A small, beautifully cozy space with all the cheeses you could ever wish for awaits you when you emerge from the alley leading you to this unctuous temple of deliciousness. I happened to have my daughter's initial orthodontic assessment this morning and afterwards we went to grab a coffee a few blocks away. Luckily I had parked in front of the small sign beckoning visitors to explore the small pathway and into the grip of the intoxicating cheese gods waiting inside. Not only was I immediately swept away by the selection and space, but considering the quality of cheese and breadth of choices as well as other products, the prices still sit in the "reasonable" range for a store like this. Despite being here for years, I had never known of its existence and was greeted by John, the owner who told me they have been there since 2012. I wish I had known for all this time, as the storied Chestnut Hill Cheese Shop I had gone to in years past had closed in 2017, and honestly, this spot is nicer, cleaner, a bit smaller, and has a better selection! John took the time to make me feel very invited and explain his business to me and is very knowledgeable about his craft. Introducing a friend of my daughter to cheeses recently has been an exciting adventure and I picked up a small amount of comté to take back for him to try, as it's such a staple. I will be coming back here for many years and for as long as it is here. This is the exact kind of place I have been looking for, for years! I just wish I had known sooner! Make sure if you live anywhere in the Philadelphia area or collar counties to stop by Evergreen Cheese. You can make it the center of a trip for the day to Chestnut Hill, or just a single stop alone, but don't miss this absolute hidden gem.

Also, a big thanks to the owner for running the cheddar through that machine when I ask: means I don't have to wear out an arm making stovetop mac and cheese for family events.

I bought some beef lasagna (there are several variations) and ate slivers of this over several days. It was quite good but maybe needed a little more tomato sauce in the layers, not just on top. I bought their perfectly roasted vegetables but the only one available had a honey drizzle -- a delicious balance for the slight bitterness of the Brussels sprouts. Tasted great to me but for a party I don't want to give unexpected sugars to dieting guests. I For the party I can get just straight-up roasted veggies. We'll also get poached side of salmon which you can't sample so I bought their "healthful salmon" which was moist and devine! They have many creative salads -- I bought the arugula and shaved fennel with pine nuts. Very straight forward but would have liked far more shaved fennel. The lemon vinaigrette was the perfect pairing (provided in little container along with parmesan cheese). I added more lemon juice to the dressing at home which perked it up more. I tasted the carrot side dish; very good but too sweet with agave and raisins for this event. Will likely have their orzo as the side for the salmon. Our dessert will be their flourish chocolate cake but, sadly, they don't sell that by the slice so no pre-tasting. (It's for a monumental 95th birthday so I want everything perfect. Of course.) Just for me I also hot some of their beat salad marinated with slivered onion. Very good and good for you! (Not for the party because host has light colored carpets and people drop things.) Since it's game day, I'll have to add a tray of 1/4-sliced hoagies; Greek shishkabob appetizers, and maybe their Coney Island pigs in a blanket (in their freezer case). I didn't try those but know they'll be great. Oh, don't forget to ALWAYS get a slice ... or a whole pan... of their superlative tomato pie. I've never had a better one; not even in Italy. The chunky tomato topping is so good at any temperature. I put some of their roasted veggies on top along with a fried egg for a breakfast worth flying out of bed for. Can't wait for the party. I know my 30 guests with divergent health/dietary issues will each find plenty of delicious things to eat. I bought a container of their small chocolate chunk cookies. They were fantastic but, like most fresh cookies, are at their best when fresh. So I shared with neighboring family who loved them. (And now love me.)

The counter was pretty packed, but ordering via tablet was easy, and my sandwich came soon after. Unfortunately, they seem to have forgotten to pick up my friend's order so it took a bit longer. Checking in on your order every once in a while might be advantageous. They are stocked with every angle of Italian cuisine here-- wine, cheese, bread, meats, sides. I'm not eager to get that much into the Italian deep end, so I did not indulge, but supply is off the charts here! I had the Italian hoagie as a baseline and it was definitely above average. I'd definitely come here to get my fix, but I've had better in South Philly for sure. Things are kept pretty neat around here, and they have some outdoor covered seating available if you'd like to sit in to eat your food.

Recently, I paid a call at their newest outpost on Philly's Main Line. Located in the Strafford Shopping Center just a few steps from the Amish Farmers' Market, the Wayne store opened its doors in 2021. As a restaurant reviewer and food & wine writer, my chief focus, of course, was upon the charming little Alimentari Bar/Café. Here, smack dab in the middle of all that foodie hustle and bustle, you can experience a moment of respite and order a creative cocktail to accompany your luncheon or as an afternoon pick-me-up. A Negroni or Boulvardier (Bluecoat Gin/Redemption Bourbon, respectively, Campari, Iris Dorado Vermouth) or, perhaps, a Vesper (Bluecoat Gin, Stateside Vodka, Lillet Blanc), also known as the Vesper Martini. Erroneously thought to have been invented by author Ian Fleming for his iconic British secret agent, James Bond, the cocktail first appeared in Fleming's Casino Royale, which was published in 1953, and named for the fictional double agent and Bond love-interest Vesper Lynd. The restaurant also offers a nice selection of wines by the glass/bottle, as well as several interesting brews. The Italian comfort food headlines "Di Bruno Bros. products at every turn," with categories such as Formaggi & Salumi, Soup & Salads, Sandwiches, Pizza Alla Romana, Plates, Alimentari Focaccia, and Dolci. Cheese is obviously big here, so the Monger's Greatest Hits - featuring Fromage d'Affinois, Alex, Pantaleo, black lava cashews, fig & acacia jam, honeycomb, house-made focaccia, seasonal fruit, and crostini - would definitely be a way to go. My dining partner chose a slightly different route with her House of Grilled Cheese sandwich (pictured), which featured Reading Raclette, Taleggio, butter brioche and also a bowl of incredibly delicious San Marzano tomato soup. Another sandwich you might consider - highly recommended by a friend - is the Balsamic Chicken. Sequestered between two slices of toasted ciabatta, the moist marinated breast is aided and abetted by Caciocavallo cheese, roasted red peppers, arugula, basil, slathered with roasted garlic aioli, and accompanied by house-made potato chips. The Soup & Salad category included the aforementioned tomato soup and items such as Summer Panzanella, Di Bruno Bros. Caesar, and an interesting combo of Burrata & Brussels Sprouts set on a pillow of toasted rustic bread flooded with a Medjool date sauce. Interesting... and the sprouts were done to a turn, but the sauce was very, very (almost offputtingly) sweet. The Plates definitely hold some solid possibilities: House-Made Meatballs, for instance, or Roasted Branzino. But the two pasta dishes are particularly noteworthy... The Cacio E Pepe is basically spaghetti simply seasoned with cheese & pepper. In this case, the cheeses are pecorino Romano and parmigiano Reggiano. But the pepper is quite special. Tellicherry peppercorns are considered a highly prized variety of black pepper due to their complex flavors, which include woodsy and citrus notes. And for those who prefer their pasta with a tad more zip, the Spicy Sausage Rigatoni (pictured) - fennel sausage swimming in a savory tomato ragù, sprinkled with parmigiano Reggiano, and topped with rich & creamy Stracciarella cheese - is equally satisfying. Dolci, "sweets," are somewhat limited, but still worth considering... The Seasonal Gelato & Sorbetto are locally sourced from the Fiore Restaurant. For purists, the Affogato may be just the ticket. Traditionally known as Affogato al Caffè, this coffee-based dessert usually takes the form of a scoop of plain milk-flavored or vanilla gelato or ice cream "drowned" with a shot of hot espresso. The third option is the Chocolate Budino, an Italian pudding made from a milk & egg custard thickened with cornstarch. While similar to American puddings and custards, Budino has a richer, eggier texture, somewhat akin to Mexican flan... On the other hand, their pastry department (pictured) is just a few steps away. If nothing quite appeals, you can always make a quick stop and savor your dessert at home. By the way, Di Bruno Bros. also serves Saturday and Sunday brunch from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
