Best food in Salem!! What a cool little place! And when I say little, I mean it seats about 40 people at tables, not counting the bar. It's small, perfectly warm and inviting, a little divey in its personality, and unique. They seated people as quickly as they could despite increasing demand, and people didn't seem to mind waiting. They have a chalkboard playfully decorated with daily events, live music, poetry readings, etc. Their lunch menu is exactly how it should be- small and unique. There was probably 6-7 appetizers and 7-8 main courses. My kids had the Mac and cheese, which they make a "child" version of. It was FANTASTIC. Clearly homemade, cheesy, gooey, fresh. My kids loved it! I was impressed at how good it was. My husband and I had their double patty burger, which came with some carmelized toppings I can't quite remember that was amazing, and garlic fries as well. The fries were very good, and the burger was perfectly cooked, dripping with an amazing sauce. It was a little messy, but well worth the effort! It's also huge- I couldn't eat all of it! Their drink specials seemed like a decent list and all very different drinks. I had the hard cider which was very good. My husband had a pineapple rum punch sort of drink which was huge, colorful, tasty, and had adequate pours (I was admiring the bartenders finesse behind the bar). Hands down, an amazing, hidden gem in Salem. Wonderful vibe and delicious food. My husband and I started with the clam chowder and devoured it within ten minutes. I can't comment on the food here because our party of 7 was turned away at the door with the host saying it would be a 2 hour wait and our party would be split up regardless. So on their busiest weekend of the year they couldn't handle a 7 top.......? If I walked in and said a party of 19 I would completely understand. But 7?! Come on. We even said we had no problem squeezing at a table. I pointed out a party of 8(ish) that was sitting and the host stated that was for "someone specific" (probably the owner)....ok. So looking back they CAN accommodate parties of 6+ but only if they know the person! The crowd outside also agreed it was absurd and pathetic - so we went elsewhere. Get it together. It was 9:30PM and we were visiting from Tampa, our group was comprised of Bartenders and former bartenders. This place came recommended , however, it was sad to walk in and be told "oh, we just did last call" as we turn around the bartender continued to make snide remarks and the crowed around the bar giggled in approval. As others muttered "Oh, not welcome". We are unsure as to why this was the appropriate response to us entering the bar. However, be warned, unprofessional and uncalled for. Our group would have come to their business as easy to serve and with high reward. Very unfortunate to see a business ran so un-inclusively. As a professional we all understand last call, but also know how to speak to patrons and convey our message in a more hospitable and courteous manor. Absolutely horrid behavior. read more

Nice, small place to eat with a lot of character. I loved the various artwork for sale all over the restaurant and the interior brick was nice. I would love to know the history because it had such an old feel to the interior that you know the building has some character. Went early and only had the lunch menu available. Great assortment of items. I went with the chicken salad because who can turn down cherries and almonds? Very tasty. My friend got the falafel and it was good too. Choice of garlic fries or a side salad. The fries were too garlicky for me so I went with the side salad. Kind of a boring side salad with just a cucumber mixed in with greens. I did like whatever was on it as a dressing. The chicken sandwich was huge and filling. They had some cool sounding cocktails but the one I wanted featuring "hysterical water" was out as was a beer that my friend wanted to try. Seats were not that comfortable. Parking (as everywhere in Salem) wasn't great but we found something a road up. It wasn't too busy when we went around 4pm. read more

OVERCHARGED MY DEBIT CARD!!! Went there for a couple of drinks with my girl friend. Had two rounds of one beer and a mixed drink and the bill was around $18, left a $4 tip. Stupid me I used my debit card so they charged $29 to my account. I wouldn't go back not only because the place wasn't anything to write home about and the way they jacked me on the bill. We happened upon this place and I wanted to write to tell anyone and everyone to come eat the pub fare at this authentic feeling tavern...I've gone twice in the span of two weeks and will come back again! Burgers are great, the grilled cheese with avocado and fried egg on top !! To die for. My only complaint -- the soda is always flat!! Give up the soda gun guys...go with bottles. This place was amazing. My bf and I went tonight and it couldn't have been better. Our waitress was very nice and super casual (I can't stand getting scripts from servers and love when they talk to to you like regular people) The menu was perfect sized, not huge but a good selection. Salads, a few apps, burgers, a few entrees. We had the skillet nachos and they were honestly the best nachos I've ever had. Crispy tortilla chips with a good amount of cheese, jalapeños and diced tomatoes with sour cream on top. They were simple but done so well. It was probably a little too big for the two of us to have split but they were delicious. The Tuesday specials are $6 burgers and $6 Mac and cheese. I had the burger, which was absolutely delicious. Two patties, American cheese and bbq with onion rings on the burger and garlic fries on the side. Bf got the fish and chips, again, delicious. I'm not even big on fish and I went back for another bite. They had a good selection of beers, and my mixed drink was served in a pint glass and was less than $10 (big difference from most of the restaurants in Salem where you get a 4-6 ounce drink for $12) All in all one of the best experiences I've had in a salem restaurant in a while. read more

I just had the best Cubano since I lived in Miami. This place is like the Pig but vastly upgraded. The food is amazing, they have a great beer selection, staff is friendly and the owner is a great guy. Since moving away from Salem I had not been here, but being home this weekend my friend who works there suggested I swing by. I went for brunch and it was great! The manager was our bar/server and he was personable. But what has really stood out to me was I noticed my card was double charged- with and without tip. I called for the manager and he got back to me and was very nice and went out of his way to call the POS machine company. Turns out it was a mistake on my banks end but he had been so kind and nice about the whole thing. After a long day of touring Salem, we needed a place to rest our feet and grab a bite to eat. We stumbled upon Mercy Tavern and were greeted by the kindest general manager! He welcomed us off the sidewalk and was the reason we stayed! He was very accommodating to all of our traveling needs - food, drinks, even letting us charge our phone! We arrived around 6pm and it was already pretty packed! But regardless of that, the general manager made every customer feel special and created wonderful conversation with us! I was so excited about this Burger that I forgot to take a picture. This place was GREAT we were in Salem for the day and I'm pregnant and I really wanted a burger, though anyone who's been Prego knows you have to have it well done . I've been super sick so the fact that I was craving something meant we had to get it! So I saw this menu on Yelp and the place looked great and was near other attractions we were looking to see. We were seated by our waitress which we believe her name was Michelle. She was the only waitress handling the whole place and the 5th star here is for her!!! The Mercy Burger with bacon jam actually sounded amazing to me but it came with Garlic FF and garlic sauce and this baby hates garlic, so she said she could keep the garlic out and I told her I had to have it well done. When it came it was well done but it was NOT a hockey puck. It was amazing still juicy even though cooked all the way through. The bun was amazing soft yet the burger stayed in it and the hand cut french fries were to die for. I ate almost the whole plate which is probably the first plate I've cleared in months. So thank you Mercy Tavern and thank you Michelle you had a packed house and still brought me more sprite when you noticed I was out you are a waitressing super hero! This place looked like the perfect place to stop and have lunch and take a break while exploring the great city of Salem. It's only the beginning of October and a weekday but still a lot of people roaming the streets. We immediately got seated and given some water. Out waitress Michelle was by herself and expertly commanded the dining room and bar. It wasn't super busy but quite a bit for one person but that did not effect our service at all! I got a Slow and Low which is an amaro based cocktail. Low abv so it's perfect for some day drinks. I got the cubano and my wife for the namesake burger. She is currently pregnant and can't seem to tolerate the aroma of garlic so we both requested our French fries plain and she had to order her burger well done. Well, that was the juiciest well done burger! She was quite satisfied. My Cubano was amazing, every bite was the perfect bite. The fries are hand cut and just perfect as are all hand cut fries. This filled us up and gave us the energy to continue roaming. We will definitely be returning here on future Salem trips. read more

I rarely give 5*s but wow! Spaghetti and meatballs - simple dish but incredible taste. Appetizer of a lentil spread with greens and almonds plus grilled bread was unique and delicious. Innovative cocktails and fabulous sangria. Service was attentive but not overly so, and place had a fresh vibe but with some historic touches. Prices were very fair (especially for Salem) even cheap given the quality of food. They also have several small plates which would go really well with cocktails or a beer. My family and I had the most delicious brunch here last Sunday. The Bloody Mary's were so good, just how I like them, not too spicy (though you could have a spicy one) with crispy bacon, olives and celery. All of our entrees were amazing, especially the Eggs Benedict which has a delicious sweet bacon sauce and crispy home fries. My sister had the hash and eggs which was served over a big pancake!!!
