While visiting Salem this weekend we decided to try Mercy and it was awesome. We arrived in Salem around 3:45 pm Saturday afternoon and walked to the restaurant. Upon arrival I could see a long line formed outside. I was starving and afraid that it would take forever to be seated but the line moved quickly. Once inside we ordered a few cocktails and apps before deciding on our main courses. We started with hot and sweet wings and truffle fries. The wings were cooked perfectly and the hot and sweet combo was spot on. And the truffle fries were just as tasty. Our main courses of house ribs, mercy burger and pumpkin ravioli arrived soon after. And we spared no time digging in. My house ribs were amazing. The meat was so tender and the bbq sauce was so tasty. My dining companions were impressed with their meals as well. Overall we had a great meal and great service. I would recommend this place if you're ever in Salem. read more

We innocently wandered into Salem on what turned out to be Hocus Pocus Day. Who knew? So I noted the lines for lunch stretching around the block, in the rain, at many eateries. I now understood the meaning of mercy as I arrived at this tavern, just before noon, snagged a spot on a fairly short line, and soon was comfortably seated at the bar - where the full menu is served. (I should add that MT is close by the House of the Seven Gables, which is also a huge plus.) Very nice selection of beers on tap. Attentive bartend. Comfy bar vibe. I will admit that the falafel is perhaps not the best I've ever had. But I give them an "A" for effort, even though the falafel is served on top of, not inside, the pita, and is a bit on the mushy side. New England approach to falafel presentation, I guess. Deputy Yelper loved the "delish" clam chowder. All things being equal, Mercy Tavern is a 5, and we'll be back. read more

We decided to head into town for a casual lunch and walk along the water. Mercy Tavern is just up the street from the Wharf, so easy decision. Very cool décor and vibes here. We sat at the bar and had a great lunch. Food: we opted to start with a salad. The grilled halloumi was tasty, the dressing a bit acidic but overall good. Great hummus, def tasted homemade. I had the fish tacos; they are generous in size and cooked perfectly. Hubs had the mercy burger, which he loved. But the real stand out was the garlic fries. These weren't just dusted with a bit of garlic salt; there were chunks of garlic so soft and velvety that can only be described as garlic butter!! So yummy! The fries were hand cut with the skin on, which I love, and seasoned just right. We cooled off on this unusually warm November day with some ice-cold cider. Service, Christine at the bar was great and friendly. The price was pretty good, too; we will be back for sure! read more

Came in for lunch on a random Wednesday while visiting Salem. Quickly seated and the order taken by Nick our server. Nick was the highlight of this encounter. We ordered club sodas to start. There was no carbonation in the drinks. We ordered the Baja Chicken Wrap ($17) to share, consisting of grilled chicken, bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado with a chipotle aioli. The burgers and sandwiches come with one side, we chose the hand cut fries. The wrap was fresh and well balanced, but the aioli was too garlic forward for our taste. The fries were cold and were sent back to the kitchen for fresh, hot ones. Nick took the flat club sodas off the bill and promptly brought fresh, hot fries, all with a pleasant, professional approach. He is an amazing server and we really appreciated him taking care of us. Note there is a $3 plate sharing fee that is imposed, which I find ridiculous. read more

The food is fantastic at Mercy and warm old school Salem vibe inside footsteps from the ocean in the coolest part of Salem. The in-between the craziness of the historic area and the Willows. Truly a great spot and a gem. The steak tips were as good as anything from the any posh place in town. The drinks are fabulous and you can tell the liquor is not cheap because I never get a hangover from there lol. Small and packed, but full of happy and enthusiastic people, the staff took care of me even though it was very busy. I had just finished a four hour walking tour in Boston, so it was the perfect meal to satisfy me! First time visitor to the Mercy Tavern. We really enjoyed it. Service was friendly, efficient and fast! The perfect end to walking around and viewing the murals on The Point ( as an aside...they were great!) We both got fish tacos. Two tacos each and they were filled with flavorful fish and were more than enough for us. The sesame vinaigrette on the salad was really good and the roasted garlic on the fries a surprise as we expected small pieces of chopped garlic or garlic salt instead. It's quite small inside, but we got a table right away and there's a TV at the bar for the sports fans. The pricing is comparable to an average tavern ($12-$14 cocktails/$8-$9 beers, most dishes are under $20). I got the Talk Dirty chai espresso cocktail which was amazing, we shared nachos (a must try), the tzatziki fries (very delicious), and I got the mercy burger (I actually asked for 1 patty which cuts the price down and it just as amazing). The food (burgers, fries, falafel) was pretty bland, and the clam chowder was just awful. I've never had chowder anything like it. This place must use a Greek yogurt base or something and if that's the case I suggest to just use a standard, more basic recipe. 6 of us got it and each of us was in awe of how bad it was. read more

So we visited Mercy Tavern yesterday for our first time and LOVED it. The dining room/bar is fairly small inside and it does have outdoor seating on the sidewalk extensions. We ordered the Tavern Burger with garlic fries, Reuben with Garlic fries and pumpkin ravioli. Everything was so very tasty. This burger is so tasty that I would select it as the burger standard for all other burgers to strive to become. Perfect consistency of meat, perfect amount of cheese, excellent bun and absolutely no need for additional condiments. Order this one as it is listed on the menu. The Reuben was very tasty with tender meet served on toast. The pumpkin ravioli was the best we have had with full delightful flavor. The garlic fries had a healthy seasoning of fresh garlic through the fries and were excellent. Service was friendly and attentive. The only negative is that they do not serve brewed unsweet iced tea.
