal feeding tube. The simplest bedside procedure was the downfall. Around 2:00pm Nurses inserted the tube through his nose and was to go past the stomach into his duodenum. Once placed, nursing staff are to do checks to make sure of proper placement. After nurses confirm at bedside, then a chest X-Ray is done to confirm proper placement. Radiologist gave the report that his feeding tube was placed correctly and they could administer his feedings and give medication. His nurse started his feedings and my grandfather slowly started to decline. By 9:30 he was in complete distress and had to be intubated. As the physician was inserting the breathing tube, they discovered that his feeding tube was not in his stomach but was in his lung. My grandfather received over 7 hrs of tube feed, medications, and fluid into his lung and went into septic shock. We were not notified until the next morning of his change of condition. It wasn't until 2:00pm Monday August 18th that a physician explained that his critical condition was due to a medical error. Over the course of the next 2 weeks, he once again was fighting like hell to stay here with us. But in the end, it took his life September 3rd at 2:53 pm. He is no longer here with us today due to the negligence of the hospital staff and the radiologist. A medical error that could have 100% of been prevented. Not once did the hospital reach out to apologize for the mistake. Not once they inform us they were handling the situation or inform us on how they were planning to prevent this from ever happening again. Shame on them! He was such an amazing man and deserved better. He fought so hard to try to stay with us but lost. Now we will fight for him!!! read more

Dr. Ahmed and the rest of the staff saved my husband's life last week! His artery was 95% blocked and they gave him a heart stent. God works through people and we are very grateful for the care we received here. I noticed other reviews mentioned problems with admin/paperwork etc but we had no such issues. On July 10th, I had spinal surgery. That date was also my birthday. I had never been to this hospital before but I will sing it praises. From the moment that I arrived to the moment that I was discharged, the quality of their staff never wavered. I believe in being on time, as this was a necessity in my line of work. The RN who expertly hit my vein on the first poke without bruising or pain impressed me. I had informed him that my veins tend to don sneakers and run or my veins close. He was patient and inserted my IV so quickly and without pain, I had to look to see if he was successful. He was! Maggie, my RN who prepped me with a smile and assured me that I would be fine, put me at ease. I will describe my experience as wonderful, yet professional. I was so impressed with the entire staff that Mercy General will be my hospital of choice for any procedure I may require. Everyone I encountered put me at ease. This hospital has to be one of the most efficient and supportive care we've ever experienced. My husband was sick and hurting to his stomach. After a few hours in the ER they admitted him to Oncology to cure his infection. They did a thorough and proper diagnosis. If it weren't for their test and advance well educated doctors here, we would've never known the root cause of my husband's underlying condition. During his 2 night stay- he was very well cared for and all of the staff and nurses were very attentive. We were never neglected and kept inform of every process and every step along the way to get my husband fully recovered. It was emotional rollercoaster for us and they even had a spiritual doctor that came into the room to help us pray and keep our faith alive. He was also seen by the Hospital Doctor and a Kidney Specialist who were extremely informative and kind. These doctors save multiple lives everyday. They explained what my husband had and asked if we had any questions. They take much care of their patients here. The food was a 5/5 Star. The pics speak for itself. Good quality food and well prepared, when people think of hospital food they think-ekkkkkk. Not here, I honestly sometimes felt we were at resort. That's how nice everything was at such of time of stress, they put us at ease. They also have free valet parking, which was so convenient. The parking attendees are prompt friendly and hardworking in the rain or shine. Every staff I passed by in the hospital helped me find my way when I got lost a few times. The hospital is very clean, they also have a beautiful Garden of hope you can relax your mind at and feel the Zen tranquility. The security team here is very tight. They have every entrance and exit monitored. You have to go through the main entrance for visitation. 2 visitors per patient. The only thing I really think they should consider, is amending the 14 and under visitation restriction. My kids were looking forward to see their father and was heartbroken when they couldn't. Thankfully Daddy got to come home. But as for the other reviews of not seeing a person they love at the end of their days no matter the age is very frustrating and you feel hopeless as your heart aches for the child. Beware I witnessed substandard post-operative nursing care, shutting off a recovering patient's oxygen level at Mercy General Hospital on J Street, Sacramento. My husband spent one night recovering from surgery, and put on oxygen to help his lungs go back to normal before discharging him. After the night attending nurse left his room, my husband started gasping for air. His monitor for oxygen levels went down to 82- 84, a critical level! I went to get the nurse and she told us 'oh I shut your husband's oxygen off '. What kind of nurse shuts off a post-op patient's oxygen and NOT warn him or his wife. Mercy Hospital let my husband suffer at the hands of this nurse. This nurse must know lack of oxygen causes damage to your organs and brain function. I had to visit the ER on Sunday night for stitches to my thumb. I was treated respectfully, checked in, and received care very quickly. The waiting room was not crowded but not empty either. I watched as people were processed rather fast and efficiently. After being placed in a room, I didn't have to wait long and the ER doctor, Dr. Monzon, was friendly and kind. Afterward, I was released very fast as well. This was my second visit to Mercy General ER in the past two years and compared to the other major hospital in Sacramento, it is by far preferred. read more

I went into Mercy with a wound from a dog bite that was infected, the ER got me in quickly I explained I had used multiple oral ATB without success the wound will semi heal and come back with a vengeance. Dr. Phan referred me to Dr. Hu for a debridement of an abscess that grew. The procedure went really well. I had an excellent nursing staff during my three days at Mercy Camilla was really welcoming, then Dyan during the day really took good care of me, also Zee on nights made the whole stay well. You guys have an excellent team thank you Dr. Hu and also thank you Dr. P for setting me up with the right ATB. Don't come here for ER unless you have no other option. My dad is in a wheelchair and had an episode with his leg becoming stiff/ immobile and in sharp pain. While he was triaged within 20 mins, once his xray results were complete, he has been waiting for four hours to see a doctor! He is 85 yrs old and has been waiting in the hall. This is not treatment with dignity. He needs a transport to get back to his residential care home so we are in ER limbo being ignored and forgotten while the hours tick away. Try not to call after hours to their operators. I had a horrible experience trying to reach my moms nurse through the operators. I called Wednesday, Sept 25 at 10:37pm because my mom had called me in a panic. She was scared and lost the remote to request assistance. I couldn't remember the number to her nurses station so I called the main line and kept repeating my moms room number. The operator supposedly couldn't hear me and finally did say she was hanging up because of foul language. So which was it? She couldn't hear me, or she was incompetent to do her job and decided to hang up? I called back and another operator transferred me to the nurse. Know the number to the floor, and you can skip calling the operators. Overall the nurses, physical and occupational therapists, CNAs, and doctors treating my mom were kind and great with my mom. But trying to reach the nurses through the operator was an experience I wouldn't want anyone to have. read more

Our insurance sent us to Mercy General ER. I can't imagine a worse standard of care. Patients aren't treated with respect, the waiting room was crowded with sick people, no proper triaging is done, no effort to protect patient information is made, staff doesn't even look at you or greet you or offer information about wait times or triage process. Upon walking in, you will feel dread and hopelessness and you will wait and wait and wait. We were never clear on triage or priority and ended up leaving without having being seen. read more

I underwent quadruple bypass surgery at Mercy General in August, and I cannot express enough gratitude for the extraordinary care I received. From ICU through the Progressive Care Unit, every nurse and attendant I encountered -- Kenny, Will, Sarah, Aryiana, Marjon, Vince, Darcy, Dave, and Beza (and apologies if I've missed anyone) -- treated me with genuine compassion, professionalism, and expertise. Recovering from a major surgery is overwhelming: fear of the unknown, discomfort, lack of sleep, and vulnerability. Yet, at no point did I feel alone or dismissed. Every question was answered with patience and knowledge, every request met with kindness and urgency. Even staff not directly assigned to me stopped to help without hesitation. I sincerely believe my smooth recovery and timely discharge were as much due to the quality of care as to my preparation. Buyer Beware! Mercy General's Stork Tour is a complete scam. Numerous promises and sales lines were used to manipulate us into choosing this hospital over various competitors in the area. Everybody involved kept mentioning how under-utilized this hospital was and now I understand why. As soon as we get admitted, we were immediately told numerous promises made to us were false. We were promised 3 people in the delivery room, this was False. We were shown a waiting room nearby to the delivery rooms for the family to wait, now we are told all the family has to wait downstairs in the general lobby. False. We were promised the hospital was going to help us get an electronic breast pump, so we removed this from our baby shower registry. FALSE. We were told we could park in the expectant/delivering parking spots, as this would help us with going back and forth to pickup family and take care of animals at home during our stay. Now we're told they are only to be used for an hour, and only by the delivering mother. Again, FALSE. I don't understand how a supposedly professional organization such as a hospital is comfortable lying about so many things. Many of these factors were crucial in our decision making process, when weighing a 100 year old hospital against many nearby brand new competitors. Absolutely destroys any confidence that I had in this facility. Our Stork Tour guide kept bragging about how she's worked with this hospital for so many years and says it's the best blah blah blah. Once admitted, the attending nurses repeated a lot of these same sales lines that the Stork Tour guide provided, sans the false promises. This leads one to understand there is a lot of coaching regarding how to represent the hospital. I cannot with a good conscience ask my significant other to check out of Mercy and re-admit at another hospital at this point, so we are stuck with this unfortunate decision we made. Hopefully other people will see this review and this will help avoid the headache of being scammed by a great sales machine that is Mercy General during one of the most important times of our lives. Edit: now minutes before going in for C-Section, the nurses inform us that our surgeon performing the C-Section, is retired. They can't even get us a real surgeon. Update: Dignity Health responded and told me to email them. Which I have and have not heard back. Also, Dr. MOY stated on the discharge summary that the echocardiogram demonstrates preserved EF with MR and high pulmonary. However, she did not include numbers that were very relevant. Also failed to provide the echocardiogram in my friends chart. There are two times the echocardigram is mentioned. 1) Where was it requested. 2) Dr. Moy's results. No where in the portal does it state that the echocardiogram was performed. Furthermore, shouldn't a cardiologist read the echcardiogram and give the results? This is really bad. read more

Oh my God‼I was there from 5:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. because I was having a pain in my hip. After taking a spill. I arrived by ambulance in tears. When I got there the care was all right. The se doctor examined me briefly and gave me pain medicine and sent me for a CAT scan of my hip. That was at 5:30 or 6:00 p.m. about an hour later a nurse came and told me there were no fractures and the doctor was going to come talk to me and check me out. Mind you they had wheeled me on a gurney down the hall at the end of the hall next to a room full of people coughing downwind from the bathroom and right across from the garbage can full of hospital waste. I bathed before I left with great painstaking care so I thought they thought out the stunk or something because they put me right downwind from that bathroom where I was about to throw up. And might I say their housekeeping staff should be fired. That place is filthy. Anyway the medicine she gave me did not work and it was strong so I laid there crying from 6:30pm to 1:00 a.m. in the morning. With no one coming to tell me what was going on. I have anxiety and I was telling them that I was having an anxiety attack from laying there. I got someone to unlock the bed so that I could go to the bathroom which was so nasty that it is probably spreading things, and I went outside and got some air. When I came back in about 1:30 a.m. and the doctor had never came I left. I thought that five or six hours was really too long to wait to be checked out of the hospital. Entirely too long. And might I say that the nurse that was on duty at first was wonderful but the one that came on that second shift. I could have strangled her she was very rude very abrupt to me. But I noticed that she gave kind care to all the other patients. I will never go to that emergency room again. I felt triggered, I felt ignored and I felt disrespected. read more

Recently had open heart surgery and could not have been in better hands. Dr. Kozina and Dr. Sharma did great with preparing me for surgery and performing the surgery. All the employees including nurses, PT, cafetera workers and cleaning crew, were amazing and very attentive. The private room I was in was spacious and comfortable, all meals were able to be customized daily and were delicious. read more

The outpatient care at ?Dignity ?Mercy has many flaws besides not knowing who they are and what they work for. The message system goes through many assistants so what the physician hears is like the game of telephone, interpreted and responded to by a non-licensed provider. My mom went in for a microvascular decompression surgery and the surgeon and nurses were nothing but gentle, kind and caring.
